It works really well. I actually thought some of the wheels on the flat cars were the black plastic ones until I saw them upclose! Cheers, Andy

A nice layout. like you, I also used rubber mats under track on a portable layout - cheaper than cork and worked well.

Hi Andy, Cleaning wagon wheels is not my favorite job but must be done. I have never used metal polish but seeing your amazing results I may give it a go. The container wagon is quite long, I havent seen one with 3 containers before. Nice Steamer and GW Vans running very smoothly. Just subbed. Cheers, Paul.👍👍🙏
Hi Paul. Not my ideal past time either! Check out my follow up episode too. I test a few methods suggested in this one. Not sure of the model number of the container wagons in this episode, but the new number is Hornby R60131. I did really well to get those GW wagons. They are really nice :) Cheers, Andy

Great video, try letting the IPA do the work. Soak wheels for 3 hours in bowl of IPA. After that one wipe of cotton bud soaked in the IPA removes everything…..

Hi there, great video. Honestly be careful using that polish it may take off more than just dirt. Fine if the wheels start of shiny silver but not if chemically blackened. Just a thought.
I have no idea what was on these wheels. They were in a terrible state. I did think they had been chemically done, but some were noticeably darker than others. It was more than that though. These wagons would derail on the straights! Cheers, Andy

I don't think I'd have the patience. I'd be tempted to put a Scalextric car tyre on the opposite wheel at full speed and use the bud on the one to be cleaned while it's spinning at full speed in the bogie.
That might actually work! I have in the past tried a Dremmel type tool with a polishing attachment. It doesn't work as well as by hand. The polishing wheel makes the actual wheels hot, and if you are holding them, you burn your fingers! Also it was no quicker and a lot more messy, because the polish compound would be flung from the polishing wheel! Cheers, Andy
Nice clean wheels there. On another matter though, you may want to consider losing those rapid blur transitions at the beginning. They were a bit headache enducing

Errr, weren't those wheels anodized? If so, that's a coating to improve the wear resistance of the wheels.

Hi. What ever it was certainly didn't improve running, they were awful. They derailed even on the straights! All I can say for certain is that now they are all shiny, they run perfect. Cheers, Andy.
Not so much cleaning the wheels as removing the deliberately chemically blackened finish. I'm just wondering why, unless like me, you like shiny chrome looking things ?
Now cotton buds are fine for one wagon set of wheels, but a whole rake !
I'd recommend the use of a mototool e.g. a Dremel on its slowest speed with a thin dense felt polishing wheel. That would do the same job in seconds.
Yes there appears to be some form of paint and / or some sort of chemical on some wheels, but also a lot of actual dirt. Regardless of what it was they didn't run at all well, even in a straight line they would fall off the rails. And what I forgot to mention in the video there was more drag when they were dirty. And yes I like shiny things so they had to be cleaned!! As mentioned in a previous comment I tried a dremmel type tool and in the end was no quicker. Less painful on the fingers though!!! The easiest solution is probably to just use a simple ultrasonic cleaner. It works well with metal objects and do not interfere with the chemical blackening of wheel sets and similar.

Where the Metal Wheel sets already in the Container wagons when you bought them as they're usually Plastic sets, if not may I ask where you got the Metal Sets from,

How do people let their wheels get so dirty?
I have no idea! These wheels were the worst I have ever seen, they would not run correctly at all. All sorted now though! Cheers, Andy
What a faff. 2000 grit paper. Much easier. Less mess. Less time.
Wasn't too messy with this method. Took a while though. I guess with sandpaper, you would have to be careful not to spend too much time in one area and I would think that after sanding you'd need to polish them up anyway? I have ordered a few different 'cleaners'. Thanks for the sandpaper idea. I will do a follow up video in the future and try these different methods. Cheers, Andy
@@Shelvington_Railway 2000 grit paper is very fine texture and if you cut a long strip off, 20mm wide, then keep folding every 5mm as and when it dirties out. Halfrauds do a multi-pack 1500/2000/2500. Lower numbers are too rough.
