  • Опубліковано 21 жов 2024
  • INCIDENT DATE/TIME: 10-18-19 11:19 am
    LOCATION: 7310 Pogo Row
    CITY: San Diego
    DETAILS:
A friend found the male owner (approx mid-50’s) of this lot, trapped between the flatbed and the cab of his tow truck. 911 was called, and when the Police and Fire Dept. arrived, they found the male had been crushed by the flatbed. His friend told us that the victim was having hydraulic issues with the flatbed and had been working on the problem. The victim had been using a 2×4 piece of wood to keep the flatbed propped up, but it slipped. There was nothing that could be done for the male. The victim also had an automotive transmission on the flatbed to add to the weight. It’s not known how long the victim was trapped. There will be some difficulty in getting the victim out of the truck, due to the weight of the flatbed. The property is leased to all of these scrap yards by the City of San Diego. CalOSHA will be investigating.

Unpleasant to think about for us but probably he had a second of awareness. The body releases chemicals instantly. Years ago there was a metro accident near
Washington, DC. There was a flaw in the lines that are supposed to keep trains at safe distances. There was a train stopped in front. The next train wasn't stopped by the current. The driver did exactly what she was supposed to but it was too late. The top of the front car sheared off up and over the last car of the front train. The rest of the first car on the second train crushed to 3 or 4 feet in width, passengers, seats and all. Your mind can't conceive of such an horrific event. The sickening, maddening part was upper management knew there were problems and they ignored verifying slack repair work kind of like the FIU bridge. And now in New Orleans they are in a rush to demolish the Hard Rock building and you know it's to cover up errors. Workers are going to have to have a buddy system they choose and solidarity to stand up for it. We are well on our way to robber barons and peasants.

A wooden 2X4 should never be expected to hold metal item of that weight. Probably was trying to hurry and get it done. So he grabbed the 2X4. How sad. Hopefully he did not suffer. RIP.

My husband had an employee get his arm stuck between the cab and front wall of the dump truck bed. He was thin enough and the space between the two truck parts was wide enough to avoid a catastrophic injury to his arm. He was experienced and had been driving dump trucks for years. It was an accident. He had to stand for a few hours before they reaiized he never came back. You are right about the buddy system.

This brings back memories of an incident some 30 yrs ago. Me and my brother were out on a job site and heard screams for help from outside and down the street. We rush out to find a young man trapped in a horrific situation. His head was trapped under the bucket arm of a bobcat loader. The situation was getting worse by the second. The hydraulics of the arm were slowly leaking and closing around his neck. We could hear the creaking as the bucket was slowly closing tighter and tighter around his neck and head. In a panic will started stacking material under the bucket to keep it from falling further decapitating his head. My brother stayed with him a I drove to call fire/rescue. Getting back to the scene before rescue showed the owner of the equipment showed up. He bravely started the equipment to raise the bucket and free the young man. It is something I will never forget.

I know the police officers were taking pics with their cell phone cameras for evidentiary purposes but it just almost appears to be for personal reasons. A digital or regular camera would look better for appearances sake. I guess cuz people are usually using their cell phones to take pics to upload to or show them to others is probably why it seems unseemly. That's what looky-loos do. I realize that they taking pics for official purposes, though, just to make that clear. Poor guy, the victim. Hope he didn't suffer or just went quick. Sad. 😢
