The monkey character is from Hinduism, it’s Hanuman, who is a god of strength and courage (among other things). His myth and the Sun Wukong myth might have originated from the same idea, but Hanuman is more appropriate for the Indian setting 🙂
@itoo4884 - well not only that, the whole premise of Journey to the West is an allegory from Buddhism being brought from Ancient China to Ancient India, so the idea that both cultures would have a significant mythic monkey is a no-brainer.
@@radicaladz It's the other way round. Buddhism started in India and spread to China, along with a lot of divine entities. Sun Wukong was one, Guanyin was another that originated from Avalokitesvara
The movie was finished years ago but Netflix shelved it I believe. Then Peele insisted that this movie deserves to be seen in the theatres and pushed for a theatre release and thats how he's become the producer.
Netflix didnt shelve it they were going to release on the platform but then Peele watched it and thought it deserved a big theatrical release so his company bought it from netflix.
@@kitsomno The film was done 3 years ago. Keeping a film unreleased for 3 years is whats generally called as shelfing it. They were not going to release it lmao, it was a political reason from the sounds of it.
The director Dev Patel (also the star) has been trained in martial arts for YEARS, and had been trying and trying to be a lead in a big action role. When nothing popped up, he said fuck it, I’ll do it myself and made it himself. On top of the whole Netflix angle, this jumped to my most anticipated of this year
@cheezusfries3.010 he and the guys have talked about it on stream before. Rick suffers from debilatating levels of depression and anxiety, and he needed a break from reactions to get in a safer head space.
PLEASEEE put some respect on Dev. Hes so much more than "Prince Zuko" lmfao. Slumdog, Chappie, The Green Knight, Lion w Nicole Kidman. And not only is he acting, and writing, but this bad ass action film is going to be his directorial debut! Dev has combat training he wanted to show off for years now, but Hollywood dont wanna let a brown man lead a film like this, so he said "fuck it ill write the damn thing myself ANDD cast my self as the fuckin' lead". Peele saw the film and said "this NEEDS to be seen by audiences" and co signed tf out of it and gave it the buzz it deserves.
Dev Patel finished making this movie in 2021 and Netflix bought the distribution rights. Jordan Peele saw the film and somehow got the rights to it. Now it's coming to theaters.
Dev Patel is mostly known for dramatic roles like Slumdog Millionaire and Lion, and while I doubt he won't be acting his ass off like he usually does, it seems he was itching for an excuse to use that Tae Kwon Do black belt of his. Said alright, if you won't give me an action movie, I'll make me an action movie. Jordan Peele had nothing to do with the making of the movie, but he saw it was going to go straight to streaming like so many amazing movies do these days and decided it needed better. So he bought it for about 30 mill from Netflix so it could actually get a theatrical release, which it looks like it deserves. The Hanuman myth is older than Son Wukong but they're related, like much of Chinese culture from Zen Buddhism to Gung-Fu, Journey to the West has its roots in India.
think twice before refrencing anything about Indian culture as myth no it is not we believe it is our history and have proofs but your harvard folks are too woke to understand view point of others.
By the way, this film was shot in Indonesia. And involves almost 90% of the Indonesian crew. And also collaborated with one of the renowned studios in Indonesia.
Dev Patel is British. Regardless, around 10% of the Indian population speaks English, that might not seem like a lot, but it's around 130 million people, so especially when it comes to films aimed to be international it is not at all surprising it would be in English. I feel like you are either forgetting or are blissfully unaware of the massive British colonization of the subcontinent
Fun fact: the song heard predominantly in the trailer is Panjabi MC's 'Mundian To Bach Ke' (or, specifically, the Jay Z-featuring version 'Beware'), uses drum and bassline from Busta Rhymes' Fire It Up, (which is in turn based on the theme from Knight Rider,) is one of the most well known pieces of bhangra music outside of India and the subcontinent, and was recorded in, survey says... Birmingham, UK, my hometown and home to the third largest population of Indians in Britain. Which doesn't sound like much, but when you're also second largest city and the biggest is London, you take what you get really. 😋
Lol seems like the crew doesn't realize who Dev Patel is. They note that its being directed by Dev Patel with no real reaction, and then moments later Eric goes "Prince Zuko!" when he finally recognizes Patel's face in the lead role haha. I guess not everybody has been following his career as closely as I have. The Green Knight is awesome.
I don't think you need to be following his career closely to know who he is, most regular movie goers should know. Unfortunately the guys seem to be in the "Nerd Bubble" when it comes to media so they haven't watched the likes of Slumdog Millionaire or Lion.
Not every action movie is John Wick, my dudes. This reminds me of the grand tales of revenge from 90s South India. The heroes endure hell due to powerful corrupt, but seek revenge for their loved ones after training. There may or may not be divine bleasings involved, but whatever blessing they get is not noticeable. Here it seems Lord Hanuman may be the patron. I think we have a resurgence of those tales recently, the latest was a Kannada film called Toby. But Toby is closer to John Wick.

It's actually alluding to Hanuman, the Indian monkey deity from Hinduism. He's actually older than Son Wukong from Journey to the West. There are many similarities since both are from the same continent which is common for mythologies.
