Another interesting video, Daniel. Back in 1960, when I first got into coin collecting, my LCS owner showed me how to use the nic-a-date to reveal the dates on the Buffalo nickels. When I would find a key date, he would buy them off of me or trade me for a coin that I would need for my collection. He taught me a lot about coins, and he hired me when I was old enough to work for him. Thanks for all you do to help educate everyone about this hobby and have a great day.

I know I have a couple of buffalo nickels. I bought them for $23 for Indian . And they date back to the early 1900s. Thanks for sharing this video Daniel. You have a beautiful evening and a wonderful day.

I never knew about it either. Might be worth buying lots of nickels that supposedly have no dates for a cheap price and see what happens!

Several years ago I bought a 16 ounce bottle of PCB Etching Solution from Radio Shack for $9. It contains the same chemicals as Nic-A-Date and is much cheaper, especially if you are able to share it with other collectors.
I never use cotton swabs to soak up the used solution. Instead, I have a small dish with a solution of water and baking soda where I soak the coins for about a minute to neutralize the acid. Then I rinse the coins off in water.
I use the solution on mintmarked and Two Feather Buffaloes. I also use it on dateless Shield and Liberty nickels. I've been able to find every key date Buffalo from 1913-1919, several Two Feather Buffaloes, a 1921-S, and a 1918/7-D.

Nice live demonstration. The best lesson here is that the coin is now damaged. So, know that before you try it at home. It's still a fun "science" lesson to show the kids.

When I was a kid some 65 years ago, I carefully used a pencil eraser to get critical parts of the date of these worn buffalo nickels decipherable. Back then there were many buffalo nickels still in circulation and I needed to fill my Whitman blue coin folder.😊

I saw a 1916/16 Buffalo nickel on eBay, that was acid treated and in an ICG slab. The seller wanted $800 for it, which I guess is a decent price, because that coin is very expensive when straight graded.

Thanks Daniel. I've never used Nic a Date before but knew of it. A no date Buffalo just isnt worth much. Great idea to get some no date Buffalos and some Nic a Date. You buy a Buffalo for a dime and sell it for $20...there ya go. Only thing I would encourage is if sold, the seller informs the buyer of what was done. For the more seasoned collector, you can kind of tell.

Love your informative videos. If we do find and error coin (double struck struck for example) or key date coins, where's the best place to sell them? I see videos where they are "auctioned for up to hundreds of thousands. Keep up the great videos.

Thanks for the video Daniel. It couldn't have came at a better time for me to watch. I was at my local LCS yesterday and remembered to ask them about having dateless Buffalo Nickels for this purpose. I ended up purchasing over 2 rolls of nickels for face value. So I have a fun weekend ahead of me, checking them all out. People will be complaining about ruining them, I'm sure. I say, "Who cares?" They're low grade anyway, and will still be worth more with the date revealed than not, especially if they reveal to be a key date, or even a semi-key date

Love these videos! There must be a better way to scan these coins to find the date. I wonder if LIDAR would work? They use that to see through jungle growth to find ancient Mayan ruins under the rainforest canopy from the air. There has to be a better way than the nik-a-date. Either way, it's awesome to see the old date emerge! Anyway, I always love your videos Daniel!

Les Merkin showed me how to use a soft lead (#4) artist's pencil. Just rub it gently over the date, look at it obliquely and frequently the date is visible. And if done carefully no damage results. Just wipe with a damp towel to clean it off.

@@CoinHELPu my dad once taught me a similar method but you use the pencil on paper which you put over the coin. Now I'm not so sure how abrasive paper is but when you're done with the pencil there should be a good impression of the coin on the paper with no damage to the coin itself

What I'd like to know is how would the average consumer go about getting coins for wholesale prices or even silver rounds to make a few extra $$ here or there. I'm a disabled veteran and they don't pay much at all and I'm not looking to get rich just get by and even downloaded the whatnot app hoping to maybe find some deals and reselling but it's not easy when there's a ton of coin dealers out there already on the app

This type of date restoring has been around since at least 1960. Guess I'm getting old. My fifth grade teacher was collecting Buffalos, Lincolns etc. He just called them acid date buffalo nickels. Worked very well in restoring "dateless" nickels. I just noticed that they also have a home made solution online they claim works, but any solution is really cheap. Then you hear some suggest a controversy in doing it, which is ridiculous. There is no controversy because without it you have no date in a coin worth nothing. At least with the solution you can see the date and now have a coin that fills a hole and is now worth a few bucks instead of a barely more than a nickel. Just a shame that the dates on a number of coins got worn off before the rest of the coin.

Would simply doing nick a date bring them back or would I need to do something different since they were previously nick a dated. Thanks

In my opinion, talk about cleaning, restoring, or date revealing is a bad thing for the hobby... it only serves to encourage others to put different kinds of liquids on coins and that's never a good thing regardless of the condition of the coin!

It’s not a bad thing for the hobby. People learn what it looks like when someone plays with a coin and doesn’t get ripped off. It should and will be talked about, repeatedly, on this channel.
