Oil Painting Tips
Follow along in this oil painting video to see how I create my urban paintings.
I explain the grid system I use and other useful info to create a path of success for your own work. The medium I used in this painting consisted of a stand oil and Gamsol mixture. I used synthetic brushes in this painting and Windsor and Newton oil paints.
Thank you for watching the video.

Lakeside Plein Air - Painting Shadows
Переглядів 1,3 тис.2 роки тому
Come join me for a plein air oil painting adventure. You'll see in this landscape oil painting video how I handle shadows and dappled sunlight. The oil painting was painted at a local park near my house called Kineowatha Park. One interesting idea I experimented with was NOT using ultramarine blue. I only used cobalt blue and a bit of cerulean blue for this landscape. What a day it was for pain...
Plein Air kicked my a#@!
Переглядів 1,2 тис.2 роки тому
What a challenge I had in this video. I thought I was going to have a relaxing painting day by the lake, but the wind kicked up something fierce. It was still a good experience though. Not all plein days are perfect. What helped in this oil painting was my method of using a single color to block in the painting quick. This helped establish the foundation of the drawing and some average values e...
Develop your painting skills

In this video I show you how to improve your oil paintings. For this demonstration, I'm using an older plein air sketch that needed some attention. You'll learn how to make decisions on what changes are needed to improve your art and how to go about implementing the changes. You'll also learn how to be a more discerning artist that makes tough decisions that need to be made for the betterment o...
Don't Be Afraid

This video gives artists helpful advice on saving ruined paintings. I use my unfinished plein air oil paintings to demonstrate the ideas I use to improve my work. The key is to not be afraid. Take chances and be willing to learn how to get better! I can show you how. Thank you for watching the video. Are Artists Weird?
Переглядів 7242 роки тому
Sometimes I think I'm weird as an artist. My painting habits don't seem normal. What do I think is so weird? I have a habit of starting a lot of oil paintings, but it takes forever, it seems, to finish them. Do you have a painting habit that you think is odd? Leave them in the comments. In the end, it doesn't really matter how we work as artists as long as you're painting. Who's to say what is ...
Oil Painting Process
Переглядів 7862 роки тому
In this tutorial I will explain how I build my oil painting layers to add interest. This is my second session on the painting. In this session, I'm introducing the Oleopasto medium by Windsor and newton. It stiffens the paint and is useful for adding depth to the paint layers. Creating an oil painting is a process and can require multiple sessions to arrive at the vision you have in your head. ...
Oil Painting Block In Process
Переглядів 1,9 тис.2 роки тому
In this video, I demonstrate techniques I use to block in an oil painting. This oil painting demo was done from a photo I took on Monhegan Island, Maine. I loved the combination of shapes and felt it would make a great composition. The palette I used was: Titanium White, Ivory Black, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Light, Burnt Sienna, and Yellow Ochre. For this work in prog...
Maine Winter - oil painting demo
Переглядів 7843 роки тому
Learn useful techniques on how I began this winter oil painting of some Maine barns in this video. I show you ways to grid your canvas to get accurate proportions to fit your subject into your composition. I first started this 18 x 24 inch canvas with a wash of Ivory Black to get some values down and then worked over that with the following palette: Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, I...
Painting Boats - oil painting process
Переглядів 8453 роки тому
Get some tips on how I paint complicated subjects in oil paint. This 24 x 30 in. oil on canvas in-progress painting shows you my process of how I begin with the block in of color. The palette I used was: Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Ivory Black, Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Pale, and Cadmium Red Light. At this block in stage I only use paint with turps to thin it. The origina...
Capturing the Light - Plein Air
Переглядів 7413 роки тому
Learn plein air techniques on how to quickly capture the light in your subject using a value study. In this oil painting demonstration, I used Dioxazine Purple and Titanium White to create the study. By doing this, it allows me to quickly capture the changing light. Once this layer is dry, I can then apply the local color to match the values. Thank you for watching the video. If you have any qu...
Oil Painting Demo
Переглядів 8713 роки тому
In this studio oil painting demo ,I show you how I paint trucks in oil. The goal here was to simulate how I might paint them when plein air painting. Normally when I'm doing this type of subject in my studio, I'll create a careful drawing using the grid method before applying color. With this piece, I just dove right in and found the shapes as I went along. This is a 6 x 8 inch oil painting on ...
How to Paint Barns
Переглядів 2,4 тис.3 роки тому
This video explains how I use brushwork to add interest to my oil painting in order to engage the viewer more. These two barns in this plein air oil painting attracted me because of their contrasting colors. They are both red, but from totally diifferent areas on a color wheel. When painting structures plein air, it's important to NOT waiver on taking the time with your draftsmanship. It will m...
Painting Shadows Plein Air

Learn how I paint shadows plein air. Many times, artists can make their shadows too dark. This can happen more often when artists are using photos. This piece was painted on a 9 x 12 MDF panel. Thank you for watching the vid...

Experimenting with Casein - Studio Play Date
Bruce, I've just discovered you and love your painting and all the information you impart. As a video producer for 35 years and a beginner painter, I have some feedback that applies to most artists' videos on UA-cam. I would love to regularly slow down the process and hear your thoughts with every decision you make when, for example, picking a color on your palette and placing it on the painting, how you decide on a slight variation of white on a door or blue on a shadow. Too often artists talk about other very interesting insights about painting while we are watching you paint which distracts from understanding the process. We don't know what decisions you are making while painting which would help us know what we should be condisring while we paint. Voice over is more powerful if it is describing exactly what we are seeing. An example, if you talk about telephone poles, show examples of telephone poles, not while we are watching you choose what colors to paint a door or window. that said, I look forward to watching many more of your videos! Thanks!
Thank you so much for your feedback. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me. I agree about being more descriptive with my process. I'll try to do that on future videos.
Goodness gracious. The talent. I want to cry & donate my supplies. The light is so Hopperesque.
Artistic representations of cemeteries can be quite intriguing. They often capture a blend of beauty and solemnity, showcasing elaborate gravestones, serene landscapes, and the emotions associated with remembering loved ones. Each painting can evoke a sense of reflection on life, mortality, and the tranquility that these spaces can offer.
Beautiful thanks for sharing 💕❤️👍👍
Your welcome. I'm hoping to start posting new vids. before the end of the year.
A great work, the shadows are very Hopper-esque
Like your experimental spirit of which I share. Thank you Bruce;)
Very nice!
I love the scene over your shoulder also.
Hello again Bruce. I’ve been a care giver for two persons, my daughter who is recovering from surgery and my husband recovering from radiation and doctor appts. Not had much time to paint. Love seeing you again!
Bravo! Looks fantastic given windy conditions! Beautiful painting!! Thank you!🙏🏽
Do you eventually do a bigger version of the small painting?
I really like the safe environment factor of painting inside the car. These days you never can be too safe.
Looks great! I thought it looked great to start w also! I have a question. I’m new to all of this. Are you saying “plain air” when you describe this type of painting?
Nice demo! I have a preexisting tripod - do you have a suggestion for plein air accessories you showed? Paint pallet tray specifically that clips on? Also favorite umbrella?
Helpful video, particularly on how to order from Rosemary & Co and shipping to the U.S.. If you do another review of brushes, I'd have loved to see you playing with them with paint, so I could get a better idea of how you're using them, how they each perform, so I can better decide which I want.
Great idea. I'll keep it in mind for a future video.
@@habowskistudio2724 Thank you! I'd really love to watch that and am sure others would enjoy and benefit from it too.
It's rare to see content about urban paintings, love your channel. Thanks.
Thank you. I'm just trying to have content that I found lacking when I searched for information.
Your colours are amazing any clues what they are?
Do you know how to retouch painting with cold wax? the painting has been drying for few months
Hi Bruce! I’m just trying casein and I’m having a weird green residue on my brushes that doesn’t wash without using soap, it also colours my light colours… just wonder if you had that too? I’m not sure if it’s just one of the colours (I’m suspicious of the pthalo green) Love the kit! I really like the bag.
Hi...sorry for the late reply. I've never had that happen when I've used my casein paint....nor have I heard of anyone else. I suspect it's the green thalo. Very strong pigment. Try washing your brush very well.
Sorry - caught it later in the video
Thanks for watching the video , Karen.
I would have liked to see the details of how you checked the edges of the blocked out painting.
Thank you! Inspiring
You are so welcome!
I'm getting Edward Hopper vibes here. I just love this. Thank you for the demo.
Thanks for watching!
Love casein....and love your painting. Thanks for your great video. Hope you will do more videos with Casein painting!
I'm hoping to :) Also... gouache.
Do you like bristle brushes or softer synthetic brushes
Wonderful painting and great instruction. Looking forward to the next one.
Thank you so much. I hope to get back on track with more videos in 2024.
I love the hedge, it's a joy to watch you finish and do the details, the value changes. Thank you for giving us this video.
Your welcome. I appreciate you taking the time to watch it.
I love your teaching style. I studied art years ago in college but when it came to painting classes we were left to do our own thing with very little instruction in techniques. It's fun to learn from others now and then.
Thank you so much. I'm glad I can help other painters out there.
I can feel the hot sun on the house! Beautiful painting. Love your process. I never understand how to do the shingles or the clapboards. They are tough! You did a beautiful job on the roof!
It's been 9 months since your last video; really hope you keep producing more as I love your work and teaching style. Thanks!
I'm working on it, Chris :) Life gets busy. I'll be back.
Every tome i make a frame i cone back and watch your videos. Thank you.
Nice painting, but I cringe every time I see someone recording videos while driving. A friend of mine was killed by someone not paying attention to the road because they were using their phone.
Sorry to hear about your friend. I get where you're coming from. I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video.
As a self-taught landscape painter primarily, this was useful to show the technique of the hard lines of the structures. You have a very steady hand for those fine lines. I am jealous, but practice makes perfect. Nice composition as well. Thank you.
Good one, Bruce! Never go full impasto - got it!
Glad you enjoyed it.
I didn't think that building had an overhang on the side. Just on the front and back. You did miss the one over the garage doors tho i noticed. Either way, beautiful work! ❤❤ im trying to paint a building for the first time ever and your explanations of everything were super helpful thank you!
Glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching my channel.
Great composition!!
D'excellentes réalisations sur votre chaîne 👌.Une très bonne continuation pour la suite.
Thanks so much.
Are you making anymore videos?
Hi Rory - Yes...I plan to. I have some I have to edit and put together. Working full time eats into my art time. I had shoulder surgery,so hoping time off from will enable me to work on some more. Thanks for reaching out.
"Guess what? I'm an oil painter!" bahhaaaahaha I had a similar experience!
I would love to see a complete start-to-finish painting video.
Do you mean a literal 3 hr painting? I've thought of it, but thought it would be boring for viewers.
@@habowskistudio2724 Whatever you had in mind when you mentioned it in this video (I know it was from more than a year ago 🙂). Suggest you think about breaking it up into maybe 3 or 4 parts?.
Same! I’m a “super beginner “😂😂 so I could really use some start to finish guidance. I only work with acrylics right now and mostly cartoon style stuff. (Not to much realism).
Bruce, would you recommend someone with not great drawing skills (like me!) to use the grid method for drawing buildings on the canvas?
Hi Chris - Yes....I would recommend it. I think it will keep you organized when you're drawing your shapes. Eventually, over time, you won't need it at all. BUT....it is helpful for the big shapes to be where you want them in a composition. Then within those you can freehand educate guess the smaller shapes . Thanks for looking at my channel.
@@habowskistudio2724 Thanks Bruce, I appreciate it.
I constantly watch UA-cam videos of people oil painting, this is PERFECT. It’s perfectly explained and actually makes me want to paint. Thank you very much for posting this.
Wow, thank you!
great vid. How did the book light clamp work for you, it was too dim, or it was ok? I'm considering myself giving it a try for painting in twilight.
Sorry for the late reply. ...YT can be fickle about notifying me of comments. Thanks for watching. The light works enough.
Great video. Lots of useful information. And as always, a beautiful painting.
Thank you! I'm always trying to do my best with giving useful info.
Thank you for the new video. I enjoy watching the process. Love your paintings.
Thank you for your support. I'm glad you find them interesting.
Welcome back Bruce. You're always an inspiration. You now have me looking for those cool shapes made by cast shadows.
It's good to be back. It's been awhile. Thanks for taking a look.
I'm super excited to see a new video. I love your style. I'm looking forward to new videos. Thanks!
Thanks so much! I'm trying my hardest to get back into making more videos.
You have a unique style. Congratulations on developing this yourself! I love your work!
I appreciate you taking the time to watch it. Thank you so much :)
Wow glad i ran into this great video art info the process magically beautiful art
Nice to see you back on UA-cam. Love your work. All the best .
Thank you. It's been awhile since posting, but am glad to get back at it.
