  • Our recommendations for an entry level HEMA kit, prioritizing safety and longevity. We have a club discount with Neyman, which we declare in the interest of transparency, but this has not affected our review. We do not receive any favours from Neyman for reviewing their gear, we pay for every item we purchase from them, and we sometimes recommend other products over theirs.

      You're welcome. I think Neyman are a great company with some excellent products, and I really admire their spirit of innovation.

    One problem I've had with the Thokk gloves is that my thumb has slipped out of the glove several times during sparring. Usually it happenes when I suddenly take my hands off of the gloves, like grappling or one handed thrusts (my favourite) back of hand protection is decent, but a really hard strike will leave a moderate bruise. On the upside my thumb and index fingers are very safe and the fingertips are protected, unlike the spes heavy gloves.

    Thanks for the video; understanding all the pieces-parts and how various options can work together can be a steep learning curve. I also appreciated seeing someone like myself, who is not as svelte as the sample JF jacket in the SPES photos. Regarding sizing - since the jacket fits over the padded pants, chest protector, and the gorget, did you take measurements for the jacket over those pieces of clothing, or do the SPES sizing standards take those into consideration?

      You're welcome. I bought the SPES Jessica Finley jacket before I had other gear, so I didn't take anything else into consideration. However the gorget fits fine, and the jacket fits ok over the PBT breeches. I do find a chest protector is a tight fit however, and I would definitely recommend taking measurements while wearing any gear you want to put underneath.

      Got it. I find that I have been approaching the "protection problem" from the outside-in as well as from the inside-out, as various topics and more class exposure brings things to mind. I am a member of Capital KdF in the Washington DC area and have begun the study of the rapier. The club has a stockpile of AF masks for members to buy, so that part was an easy starting block for a beginner. The other elements of the outfit, some of which require knowing how a given company's sizing runs, and all of it being bought online, has been more of a challenge. Again, thanks for this informative video.

    Wow Thx! i am just about to start Longsword.
    This Video is super useful to me. I got a question though regarding the protectors for chest, but also arms, elbows, chins..There is a lot of skateboard and motocross stuff which is loads cheaper. Do you have u any experience with such non - HEMA specific protectors?

      @lionhearthistoricaleuropea1186  7 років тому

      Yes, some of them are ok but some are not, take Knee protector for example, most of them don't protect the side of the joint which is weak spot.

    would muay thai shin guards work?

    • @lionhearthistoricaleuropea1186
      @lionhearthistoricaleuropea1186  7 років тому

      Yes they would, but with varying degrees of comfort and protection, depending on the model you buy. It's always best to buy HEMA specific equipment. The best leg protection I have used is the Neyman leg protection and the PBT leg protection which attaches to the PBT breeches (the breeches have proper complete knee protection built in). It's especially important to protect the side of the knee in HEMA, and most sports shin guards don't do that at all.

      thanks, I ask because I already have some shin guards and I was hoping I could use them instead of buying new HEMA specific shin guard.

    Are PBT's higher prices for Europe a political issue? I live in the EU and it seems weird to me, since I can't figure out the reason, could please anybody explain it? if anybody knows the reason.

    • @lionhearthistoricaleuropea1186
      @lionhearthistoricaleuropea1186  7 років тому +2

      It's mainly an EU tax issue. Here in Taiwan we can buy PBT gear without the EU tax, so we actually buy it at a cheaper price even after paying shipping. You can see on their website that PBT provides prices both with tax and without tax, and the prices with tax are for EU residents.

      Lionheart Historical European Swordsmanship Oh okay, thanks for the answer, looking for alternatives won't be very hard I think, having Neyman and Spes around. Thanks for the video too, it was really useful!

    Remember folks, these are euros--not quite as "cheap" as they claim to be.

    • @lionhearthistoricaleuropea1186

      As explained in the video, there's really no such thing as good, cheap HEMA protection.

      Since the prices in this video ARE quoted in Euros, they're EXACTLY as "cheap" as they're quoted to be.
