    Your little collection of Great Central locos is really impressive Sam. You've got the D11, A5/9N, O4/8K and the J11. If you're able to get Hattons GCR coaches you could set up a really nice themed running session.

    It’s a great idea to do some of these older models and I like the reference to current pricing when assessing value for money and is good to see when marking down old mechanisms it’s also rewarded for good second hand market conditions

    I personally think there is nothing wrong with buying secondhand items so long as you know what you’re getting. Recently purchased a Hornby Black 5 off eBayUK, runs like a dream, and the tender is detachable 😉
    Interesting concept, Sam. Cheers.

      Most of my locos are secondhand. And rolling stock.
      The vast majority are in mint condition and I strongly suspect had little use before I bought them. Those I've bought brand new have usually been at large discounts.

    Another lovely and fascinating loco in your collection Sam. Oh yes, new old stock unused. First thing we always check is all wheels and the entire mechanism moving freely. Sometimes some rotating parts can even be stuck by hardened grease. A dab of WD40 might help to get them going to avoid any damage or unquatering, then still remove all of the grease throughout the entire mechanism with isopropanol and apply fresh lubricants on all the spots as per requirement. Motors failing might be a different matter of course, but your solution with a new micromotor in a diy cradle is just brilliant.The show you made on it was a joy. A cradle like that can also be made by scratch-build most likely and presumably. Anyway, a lovely loco Sam. Cheerio.

    It's a great idea to do some reviews on used items because many of us now buy more used than new because of the pricing.
    I would suggest everyone gives them a service especially if you're reviewing them because a lot of lubricants dry up over time and many people
    seem to over-lubricate them to try and quiet them down or whatever which can cause lots of issues. Cheers!

  • @OwenBudd1
    @OwenBudd1 2 місяці тому +2

    I think it’s a really good plan to do reviews of older models still on off, or common types people pick up secondhand, especially with the way new prices are a lot of your viewers will be more likely to buy a secondhand model than a brand new 2024 release.

    I got the ROD 3000 class professionally weathered and DCC fitted from ebay for 66 quid last year after searching for four months for one and I'm well pleased with it trundling round the layout with a long consist of coal wagons - never let ppl tell you that there's no bargains on the bay if you look hard enough for a while... You just have to be patient, set up a search alert and study the photos and description carefully. Btw I have just paid for my pre-order of the Accurascale (ex Hattons) class 66 (in Freightliner green) so I presume it's close to being in stock - I hope you can do a review of that release.

    Hi Sam, you mentioned about giving a potentially gummed up motor a refresh of lubricant. Forgive the ignorance but does that just involve lubricating all the accessable external moving parts, having IPA'd and cleaned them first? Another stellar video and as other commentators have stated great to see a 'second' hand Loco review. Keep up all your hard work!

  • @williamsquires3070
    @williamsquires3070 2 місяці тому

    Hi Sam. That coreless motor you’ve got in there has enough shaft sticking out the back that you could fit a small flywheel to it. That would give the model a few grams more weight and maybe improve the tractive effort a bit. 😊

    Funny story Sam, I actually have one of these. Although mine hasn't been the best performer, because about I think 6 months ago the motor completely bunt out and I've spent hours trying to get it back to work. Later I just gave up on it and ordered a new motor from Bachmann. Thankfully it's still running today, although now has a bit of a limp when it runs.

    A lovely locomotive in 1-1 scale at the Great Central Railway. A very simple and effective design. My fiance bought me the model second hand at a very reasonable price as it had some small glue marks on it, but nothing that really caught the eye. I have seen a special edition from Bachmann, in GCR green (goods livery) which is an extremly dark green, almost black, with lighter green and brown. Looks a real gem. I think they are very rare and very expensive though.

  • @Paraffinmeister
    @Paraffinmeister 2 місяці тому

    Bachmann did release this in GCR livery (I believe as a special release for the NRM) and it looked absolutely stunning! Interesting little thought that crossed my mind re pre-grouping goods locos, there seems to be a definite lean towards Scottish locos on that front: In the last few years we've had the NBR/LNER J36, the Caley 812 and the upcoming Rapido Highland Railway "Jones Goods"...
    Also, just a fun little aside, years ago I read about the Highland expressing an interest in the ROD examples when they were being sold cheap at the end of the war, so a pair were sent north for trial. On arrival at Perth, the Highland's CME took one look at them and sent them straight back south again (they were utterly worn out from their war service). Off the back of this though, I have an example as a "what might have been" Highland ROD, in the post war Highland unlined green and sporting the number 150 and the name "Seaforth Highlander".

    Three of the ROD copies of this locomotive survive in Australia, one of which is at the Richmond Vale Railway Museum.
    I have a mixed experience with the two Bachmann locos I got new prior to 2013. My first loco, an 0-6-0, still runs perfectly fine 13 years later and even survived a fall of a table. The 2nd, an F7 I got on sale for $25, started to run funny six years after I got it, especially at slow speeds. The motor was a cheap 3-pole motor that burnt out a few months later.

    Hi Sam, good video but I'd have liked to see a comparison to Hornby's Thompson O1 which is very similar as it's an updated version of the Robinson O4.
    It has a similar level of detail and although it's all plastic weighs almost exactly the same at 333g. However it has a much better mechanism and no seam on the top.
    With regards to price you can get Hornby O1s for £60-£100 second hand. I got a brand new one BR version for £75 from Kernows about 18 months ago.
    If like me you're not too bothered if you get an O1 or O4 I think Hornby's effort is the better choice due to it's far better mechanism.

    I have the 31-003A in LNER black, number 6184. KI bought her around the GBP 120 mark as far as I can see, I have her since my beginnings in OO scale around 2020. Not a bad deal at the time, even if the drivetrain is clearly outdated, and on the scroogey side. In LNER 2-8-0, the Hornby O1 is far better, and I don't mention another LNER O you'll know for being beyond naff... This one is a good candidate for a retool. Just get a decent mechanism for her would be a nice thing. It surprises me that nobody sells aftermarket kits to improve such nice engines, like new axles with bearings, tender pickups, coreless motor like yours, with a flywheel for a good drive, and better tender-engine connection. That certainly would be a nice sale to do.

      Two or three of the very similar ROD version are preserved in Australia.
      These were purchased in the twenties to be used on the extensive Richmond Vale private coal hauling railway.
      Searching Richmond Vale Railway should show some in use in the early seventies. Sam not allowing UA-cam links otherwise I would supply a link.

    Detail is great for the period. Motor sounds like a bit of a roll of the dice. If I was interested I’d want to be confident I could change the motor

    I’d give the mechanism 1-1/2 stars. It does have a separate keeper plate with wipers, so it can be serviced and cleaned when needed. That’s worth at least one star. And (going by the G.C.R model) if you look at the worm gear on it, you’ll notice that the middle is thinner than the ends to leave clearance for the spur gear; this is top quality (plastic) machining! That gives it another half of a star. 🌟😆 But, yeah, it’s sad to see Bachmann didn’t even make rounded slots for the axles, nor proper bearings, nor pickups on the tender wheels. 😢 Definitely don’t pay more than 125 £ for this.

    • @williamsquires3070
      @williamsquires3070 2 місяці тому

      Oh, yeah, and I forgot: the keeper plate is held on with screws, not plastic clips that’ll break. Another half a star. 😌

    You often criticise older Bachmann models for not having a very good mechanism, no proper bearings etc., and yet they seem to run very well, or at least all of mine do. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, and if a loco runs very well and consistently over a long time, then surely that suggests the mechanism is good. When Airfix entered the model railway market with the 14XX tank and the 61XX, everyone thought "Wow, they've put in a 5 pole motor" as though that would automatically make them good runners. In reality, a well designed chassis with a 3pole motor will run far better than those Airfix models ever did. Also, is it a problem that a 2-8-0 has no pick-ups on the tender, if it's already got 8 wheel pick-up? My 04 never stops or stutters going over pointwork.

    Fact: Their was an LMS Fowler class 7F 0-8-0 steam locomotive, and their is *NO* official HO scale model for it. I think Bachmann or Hornby should get to work on it.
    Also, I will continue to wait patiently for OO9 scale reviews. Their are good Bachmann models in OO9 scale.

    No axle bearings! The fact that they have square cutouts for the round axles makes me wonder if the original plan was to fit square bearing as seen in Walthers and Athearn and other better quality locos, and someone just cheaped-out at the last minute. That's inexcusable.

    Sam this may be a daft question. How do English names work? There are lots of people with names like Samuel or Chloe in the UK, so how do you people address another person without causing confusion? Where I'm from every name is uniquely made up of 2 to 4 Chinese characters, chances of having the same name is very small. I've been wondering this for a while now.

    arbitrary nonsequitor:
    Speaking of historic classics,
    dose Mr. Sam's trains remember very first locomotive he ever liked? if so which ones?
    Locomotive so sturdy that it lived through both World Wars? now THAT is impressive, disheartening that only one survives - i think i'd blame the "oh but its common, we needn't bother saving that one" mentality that led to many fantastic devices, machines and works (yes even books and scripts were lost to such things, often combined with miscommunication) being forgotten.
    I was going to say that i am glad its a trooper surviving eyars but than the engine transplant and the new old stock situations were revealed. damn shame it is so strenuous - i would assume the friction by itself should not be problem if the motor was picked just that bit more powerfull to compensate for the loss. My suspicion is that there WERE some bearings originally and for that iteration the engine was fine, than someone cut the costs and few corners without telling any engineers and welp there you go engines are dying. (Maybe cousin of El Cheap who made it into executive branch or something)
    Somehow the interior is noticably fuzzy. so is there a cat shedding or was locomotive just stored in some protective wool?
    Right aside for all that i reckon that is a good plan - gems from second hand market should be a good segment of the show, at least for those actively pursuing the hobby (i am here just for the Bowman and occasionaly silly experiements mostly but i do enjoy Mr. Sam's trains growth into strange and unexpected segments of the hobby, like building his own fleet of engines and stock.
