Hi Sam! It’s been a great couple of days outside here in Wyoming, USA. Completed my very first 2 oil paintings in plein air! A lot of fun and great friends/instructors, learned so much! I will have to share the paintings on Instagram with you and your followers, and hopefully get some more tips and inspiration from everyone. Thank you so much for all the confidence inspiring videos! I had never painted in oils until yesterday… your videos definitely helped!
Awesome work as always.. it's artists like you who inspires many people to start learning Plein Air Painting and explore the Joy of Creating... Keep creating , keep inspiring 🤠
This was very helpful. Especially appreciate the info on how you arrived at different colors. Also loved the handling of the clouds. I was wondering if the foreground (which is in shadow from something off to the right blocking the sun?) is perhaps too dark in value? With the blue of the sky being the second light source I am imagining the value to be one step cooler and lighter without competing with the background of course. Beautiful painting and love how you executed it as if en plein air.
Thank you so much. This area is surrounded by high mountains and it was evening when I took the photos I used. It is very likely the foreground was in shadow from a mountain 😊
Thank you. I found that when I was painting on a toned surface that I was often getting a bit lost in my dark values and then was having to make adjustments. I have found since painting on a white surface my colours look cleaner and that my values look better. It's all a matter of preference, try painting on both, a white canvas and a toned canvas and see what results you get 😊

Gorgeous! Why don’t you tone your canvas now?
Thank you. I found that when I was painting on a toned surface that I was often getting a bit lost in my dark values and then was having to make adjustments. Can you recommend a decent tripod for my 9x12 pochade box. Most mounts are wobbly for my box. Thanks
I use a Manfrotto tripod for my pochade box, they are great quality and they definitely handle my pochade boxes 😊
Curious to what type of bristle your flat brush is? Ultimate bristle? Ivory ?
I use the Classic bristle brushes 😊
I played it a couple of times but didn't catch that thing with the elephant in the room and the boat race...lol - Love the painting!
Thanks Norm. Boat race is Cockney rhyming slang for face. I caught the sun on my face and I looked a bit burnt 😂
