The thing about MGMT is that no two songs are similar, really. They play in a LOT of different genres of music, often on the same album. Some of it lands, some of it doesn't, but it's absolutely a band worth exploring sometime, as there aren't a lot of bands who have no fear to explore that way, as many pick a "sound" and stick with it in order to cement an "identity" in the market - and they don't. This has probably cost them the kind of "mega-success" they *could* have had if they had just stuck with making "Time to Pretend" or "Kids" over and over again - but instead, they just follow their own muse, which I have tons of respect for - and when their stuff *does* land, it's brilliant. But even the tracks that don't are always interesting.
This definitely reminded me of Elliott Smith from the get go, as we say here. Love the channel and the kind, honest reviews of songs. This new album is going to be the best of the year. I'm already obsessed with the singles. I ate too many mushrooms recently and sat in my car and listened to bubblegum dog and mother nature over and over again for 2 hours straight. Great for post COVID brain healing.
I love this band and have been a giant fan when i got into them about 11 years ago. I love that i may not catch n album but have come back to enjoy new works knowing its going to be some kind of experience to add into my symphony of life.

I love the song and the video is very touching. I first heard it the other day when it came out and now upon 2nd listen I am realizing that it reminds me of elliott smith, sounds like something that could have been on his Posthumus album from a basement on a hill, both musically and lyrically. i'm glad Mr. Hawkins was aware of the fact that Fine de Claire was an oyster because i was not. What a clever way to say "the world is my oyster"
You single handedly encapsulated why this album will be known as MGMT's magnum opus with one word "Human". MGMT at times felt like it was missing this in some senses and this album humanizes them an a whole new level
Great to hear MGMT on this channel. I would recommend to go back and listen to Oracular Spectacular, their debut album. Time to Pretend is a great song and basically about the myth of becoming a rock star.

I love watching Justin's videos. They make the stress of the day melt away. MGMT is a great band. Very eclectic. Everyone needs to listen to MGMT's Brian Eno if they haven't already. I've been listening to Nothing to Declare daily since its release. Such a beautiful song. Can't wait for Loss of Life. I didn't think it was possible for Connecticut to produce such a super cool band.
I have a suggestion no one probably wants, but if anyone likes MGMT's more psychedelic stuff, like Flash Delirium, listen to it with Daily Nightly by The Monkees. Good stuff.
You should listen to their congratulations album. It’s very interesting, specifically give ‘it’s working’ and ‘flash delirium’ a listen. But ideally give the whole album a listen through. Thanks for the vid
I got into MGMT recently and there is so much to chew on lyrically also. All their albums are worth a listen (and a review 🤞) and they are all so different. I’ve been blasting “One Thing Left to Try” off the Little Dark Age album on repeat
3:03 Led Zeppelin vibes 3:18 Beatles - Yesterday vibes + 3:25 Red Hot Chili Peppers - Scar Tissue vibes 4:00 Queen vibes... Sorry for dragging you into my vibenerd universe 😅
Justin, you have to watch Paulo Nutini's live version of MGMT's 'Time to pretend' - brilliant vocals and the lyrics just come through so clearly, and will resonate for an auld rock'n'roller like yourself
Possibly a little known fact: you were correct with your first instinct about what MGMT was short for. It is "management" or more specifically "The Management" which was their original name when the group (and its members) was (and were) still very young. I only know this thanks to another video I was watching right before I clicked on this one. It was a video titled "When you self-sabotage your own success" on a channel called "Middle 8." Maybe check it out if you'd like. I'm not associated with it. I just felt compelled to share this interesting tidbit of information.
Straight away the similar sound of Simon and Garfunkle, i love songs that have a mix of nostalgia and new. Very chilled-out song, something i would listen too if i was in a chill mood with a nice glass of wine. Usually, i am a more energetic metal person however, i will sit down later today and listen to this band. Thanks so much for this
Never heard any of MGMT’s music before. Wasn’t expecting it to be so melodic & “pretty”. Very peaceful tune, reminds me of Dionne Warrick’s ‘Walk On By’ and The Mammas & The Papas for some reason 🤷🏻♀️ Guess it’s got a very ‘60’s feel to it. I like it. 🥰 Definitely one to lie down & chill out to. 😌
@@bitbat9Brilliant song! Had me hooked from the first bar. Thank you for the recommendation. 🥰 However, the video is not vegan-friendly, has no business being so sad and should not have made me laugh out loud at the end! 😅😂😂😂 Utterly bizarre! As much as I enjoyed it, I’m going to have nightmares about human-sized featherless chicks shedding body parts in the desert now… 😔
Totally surprised me as well! Love the sound and I agree, echoes of Simon and Garfunkel, which I loved! Going to check this band out! I wish there was more of S&G's, and CSNY type of music being written by new artists, but also produced in a manner where the vocals and instruments shine through as they are meant to. Not like the main stream stuff today where compression is added to everything! ✌️
Love all off MGMT's back catalogue (although 3rd album was a bit pants) but this album is shaping up to be something great with the tracks I've heard so far! Awesome video as per usual 😍
Man MGMT is like the first band I have memory of listening to. Time to Pretend and Kids when I was like 10 or 11 maybe, what a throwback not listened to them in years, you should definitely listen to those 2, and electric feel which you mentioned. Dont mind this one either, very different to their older stuff though
Wow I did not expect my favorite Rock singer quite likes my favorite Indi band! Also, MGMT is an acronym for "Management" they chose while playing house shows when attending University.
Kids and Time to Pretend put MGMT on the map with their debut, but they have been consistently entertaining and interesting ever since. Justin, you might really dig a couple of their lesser known singles that no one has mentioned yet: Flash Delerium and Little Dark Age.
I would’ve never thought this is a MGMT song, sounds so different to the other stuff I know (which is not that much). Thanks for your thoughts about it. Fun to see / hear. I’m sick in bed but now feel better, thanks!
Justin, I Check the new MGMT song because I stop your video just to listen to this song. The arrangement as some similarity with a Beatles song called Julia or an America band song. These special picking is so hanging up that makes the song very good. The song and the video is special. It’s a piece of art this song. Mgmt means: the management.
Honestly, they're one of the bands of my generation. Consistently beautiful. Constantly evolving. They started with megahits but man oh man has their catalog proven to be a constant companion. Cried all throughout the new album
The MGMT (Management) album "Little Dark Age" is really incredible. It starts out kind of odd with a song about a girlfriend that works out too much... but stick with it! The album picks up from there and has so many fantastic flavors and textures. You will like it JUstin, just be sure to listen all the way through. Its a true ALBUM and not just a collection of songs. It needs to be consumed whole.

Love hearing your take, your thoughts on it. Andrew and Ben have done some great stuff through the years. This track doesn't disappoint.
MGMT's catalog = one for you and one for us. Glad it's a "one for you" year.
Yes! Listen to ALL of their music!
Very sophisticated sound......heard them a few times over the decades.......but my fave band for a long time was Sonic Youth.......very different. 3:46
The group making music today. Absolutely genius! I highly recommend diving into an album from start to finish.
Most underrated band from the last 20 years.
Simon & Garfunkel vibes for sure - also reminded me of the late 60s band The Millennium. Nice Track !
Definitely. "It Won't Always Be the Same" should have been a hit.
I felt White Album vibes
You single handedly encapsulated why this album will be known as MGMT's magnum opus with one word "Human". MGMT at times felt like it was missing this in some senses and this album humanizes them an a whole new level
Great to hear MGMT on this channel.
I would recommend to go back and listen to Oracular Spectacular, their debut album.
Time to Pretend is a great song and basically about the myth of becoming a rock star.
Imagine being a supernova made of diamonds - now, THAT'S a rock star!
Definitely hear the simon and garfunkel as well as some Elliot Smith in there. It’s a departure from their hit songs which I do recommend a listen to.
500k subscriber HD special. Quality is crispy. Edit: The girl in the vid has it rough. Not the arms but recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Info in the MGMT video description.
That's what happens when my producer is films it instead of me.
Loving the cinematic look of this video.
Thank you for instantly realising who it was this reminded me of! BTW they were initially called The Management but changed to MGMT.
they are legends...love how they always did it their way
Touching and in analyzing, compassionate. 📿
I love watching Justin's videos. They make the stress of the day melt away. MGMT is a great band. Very eclectic. Everyone
needs to listen to MGMT's Brian Eno if they haven't already. I've been listening to Nothing to Declare daily since its release.
Such a beautiful song. Can't wait for Loss of Life. I didn't think it was possible for Connecticut to produce such a super cool
band.
I have a suggestion no one probably wants, but if anyone likes MGMT's more psychedelic stuff, like Flash Delirium,
listen to it with Daily Nightly by The Monkees. Good stuff.
You should listen to their congratulations album. It’s very interesting, specifically give ‘it’s working’ and ‘flash delirium’ a listen. But ideally give the whole album a listen through. Thanks for the vid
Every one of their albums is majorly different from the last.
And Siberian Breaks !!!!!❤❤
Saw them in Seattle and it was amazing. Then I saw the Darkness and MGMT took second place in my all time favorite bands to see live.
Glad you finally got to know them check their live recording 11:11
Listen to congratulations by mgmt
@@bitbat9 ok then, BRB! 🥰
@@bitbat9Brilliant song! Had me hooked from the first bar. Thank you for the recommendation. 🥰 However, the video is not vegan-friendly, has no business being so sad and should not have made me laugh out loud at the end! 😅😂😂😂 Utterly bizarre! As much as I enjoyed it, I’m going to have nightmares about human-sized featherless chicks shedding body parts in the desert now… 😔
@@NinStardust Next Siberian Breaks is their master piece from the some album.
@@NinStardustlisten to all the albums!
So you know the Jim Diamond track, eh! Not heard them before, but will be checking out more from them. Thanks for the introduction to their stuff.
MGMT's song "Kids" released almost 15 years ago defined a vibe. Impossible to avoid that song popping off in so many cultural contexts.
The nothing to declare video touched my soul the first time I saw it❤
You crack me up so much, always brighten my day ❤️
Totally surprised me as well! ✌️
Its "The Boxer" by Simon and Garfunkel you are thinking of, it was my first thought when the song started
I said that right before I read your text.
I like how you say you "don't remember" their 2 hits, yet you remember their signature sound of "synths w/ the dancy beat"
😄
Love all off MGMT's back catalogue (although 3rd album was a bit pants) but this album is shaping up to be something great with the tracks I've heard so far! Awesome video as per usual 😍
Man MGMT is like the first band I have memory of listening to. Time to Pretend and Kids when I was like 10 or 11 maybe, what a throwback not listened to them in years, you should definitely listen to those 2, and electric feel which you mentioned. Dont mind this one either, very different to their older stuff though
Thanks again, mate… you are emotional and comedically endearing. Luv yer stuff man! 🍻
Agree Justin. Thought was most likely Cloudy by Simon and Garfunkel when first heard it. Love MGMT
Hey Justin, have you heard the entire album? it's a masterpiece. You're gonna love it.
There is a Simon and Garfunkel vibe but it immediately reminded me of Mercury Rev, the production especially.
I like how Justin guessed the reason for the name and then talked himself out of that reasoning in under 30 seconds
Yes, the half step lowering of the chord: You've heard in lots of Spanish stuff.
Honestly, they're one of the bands of my generation.
Consistently beautiful. Constantly evolving.
They started with megahits but man oh man has their catalog proven to be a constant companion.
Cried all throughout the new album
"Congratulations" is my favorite song
Love ya, Justin. MGMT is great. Always complex and kind of floaty. To me at least.
I have seen them live! They are great. 💫✨🌟
