In theory yes, but unfortunately for most artists, their unhappiness is what drives their art, sort of like an escape mechanism. That's why a lot of modern art is dark and angry, unlike Sam's
I started watching this for the color mixing. I didn't realize I would also be getting a very coherent summary of the stages of a painting, the subject of values, the way to achieve the illusion of trees, the proper color of mountains, clouds, the lower sky, the upper sky, how to convey shadows, the simplicity of painting, the basics of atmosphere, and much more. I had already watched you paint the first painting, and was so impressed by how your painting put the distant mountains in appealing shadow (when your reference photo did not). This second painting was even more amazing to watch! Thank you so much. You really are a master teacher, and watching this was time very well spent. I can see myself referring back to this video time and again. Superb!!
Hi Sam,can you please describe the colour mixing techniques a bit slowly..like the sky ,the mountains..the right mixing with normal colours.loved your work..you are such a blessed artist..hats off to your work..
Great suggestion Geena. My UA-cam videos are generally short however if you subscribe to my Patreon channel I have much longer in-depth videos where I show the whole process. I also have videos available from my website 😀
Always learn something when I tune in to your videos Sam, I must admit I am one of those painters who doesn’t have a rigid process of setting in all the shadows throughout the Landscape first, I think I can benefit from this technique as I find myself re-painting sections in the detail stage because I haven’t added in all the shadows earlier. Thanks again mate for another great tutorial, no matter what stage your at you can always learn something from watching you paint. It was also kind of cool to pick the difference between the two, I couldn’t tell until you spilled the beans.😁👍
I've ben watching your videos 2 days now and learned alot.yes, the both paintings are identical wow.I was looking for a video to teach the colors last night and today exactly this video helped me alot ty,I sub
Eve -Thank you Samuel, loved the landscape/colour wheel. I will be off line Oct. 10 to NOv. 30th I'll miss you but please keep sending me your painting tricks. I am learning so much from you I appreciate your style. Eve Oakville Ontario Canada.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.. I just can thank you.. I really want to learn landscape painting, and I find you on Pintrest,.. and now here ❤️😍👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I never been interested in paintings until during this pandemic, that I started recycling empty wine bottle into art that I watch in youtube, this type of craft needed painting to color the clays so I kind of search how to mix colours, that brings me to your youtube, thank you for sharing your knowledge for free I know I have a very long way to go but now I tried my very first painting, and yes I have so many questions but I don't know where to start🙂, once again love your video and all your stunning works

Nice. I like the colour mixing pallete you achieved. The older painting appears to contain more yellow in the grass foreground, but I wouldn't say that either was better than the other. 👍🎨
Thank you, I usually struggle with green color, it depends on many things, prospective, type of trees, day times! I use limited pallet because I have more control. The trickiest things about color are they appear different depending on what color is next to them! It would be nice to have video on color relativity. Thank you.
Hello, yes, green can be a tricky colour and one people can struggle with. I find I have more control over my colours by using a more limited palette. I'll certainly keep in mind your video suggestion 😀
Amazing videos! I can't explain just how much your videos and blog tutorials have made me understand landscape painting. Looking forward to your future video
Really excellent content...and the side by side comparison was very revealing. A limited palette has definite advantages. Thanks so much for this video.
Truly helpful, thank you Sam! My foreground colors always looked similar to the background colors which just looked weird. Thanks to your latest post I can now desaturate in a more controlled manner. Kindest regards
Thanks Rusty, yeah I used to have trouble with my greens looking the same in the background as they did in the foreground as well, then I had a friend explain to me how to desaturate colour. It clicked and made sense 😀
Thanks Janos, sorry it took a while. More videos to come soon. Let me know if there if there is a painting subject you would like me to make a future video on 🙂
Thanks for sharing this Sam. It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. I always have too many tubes of premixed when I paint but you've convinced me to try this limited pallet approach. Cheers
Thanks Stephen, yeah I found colour mixing much easier when I started using less colours. I found I was able to mix some of the tubed colours I was using anyway 😀
Thank you for breaking down color theory into something very easy to understand. It really made sense!Very interested in the near future of getting into painting and really like the idea of limiting the colors to the basic primaries to learn color mixing. Your two paintings were very close. The original seemed just a little more imbued with light. Both good! Would be interested in a future video of the most essential supplies for beginners in oils.
Thanks Faith, I'm glad you found the video useful, I wish someone could have explained some basic colour and value principles with me from the start, it would have been son helpful. You may be right about the original painting, I think the light in my studio was distorting the colours and little. 😀
This was very helpful! I have learned so much from you about mixing greens, as well as using a limited pallet. I'm currently working on a landscape in which I have also incorporated your style of blocking in and I'm amazed at how much all of your videos have improved my work! Thank you for your time & sharing your experience with us!
Very inspiring and instructional. You have an upbeat approach with a lot of good information. Love looking at the two paintings. I find greens very hard and your explanation is very helpful. Rocks are another topic that I would like some help. Thanks!!
Fabulous!! Thank you! How does one use paint to display the translucent type effect of sunlight passing thru green leaves in such a way to make them look almost see thru? Is there special translucent paint to give the effect of light behind the object being painted? Thank you so much for your generous tutorials 😀 slowly, i learn...covid seclusion, having been the catalyst for this ole timer ☺🐦🎵🎶🐱
Hi, in answer to your question regarding the comparison of your two paintings. The original one has a little more warmth in the foreground greens, and I’m sure you could have rectified this by adding a little more red. Other than that, both pictures are brilliant, thanks for sharing 👍😊
Hello Samuel very educational, sincere video as always. I am a lawyer inTurkey and an admirer of your work ı just wondered in the event of a travel to new zeland would it be possible to meet and take your signature on a shirth or something?
@@SamuelEarpArtist No I have not so far, though there are quite a few places in İstanbul I would like to try. Unfortunately as an intern I have limited time to paint but you are for sure an inspiration for me.
Hi! Samuel. I am interest in your great painting. I am Korean painting worker. I have a question .when you paint at this video, are you paint without dry time ?? Or have you dry time ?? If so , how many time for layer dry??? I paint when i am not dry. Have an experience of blurring colors. So I wonder if you paints after taking time to dry.
Thanks for sharing. Knowing your talent I believe you could have created more similarity and between the original painting and the one you just did with limited palette. the original one is a little more chromatic.
Are you from England, where do you live? I am from England myself, I miss my family and sometimes I miss England. I don't like the cold weather which is why we live in northern New Zealand as it's bordering on the subtropics, but even here it gets chilly in winter. 😊
Hello, I can see that on the video the violet does appear a little brown and I apologise for that. The reason being is that my home made colour wheel was mixed from three primary colours and when I mixed blue and red to make violet the colour dropped out a bit. I did actually think about this at the time and considered using a premixed violet. I could have used dioxazine violet but the value is very dark. I also have manganese violet which I could have gotten away with, but there was a risk I would have to add white to it so in the end I decided to stick with the home made violet mixed from red and blue. Whilst I agree it could look better I hope it doesn’t detract too much from the information on colour theory I was trying to provide. Thank you for your feedback, it’s appreciated so I can make the next videos even better 😊

Hello, glad you enjoyed the video. This painting was done over several sessions and I had to wait for each layer to dry. I think there might be about three to four layers in this painting. 😊
