I love this movie. Probably seen it a hundred times. I was one of those 80s kids who almost went into the Navy because of it. I think my favorite call back to this film from the new Top Gun is Penny Benjamin, the admiral’s daughter who Maverick did the flyby for, just barely referred to by Goose, then later by his wife during the diner scene.
P.S. I loved Top Gun: Maverick, too. Seen it a dozen times already. The first time, I was laughing/crying simultaneously, uncontrollably, on more than one occasion. It’s so good. It would be easy to argue it’s the superior film of the two, but it wouldn’t be anything without the first film and 36 years of nostalgia and permeation of our culture. I’ll never forget touring Miramar back in 1990 and seeing the officer’s club where the infamous “you’ve lost that lovin feeling” scene happened.
My brother in law had just joined the Navy when this came out. He said it was like freaking crack to almost every dude alive. Seeing this in the theater when it was released was a little surreal. It was a great movie and a great soundtrack. I love Val Kilmer so this was awesome. Yes, definitely react to Top Gun Maverick.
The parody of this, called Hot Shots (starring Charlie Sheen), is well worth a watch. The sequel, Hot Shots: Part Deux, is a parody of the Rambo films and also hilarious.

I actually recall reading about a conversation in one of those tech magazines a while ago where someone was talking about dogfighting with a test pilot for the F-35 (because some people had said the F-35 sucks at close in aerial maneuvering) and the pilot essentially said that if an F-35 pilot lets an enemy get THAT close, they have actually fucked up. The idea, as you say, is to kill the enemy aircraft long before they get close enough to see visually.
@@davidbennett1357 Most of what pilots do can be handled automatically. The pilots are the almost the redundancy for the computer systems at this point. The jets can take off, and land automatically using the ACLS (Automatic Carrier Landing System), which pulls the INS (Inertia Navigation Systems), GPS, altimeter, etc., readings, and triangulates where the plane is in relation the carrier, even adjusting for the pitch, and yaw of the carrier on the waves (so the wings don't clip the deck on landing if the jet is not properly oriented). The ACLS came out in 1963. We learned about it in Navy AT-O school (Aviation Electronics Technician). Our instructors said we technically don't need to pilots to even take off, or land, but they do so to maintain their skills. Likewise, the jets all have had IFF (Identification of Friend or Foe), which reads signals emitted by all the jets. They can tell if someone is an enemy from miles away. And... since the US controls the GPS satellites, we can actively block signal to enemy jets to make our jets harder for them to see (at least in theory; I'm not sure that we've ever had to resort to that). I am so surprised that you didn't even mention the director Tony Scott. He is in my top 5 directors. That cinematography is Tony Scott. You know that it's a Tony Scott movie. Beverly Hills Cop 2 and Days of Thunder, to name a couple. Keep up the awesome work! 🤘
I snuck into the cinema when I was 9 (1986 in Austria) to see this movie. Love it. To you see "Das Boot". Would like to see your first time watching reaction. Or after "Top Gun" of course "Hot Shots!"
Tony Scott was a masterful director like his brother, but with this inherent ability to inject the viewer into the scenes making you feel like you were the one strapped to the outside of the F-14 Tomcat. Top Gun as far as I'm concerned, is one of the top 5 movies of the 1980s, with the others being Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Ghostbusters and Back to the Future. What gets me now after having gone back and watched it is just how revered it is by the creators of Maverick with the number of small character traits they zone in on, like the hug, down to the way Maverick even checks the time on his watch.
@@DonnaCPunk Very much a shame. He did turn to producing, but directing Days of Thunder, Domino, Enemy of The State and even Beverly Hills Cop 2 (for the change of tone from the original) are such entertaining films, I can forgive that he produced Numb3rs.
This is my favorite movie of all time. Seriously have watched probably 100 times and own the VHS, DVD, 30th anniversary DVD and Blu Ray also saw Top Gun: Maverick opening night and now own that Blu-ray. So glad you guys have finally watched this on your channel! The F-14 Tomcat will always be my favorite fighter plane
I like your reaction. And you are right. every scene could be a postcard. The strength of many 80s films is the interaction between pictures and music. That shows emotions. And that's why movies stick in our minds
I was stationed on the USS Carl Vinson as a plane captain (directing the pilot and doing final checks on the aircraft before a flight) when this movie came out. The flight deck is incredibly noisy and busy and your head has to be on a swivel, but it really filled me with pride watching the flight ops with Danger Zone blaring in the background. It made my job look super cool and the next time I was working on the flight deck, I would be playing Danger Zone in my head while I was working.
Something I never noticed until now: Maverick constantly refers to Iceman by his actual last name as a slight, until he learns to respect Iceman at the end.
Loved the reaction. As a kid my parents took me to "the show" as my Mom called it almost every weekend. This is the only movie we went to twice in the theater. Good memories 😊
1:55 Actually, _Iron Eagle_ opened first just mere months before _Top Gun_ . _Top Gun_ went with the US Navy F-14 Tomcat while _Iron Eagle_ went with the US Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon still used today. Both films used LIVE dogfight air choreography for action sequences and high adrenaline music. 17:45 Directed by Tony Scott.
The "Hemlock is it?" was a subtle joke. Hemlock is a poisonous plant, famously drank by Socratese at his execution. She was referencing that he probably was punishing himself internally.
The actor who played Tom Cruise's Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) after Goose died, is Clarence Gilyard, Jr. He's also known for playing Theo the hacker in the first "Die Hard" film, and also for playing Chuck Norris's sidekick on the "Walker: Texas Ranger" TV series.
i've always found Top Gun to be a weird movie, i can't say i'm a fan because i've never purposefully chosen to watch it(generally i see it if someone else chooses to watch it) yet i've always enjoyed it each time i have watched it. the Maverick film on the other hand i'm a huge fan off and have watched it a few times, i hope you react to it soon.
Fun fact: One of the songs under consideration was “Reckless” by metal band Judas Priest. The band denied its inclusion because it wouldn’t have been on the “Turbo” album, and they regret that decision due to how well “Danger Zone” did on the charts.
After watching Tarantino explain this movie, it's hard for me to watch this movie without seeing his view lol. Great movie though. I feel you guys should react to Hot Shots. It's a parody of this movie.
Just in case you missed it: Merlin (the guy who replaces Goose at the end and was flying with the guy who quit during the opening) is Tim Robbins. He's the actor who played Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption.
yeah this movie increased enlistment by quite a bit. I even went into the service just to be a fighter pilot. sadly I was too big (6'8") for the cockpit so I had to settle for fixing aircraft instead of flying them. I went in as an Aviation Electricians Mate though I did get a specialization in H-60's because a guy in my class wanted to be stationed in CA to be near his family so we ended up swapping first assignments which had me stationed and going into an extra training in roughly the same location.
I'm not a dude and I'm a pacifist so I never thrilled to this movie like so many did. I think Tom Cruise is up there with the best actors who have ever lived, too bad it seems he is such a total AH as a human being. I think he should have won an Oscar for his performance in Rain Man (1988). If you haven't seen that movie it's a must. Dustin Hoffman did win an Oscar for his part in it. A friend of mine lives just up the street from that little house by the beach that they used as where the Kelly McGillis character resides.
This movie sparked a childhood love of planes, and though it never scaled up to being a real pilot (only a half hour of actual stick time in a prop plane), let alone a Navy pilot, I am quite good at flying in Digital Combat Simulator and love flying the F-14. BTW, at the beginning when Cougar is on approach and the jet is swinging back and forth left and right, THAT is a very real condition the aircraft can get into and it is freaky as hell to experience (simulated) and to fix without going around on the approach. I can't imagine being half-panicked and trying to do an approach, at dusk, on a carrier. Yuk.
One thing about this (and other movies about pilots)... No one gets a cool call sign. That's how pilots troll each other. I ended up as a Navy Corpsman in a Marine Corps squadron. Some of our pilots' call signs: Gaysian, Cumster, Bukkake (he had a Hungarian name that kind of sounded like the word bukkake), Bundy (he looked a bit like Ted Bundy), Chimmy, and our Commanding Officer's call sign was "S.H.O.E." (Stupidest Human on Earth). A lot of them are inside jokes, word play, or point out something embarrassing the person did.
I hope you guys can do a reaction to "Dracula: Dead and Loving it", it is directed by Mel Brooks (The guy who made "SpaceBalls" Movie), and is another hilarious comedy to watch, one of my all-time favourites. @NiceDudeMovieNight - Just found your channel, and you guys have the best and most authentic reactions I've probably ever seen. I would love to watch you guys watch "Top Secret". It's in the same genre as "Airplane" and "Naked Gun" but is a little less known. And it is Val Kilmer's big screen debut.
Welcome to the channel! We really appreciate that. With the amount of recommendations we're getting for Top Secret and Hot Shots, we're definitely adding it to the list 😅
"React to that movie sometime" You gotta do it sooner rather than later. Hell, it should be your next video :P This movie was s staple growing up, I'd rent it out a lot as a kid, and then recorded it on VHS to watch whenever I wanted. It was one of the first movies we got on DVD, and just like every other kid who watched it, made me want to be a fighter pilot. Couldn't do it in the real world, but I love flying the F-14 in every flight simulator I have...
I was 14 when this came out and I've see it a LOT. it wasn't until a few months ago that I noticed a set dressing error. The scene where Cougar turns in his wings and Maverick gets the notice he's going, there's a picture of an F-5 nearly in the center of the frame. The F-5 is the plane used to "play" the MiG-28s. They make a big deal about how no one has ever seen one up close later in the movie.
If you want another jet fighter movie. Before Top Gun there was two big military movies. The final countdown what happens when a top of the line navel vessel is time warped to December 7, 1941. Hell's Angels it's the movie that helped George Lucas make a lot the cinematography and edits for star wars.
I wanted to be a fighter pilot so nad because of this movie. I was heart broken as I got older and learned the height cut off was 6'2" and I was projected to he over that. What a gut punch
There’s not a lot of fighter movies because this and Iron Eagle,Firefox and Blue Thunder set the bar really high so a lot of the movies that tried to do the same couldn’t match the quality.
Please do the parody "Hot Shots!" with Charlie Sheen (Topper -> Maverik), Jon Cryer (Wash Out -> Goose) and Cary Elwes (Iceman -> don't rember his call sign)
Flying through jet wash can disrupt the flow of oxygenated air into the engine intake and cause a stall. The F-14 is such a big plane with their engines so far apart that it really freaks out when it suddenly has thrust coming from only one side
19:09 Feels like you guys missed the reference. Hemlock isn't alcohol, it's a poison associated with suicide (see Socrates). I think what she's implying is that at this point, Maverick is committing career suicide.
Seeing this movie as kid, for the longest time I was very confused about what the MIG-28 was, but it's not real. Plane that portrayed MIG-28 in this movies was actually a USAF F-5. This was so confusing back then :D
Tom Cruise is a runt. In order to hide the height difference he Stands on Fruit crates, Leans on every surface or they use close up shots. Anything that will get him at eye level with his fellow cast. In reality, he's the perfect height to be a fighter pilot. The box was not built to seat giants.
It'd be funny to see your reaction to Iron Eagle (the first one) that came out at the same time as Top Gun. Cessna racing a dirt bike through the mountains, F-16s fighting the standard 80s middle-eastern bady guys, cool old retired air force guy helping out. Pretty fun and a little campy, but then some of the best F-16 footage ever. Real footage, they paid the Israili Air force to use their jets and pilots (the US would not allow it). Anyway.. neat movie.. just not as "mature" as Top.Gun. oh.. and it has Loius Gossip Junior in it so... 😎

@@NiceDudeMovieNight the base theaters weren’t always great, but I don’t recall too much about this one - I’m fairly certain this is the first film I ever saw in a theater - about 7-8 years old.
Such a shame we lost Tony 10 years ago. Could've had a few more great films from him. I think he produced a lot later in his career tho.
Everyone is gonna ask for Top Gun Maverick but I'm gonna suggest doing Hot Shots. Especially after having seen Top Gun
This is a movie I can recite word for word. Ultra cheesy, ultra amazing. I love it!
NOW you dudes need to watch Hot Shots!
Val Kilmer is one of my all time favourite actors. You should catch a few of his other movies.
I remember when I first saw this I was waiting for Maverick's commanding officer to call him a SLACKER! 😂
The "Hemlock is it?" was a subtle joke. Hemlock is a poisonous plant, famously drank by Socratese at his execution. She was referencing that he probably was punishing himself internally.
Wife: What you watching?
Me: Oh... I'm just "Hangin' With The Boys" (Spikes Volleyball)
Dudes, gonna enjoy their need... Their need for speed
“Why aren’t there more jet pilot movies?”
Looks like you guys are gonna have fun with the ‘Iron Eagle’ franchise!
now that you guys've seen Top Gun...how about Hot Shots....I grew up on this, not understanding half of the jokes
So you like Val Kilmer ehhh? Have you seen Tombstone?!?!
Personally, my favourite Kilmer movie is "The Saint", where his sense of humour really shines through! 😉
I re watched that movie recently.... val is good in it but the rest of that movie is AWFUL
I’ll be your huckleberry
The actor who played Tom Cruise's Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) after Goose died, is Clarence Gilyard, Jr. He's also known for playing Theo the hacker in the first "Die Hard" film, and also for playing Chuck Norris's sidekick on the "Walker: Texas Ranger" TV series.
Its only inevitable that Hot Shots be done after this
Absolutely!!!!
i've always found Top Gun to be a weird movie, i can't say i'm a fan because i've never purposefully chosen to watch it(generally i see it if someone else chooses to watch it) yet i've always enjoyed it each time i have watched it.
the Maverick film on the other hand i'm a huge fan off and have watched it a few times, i hope you react to it soon.
Okay, you guys got this out of the way. Time for HOTSHOTS!
100% agree
At 3:30 , when Cougar is trying to land, reminds me of the Top Gun video game on the NES. Great game for it's time.
Way to be Humanitarians, Nice Dudes🙏🏼
You guys should watch another great movie with Val Kilmer called "The Ghost and the Darkness." It's really underrated.
For Val Kilmer, I was always a fan of "The Saint". That is a good one too though.
Oh yeah, The Ghost And The Darkness would be such a fun reaction.
Fun fact: One of the songs under consideration was “Reckless” by metal band Judas Priest. The band denied its inclusion because it wouldn’t have been on the “Turbo” album, and they regret that decision due to how well “Danger Zone” did on the charts.
Not to mention the attention it got from Archer. 😀
@@petrosinella Quick! Message the creators and see if they could swap the songs!
Okay, now you guys need to watch the spoof movie Hot Shots
4:17 Tom Cruise is really good at those “what can I tell ya?” non-verbal side-eye facial looks
When Charlie asks if he's drinking hemlock she's implying that he's suicidal. Hemlock tea is an ancient poison.
"In the immortal words of Socrates: 'I drank what?'"
i cant wait for their reaction to the most 80s bromance ever
After watching Tarantino explain this movie, it's hard for me to watch this movie without seeing his view lol. Great movie though. I feel you guys should react to Hot Shots. It's a parody of this movie.
Just in case you missed it: Merlin (the guy who replaces Goose at the end and was flying with the guy who quit during the opening) is Tim Robbins. He's the actor who played Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption.
the opening of the movie is the perfect 'save the cat' moment
yeah this movie increased enlistment by quite a bit.
Yuk.
You cut one of the best lines. After the volleyball game, when someone shouts, "Mother Goose you 🐱!"
I saw that aircraft carrier opening scene and all I could think about was "Hot Shots"... if you haven't seen it, please react to it :)
Of you guys haven't seen it yet I would recommend Joe vs The Volcano for some Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan comedy gold.
When I saw the pixelated thumbnail, I thought this was Hot Shots. Super disappointing, hopefully you guys can do that next
I hope you guys can do a reaction to "Dracula: Dead and Loving it", it is directed by Mel Brooks (The guy who made "SpaceBalls" Movie), and is another hilarious comedy to watch, one of my all-time favourites. Would love to see a reaction to this! :) Thank you guys for uploading all of your wonderful reactions to movies for us 😊
Seriously, don't wait. Just make Top Gun: Maverick your next movie. You know, while Chris is on the 80's high of the first one.
I wish there were more fighter pilot movies...
Iron Eagle has entered the chat 🤓
"React to that movie sometime" You gotta do it sooner rather than later. Hell, it should be your next video :P
This movie was s staple growing up, I'd rent it out a lot as a kid, and then recorded it on VHS to watch whenever I wanted.
Grew up wit this one. Tony Scotts masterpiece. Love it❤❤
The principal from back to the future is indeed in this
Another Jet movie is Flight of the Intruder. It has some story issues, but the flight scenes are really good.
17:46 the fact that she doesn't blame him always get me.
If you want another jet fighter movie. Before Top Gun there was two big military movies.
The final countdown what happens when a top of the line navel vessel is time warped to December 7, 1941.
Hell's Angels it's the movie that helped George Lucas make a lot the cinematography and edits for star wars.
little known fact...Merlin (Mavericks rear in the final scene) is played by Tim Robbins (Shawshank Redemption)
I wanted to be a fighter pilot so nad because of this movie. I was heart broken as I got older and learned the height cut off was 6'2" and I was projected to he over that. What a gut punch
Now is the perfect time for you to watch Hot Shots!
Now you guys have to watch the parody, Hot Shots, but don't watch the sequel Hot Shots: Part Deux until after you've seen Rambo 2&3!
There’s not a lot of fighter movies because this and Iron Eagle,Firefox and Blue Thunder set the bar really high so a lot of the movies that tried to do the same couldn’t match the quality.
"Should we watch Top Gun Maverick?"
Trick question, right?
Top Gun and Rocky IV... the ultimate fucking soudtrack on those movies.. Never to be outdone.
Yeah, maybe they thought it was like absinthe.
Now you guys need to watch Hot Shots hahahaha
Gotta follow this up with Hot Shots
Seeing this movie as kid, for the longest time I was very confused about what the MIG-28 was, but it's not real. Plane that portrayed MIG-28 in this movies was actually a USAF F-5. This was so confusing back then :D
Dam that star wars talk made me think of the Second movie lol
In Maverick Top Gun Tom Cruise was really flying
Tom Cruise is a runt. In order to hide the height difference he Stands on Fruit crates, Leans on every surface or they use close up shots. Anything that will get him at eye level with his fellow cast. In reality, he's the perfect height to be a fighter pilot. The box was not built to seat giants.
Iron Eagle & Firefox are the other two pilot movies I can remember.
Watch Hot Shots now, perfect follow up
That was awesome! Please do Maverick! You guys are my new favorite reaction channel! :)
No wonder the recruitment for the Navy went up after this film. There is a Movie section in the Pentagon that was involved making this film. As many other films as the departement of defense will tell you on their website😉 it´s nice to be of service
You guys really need to react to "Iron Eagle" which is, in my opinion, the quintessential 80s fighter pilot movie.
I have binged all your videos... LOVE THEM! LOVE YOU GUYS!!! I truly hope that one day - if you can find the movie 1. God's Must be Crazy 2. Cool Runnings 3. Ghost and the Darkness. I truly hope at some time these cross your paths, or maybe they have, but hearing your insight about any of these would be amazing!! Come whatever... You guys remind me how much fun 80-90s movies were... I miss them so MUCH!!
My dad was in the Navy when this movie came out.
I had a sick jean jacket with a bunch of Navy patches on it. My dad took me to see the movie at the base theatre a year or two after it came out😅
Covered my eyes during the sex scene.
Oh wow, what was it like seeing it at the base theater? That must’ve been a cool experience
@@NiceDudeMovieNight the base theaters weren’t always great, but I don’t recall too much about this one - I’m fairly certain this is the first film I ever saw in a theater - about 7-8 years old.
Some of my friends dads were fighter pilots - these characters in the film were like the real people I saw every day working alongside my Dad.
Yes yes please do Top Gun: Maverick! It can't just stop there!
it won't!
When are these guys gonna watch the castle?
that comment's goin' straight to the pool room
I would guess that they precise "Present Day" to oppose to the fact that the school was created in 1969 as explained a bit earlier 0:44.
I was thinking that it was just assuring viewers that they were starting out in modern times rather than starting with like a flashback or flash forward.
@NiceDudeMovieNight @19:07 Hemlock isn't booze, it's poison... commonly used for the big s.
You need to watch Hot Shots! 1991 after this
