I did the same thing during my Chemo for Lymphoma. Floyd is so soothing. Two day's after Christmas 2017 they took out my Spleen because it was 50% Cancerous with Lymphoma. It came back in 2016 so that's when I did six month's of Chemo. When they got done with my Chemo they did a PET Scan. What they saw was that the Lymphoma was gone, but I had Lung Cancer and had to have my Left Upper Lung taken out. Then they saw that the Cancer had migrated to my chest wall, so they took about a square foot of it out. I also have nine Stent's in my heart. I have the album cover from Dark Side of the Moon etched above my name on my headstone and they are to play nothing but Pink Floyd at my wake. Just a matter of time. I hope you are well and stay that way!

Why many people believe the song is about drugs. It is actually about how Roger felt like as a child, when he was sick with a fever, as an adult he got that feeling again sometimes, entering a state of delirium, where he felt detached from reality.

There are a couple ways to interpret the song. When Roger Waters wrote it, he was describing the way he felt when he was sick when he was young, and a similar feeling when he was sick and got some sort of shot from a doctor (probably a muscle relaxer) before a performance that made him feel numb.
However, this song also is part of the album (The Wall) that tells the story of a performer named Pink. In that story, drugs are involved, and a doctor gives Pink a shot so he can stand up on stage and perform, because he is too drugged up to stand up without a stimulant to counteract the drugs.

    • @mikemclaughlin3306
      @mikemclaughlin3306 5 років тому +2

No he wasnt..... the song was written about a 1977 concert in Philadelphia, during the Animals tour.... he was sick and they sent him a doctor who gave him tranquilizers to get him through the show. That is confirmed by him in multiple interviews....... in reference to the wall, it's at the point where pink has cut himself off from the outside world, and he has resorted to self medication.... this is, in the album, where he devolves into insanity.

Officially, the song was written in 1977 after an incident in Philadelphia, where he was too sick to perform, and a doctor gave him tranquilizers/ muscle relaxers to get him "through the show".
In perspective to the album The Wall..... which is, in my opinion, the greatest concept album, ever..... it is at the point where the main character, pink, had been self medicating to combat the loneliness and emptiness he was feeling after cutting himself off from the outside world..... it is the moment he descends into madness.

That's a million dollar light show. ( it does so much more over the rest of the show). They had to have three complete setups. It would take the roadies 3 days to set up for a show therefore they needed 3 complete setups, so they could hopscotch around the country while on tour. That is being in one city for a night or 2, while setting setting up in the next city, while another crew is pulling in to the next one. CRAZY but awesome at the same time.

In comes the manager, with doctor in tow because, well, there's a show that's due to begin in a few moments. So they shoot Pink up with "stuff" so that he could make it to the event. -- The song is a conversation between manager/doctor and Pink.

The song is in three voices. The first, for lack of a better name, (sung in this version by Rick Wright) is the Doctor. "Just tell me where is hurts." The voice is external and talking to the second character. The second character speaks in an internal voice (let's call him Pink, sung by David Gilmour). "When I was a child..." This voice is all inside Pink's head. The third voice is Pink's guitar (David Gilmour's ethereal playing). This voice expresses all the emotion of alienation and angst. This voice is the key that makes the song great. Greatest song ever and this is the best version of that song.

“The child is grown, The dream is gone”
The line above, right before one of the greatest solos EVER, explains Comfortable Numb....
“Can anybody hear me” is the inner child dying & screaming out alone in an adult body & adult mind, nobody adult can hearing the pain....
As a child, you never give up on anything that means something important to you, an adult tells you to stop but you do not listen as if the adult is speaking a language you do not understand, the language being “give up”, nonstop waves of “give up”....
You become an adult, now you are just part of the brain washed adult heard, “adults only do this, adults only do that, that is childish”, you follow with no push back nor questions asked, you’re just “okay, will do, no problem”, now you’re Comfortable Numb....
“Feel a little pin prick” & every lyric after is showing that adults need something injected or taking for energy & “life”, as a child you wake up energize naturally”, no drug required to “live”....

Craig Chaquico from Jefferson Starship is also a very good guitarist. There is a song with a great solo. It's called save your love. Craig was in his early 20's when they recorded this song. Lead vocals is Mickey Thomas who sang Fooled around and fell in love with Elvin Bishop. Very talented musicians in this band. Craig Chaquico has since put out solo albums and 90% is acoustic, and you are right. The acoustic guitar does sound nice. Anyways, the studio version is good . Hopefully you will react to it. The solo in this song is fantastic, and I believe this man is underrated. Now David Gilmour wss born with a guitar in his hands. When.he plays you can feel.the emotions in the sound. One of the best, if not the best guitarist on the planet.

If you want to hear something that sounds like your being 'lifted out of yourself' at the end, listen to Pink Floyd's 'The Great Gig in the Sky'. Both the studio version (which I prefer) or the Pulse version sang by those same 3 women you saw here in 'Comfortably Numb'. Great Gig is thought to be about the stages a person goes through when dying and is like nothing else you've ever heard.

I notice young people are always trying to figure out rock lyrics right from the jump..First off, if you were able to understand lyrics right off it wouldn't be poetic, now would it?... Where's the mystique in that?....You're looking for a road map....Directions!....That kind of information is reserved for the back of oatmeal boxes, or directions on how to put your kids bike together..Or, Pop music...And on the flip side, many songs are written through personal experiences that no one could relate to, either ever, or right off..Songs are also written leaving to the general public to interpret for themselves...Some songs have no deep meaning at all..They just sound good, and just digging the vibe, most often (especially in Rock), is enough.

Yes we did. :) It was 10 nights at Earls Court. I went to 4 nights. And on the first leg of this tour I caught them at Wembley Stadium and two nights at the London Docklands Arena. Caught loads of tours 70s to 90s, and I think everyone agreed this was the stand out concert of that period. It was even broadcast on national TV at the time.

The only thing confusing is why anyone would halt a Gilmour solo!?? Folks born after 1990 care soooo much about lyrics. Must be the hip-hop influence. Wonder what you will make out of Led Zeppelin Stairway to Heaven and/or Tommy James and the Shondells Crimson and Clover! LOL

Roger Waters wrote the lyrics. While many people thought the song was about drugs, Waters claims it is not. The lyrics are about what he felt like as a child when he was sick with a fever. As an adult, he got that feeling again sometimes, entering a state of delirium, where he felt detached from reality.

Ok, here is what the lyrics mean since your were trying to figure out what some of it meant. The Song is about............It's not about anything as in "a song on a record" in that sense. It is the sound track part used in the Pink Floyd movie "The Wall". Which is modeled after a guy named Sid Barret I think, who was a close friend of Rodger Waters. It is the crazy twisted world of this guy who is a Rock Star(we are talking ending 70s). When this song plays in the movie, we see Rock Star Bob Geldof on the verge of a O.D., and this song kicks in, as his managers try to find away to get him up and going so he can preform on stage. In which his life takes a mental down fall after. But the sound tracks songs are too cool to be just sound tracks to a movie, and became the album. You might get lucky by looking for it up here and locate that movie excerpt with the scene and song play of what I am talking about. This guitar solo version is very good. But I like the "Delicate Sounds of Thunder" version way better. Which is also up here too. You may want to check that out as well.

You can play an electric without an amp you know... And if you get an amp you can control the volume so no problem playing with a connected amp without bothering anyone unless you do it late at night then it won't do when everything else is quiet in the building. Tho you can use a headset, just plug it in and then you can crank it up as much you like.

Say Doc...ya just got pinked. The Floyd with David Gilmour's mastery over the guitar will reach down into your inner core and yank out your soul taking it to universal places you have never experienced before only to gently and safely send it back where it belongs...comfortably numb...
I growing up with Pink Floyd as a teenager I really get a better perspective in watching you younger folk react to them...Good job...
