      Being fair on mains though, they play that character because they know them best. Changing main is like changing jobs. You know you could do it with some practice, but practice will take time.

      Can a top tier player take a nerfed character and make it top tier? I'm genuinely asking. If that's the case then your personal connection with the character (visual/audio design, their lore etc) could be the deciding factor of whether you put the time in.

    • @trippiewest

      As a Juri main i agree

    • @EOTW168
      @EOTW168 6 років тому +4

      Johnny Thousand I don't think that a top tier player can take a nerfed character and make that character "top tier" (unless they find some unreal tech that no one knew about) but they are fully capable of using their character and winning big. The nerfs will ultimately affect how hard they're gonna have to work for it, and some players are not willing/able to put that time and effort in tournaments. (I personally applaud the player that sticks with their main but with how much is riding on tournaments now adays, I also understand why they would switch to ensure victory)

    How I deal with nerfs and buffs:
    Is Blanka good? If yes, I will play him.
    Is Blanka bad? If yes, I will play him.
    Did Blanka get buffed? If yes, I will play him.
    Did Blanka get nerfed? If yes, I will play him.

    I think the most impressive thing is watching someone win with a character after they get hit with the nerf bat. The level of game sense and discipline to win, in spite of huge potential changes to their strengths, is something amazing to see.
    On the other hand, I don't actually hate seeing buffed characters win, since it means I get to see more viable contenders in tournaments, which ultimately leads to a more diverse array of fighters to enjoy.

    It just pisses me off when my character gets nerfed or "balanced" once a while and then there's this super easy to use and devastating character that hasn't changed from the start and I just have to wonder, are some characters taboo ?

    • @spaxhuxley302
      @spaxhuxley302 6 років тому +38

      Yeah, I think that a lot, it’s actually why I dropped dragon ball fighterz. But I don’t see a character becoming taboo, but instead used more often by more people. Not to say that there’s anything wrong with a playing powerful character, but you gotta admit that seeing those kinds of characters can become annoying. CoughCellCough

    0:59 "Before, in some matchups, I just play and I can win. I don't need to think, but now every matchup I need to think." Wow, what a horrible nerf. Rashid players actually have to think and use their brain now. How will they ever recover?

    • @DigitalHalftones
      @DigitalHalftones 6 років тому +12

      This was literally the start of season 3 Rashid. You could just go auto pilot with absolutely no thought and win. The nerfs were definitely needed, but the question is if they went too far. Seeing as Oil King is placing maybe not?

    • @DigitalHalftones
      @DigitalHalftones 6 років тому +3

      No man. He literally meant I have to think about what options to take now with the character. I've heard other Rashid players say the exact same thing since the nerf. If it was relearning a move/combo he wouldn't have said "every match up I need to think". He's talking specifically about options, since the auto pilot option doesn't work now.

    • @2supermaro
      @2supermaro 6 років тому

      Yeah he's a good player obviously but Rashid was so good and oppresive against characters that after a while of playing it's just the same formula with each character you face. Apply pressure > Mixups etc etc.
      Now he has to think about individual matchups and who and what the character may struggle against.

  • @210LG

    when they nerf a character i main, it usually means a specific part of the play style is no longer viable in other words, i need to be careful and really think my strategies, but i can still play the character and over time i get used to it.
    when they buff my mains it just feels like new tools have been added to my repertoire but I still don't play recklessly, because my opponent will most likely be aware of this new tool and will be more careful.

    The will to win. Mad respect to these guys and all mains that stick out the buff/nerf storm.
    Season 1 I was a Ryu main because he was the only character I could click with. I had a good run with him and then I just started getting frustrated. Season 2 on out I main Urien and like the character and his mechanics. I've suffered my fair share of losses, but that's made me even hungrier. He's had some nerfs, but didn't become unplayable. It made me adapt and fight smarter and not harder.
    Great vid overall.

    Bruce Lee said, "Talents create opportunities. But great passion can create talent." I think the same is true for tiers. Look at Xian's Gen in SF4, or in UMVC3 how Chris G's Morrigan changed the game. Even now, Tokido's Akuma pretty much single handedly carried him into the top tier. I would say matchups are more important than anything. Infiltration has shown us that. But the advantage of having a main, I think, is that it allows you to not have to think, you can just feel. I think that's what Oil King was talking about, that he couldn't just play because he had to make adjustments. Too many nerfs, not enough buffs. And as always, get gud.

    • @Oimae
      @Oimae 6 років тому +18

      lol you act as if Tokido is the reason why Akuma is top tier. Akuma is top tier because he's busted. He's good at everything, has amazing oki, good walkspeed, really good damage, is plus on a lot of stuff, has a 3f, has a reversal, has two strong v-triggers and one of the best v-skills. Tokido was just the first to figure him out and then everyone copied his style.
      What oilking was saying was that he couldn't just autopilot doing rashid's dumb shit. They nerfed the dumb stuff he had but he's still top 10.

    I don't play competatively, so nerfs don't hurt as bad (I don't have to worry about losing rankings...it still sucks if a favorite character gets hard nerfed to the point they're no longer fun to play). Buffs are usually an issue only when a character I already have trouble beating gets buffed to be even more of a pain in the tail. That's pretty rare though since most characters I have trouble with are already considered over powered.
    It does strike me as odd to have a game intended for competitive players and then to do nerfs/buffs mid-season. Wouldn't it make more sense to do changes after a season ends so that all players stay on equal footing during the season? If a problem isn't game breaking and Capcom wants to be taken seriously in the e-sports arena, I'd think they'd need to show a bit more care when they make their changes.

    If a game greatly balanced, like Brood War (or Dive Kick of course), you can enjoy any character even in the very top tier competition. But I have to agree that usually you have to pick a top tier character if you want to win, especially in some championships. But I admire the players who stick with specific characters and always like to watch their play and efforts.
    Gerald, we are waiting for you. Your videos are one of the best contents in UA-cam.

    I play smash a lot, and am trying to get to a competitive level. The thing about the nerfs and buff of ultimate though is that they mainly focus on removing the things that make certain characters and moves good, and making bad ones better. I actually try to avoid using top tiers for two reasons along with this. One, using top tiers because they are "better" has always felt dishonorable to me, as well as that just sort of means you won't stand out much, will get at least some hate, and won't have to put in as much effort overall. The other reason is that when maining a mid to low tier, there is not a small chance that you could actually raise them up a bit because of new discoveries that wouldn't have been made otherwise. An example of this would be yoshi in melee. Used to be considered a very poor character, then a good player picked him up figured some things out and boom: solid high tier. And of course it feels way better to beat someone at an objective disadvantage than playing "optimally"
    Edit: Made this comment a year ago and wow it had nothing to do with anything in this video

    This concept applies to so many games. CCGs deal with this a lot too, where a deck either starts out too strong or gets buffed with newer cards, then gets banned or nerfed to oblivion later. I never minded adjusting to one deck I played getting nerfed, but it really sucked when like my 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th options were all nerfed simultaneously in the same major overhaul.

    How do I handle nerfs/buffs? I at least try to adapt to the changes before saying “time to Switch.”
    Just because a character gets nerfed, doesn’t exactly mean they can’t win. You just have to find a *new* way to do so, which takes a lot of time and dedication.
    Also your editing is God-Tier.

    Yo Gary, what’s us bro. I love your Chanel. I play injustice 2 and I main supergirl. She’s been top tier before but she recently got nerffed. Her down 1 got some frames added to it so she isn’t safe on block anymore. Also her screen wide laser now requires a meter burn to execute.
    At first I was mad about her down 1. But I just kept playing her and playing her and I got used to the added frames so now I use it to play mind games with my opponents. It’s hard to explain but it helps me catch them off guard.
    The screen wide eye laser I would use ALL the time. Which left me vulnerable but after the nerf I had to wait till I have the meter. So my use of it dropped significantly. Which is a good thing because in hind site, it was my crutch. I would always use it. Now I’m more of a surgeon with it. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

    Least impactful are changes to health pool, it makes fighting more or less risky, but you generally play the same so it's easier to deal with and against. But more impactful is when a move gets changes.
    If the move which gets changes was a combo extender/finisher. then that's less difficult. You still gotta go down through all the combos which used it and see if or how they still work, and labbing out new ones involving the buffed move which didn't before.
    But when the move which is changed is a neutral tool like a DP or other reversal, a movement option, or a projectile, they you got a lot more work to put in testing all the situations where it can now be used, and the risk-reward for doing so. All of the other characters in the game's options against it and if an how they can punish it.
    Even small changes can sorta make it like relearning the character. And it's really depending on the number of changes rather than the severity.
    Are changes "bad"? No... no that's preposterous. Rashid deserved nerfs, he's still strong. And Cammy's changes were useful but not too much. But it's still a lot of work the players have to put in to make the metagame settle and get used to the patch.

    I love this video, Once i latch onto a character i tend to stick with them no matter what happens to them.
    In SFV i main Chun, and i mained her even when she was struggling bad and when she was amazing. I don't pick characters based on playstyle, or how strong or weak they are perceved to be. I play characters solely based on if i like their character. I look at their stage, Is their music cool? Is their story something i really like, Do they sound cool when they do special moves or have cool win poses? And the most important, do i find them attractive? I like Chun-li cause she looks cool when she poses, she's cheerful, and she's beautiful, and she fights with honor.
    However in SF4 i mained Juri which is the exact polar opposite with Chun, almost like the evil version of her. However i didnt like her playstyle in 5 so i stayed with chun because i liked all the asthetic factors of juri as well, i liked her flirty but deadly attitude and the way she stood when fighting looked hella cool. When i was much younger i played alot more male characters and usually never picked females. I mained Guile in Super turbo because his music is fucking awesome, He was ripped and manly as fuck and i thought his anti air special and sonic boom were cool. I've never been someone to sift though characters based on buffs or nerfs.

    I'm also a Rashid main, but I took a bit of a hiatus when he was at his best (Too busy with school stuff to play too much). Now that its summer and he's been hit with some nerfs, its made it a bit harder to get back into the swing of things (That EX eagle strike nerf is driving me nuts). I'm sure I'll figure it out, but its hurt my drive to get back into the game a bit. I might surrender back to the silver ranks for a bit until I can play a little better.

Rashid players.... Try zeku... I know it sounds crazy but if you miss Rashids old Shenanigans... Young zeku will provide that high you lost...

      choopy bohn to be honest nerfs and tiers doesnt matter in silver ranks. You can win with any characters just with fundamentals. I am a super diamond nash player by the way and i know about every move being unsafe, rashid is still super strong.
