Adhesion grip and Hysteresis grip are intrinsically linked, but your explanation of the tire deforming into the tarmac surface features is a textbook example of Adhesion Grip. Tire Hysteresis refers to the difference in energy when deforming the rubber compared to the lower energy amount returned as the rubber restores, this energy difference is heat. Hysteresis is the primary cause of rolling resistance but it will occur whenever the tyre is deformed in any direction. The heat makes the rubber more pliable and soft, allowing for more contact area with the surface features, thus increasing Adhesion grip which allows greater tire load thus increased Hysteresis until excessive heat leads to chemical breakdown of the bonds. This results in increased shear (wear) rates, surface flashing, blistering and even de lamination.
@@SimracingPopometer Not sure why @lugs118 claims there is a mixup - I guess as usual nobody knows what they are talking about when it comes to physics. Nils gave a decent explanation of hysteresis grip, although there was some cringe for the insider.

I would echo what Niks said about looking this up for yourself, it’s a fascinating subject but the academic papers are not exactly easy reading. I'm a beta tester and i think people are going to freak out in a big way when 1.6 drops. The road feel is so good now, total connection, and i've been having some of my best ever sim racing moments in 1.6. That extra feel of the road surface is a game changer for me.I was spending all my time in AC, RF2 or LMU but now AMS2 is comfortably my favourite sim. I'm certainly no professor in car /tyre physics but i am in awe of this game now. Everyone get excited.
I've always felt most connected to the car and road in ams2. The road feel has always been great. Ffb is way better than iracing. That sliding, on the other hand, has been making me not play it. excited for 1.6.
I'm seeing plenty of good details I like in this video; layman's explanation of tyre hysteresis, cleaner ui and buttons, understandable car behaviour, shader improvements, this is great! I'll likely get the whole dlc lot. Thanks man really nice video!
Really good preview, Niels. This update is a big step for AMS2, as much as it doesn't make the game perfect (and nothing never will in any game), and some disagreement we have about some aspects, I would say it is a no-brainer. Hypercars are the crown jewel here, IMO they are much better than in LMU.
I am afraid that LFM races outside GT3 will die pretty quickly … :/ just look at LFM GT2 and GT4 from ACC. or LMU. there is not much going on… I hope I am wrong, but I doubt that. I dont want to be THAT guy again. but there is actually a sim out there for stuff outside gt3s, with lots of people racing all around the clock. I wont say what sim because you probably know.
Very nice description of the changes. Ive been playing a lot of LMU so im curious how this feels. LMU is great, but its not perfect and i wish the FFB was a bit better and i do agree the low speed grip in LMU is a bit weird, cars feel really piggish at slow speeds.
Very very good explanation of grip! I tried GT3s on 1.6 yesterday and still found a very annoying amount of constant autorotation cornering, no setup work did get rid of it. Basically I felt the front always has more grip than the rear. I would like to know your feeling about it, i ended giving up for this :-/
Discuss with Kunos integrating Popometer into Evo in the future. Will be a game changer. You're gonna blow up in the next few months 💪 keep up the good work
i have a Moza 12nm setup and after some tuning in the current version of AM2, i love the way it look, FFB still lacking details so i’m really looking forward to this upcoming update. A lot of the community talks about Assetto Corsa as the benchmark for FFB but i have had no luck getting it to behave the way i expect. it is just really insistent between Kunos and community made cars and tracks.
But there's maybe a video you can do. Since recently you drove some real cars, possibly even a Porsche Cup? If so why not a video where you share your considerations about real racing cars compared to sim racing? Thanks a lot.
I purposefully put the car on the spot where it would snap to show the change to previous patches. if you don't go there it won't happen. keep TC on, keep brake bias forward enough and don't go too aggressive with the aero, then you shouldn't encounter that
@frankzappa2274 this is a weird comment because before 1.6 they slid even more. You're kind of contradicting yourself here. The whole 1.6 update started as a physics update to fix the sliding.
@@JustMamba Oh I'm happy To be wrong. It was just I was a bit tired and I just noticed he was losing traction And yes I noticed at one point he was doing that just to explain an effect. @@SimracingPopometer Daniel Karts 'Custom' FFB is so detailed in V1.5 and carries across to V1.6 REALLY nicely - some people find it too 'noisy' but it gives me everything from tyre wall flex (especially on the rear axle) to tyre judder during understeer. 👍🏁

@@SimracingPopometer not really, just download the faous 3 and do 3 laps on a circuit you know. And you feel straight away what you likes and whats do not suits you.
Another question. As youre one of the very very few sim youtubers that I think really explores sims (trying to actually understand whats going on and really exploring ffb and how the cars setup is affecting its handling) and doesn't just jump in, drive around for a while, looking at nothing in-depth and getting your conclusions that way. Would you say the cars behaviour (in terms of the rear slip and car rotation) is still heavily dependent on the differential setting like i think it is now (which people dont seeem to even look at beacuse they dont understand or dont have the time). Has Reiza adjusted the feeling/impact of the differentials on the cars to where they are mostly fine on default and dont need a "correction" from the players? I feel that would have a huge impact on how people perceive the game/sim Ride heights also tend to be higher than necessary, especially on the rear. Notice this more on formula cars
I always felt there is a huge interaction between differential setting and the slip/grip curve of the tire. I think differentials are much easier to implement as its more of a hard fact, whereas tires still have a bit of grey area (hence all sims are different there). but once you have more longitudinal grip, you can drive more open diffs and still have traction on exit. and vice versa if you don't have longitudinal traction you will need more diff lock and that will influence the entire feeling indeed in every driving scenario. this is where ACC has an advantage as the differentials in the GT3s can't be altered and remain locked in their ramp angles. the preload makes barely an impact on that. and thus when you make a change to the tire, you can test that in a kinda more laboratory with more control over side effects in the differential area.
Is this the only video or is there a more in-depth review coming as well, featuring a more diverse set of cars? As it stands this only highlights 3 of them. However it was nonetheless very informative, and I think you did a great job previewing the mainly interesting improvements for online racing, so thanks for this!
@@SimracingPopometer What I really want is to feel connected to the road, and not feel like there's a stick going through the middle of my car that it just spins on. Hi Niels and thanks for the video. I know you are a busy man, but can I ask you for a favor? Could you take the BMW M4 GT3 (Gen2) out on Imola in default conditions and with the default setup and see how feel about it? I'm in the AMS2 beta program and, while I do like what they have done with the tyre physics, I still believe there is something off with the low-speed lateral grip, especially with cars that don't have as much downforce as the prototypes and Formula 1 cars. Please take the BMW around Imola and hopefully you will see what I mean, especially coming out of the hairpin and chicane (alias the slow corners). The car to me feels like it floats sideways for a moment (no tyre scrubbing sound or response on my pedal haptics) before it rights itself, even when applying throttle not too aggressively. Like the grip curve starts at zero and stays there for too long. I hope you can find the time to test this. Otherwise I love AMS2 and I will definitely be driving the higher-downforce cars on LFM! :)
Hmm... I liked the video and you Nils, but why, out of all simulation racers out there, you would think that modelling the hybrid system of the Hypercars realistically (like supposedly in LMU) would be a hassle/negative thing? I take it you are not into Hypercars?
People like east and why gt3 is the most popular. Iracing hyper cars are extremely too easy. Only thing we can do is compare to rl and the onboard or videos. The auto mode for the battery, iracing has that also. LMU actually tamed their HY cars also, having the tires warm up a lot faster, not realistic. But people were crying and I’m sure the ams2 fanboys won’t want it too difficult/realistic. Will see…
the whole hybrid stuff is interesting from an engineering stand point and the whole energy management is a matter of bop. in the sim, while driving 300 it's difficult to be driver and engineer, and thus the entry barrier for full on simulated hypercars is pretty high. there's no value for the driver in caring for switching around the deploy and recharge modes
@@RacingWithChuck27 the deploy system is fully realistic in the 1.6 update. unlike other games the boost fills in the mandated power band just like it does irl, so there is not that much of a boost effect unlike other games. It reduces ICE power even when using electric power to fit it in the mandated power band. You can absolutely manually change deploy mode to attack or regen or even all the way off. There is a auto setting which isnt perfect and just makes a assumption on what you want to be doing, changing modes yourself will always be the fastest if you do it right. Also on tire front if you are out in the cold on medium or hards you will have a really bad time those first few laps.
@@SimracingPopometer I dont get this statement. As in LMU during a race, you only need to change maybe 2/3 settings in the MFD to change some VE/Deployment/Regeneration settings in the beginning of the race. If you take some time to watch the streams of Jernej Simoncic, Michi Hoyer, James Baldwin, its a matter of good setup before the race. Somebody with good knowledge of making setups and physics, can surely manage the hybrid system. There is not really a need to alter hybrid system at 300kmh during a race/qualy.
@jeroengoudeseune7209 I think my issue here is "if you take some time" these days. you can't jump in and drive. but that's probably every time you go to a sim you don't normally play

@@schleifjunkies that‘s why it will be in lfm with the update. I assume you did not read this before you commented. 😜 so there should be nothing holding ams2 back.
AMS2 is the only Sim actual where I feel the limit of grip and if I loose control that I can save it most times. in every other sim I crash everytime. I am beginner and don't eat that sharp loose of control. I don't want to learn break point. I just want to drive intuively any track without knowing it but at the limits. I love the forgiving of ams2. perhaps I should deactivate the automatic upgrade...
There's a problem though with what you describe: It's certainly not realistic to safe and recover the car from any error. Might be a better beginner experience, but then its not a good simulation anymore. If you just want to drive around without dealing with the perils of a simulation, then maybe forza or gran turismo is more your kind of thing. Or generally slower cars with road tires, as they have a wider margin of error than sharper race cars.

no. the way this likely works is just a "roughness" value of the surface. the game does not have this as actual 3D shape (no sim has). it's all happening in terms of calculation and parameters representing real life phenomena
all sims have that as part of their modeling as it's fundamental to how tires work. they just don't speak about it as explicitly. in the end all sims try to achieve realistic grip levels in all possible situations by considering as many influential factors as possible or as required to replicate the outcome

That's not what happens in a racing car, trust me That immersion for me is essential. With the same FFB of AMS2 yep, assetto corsa would be the top ever, no chance.

Might have been a stream issue. I’ve taken part in two of those races and I’ve seen very little warping . I’ve seen worse in iRacing in fact many times and that’s supposed to be the gold standard . Both races I took part in ran flawlessly and were a lot of fun .
My main issue with AMS2 was always the understeer that could be overcome by more steering angle. From the video it still seems to be the issue, seeing how the nose reacts to input. Do I have that right? Or is realistic understeer now a thing in AMS2 1.6?
(Was a gripe of mine aswell with pre-1.6) There is a clear and distinctive point on steering input that doesn't deliver any front authority anymore, which can vary between car types in when it happens and how abrupt it is. So nope, you don't have that right. Btw. of course the nose of a prototype race car will respond very well to inputs, they have a lot of grip.
But I've made my mind up AC. AMS 2 is cool but not my serious sim. At first it was ams 2, then iracing, but always had AC, but never dipped into it. So glad I tried this chicken and really tasted it's flavor.

I don't think so, no. at least not visible or adjustable. I'd say it's a good thing to reduce that complexity. the braking is communicative enough to not require it
The brake by wire in 1.6 automatically adjusts brake bias when the ERS is harvesting so the higher brake torqe at the rear is compensated for with a shift to the fronts (determined by the brake bias setting for target) - but no system to manipulate handling for mid corner actively.

I hope karts are better now, both the physics and AI behaviour. I love karts in AMS1. But in AMS2 they're pretty bad. And Reiza can't even think about making a career node without addressing karts.
I'm not sure they worked on karts that much, to be honest. I'm pretty sure that unfortunately karts were the last thing on their mind when it came to physics, and the only reason is that they are soooo different from any other car. There might be improvements, but don't get your hopes up that much.
Sadly another preview, where the recording is not fitted to 1440p... Track map is halfway hidden outside of whats recorded. We cant see the tyre temps as you are talking about them because of your sponsor logos
That's unfortunate, but at least the car has tyre pressure stats on the steering wheel, so for example at 13:54 you see that the rear left goes from 1.9 bar to 2.0 bar right before the car spins out.
it is a brilliant analysis on tyre model and physics. Despite the improvements that have made the game enjoyable, when I try to push it to the limit inevitably, major physics problems inevitably reveal themselves. Yet in words it always seems that Reiza does incredibly adavanced tyre modeld etc... but then in reality all this is not seen. I make some test in AMS 2: initially i drive as I would drive on ACC, AC, RFactor 2 for a few minutes then I do a test: I try to take a corner at much higher speed than the previous lap and the car skids and skids but magic! stays on the road as if an infinite grip were generated. I know for sure that doing the same on other sims the car would never stay on the road. So what s wrong with this physics! Why the grip limit seems much further than it would appear driving like in any other sim?
I hope Reiza finally fix the horrendous tire physics that all theirs cars have and the lack of immersion in terms of in car speed, the feeling you have driving cars it seems you're going slow, never feels the speed. Other thing they need to fix is the F1 cars engine. Here is what I mean with lack of speed immersion 13:14 It doesn't feel like you're driving fast.
@RacingWithChuck27 the fuel tank is pretty centered in these cars, I doubt it makes a difference. in the lfm test races with fuel the car didn't behave differently

I'm impressed that ams2 has impressed you this much - impressive 😊
I'm seeing plenty of good details I like in this video; layman's explanation of tyre hysteresis, cleaner ui and buttons, understandable car behaviour, shader improvements, this is great! I'll likely get the whole dlc lot. Thanks man really nice video!
why do a complicated time consuming animation when you have hands :D
Danke Nils für das Video! Super Einblick in die neue Reifenphysik!
Great simple explanation of histerisis Nils and cracking preview of v1.6. 😊👍
Fascinating stuff. Looks like the slip curve is more like a bunny slope than a sheer north face of the Eigar as with iRacing road :)
Why cover up the tyre's window when the topic of the video is tyre's?

Really good preview, Niels. This update is a big step for AMS2, as much as it doesn't make the game perfect (and nothing never will in any game), and some disagreement we have about some aspects, I would say it is a no-brainer. Hypercars are the crown jewel here, IMO they are much better than in LMU.
The sound of this game is straight up a banger
Looking forward to it. Icing on the cake would be a simple career mode like the standalone racing life.
Hi. I think that is planned for 2025.
A perfect person to make a preview, talking in detail about what is the most important!
Im really looking forward to this coming to LFM. Not overly fussed about the GT3 stuff, more all the other cool content
I am afraid that LFM races outside GT3 will die pretty quickly … :/ just look at LFM GT2 and GT4 from ACC. or LMU. there is not much going on…
I hope I am wrong, but I doubt that.
I dont want to be THAT guy again. but there is actually a sim out there for stuff outside gt3s, with lots of people racing all around the clock. I wont say what sim because you probably know.
@@phippsa3 gt3 sucks because its lame
There's so much other cooler content in AMS2 that I'd rather drive/race than IMSA/WEC content.
there is indeed, but imsa is I think a (multi)player favorite
Very nice description of the changes. Ive been playing a lot of LMU so im curious how this feels. LMU is great, but its not perfect and i wish the FFB was a bit better and i do agree the low speed grip in LMU is a bit weird, cars feel really piggish at slow speeds.
@@murfenator82 what is weird that its rfactor2 but ffb is shitty
Let's hope this V1.6 update comes out before Christmas!
Very very good explanation of grip! I tried GT3s on 1.6 yesterday and still found a very annoying amount of constant autorotation cornering, no setup work did get rid of it. Basically I felt the front always has more grip than the rear. I would like to know your feeling about it, i ended giving up for this :-/
GT3 are shit in AMS... :/
Every channel is announcing this, but the updates not even out yet
yes that's why it's a preview :)
I always liked AMS2 for what it was. But I totally get why so many people were put off by it.
Ah, AMS2 glass tyres…still there after ALL those years and patches. Never change, Reiza. Never change! 🤣
F man this looks and sounds really good!
Discuss with Kunos integrating Popometer into Evo in the future. Will be a game changer.
You're gonna blow up in the next few months 💪 keep up the good work
Nice explanatory video, great job
i have a Moza 12nm setup and after some tuning in the current version of AM2, i love the way it look, FFB still lacking details so i’m really looking forward to this upcoming update.
A lot of the community talks about Assetto Corsa as the benchmark for FFB but i have had no luck getting it to behave the way i expect.
it is just really insistent between Kunos and community made cars and tracks.
Great video. I'm looking forward to what you think of AMS2 in total now (when 1.6 is out).
Im glad they let you preview the update and give your thoughts, nice vid!
I think you describe alot things nicely, but as old simracer i had to try by myself ;) bu seems nice and indid not tried ams2 about 3-5 month ago
you have access to 1.6? :) it's not public yet, only in beta
But there's maybe a video you can do. Since recently you drove some real cars, possibly even a Porsche Cup? If so why not a video where you share your considerations about real racing cars compared to sim racing? Thanks a lot.
Ams2 was my go 2 but I am concerned after watching the cars step out so easily. Watching someone means nothing. I need to feel it myself but thank you
I purposefully put the car on the spot where it would snap to show the change to previous patches. if you don't go there it won't happen. keep TC on, keep brake bias forward enough and don't go too aggressive with the aero, then you shouldn't encounter that
@SimracingPopometer Oh hey! Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate that
@frankzappa2274 this is a weird comment because before 1.6 they slid even more.
Later in the video I became worried because It was happening more not realizing you were still trying to show us the physics. Again never so happy to be wrong. I am really hoping this is great.
I sometimes wonder if a "real racing physics" video series would interest people.
Then I see comments and instantly know it would all be "pearls before swine"

Nice video. I actually thought 1.6 would be released already. As the time trials have been tdown for a couple of days. Anyway, I am sure it will be here over the weekend or early next week at the latest. I hope so, anyway.
Really nice explination of the updates and especially the tyres, it will be facinating to see the response of the wider community to V1.6, sooooo many great new features and updates!!! 😃🥳🙌
Also @SimracingPopometer what FFB are you running Default/Default+ or Custom?
default+
not entirely happy with it, but all I need to drive is there.
@SimRacersArms I'll eventually have to play around with custom profiles. but I hear it's a deep hole to sink time in

Coffee brewed, ready to watch!
I feel that would have a huge impact on how people perceive the game/sim
Ride heights also tend to be higher than necessary, especially on the rear. Notice this more on formula cars
I always felt there is a huge interaction between differential setting and the slip/grip curve of the tire. I think differentials are much easier to implement as its more of a hard fact, whereas tires still have a bit of grey area (hence all sims are different there). but once you have more longitudinal grip, you can drive more open diffs and still have traction on exit. and vice versa if you don't have longitudinal traction you will need more diff lock and that will influence the entire feeling indeed in every driving scenario.
this is where ACC has an advantage as the differentials in the GT3s can't be altered and remain locked in their ramp angles. the preload makes barely an impact on that. and thus when you make a change to the tire, you can test that in a kinda more laboratory with more control over side effects in the differential area.
haven't even finished watching this video and I'm excited to see it! Great choice by them to let you review the changes.
Is this the only video or is there a more in-depth review coming as well, featuring a more diverse set of cars? As it stands this only highlights 3 of them. However it was nonetheless very informative, and I think you did a great job previewing the mainly interesting improvements for online racing, so thanks for this!
This looks and feels like iRacing but with better graphics, and that's a really good thing
no, definitely not similar. still worlds apart in terms of grip peakiness and load sensitivity (without any judgement to it)
@@SimracingPopometer What I really want is to feel connected to the road, and not feel like there's a stick going through the middle of my car that it just spins on. It sounds like you're saying both of those things were accomplished in 1.6. @@sshoveitt we'll see. I'm not religious with sim loyalty and enjoy switching between them.
That would be really interesting as I hoped 1.6 would fix this behavior (sliding out of slow corner just by looking at the throttle).
interesting, will try it when it releases
Toll und das hud im Spiel ist gleich geblieben habe so sehr geholt die ändern das auch
Werden sie noch, aber nicht mit 1.6, sondern erst irgendwann später.

Hi Nils.
Wird in dem Update auch das UI überarbeitet oder kommt das später?
ja, ist auch dabei
Nvm, du hast es bei 4:00 erwähnt. Hatte nur die Kapitel gecheckt.
@@SimracingPopometer oh ok thank you for your explanation! I can't use forza or gt7 because I only have pc a d only using VR + full motion. I will try road cars! thanks!

The existing tracks have these micro cracks built in?
no. the way this likely works is just a "roughness" value of the surface. the game does not have this as actual 3D shape (no sim has).
it's all happening in terms of calculation and parameters representing real life phenomena
I hope someone can influence the ACE developers to influence them to have that in future 😏
all sims have that as part of their modeling as it's fundamental to how tires work.
they just don't speak about it as explicitly.
in the end all sims try to achieve realistic grip levels in all possible situations by considering as many influential factors as possible or as required to replicate the outcome

@@jps339 This comment looks like it's coming straight from the official Reiza forums. Chill out a bit. AMS2 is the most problematic "sim" of them all physics wise. Not only that but it is bloated with bugs all over. In the video I can clearly see that signature weightless cardboard box ams2 car behavior, which is way more fundamental and it stays way ahead in the physics model than cold tyres outlaps etc. They may fix some of the tyres aspects but a lot of other issues still remain.

Is there brake migration in the game now?
I don't think so, no. at least not visible or adjustable. I'd say it's a good thing to reduce that complexity. the braking is communicative enough to not require it
The brake by wire in 1.6 automatically adjusts brake bias when the ERS is harvesting so the higher brake torqe at the rear is compensated for with a shift to the fronts (determined by the brake bias setting for target) - but no system to manipulate handling for mid corner actively.
@@Darkeminence I see, so the rear brake torque is managed to maintain same targeted brake bias when ers is harvesting. A shame we don't have migration tho. I kinda imagine it wouldn't be difficult to be added in, tho what do i know.

That's unfortunate, but at least the car has tyre pressure stats on the steering wheel, so for example at 13:54 you see that the rear left goes from 1.9 bar to 2.0 bar right before the car spins out.
sorry, time constraints. I'm driving on ultra wide, it won't fit any 16:9 resolution. sadly all games have their widgets elsewhere.
it's not as bad as you make it to be.
it is a brilliant analysis on tyre model and physics.
Why the grip limit seems much further than it would appear driving like in any other sim?
did you ever drift in IRL?
Wo fängt gut an und wo hört schlecht auf 🤷

@SimracingPopometer 😉
I hope Reiza finally fix the horrendous tire physics that all theirs cars have and the lack of immersion in terms of in car speed, the feeling you have driving cars it seems you're going slow, never feels the speed.
