This is absolutely one of a few major lifestyle changes that I've been wanting to do for many, many months (since being vegan really)! I've done some bulk shopping recently, but I still haven't done it for many things that I ought to. The video helps a LOT, and it is an extra inspiration to get going with it!
My first step was becoming vegan for a year, and since I’ve surpassed that goal I’ve been trying to use less plastic! I’ve been recycling a ton and now I’ve moved on to reusing bags and buying bulk. At first I was just doing it to eliminate plastic, but very pleased to see how much less expensive it is!
This is awesome, I generally expect Whole Foods to be out of my budget, and have always bought my bulk goods at Sprouts when they have sales, but this is good to know! Some as just as comparable and a few were cheaper! Trader Joe's definitely has the best prices on raw nuts though. I would love to see you do a Sprouts or Winco bulk vs packaged next!
Yesterday was the first time I tried bulk shopping (unfortunately I used a plastic bag but I’m already buying the reusable kind) i was surprised at the oatmeal price! I always end up paying $3-$4 on a 1lb container. I didn’t see a price difference between almonds in wholefoods bulk and Trader Joe’s in plastic. I’ll stick to buying it in wholefoods since it uses less plastic overall.
We buy quite a bit in bulk and find bringing our glass jars labeled with tare, product number, and name makes it even easier. This way when you run out of something you can just put that jar in your shopping bag for your next trip. You also don't need to buy bags and it saves time from transferring from bags to jars once you get home. Most importantly though, you know exactly how much to get. The most annoying thing is getting home and finding the bag full of beans does not fit in your jar by like a 1/4 cup, and then you don't know what to do with them. Keep them in the bag? Another jar? :)
I'm so glad you did this video. Too many consumers just don't realize the cost difference. And it really isn't necessary. There is so much waste when not buying bulk esp. where I live, the recycling is very limited, sadly. If I do have to buy something prepackaged, I try to reuse the packaging if possible.
I've been buying a lot of my food from a bulk store for the last few months and I love it! I will say though that per kilo it's generally a little more expensive, but I think the food is of better quality and thoughtfully sourced.
This video was really helpful for me. I've tried shopping in bulk a few times but never have brought my own bags. (I just ordered the ones you linked on Amazon!) I also really like how you broke down the prices per lb with the packaged items. I don't take the time to do that at the store so sometimes I end up buying the prepackaged because it appears to cheaper to me at the time. Great video and I'm excited to get my bags and start doing more bulk shopping!
Thank you Michelle! What a great video! I've recently been shopping in bulk and have noticed a big savings in my bill. I also feel good about cutting down on unnecessary waste with the packaging. Today I bought some net produce bags that I plan on bringing with me from now on.
So informative!! I 😍 this video! I sometimes shop in bulk but always wondered if I was saving money. The items like the rice and grains I tend to find less expensive at Sprouts.
Thanks Michelle we really enjoyed your video and that helps. Unfortunately the stores around us don't have bought food but have to drive about an hour.
I'd be more curious to see the cost of bulk items at Wholefoods or other places I could get bulk foods compared to cheap stores like Trader Joe's or even Walmart because I think Wholefoods is expensive regardless so while the bulk food may be cheaper than the packaged goods there, is it really any cheaper than packaged goods elsewhere?
We have a bulk nation in our community and they weigh our mason jars so we don't even need to use our produce bags! It's great and the prices are even better than what you posted! Of course, I live in Florida and not California...
I learned long ago that the biggest savings that I took advantage of was on spices. We pay so much for the packaging and don't really know how fresh those prepackaged spices are. I keep my containers and refill from bulk when needed. Over the last decade I know I've saved a few hundred dollars.
My Whole Foods in L.A. stopped carrying nutritional yeast in bulk. Before they stopped it was about $10/pound and was the cheapest source that I found. On your video I think it says $6.99. This leaves me wondering, where is the best deal on nooch now? Anyone spot any good deals?
I am going to give bulk shopping a try. Nutritional yeast is expensive in the package. I "NEEDS" nutritional yeast in my life, CAN'T live without it, my world would go dark. Lol! Didn't know you could buy sugar in bulk?
Great video! I've shopped bulk stores before but I am fearful of them. Processing plants have very little human contact between the processing and the packaging. Yet here, people are walking around breathing and touching things that come into contact with the products. Case in point, the peanut butter hanging there exposed to the environment or until someone swipes it with their finger and puts it in their mouth?
?? question for other vegans I noticed If I eat Vegan non dairy Ice cream then the next morning I feel the mucus like I ate dairy not as gross but I can feel the heavy richness of the chocolate and cashew ice cream anyone else feel this way like its a processed food thing or rich food causes mucus thanks
My Whole Foods will not let me use my own reusable bags & only have the plastic ones next to the bulk...so when I go I always ask the cashier for their smallest paper bag & use those for the bulk bins. It drives me nuts when people use plastic bags for bulk!:(
I just started the video and I can’t continue until I say this: You are incredibly pretty, cute and just downright adorable. And this is coming from a straight female. You got some great genetics!
That's crazy! Did you talk to the store to see why? Could it be that the bulk items are organic / fair trade and the packaged items aren't? Or there just isn't enough demand for bulk where you are? I'd be very curious! I was very surprised to see some of the bulk items (like sugar and flour) were less expensive in their packaged forms.
World of Vegan they are organic but still more expensive than packaged organic from other stores. I think it’s just the store honestly. There is not a huge demand unfortunately
Have you tried shopping in bulk? I'd love to hear about your experience, and if you haven't, if you're going to give it a go!! -Michelle :)
World of Vegan this was interesting thanks for sharing

Thanks for the sweet comment! I'm adding Sprouts and Winco to my list! You're the second one to request a sprouts bulk vs packaged vid :) xoxo

Great tips!! Thank you! And TOTALLY, I've had many times where I buy too much, and they just stay in the bags and I use that up first :)
Can someone explain the tare. Do all grocery stores know how to weigh this in the jar?
Decreasing my waste footprint is definitely the next phase of my Vegan lifestyle journey. Thanks for this video and the recommendations!

I LOVE this. It helps the planet too. And less product waste at home.

Think I'll try bulk shopping for SOME things. Thanks!!
I would love to see a sprouts bulk vs packaged challenge. Thanks for the information! Very helpful!
I'll add it to my list!!
Awesome, never really thought about buying in bulk. Thx for that. I think I'll be using this method after shopping around.
Yippee, so happy to hear that!! Have fun! -Michelle :)

This changes the way I shop moving forward. Thank you so much for doing this VID!
Aww, yay, this makes me so happy!! Have fun with it!! :)
Great info! I've been contemplating buying bulk. Thanks!

depends sometimes whole foods is cheaper than even places like kroger when it comes to bulk
Great video. I buy my bulk supplies at Sprouts which beats Whole Foods in my part of San Diego.

Thank you for sharing. I love your channel. I am shopping in bulk next shopping trip.
Aww, thank you!!! Have fun!! xo, -Michelle

YES, great point! Perhaps I should do a video on spices specifically!!
Advice on refillable spice containers??

Wish our bulk bins and prices were similar
Can you and Toni please, please do a best store bought brand tahini taste test?
Very informative! Bulk buying is the way to go!
Excellent and very useful video! Thank you very much.
I really wish I had somewhere to shop in bulk in my area. :( This was a great video!
Thanks for opening my eyes!! I need to buy more in bulk👍🏼
Thanks for watching!! Excited for you to explore shopping in bulk more! -Michelle :)
That was great! Thank you so much. Shared to my Facebook as well!! 😊
Aww yay, thank you so much!!! -Michelle :)
Very eye opening. Thank you!
I love your channel! Do you usually buy your spices in bulk? If so, what is your storage situation for them?
I am going to give bulk shopping a try. Nutritional yeast is expensive in the package. I "NEEDS" nutritional yeast in my life, CAN'T live without it, my world would go dark. Lol! Didn't know you could buy sugar in bulk?

Costco is also good!!

i just use my reusables and note the PLU numbers in my phone, i don't ask first, i just do it.
I’m buying more bulk now!
Yay!! Cheers!!
you need to go to WINCO.
I just started the video and I can’t continue until I say this: You are incredibly pretty, cute and just downright adorable. And this is coming from a straight female. You got some great genetics!
Need a trusted gluten free bulk store. Tho WinCo did tell me I can just buy the bulk bagged items.
I have actually found it to be more expensive :( we only have 1 store to get beans, lentils etc in bulk. I don’t understand it
That's crazy! Did you talk to the store to see why? Could it be that the bulk items are organic / fair trade and the packaged items aren't? Or there just isn't enough demand for bulk where you are?
