this was the most amazing, simple, helpful and easy to understand watercolor lesson i have ever watched here in UA-cam so far. thank you very much for sharing your techniques and knowledge, sir.
Stan, thank you for being one of very few artists who keep stressing on getting the "value" right. I knew that "value" was important, but I didn't realize how important it was. You really drilled home how much "value" is so much more important than colour. It was magic to see how you can use any colour as long as the "value" is correct. I learned a lot from this lesson!
Dear Stan, I have been working, and I do mean working as sometimes it's very slow, on my watercolor portrait skills for quite sometime. I've watched numerous videos, but something you did in this video has unblocked a block in my painting, and for that I thank you. I had forgotten to pay attention to this all important concept of value that you made so abundantly clear in your tutorial. I will take what you have shown and try to use it. Thank you so much for taking the time to post this, you are a great teacher.
Mother of art!...THIS! this is the secret sauce!!! THANK YOU for sharing this! My jaw hurts from sitting for 17 minutes with my mouth wide open in awe...
Stan Miller Honestly, this was a major eye-opener, I could never wrap my head around art done with seemingly random colors. You have demystified a major issue for me. So again, thank you. I wish I could have attended your course. I look forward to more videos :)
+Cloud-Yo! Yes, the biggest mistake my students make is thinking color is so important. It's least important along with technique. If we desire to paint anything realistically, we need accurate drawing, values, mood and a good composition. Use any color you want, if the value is right, then listen to your fans rave about your great color. : )
A one handed watercolor masterfully painted, without drips or bleeds, no warping of the paper...simply amazing sir It proves it can be done and that gives me hope. Thank you.
Thank you for this lesson! So many people say 'lesson' or 'how to' on their videos, and then it is actually just a video watching them fast forward through creating a painting. It often comes off as dishonest or misleading, just trying to get people to click on their videos. You are the real deal though!!! Thank you so much!! Your paintings are beautiful!
Brilliant. I’ve been struggling with how to do these types of portrait and now I know it’s all about values, not colours! Can’t wait to try it out now!
I cannot tell you how grateful I am for these lessons. For 6 months I have been struggling with watercolors. I always thought I was good at portraiture but recently have been so disappointed and feel as though I"ve lost my talent. But your first video, on how much water should be in the brush, showed me the major mistake I've been making. Not one other video has mentioned this. And each subsequent lesson has taught me something I didn't understand. So Thank You from the bottom of my heart. You are the art teacher I have been waiting for.
Stan, thank you, thank you, thank you so much! This is pure magic presented in a very simple way. I find these 15 minutes of video to be a pure gem. Thank you again.
As someone new to watercolor painting, painting people always made me nervous because I was always scared the colors wouldn't be right or something. Thank you for making me realize that the color doesn't matter! Only the value. Now I feel more at ease with really getting creative with my paintings!
This is a magic! The extreme importance of “value” and the accuracy of it achieved by you when seen from a simple tool of a small window, every thing is magical for me. What a lesson! Genius!
Just a "Thanks" won't be enough at all to express my thankfulness to you Sir. I was trying painting myself without any teacher until I found You. I want to Thank You to be the best teacher of an unworthy student.
Stan, you are the great artist and your teaching skills are simply FANTASTIC!! Lots of art books and videos as well try to explain the value subject in more or less confusing way. Your 17 minuts of Lesson 16 is amazingly clear, concise and so understandable! Thank you soooo much :-)
Using a round brush instead of the flat brush would work just as well. Using a small brush and going very slow, would work great. If you work slow with a small brush your painting would simply be much more realistic.
Stan, I can’t tell you how important this video has been to me. I have watched it so many times when I want inspiration to loosen up and carefully observe value.
So glad this lesson is helpful. It is so true, that getting values and drawing correct, if one desires a realistic painting, is very much more important then color. Most think painting a portrait is all about correct color, absolutely not. Happy painting.
Thank u! This tutorial was exactly what this returning artist needed! Omgggg! I forgot to see this way and you perfectly explained it! Now I am only seeing in values and tones!!!! Thank u!!!!!!
Wow! One of the best tutorials I've ever seen. Fantastic learning experience, listening to your comments while you paint. As a beginner in watercolor, I have learned so much from your videos. I am painting right along with you. Thanks for posting!
Glad the lesson is helpful. Yes, if you desire to learn to paint more accurately what you see, having the reference photo close to the painting, observing carefully, is very important.
Thank you for this lesson sir! I'm trying color for my first time and was intimidated with it at first. As long as the value is the same, the color one uses doesn't matter. Outstanding work sir.
Stan, I have always loved this style of painting. I have been trying to understand this technique for years as I use YT as my main art education. Your explanation of values has locked in the piece I wasn't grasping with other tutorials/explanations. Right at 5:00-5:15, I have been trying to match color when what I've been struggling with was VALUE! Thanks so much!
This was fantastic. The point was made beyond anything I’ve watched in the last 3 years about value and color. Thank you so much; I get it now with this video!
I have heard "VALUE trumps COLOR" over and over and over in my class. You have made me SEE the truth in this! AHAaaa Moment! Amazing amazing, amazing!!!! Thanks! I like the little windows to help compare value, too. The final part showing another version in different colors really drove this home as well. Your are a Wizard! Great video!
Outstanding lesson. I don't see a lot of watercolor portrait artists doing Internet instruction, but you, Stan, are certainly one of the best! Thank you!
I watched the first 5 minutes of this and learnt more essentials about watercolour than all the videos I've watched within the past 2 weeks!!!! Thanks man, I think with practice, this video alone can help me go from beginner to intermediate.
Been following Stan for years and what a super artist he is. I have often been criticized for saying that most artists use far too many colours and the colour does not matter and here Stan proves it with this super painting with no pre drawing. Fantastic!
Tracing is not cheating. All that matters is that you enjoy making the art. Your application of watercolor is absolute genius! You're an inspiration to me.
I have just started watercolor painting, have been watching numerous artists and their techniques, from loose, flowing pieces to detailed work, but yours is the first I found on values. This was enlightening and watching how you showed it doesn't matter what colors you use but the values, well it blew me away. Many many thanks
The values are so on point that, when you'd finished the eyes, I could already tell you were painting a person of colour, despite your only using only blues, greens and reds. Thank you ever so much for this invaluable lesson.
Your talent and technique are magical....even though you use many colors the portrait reads perfectly. I wish you had workshops in Florida in the winter. Your instruction is so straight forward and easily understood as you paint. Amazing!
Marvyl J Thank you Marvyl, I have taught in Florida in the winter. If you know of a painting group in your area, ask them to invite me to come and teach a workshop. Keep painting!
I've just watched this again a year later and am still blown away by the colour combinations that Stan Miller gets away with. He is absolutely correct. The colour really doesn't matter if the values are right. Blue skin ... green skin ... works for me. Once more ... thank you.
Stan great job in explaining the whole process. I have learnt a lot with this video. I have always tried to integrate the values but with you explaining the values this way I have been able to understand it much better. Thank you so much for your kindness in sharing your knowledge with us.
thanks a lot, Stan, for your video instructions on watercolor. i finally found my "aha!" moment because of you...... am almost about to give up trying but luckily found your videos..... this is amazing and awesome.... thank you, thank you!
Mr. Miller Thank you so much for this lesson... To tell you the truth I am not a painter. Not even a hack at it. Nada!!! But I can completely understand what you are talking about!. I see it as you are teaching in the videos . I'm now thinking about pursuing painting as a passion..thanks again and I will watching more of your UA-cam videos...
This video is inspiring and I can't wait to try your technique! I've never considered focusing on values rather than colour. Really awesome. Thank you for putting this up! I will make the little cardboard window viewers. I very much appreciate your verbal repetition.. I have an acquired brain injury, with consequential poor memory, but your repetition will help me retain the lesson. Thank you again!! Your generosity, in sharing this, is inspiring too
Thank you for the amazing lesson, I'm taking a mixed media painting class in a little over a month and this was exactly what I needed to get me used to the idea of painting things with more than just one media along with making things more colorful. Thank you, it is greatly appreciated!
ooohhhhmg....the best ever ever ever tutorial and fantastic painting ,thank you so much for sharing, very clear explanation and tips..will take this as an inspiration since i have stopped painting for last 3 years... love your work so muchh!
Found your video, like a ray of light shining through many clouds! Talk about serendipity! Thank you so much for this lesson, the message is perfect for this student seeking the teacher.
I watched this video like, a year ago and was amazed but too intimidated to try it, but now I’m ready! I love this! I have a very cool black and white photo of my son, who has a very chiseled face, and is an artist as well. I want to do this with that picture. You are so right about color. I’m always thinking about the color more than the value. Thanks so much for this video and I’m going to create those squares so I can check the values!
Excellent instruction. Painted with a 1" flat whereas I would have used rounds for many areas. You make it look easy. Of course you have a wealth of experience to know that by dipping your brush into that amount of pigment with that amount of water it will produce this value.... Still, holding the paper in your hand being cognizant of where the camera is, talking to us and painting quickly at the same time. Simply in awe.
Thank you, you might watch lesson 25, I do this subject again...using a number of brushes and my hands...to teach that it is not the equipment that makes our paintings work...
So glad to watch your tutorial ....wonderful and brilliant comments......vwry beneficial ...very interesting indeed and above all very beautiful work ........
Greetings from England... HA HA! I'm so glad I found you... I'm a photographer trying to learn to paint and having spent years and years in the darkroom believe me when I say I GET IT with the idea of value... Different jargon and equipment but exactly and precisely the same idea. This one tutorial has TRANSFORMED the way I paint and I thank you from the heart. Such a simple idea (because I already know it backwards) but as a beginner in a new medium you need someone to tell you / show you. "Any colour you want" was like having the hand cuffs taken off ! Purple trees, red skies, orange faces, portraits out of the whole box. Beautiful. You are clearly a seasoned practitioner and educator - keep on keeping on my friend, keep giving it away, you'll make the world a better place. Ever do ink and wash? I'd love to see your take on that...
Thank you kind sir...it so happens that I just put down "David Copperfield", by Dickens...and here you are, from England...speaking, I swear I can hear it, like Dickens, with that wonderful accent. So grateful that my lessons have helped you. I wish you the best as you continue your painting.
You are awesome awesome awesome ... ♥♥♥ we want more more more tutorials.... more portraits and landscapes and all kind of watercolors... please keep the good work up... keep uploading. Love and respect ♥♥♥
Stan Miller do you ever come to tidewater virginia? I take painting classes with Betty Anglin through lifelong learners. I know we'd all enjoy a workshop if you are ever out this way.
This was a very useful video for me and I am glad I had the fortune of opening it! I was in the middle of a value problem I thought. But what you showed me right now was the total solution to get rid of some very nasty value miscalculations, bugging me for some time. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Great job!
oh wow I just loved that. Amazing how any colour works but like you said the value not the colour is what matters. Brilliant and with such a big brush, amazing. Thank you.
@@Stanleylestermiller Do you send prints overseas? I am in South Australia and have always loved your work. Do you have a catalogue or list of your prints? Know I would love to have one or two. as I love your portraits but also your paintings of Venice.

I really enjoy your teaching style. The importances you place on "values" is so critical and is the keystone to watercolor painting structure. Looking forward to signing up for a class someday.
Great tutorials! It's possible for an art teacher to be a good teacher without being a good artist, and it's possible for a good artist to be a terrible teacher. Your tutorials are excellent because you are both a great artist and great teacher. Thanks for the videos.
Absolutely the best video I ever seen on values. I am having so much trouble with this in my paintings. Thank you so much. Will look for other of your videos!
Stan, all I can say is WOW! It was pretty darn amazing how you brought such a likeness from dabbing various blocks of paint in different areas! Makes me re-examine what I think about painting!
Thanks so much for your great video. I shared with my students who are just learning watercolor. We are all inspired. I love where you say it doesn't matter what color you use, just get the drawing and value right. So, so true.
Soooo Amazinggg!!! Thank you.... i started using water colors around six months back n have been practicing almost everyday n loving it more n more...Some things i am happy i was intuitively doing right but your lessons are making me feel so rich....cant wait to paint through this perspective...
Glad to hear a number of people are benefiting from this lesson.
Stan Miller Yes, this is awesome. Thanks!
+Stan Miller It's fantastic. Now I know why my watercolor paintings sucked.
+Stan Miller Great lesson! Thanx for sharing!

I just can’t believe how easily it was made, just a great artist to achieve that...wonderful
You are awesome awesome awesome ... ♥♥♥ we want more more more tutorials.... more portraits and landscapes and all kind of watercolors... please keep the good work up... keep uploading. Love and respect ♥♥♥
What an absolutely brilliant demonstration of value over color and brushwork. Thanks so much!
Your have changed my understanding of painting for life! thank you so much
Good to hear my lessons are helpful!~
I've been traveling, teaching, Thailand, San Francisco, Seattle...another lesson coming soon once I'm home for more then a week...
Stan Miller do you ever come to tidewater virginia? I take painting classes with Betty Anglin through lifelong learners. I know we'd all enjoy a workshop if you are ever out this way.
Great lesson for my next project, I'm doing a portrait with colors just like you used in this tutorial. Thank you for posting Stan!
This was a very useful video for me and I am glad I had the fortune of opening it! I was in the middle of a value problem I thought. But what you showed me right now was the total solution to get rid of some very nasty value miscalculations, bugging me for some time. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Great job!
Thank you!
oh wow I just loved that. Amazing how any colour works but like you said the value not the colour is what matters. Brilliant and with such a big brush, amazing. Thank you.
Thank you, glad the lesson is helpful!
@@Stanleylestermiller Do you send prints overseas?
I am in South Australia and have always loved your work.
Do you have a catalogue or list of your prints?
Know I would love to have one or two. as I love your portraits but also your paintings of Venice.
@@colleeningham7335 Hi Colleen, glad you like my lessons, and my paintings. If you desire to communicate with me about my work, or my lessons, the best way is to email me: stan@stanmiller.net (visit my website for contact info and other info)
Realy great sir, This video has changed my approch to the water colour painting.
My new favourite artist. Learned a lot from that.
o god... man U r amazing.... i was fed up from water colorS n now am in love with it....ur work is amazing very muvh helpful....thnkew
Thanks Michael.
Absolutely the best video I ever seen on values. I am having so much trouble with this in my paintings. Thank you so much. Will look for other of your videos!
Glad my lessons are helpful Mary.
It's so cool to see how people paint with such different styles and methods with the same medium. I use watercolor very differently. Love your work.
Stan, all I can say is WOW! It was pretty darn amazing how you brought such a likeness from dabbing various blocks of paint in different areas! Makes me re-examine what I think about painting!
thanks John, as I mention, it's really quite simple...accurate drawing and correct value...any color, and it works every time.
Thanks so much for your great video. I shared with my students who are just learning watercolor. We are all inspired. I love where you say it doesn't matter what color you use, just get the drawing and value right. So, so true.
Happy that my lessons are helpful!
Wow wow wow and very interesting as well!! Thanks for sharing.
