In this video I show you how to paint an urban park scene that is inspired by the Cathedral Green in the city of Exeter in Devon, England.
Recently I have been inspired by the art works of Trevor Chamberlain who is a British artist that painted landscapes, seascapes and buildings especially scenes of English towns.
The painting in this video features the Cathedral Green and one of the towers of Exeter Cathedral which is the main part of the composition.
Throughout the video I give you tips on painting buildings, trees, grass and creating an engaging composition.

Ah Sam, that is beautiful! It’s so good to see you turning your hand to something different…please treat us to a few more buildings/structures/etc.
Thank you! Will do! 😀
Hi Sam I recognised the cathedral as soon as I saw the thumbnail having lived in Exeter all my life, as a young lad just across the road from it
Thats so awesome. I grew up in Exeter myself. I live in New Zealand at present 😀
Beautiful work Sam thanks
Many thanks 😀
Andrew’s videos sent me here 👋 subscribed 👍🏼
Thank you so much Steph. Andrew and I have been friends for years, he actually mentored me in 2015 / 2016. Welcome aboard 😀
Absolutely love it!!!
Thank you :)
Excellent job!
Thank you very much 😀
That last pass on the building, warmer color in the same value is an excellent effect. Shows how important color temperature can be to adding dimension
Absolutely Jeff. Thanks for watching 😀
This might be my favorite one you’ve ever done! Looking forward to new paintings with buildings!
Thank you so much, more paintings of buildings to come :)
Hey, I really enjoyed your painting video
Thank you so much 😀
tres tres belle peinture
Thank you 😀
Love the architecture with landscapes. Am excited !
Awesomeness. I like this too. Thanks for watching 😀
Excellent video Sam. I especially like how you changed the composition to alter the vectors eliminating the road and wall and zig zagging the walk to draw in the viewer. You also remove the building in the distance to focus the attention on the subject
Thank you so much Jeff 😀
Hi Sam, great painting and an insightful video as always.
I've just finished a large painting featuring a courthouse for a local business and it was quite a technical challenge. It was interesting to see how you approached painting an ornate piece of architecture, and wow Trevor Chamberlain's work is incredible. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge, and also for drawing attention to the art heroes who have inspired you.
Thank you so much Cameron, yeah Trevor Chamberlain is an amazing artist 😀
Lovely, thank you for sharing ^^
My pleasure, thanks for watching 😊
Nice video Sam I'm just starting my oil painting journey again, so you ever paint a small landscape say 6x4 what tips for painting small?
Hey Alan, so awesome you have taken up painting and yes I often paint small art works even 6" x 4" paintings. My tips for painting small art works or indeed any paintings is paint your dark values and shadows first and try and use the biggest brushes you can get away with so your painting has a nice 'painterly' quality to it.
I hope this help. If you would like to learn more about painting landscapes check out my painting blog which has loads of free written tutorials on there and there is my Patreon channel where I have full length, in-depth painting tutorial videos.

Nice painting Sam ... What do you suggest about interesting brush work or mark making ... :)
Thanks Terry. Brush marks can really make a painting, I try and use the biggest brushes I can get away with so my art works look more 'painterly' 😀
@@SamuelEarpArtist Cheers Sam :)
Thanks Sam. Always helpful. I would love to see some more gouache for plein aire. I’m not sure much realism is possible or if gouache is more for Impressionism. .
Thanks Lonny and thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely be making some videos on painting with gouache...stay tuned 😀
Do you just visit the West Country Sam ? When you come over to England ,,, I live close to constable country Dedham and flatford , if your over this way give us a shout I will take you down there and we can paint out 👍👍
Sounds great. I live in New Zealand at the moment but I am hoping to visit the UK sometime in the next few years, my brother lives in Exeter. Definitely keen to go painting next time I visit 😀
Well I know Exeter is a way from me but it would be great if you could get over and paint here along the stour ,, it’s such an iconic part of the English landscape ,, also nearby we have the new Gainsborough museum opening up and the Munnings home open for viewing , there is so much to see and enjoy here
Beautiful work. How do we show rain and storm in landscape painting ? Is it possible
Joseph Mallord William Turner
@@KUSAK100 thanks
Yes, definitely. There are lots of way you can paint rain and heavy clouds, I'll try and make a video on this in the future 😀
@@SamuelEarpArtist ok thank you so much for such a fruitful reply. I will be waiting for that.
The tower is leaning to the right?
I'm thinking that's the camera angle - checkout the right side of the board also
There are alot of crooked old buildings in England so it could actually be leaning lol
Yep it’s a little crooked on top
It's the leaning tower of Exeter 😂
@@SamuelEarpArtist Symmetry and perspective are just as important in painting. Just my opinion.
It pains me to say I have to give up my patreon pledge for a bit. I am buying a new house so every little bit counts. At least I get a new studio out of the deal. Will be back in a few months
Hey, no worries I completely understand. I hope everything goes well with your new house and feel free to come back to Patreon anytime 😀
