I work for a local family of dealerships in my area. Im at a ford dealer and The Ford 10R140 and the GM 10L1000 are the same trans. According to my local Ford rep It was co developed between Ford and GM. The service manager of our chevy dealer said he was told the same by the local GM rep. If you contact Alison the 10L1000 is a "Alison certified transmission" meaning not built by them but is built to their specifications and can handle their stress testing, so GM can carry the name plate for marketing
So pretty much a auto version of a t56
Nooo....say it ain't so! I wanted it to be a true GM gem. Was the first one all theirs at least? 2007-2016?
Doesn't Ford and GM share the same 10speed for the full size trucks as well?
@@MrWeaponlord Ford and GM have made several units together. 6F50/6T70, 10R80/10L80, 10R140/10L1000.
It’s like how the 6L80 is a “Hydramatic” but when you look at it, it’s built like an Allison. Was made during the period GM fully owned them.
Thanks for the video. Please do a more in depth video on these transmissions. Look at customer complaints on both the Ford 10R and the GM 10L. There is so much false information out there stating that the 10R140 (Ford) and 10L1000 (GM) were a collaborative effort when in fact they were not. The collaboration was with the 1/2 ton 10 speeds. I have found your videos to be some of the most accurate on UA-cam. You clearly do your research and homework. I look forward to more. Thank you.
Jimm2442, thank you the clarification.
The 10 speeds are beefed up versions
They're both scaled up versions of the 10r80. Internally they're pretty much the same.
Allison says they do not build 10 speed transmissions. If it's not a Allison 1000, they said, do not bring it to them.
Oh yeah it’s trash when you put it behind a ford but you put the name Allison on it everybody loves it
Its a ZF design, Allison had absolutely nothing to do with it.
I’m having trouble with my GM / Allison transmission. Locks up and downshifts from 9th to 1st at 80mph. It’s a death trap
I have questions 1. They said ford co created the new 10speed for gm was that true ? 2. The 17+ have a new design frame as well? 3. I hate the 2020 interiors im waiting for the 24s
GM and Ford co-developed the 10 speed for the half-ton trucks, SUV's, performance cars but only up to a certain point then went their own way to finish each of their 10 speeds.
For HD trucks GM and Allison collaborated on theirs and Ford did their own.
@@dustintilton7920 wrong. 99% of the transmission is the same. Bell housing and torque converter are really the only difference. Its basically the 10 speed in the half ton just bigger and more heavy duty
@@mattcaesar5781 if that was really the case they would be having the same problems the light duty 10 speeds have, plus since GM no longer owns Allison there's no way Allison is going to let them use their name on the side of GM trucks without having heavy envolvement with that transmission. I have a 2021 chevy 3500 dually and that transmission for sure performs and shows that Allison had a big part in it, its just as good and better than the previous 6 speed.
@@dustintilton7920 why would Allison not want free money? Ive seen them come apart side by side its the same. Look up the gear ratios. Your gonna tell me that two big manufactures are gonna just happen to so the same ratios thru 10 gears. I
@@mattcaesar5781 GM and Ford aren't using the same ratios, cause its not the same. You can find each gear ratio out for both those transmissions pretty easy by looking it up. A company like Allison is not going to take free money just for their name, thats their reputation on the side of these trucks, if they had no part of it and it turned to be a complete garbage transmission that would not only destroy their reputation for those truck but eveything the make for commercial applications as well. You clearly don't own one and know what your talking about and it shows.
Seems to me that the sweet spot of technology and simplicity stopped after the mid 2000’s
Mid-90's to mid-2000's for engines depending on which brand. 7.3 Powerstroke was better earlier and the LLY/LBZ and 5.9 common rail were better choices later compared to the cool-but-fussy 6.0 Ford. The automatic transmissions were a different story. Those actually got better from about the mid-2000's on until 2020 when this 10 speed gear-war nonsense started up. GM started that with the Allison and Ford and Chrysler had no choice but to up their transmission game. The 6-speed auto's from all of them were all pretty good, to the point where the manual transmissions became unnecessary and went away (unfortunately)
True Diesel greatness stopped at the LBZ.
It’s TRASH. Just like every Auto Trans that GM makes.
What makes it trash?
Randys Transmission just did a tear down of these two 10 speeds. Look it up.
My OLD 22 Denali hds' transmission blew up with less than 11k miles. Whoever claims they made it I don't care...it still sucks in my opinion.
Is this the 10 speed that put in all the gym truck now? Cause if they paired the 3.0 duramax with a Allison trans that would be phenomenal!
No, that 10 speed is the one they designed with Ford. The Allison 10 Speed was solely GM/Allison.
@@Allenfreedom1776 just like i told the other guy. The 10140 and allison 10 speed are the same internals. They took a 10 speed from the 1/2 tons and enlarged it and beefed them up. Gm would loose a lot of sales if they lost the allison brand. Allison approved the design but didnt develop it
@@mattcaesar5781 I wish they would have put a Allison behind the 3.0. The new 10 speed on that motor shift weird. Like it’s slipping but it’s not. And when towing its even worse.
@@alittledirtfun weird my bro has one it does great
@@mattcaesar5781 not saying it doesn’t do good. It’s just weird how it shift. I’m use to the old school shift kit slams
Let's be honest gym has never built a good transmission only when they ever Built that was half way good was the Turbo 400 but then you had to do a bunch of work to make it handle power Power glides where it's at Orlando
Gm owns allison
They sold them a while ago. Just business.
But Allison is a dedicated heavy duty only transmission company. That's why u don't see half ton Allison Silverado. Gm also owns hydramatic but you don't see hydramatic 1 ton duramax. Need more research kid
@@mann_idonotreadreplies All marketing.
No more research needed my statement stands correct
Allison doesn't claim the 10 speed
The 10r1000 is the same as the 10r140 ford transmission they were co designed together and the Allison name was held onto to make customers feel better. Kind of like how they still call the LS engines a vortec or how ford calls there current diesel a powerstroke even though they are not made by international
Completely false ford and gm only co developed the half tons. The 10l and 10r have no similar parts inside of them
Lol the ford 10r is stronger watch Randy’s disassembly
@@ceementality why are more people complaining about failed 10Rs then?
@@ceementality they even have a class action lawsuit for them 😂
They have a video showing how much beefier the ford trans is….
I think this video is dumb. The 10 speed Allison has a major flaw long-term (same clutch packs handle many gears)that even nextgendiesel tried to offer Allison an upgrade kit that would fix Long term. I Love Allison but the 10 speed is lazy.
They’ll regret putting their name on a unit not designed by them. The opposite of the 6L80/90.
you are full of it this trans. was a collaboration with Ford they both us the same parts
Junk ... same as Ford transmission except for some additional heat treatments and polishing of parts . Ask any hotshot how they hold up .. garbage
For hotshot nothing beats cummins
Aisin AS69RC is still the best for a hauling/workhorse truck, but not a great trans for a coal rolling play-toy truck or daily butt hauler that occasionally hooks to a boat or RV. And the motor it's behind is still the best one for serious work, although the 2019+ reliability on those has been not so good.
