Yeah it's a great addition to the "underrated Halloween season movies" list. I love that film. Super creepy, makes you think, and a good Carpenter score.
Prince of Datkness creeped me out for some reason. Most of the movie was so so, but the end, when it is revealed that it is the chick under the hood left too many questions unanswered.
The only real problem the remake had was how the remakes male lead was a complete charisma vacuum compared to Steve McQueen, but since the film had literally *EVERYTHING* *ELSE* going for it in terms of special effects and casting, I really don't understand why it hasn't received the major cult status of other overlooked 80's horror films.

Prince of Darkness is one of the best horror movies ever made. It has some of the most original ideas of God and Satan that has ever been put to film. It's also one of the most bleakest and original endings that I can think of.

Prince of Darkness is definitely an underrated Carpenter film. The tachyon transmissions from the future to the dreams of the characters in the movie are great. This movie was part of Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy... along with The Thing and In the Mouth of Madness. Love them all.
I think John Carpenter's "Christine" is a really underrated Horror film. If it wasn't for that movie,I am pretty sure nobody would even remember the 1958 Plymouth Fury car.
Clive Barker's Nightbreed is a great horror movie I never see talked about. Hellraiser generally has more of an audience, but Nightbreed had a great story of the outcasts who just want peace versus the "normal" people who are the real monsters, a creepy villain, and likable characters.
1989's Phantom of the Opera with Robert Englund is much better than I think people give it credit for. Or at least that's what I thought when I watched it a couple years ago.
I think the fact that the film was left in the shadows is due to the fact that during that time, Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical became extremely popular and nobody wanted to see the original monster.
Speaking of underrated horror films, given all the other John Carpenter films James has talked about over the years I’m really surprised in the 10 years he’s been doing Monster Madness he’s never talked about ‘John Carpenter’s The Fog’. It has a great cast, has a really creepy atmosphere & soundtrack, & is probably one of the more fondly remembered films in Carpenter’s body of work. Maybe in the future he’ll touch upon it, I’d love to hear his thoughts on The Fog.
My dad told me about seeing this movie at a drive in theater in 1976 where a guy dressed as the killer was hired to stalk the audience and act creepy....the story of that alone scared the shit out of me to the point I've never watched it
This is my resting face I just watched it again and really dug its vibe, very unique. Lance is great and I really felt his loss when his boy died. Being a father myself made that part of the movie have more impact than the last time I watched it.

Holy Shit Tony! I could never remember anything else about Prince of Darkness, other than that VHS part. I only saw the back half of the movie on tv about a decade ago and always wondered what it was. I know what I'm watching this weekend.
Does Transylvania 6-5000 officially count tho??? It's a "Horror-Comedy". Do those count as under-rated horror-movies??? I thought only serious horror-movies were being "counted" here... Either way,I agree; it's an under-rated movie & I like it,as well... :)
Do U mean the net-flix series "Night Flyer"??? If so,then I agree it's WAY under-rated... The fact the 2nd season got canceled shows just how under-appreciated it was... Altho, not surprising that modern audiences didn't like it(too complex/confusing for them)... Anyway,I could rant on about it's cancellation, but will spare ever1... ;)
off the top of my head... drag me to hell, let the right one in, the whole subspecies movie series and the puppet master series. also rare exports, the silent night deadly night series and the dead snow trilogy. the most underrated horror movies i can think about.
Ravenous- really underrated horror movie. it starts out as almost a dark comedy, but it quickly turns into essentially a slasher film. The score is prob one of the unique soundtracks ive ever heard. Also the cast is fantastic.
Yeah, that one's good. And it's sort of based on the Donner party as well, so that lends it a lot more credibility. I always stock up on food before watching that one.
I would have to pick the "Feast" trilogy as the most under rated horror movies . .. I had never heard of them , and rarely hear of them ... and they blew me away ..such fun movies .
I love the Mario Bros movie and I love the fact that it is a Mario movie. The way you have to go into it is with a mindset that the events of the movie are the adventures of the REAL "Super" Mario Brothers and the games are suppose to be "kid-friendly-video-gamified" adaptions of those events. Like the Mario bros decided to go on TV to talk about everything that happened, became super-stars and then a young Miyamoto really liked the story and decided to make a video game series based on it.
Man, I heard that "This is not a dream" thing from Prince of Darkness back when I listened to DJ Shadow's Endtroducing... and didn't realize it was from a movie.
@@n0m4nic Yeah, the movie's development problems are to blame. The development history is kind of interesting. Check out Oliver Harper's Retrospective on it if you're curious.
Right on with prince of darkness...the music is great and this has the same feel as"the thing"...closest movie vibes to " the thing" I've seen since I was a kid
There are some earlier films by Dario Argento like The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Deep Red and Tenebrae that are very underrated. But not many know about these films because either they were unavailable here in the states or shown only in a limited run.
I saw Deep Red thanks to a DVD box-set of "Horror Classics"... So,it would be possible for ppl who buy cheap horror movie sets! xD Anyway,"Deep Red" is an AMAZING early "slasher" with detective/thriller/suspense elements mixed-in. And,it's "dark" locations(literally, given the natural lighting,in most cases) give it a really somber/lonely feel. Which, makes it a GREAT "atmospheric" movie,as well... VERY good movie! :)
I dunno, Jacob's Ladder is among my favorite films of all time but "underrated"? It's constantly popping up on greatest horror film lists and so on, it didn't get the attention it deserved at the time, but it's really become a massive classic...
The Descent is honestly one of the most terrifying movies I've ever seen. I'm claustrophobic as fuck, and the scenes of them cave diving down, their bodies just squeezing and scraping against the tight spaces...it just kills me. I have to get up and walk around during those scenes. Then the monsters come...fuck. excellent movie.
British critics tend to rate it as one the best horrors of all time. Mark Gattis in his History of Horror series placed it as the figurehead of what he called 'folk horror' (Scarfolk is a great modern example of it)
@@tae523 James himself says in the video that, even If critics like it but not many people see it or know about it, it can be called underrated, so my definition is correct

Ranevous (1999). Does anybody have seen this movie? This is one of my favorite movies. I saw this very young and in some strange way it always brings nostalgia and happiness to me. So underrated. Great cast, great plot, great filming location and beautiful music. Movie is about cannibalism and Wendigo myth.
The thing about the Phantasm series, is the plot is flipped on it's side by the last film making it not what you originally think it's about. But I'd agree that Phantasm II was the best film of the series.
Night of the Demons got 2 scream factory releases, Trick or Treat just got one, Cabin in the Woods made millions, Tucker and Dale is very popular, Evil Dead rebbot was very hyped.
THE KEEP (1983)!!; directed by Michael Mann and have an all-star cast (Scott Glenn, Jürgen Prochnow, Ian McKellen and Gabriel Byrne), but was butchered during it's post-production, still a very entertaining film.
I've been trying to get hold of The Keep for years. The problem I'm having is I want it on VHS. Not easy to find unless I'm willing to spend a small fortune.
I agree with Justin on Doom. I love that movie. My favorite underrated horror(ish) movie is Saturday the 14th. Absolutely phenomenal horror comedy that I'd love to see a Rental Review on.
Completely underrated and feels more like The Thing, in terms of presentation. Carpenter is the master of independent horror cinema; a close second to Romero.
"They're making a new Doom movie, not related to this" "Does it have the Rock?" Yes, they are making a new Doom movie with the Rock not related to the previous one with the Rock. lol, I can't believe he asked that.
@@shrews12001 The 2nd DOOM movie was originally supposed to have THE ROCK in it?!?!?! Wow,wonder if it would've been better w/ him... I imagine it originally had a MUCH higher budget when that was still in the works... It wasn't awful,IMO. However,I'm apparently VERY forgiving of "bad" things & tend to find worth in something much easier than most... "Better than nothing" tends to be my motto/philosphy...
My Recommendations: The Host (2006) - A Dad tries to save his daughter from a Giant Amphibious Monster in South Korea. Cloverfield - Found Footage with a Giant Monster, may not be everyone’s favorite but I like it. Trollhunter - A Norwegian Faux Documentary follows a man hunting trolls & government cover ups. Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island - Your typical mystery episode except this time the monsters are real with a very good twist. Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust - A Dhampir bounty hunter and another competition races to retrieve a wealthy young woman from an vampire in this stylish gothic anime. Blood The Last Vampire (anime) - With the help of a mysterious government organization a katana-wielding Girl hunts bloodthirsty demons called Chiropterans on an air base in 1966. Coraline - a 3D stop-motion film about a recently moved girl enters an parallel dimension where everything, including her home, parents & neighbors is perfect...or is it? Tarantula - A science experiment accidentally made a spider grow big and goes on a rampage. Fun Fact Clint Eastwood appears in an uncredited role.
Two underrated gems In my humble opinion (which are polar opposites of each other): The Ninth Gate and The Devil’s Rejects. The Ninth Gate wasn’t terribly scary, but had a building bizarre, unsettling vibe that grew to the climactic ending. The Devil’s Rejects wasn’t as absurdly gory as House of 1,000 Corpses, but still had lots of shocks while maintaining a kind of Tarantino-like anti-hero subtext to the Firefly clan.
The 9th Gate is hardly ever mentioned & seems to count as "under-rated",from what I can see here... I don't think anyone can count any of the "House of 1000" movies as "under-rated" really... The 1 U mentioned is actually his HIGHEST-RATED movie of ALL that he's done,so far(almost 7-out-of-10)... However,if you're naming 1,I'll mention my FAV of his "lesser-known/under-appreciated" 2. That is,both "31" AND "The Lords of Salem" are equally under-rated(and NOT part of any well-known series of his)... However,I prefer the cerebral to the physical,in this case... Meaning,I liked "The Lords of Salem",more than "31". Altho,I enjoyed both movies,I think the overall "creepiness" & "atmospheric/haunting" horror of "TLoS" is more interesting & it has a better story/setting,overall... Not sure it counts as "Under-rated" except in the LITERAL sense tho(it's only got a score of 5-out-of-10,apparently)...
Frizzurd lies. Tremors 2 is great. 3 and 4 aren't good movies but they still aren't as near as bad as they could've been, or as near as bad as other horror sequels often get.
I love how long it took Mike to finally realize, that "Doom" really was Justin's pick and not another joke. xD

I was just pointing out ones that have gotten major media attention
I think near dark is underated really good vampire movie with like half the cast of aliens
The Gate
The Unknown Psycho even more underrated is Gate 2.
I have the gate and I never seen gate 2.
The Fly II is very underrated! It's a horror cult classic!
Terror Vision.
Transylvania 6-5000
The Night Flyer
The Night Flyer was just amazing. Trully deserve a place in the underated list.
Transylvania 6-5000!! Yes!!
Terror Vision!! Forgot about that one! lol Loved it
Does Transylvania 6-5000 officially count tho??? It's a "Horror-Comedy". Do those count as under-rated horror-movies???
I thought only serious horror-movies were being "counted" here...
Either way,I agree; it's an under-rated movie & I like it,as well... :)
Do U mean the net-flix series "Night Flyer"???
If so,then I agree it's WAY under-rated...
The fact the 2nd season got canceled shows just how under-appreciated it was...
Altho, not surprising that modern audiences didn't like it(too complex/confusing for them)...
Anyway,I could rant on about it's cancellation,but will spare ever1... ;)
off the top of my head... drag me to hell, let the right one in, the whole subspecies movie series and the puppet master series. also rare exports, the silent night deadly night series and the dead snow trilogy. the most underrated horror movies i can think about.
Ravenous- really underrated horror movie. it starts out as almost a dark comedy, but it quickly turns into essentially a slasher film. The score is prob one of the unique soundtracks ive ever heard. Also the cast is fantastic.
Yes! Weird vibes in a good way
Yeah, that one's good. And it's sort of based on the Donner party as well, so that lends it a lot more credibility. I always stock up on food before watching that one.
Good call!
Excellent movie.
Kinda shocked you all haven't seen Prince of Darkness! One of his best(at least from the 80s).
I would have to pick the "Feast" trilogy as the most under rated horror movies . .. I had never heard of them , and rarely hear of them ... and they blew me away ..such fun movies .
That trilogy was good.
Blood Feast!
"In the Mouth of Madness"
"Dog Soldiers"
"Requiem for a Dream"
ಠ_ಠ
(PS: I like Doom too XD)
Session 9 is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. I don’t think it ever got the credit it deserves.
Agreed 100%, this is the ultimate under-rated horror movie.
"I live within the weak and in the wounded" chills
always loved prince of Darkness
And yeah, the carpenter soundtracks rule many times
"Prince of Darkness" is AWESOME.
I haven't watched the video yet, but I'd say _LIFEFORCE_ (1985) should be on the list.
I watched it just last week, it was alright but it felt like there were large swaths of it missing.
Yeah Lifeforce is great , but yeah underrated.
@@n0m4nic Yeah, the movie's development problems are to blame. The development history is kind of interesting. Check out Oliver Harper's Retrospective on it if you're curious.
Who's ever seen 1973's Legend of Hell House?
Eh See yes ! Love that movie !!! I used to rent that movie all the time.
My dad showed it to me a few years ago, I thought it was pretty good.
“Leave a sample in the jar please.”
Fuck yeah.
THIS. Scared the shit out of me and my friend years ago. We always said it was the scariest movie we'd ever seen.
Dario Argentos 1980 spiritual sequel to Suspiria...INFERNO
Profundo Rosso is better. That's Deep Red to you.
Omfg a masterpiece!
Deep red?
@@UltimateNinja-fe6yh I already mentioned Deep Red yesterday. Pay attention, bitch.
@@PotatoeSnow Yeah that's very true, I didn't even know about nor see Inferno until years after I saw Suspiria back in '04
The Vault staring James Franco is highly underrated, but the twist is really great and the movie overall is, in my opinion a master piece
So,it would be possible for ppl who buy cheap horror movie sets! xD
Anyway,"Deep Red" is an AMAZING early "slasher" with detective/thriller/suspense elements mixed-in. And,it's "dark" locations(literally, given the natural lighting,in most cases) give it a really somber/lonely feel. Which, makes it a GREAT "atmospheric" movie,as well...
VERY good movie! :)
I wish I had a group of friends like you guys
Outlaw GT it would be sad if you were a teen but it takes a while new league of sadness to know that you are a 40 year old man who collects guns
Not really sure about these films being under-rated, but Coraline and Monster House are heavily over-looked gems to me.
Coraline is a good call. I never see it on any lists but its a Creepy Masterpiece.
Paranornan ?
Horror Express (1972) with Christopher Lloyd and Peter Cushing.
I love how the video store was decorated for Halloween. Reminds me of how we used to decorate my house when I was a kid
Day of the Dead, Season of the Witch, Creepshow, or Trick R’ Treat
3/4 of those wouldn't be considered underrated at all.
Halloween 3 (the monologue is my fave, second only to Quint from Jaws. Bone chilling!!!)
Would have been interesting if they would have followed through with the plan for the Halloween movies to be an anthology series
yea i like halloween 3 i say it would fall in under rated catogory cause ppl didnt like it cause michael myers was not in it lol
Night of the demons, Martyrs, and Jacob's Ladder are underrated.
Martyrs is so fucking good
Yeh, Jackob's Ladder was good one!
Night of the Demons is one of my faves.
I dunno, Jacob's Ladder is among my favorite films of all time but "underrated"? It's constantly popping up on greatest horror film lists and so on, it didn't get the attention it deserved at the time, but it's really become a massive classic...
@@jonnisko And then he tears a guys intestines out and flails them about. Yeah, that Night of The Demon is the greatest film of all-time.
The Descent is my favorite horror film honestly, I consider it underrated. I think it's incredible.
Yea thats a good one
Just avoid the sequel.
Good pick. I actually expected it to be a trash bargain bin movie but I really enjoyed it as well
I agree
The Descent is honestly one of the most terrifying movies I've ever seen. I'm claustrophobic as fuck, and the scenes of them cave diving down, their bodies just squeezing and scraping against the tight spaces...it just kills me. I have to get up and walk around during those scenes. Then the monsters come...fuck. excellent movie.
Love that you guys have The Real Ghostbusters on in the background. I loved (and still do) that show growing up. Very lucky to be an 80's kid!
"The Haunting" from 1963. Though it's status as "underrated" is literally an ongoing debate.
How about pontypool. Babysitter? It's a fun one.
The Wicker Man from 1973, I never see anyone talking about it, even if I consider it more of a suspense
British critics tend to rate it as one the best horrors of all time. Mark Gattis in his History of Horror series placed it as the figurehead of what he called 'folk horror' (Scarfolk is a great modern example of it)
@@RatzaChewy yeah, but besides critics almost no one knows about it
I think you need to look up the definition of underrated
@@tae523 James himself says in the video that, even If critics like it but not many people see it or know about it, it can be called underrated, so my definition is correct
Everyone knows the wicker man what are you talking about
The tunnel , grave encounters and room 1408 are underrated .All the best horror movies of the 80/90 are underrated , prince of darkness is also a megadeth songs . What a cast , alice cooper Donald pleasence, heg shen and the kung fu champ from big trouble in little china , the dude from Simon and Simon
@Harrison Klebold yeah I really liked that movie ...very innovative.
"ravenous",also underrated!
meerkatz Couldn't agree more. Very good movie. I rewatched it just now.
I say that my pick is
the Phantasm series
Nice choice although I hate part 4.
@@jwnj9716 I love Phantasm II the most
The thing about the Phantasm series, is the plot is flipped on it's side by the last film making it not what you originally think it's about. But I'd agree that Phantasm II was the best film of the series.
Night of the Demons, Chopping Mall, Trick or Treat, Tucker and Dale, Evil Dead Reboot, Cabin in the Woods
Night of the Demons got 2 scream factory releases, Trick or Treat just got one, Cabin in the Woods made millions, Tucker and Dale is very popular, Evil Dead rebbot was very hyped.
Chopping mall is getting mentioned so often. Might actually have to look it up
CHOPPING MALL!
Trick r Treat is fuckin' amazing. That is one of the best horror anthology movies I've ever seen. A true classic!
@@SawBlood45 the average person never seen them
THE KEEP (1983)!!; directed by Michael Mann and have an all-star cast (Scott Glenn, Jürgen Prochnow, Ian McKellen and Gabriel Byrne), but was butchered during it's post-production, still a very entertaining film.
the book 'the keep' by f.paul wilosn is amazing!!..read it 3 times!
Watched this on Netflix recently, was really impressed.
The Keep's on Netflix?!
I've been trying to get hold of The Keep for years.
The problem I'm having is
I want it on VHS.
Not easy to find unless I'm willing to spend a small fortune.
I agree with Justin on Doom. I love that movie.
My favorite underrated horror(ish) movie is Saturday the 14th. Absolutely phenomenal horror comedy that I'd love to see a Rental Review on.
Real Ghostbusters Halloween Door 🎃 FTW! Great Underrated picks, guys.
I was actually paying more mind to that than what was actually being said. Lol
H.P. Lovecraft's From Beyond!
yes!!
Hell yes.
Love Prince of Darkness. Great choice!
Yeah I was actually surprised how much I liked that movie.
Completely underrated and feels more like The Thing, in terms of presentation. Carpenter is the master of independent horror cinema; a close second to Romero.
It’s funny cause the prince of darkness came on the other night.I just passed on it... I wish I watched it now.
The end of Prince of darkness legit gives me chills just thinking about it
Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight
I would argue that Billy Zane deserved an oscar for that role lol.
Great movie
I think I mentioned that.
@@justysilverman was hoping that 1 was gonna be your choice. Definitely agree with a love for the anthology type movies
Absolutely love this movie ❤️🖤💯
@guyverjay haha! Maybe a slight exaggeration. I was impressed with how he played the part though
James how come you never bring up Phantasm? It has a huge underground following
The huge following is why it is not under rated
Great series!
Prince of Darkness is my favorite Carpenter film. its just one of my all time favorite movies.
hell ya same
"They're making a new Doom movie, not related to this"
"Does it have the Rock?"
Yes, they are making a new Doom movie with the Rock not related to the previous one with the Rock. lol, I can't believe he asked that.
Maniac Cop 1 and 2
Demon Knight
The Horror Show
All those are really underrated!
Coffin Joe - At midnight I'll take yor soul.
Great one must see for real zombie movie fans.
We never see Kyle Justin anymore, what happened to Kyle Justin?
behind the couch probably. XD
He died years ago, being left in the AVGN room as a skeleton behind the couch.
He was killed by means of Battletoads.
@@HeadacheCentral he was brought back to life during the ikari warriors episode. So he's alive again.
@@genepool4783 ah yes, but for how long?

My Recommendations:
The Host (2006) - A Dad tries to save his daughter from a Giant Amphibious Monster in South Korea.
James always gives the more interesting and articulate reviews.
Tremors needs more love
Frizzurd lies. Tremors 2 is great. 3 and 4 aren't good movies but they still aren't as near as bad as they could've been, or as near as bad as other horror sequels often get.
1 and 2 are great. Haven't seen 3 and 4, but watched 5 and 6 and I think they're watchable but that's it.
@@wickedlateok1697 i had alot of fun with tremors 2 the 3rd one was a time wasterfor me
Yes, yes it does.
I don't think Tremors is that underrated mind, it's a cult classic (and rightly so).
