BUILDING A BUDGET FLATBED

- In this epidode were making Bessie look like a truck again! Were building a flatbed with inexpensive, easy to find materials. Just some steel tubing, steel channel, and some pressure treated 2x10 boards!

Bessie is looking good, I like the bed. Id like to make 2 suggestions, D - Rings to make tying or strapping down a load easier. 2nd cap the ends of the square tube, over time rust will bleed out of the open square tube and it won’t look as good. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! And yes! I’m considering D-rings or maybe rub rails so I can make some removable bed sides in the future. Either way, she needs some tie down points for sure! And I completely forgot to cap the ends haha but I’m thinking I’ll run some wires through the tubes for extra lighting before I cap them. Maybe I’ll make a video about it when I do!
@@ChucksCustoms why didn’t you make a headache rack
Lpp
@@ChucksCustoms really stake pockets is all you need to put the removable sides on.
That pickup looks good, you'll never go wrong with the old square body Chevy!
Hell, you'll never go wrong with Chevy. They are so easy to work on, that's why everyone buys them😆🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
@@timothygeiger8271 exactly what I was thinking
Great video. The flat bed looks great. The only things I would add are some tie down points and a cab protection from loads on the bed.
and prep the metal before welding
Not welding to the frame would be another one
I think it's a great start to a very functional truck bed. I'd personally like to see a headache rack myself. I have had flatbeds both ways. A headache rack is a life saver.
Thinking on doing this to mine, with some extras and more wheel clearance.... I built one like it years ago, about this high and it always rubbed with a load of wood or hay on it.. funny we found the same video.. 🤣🤣
How is it a life-saver?
@@brycebaquol233 have you ever hauled anything?
@@BoringFisherman I haul weekly and rarely have anything that endangers my rear windshield if that is what you are referring to as the "life-saving" part.
@@brycebaquol233 first time you hit something or some idiot throws fire wood in it, you will be glad you have it.
Really like the simplicity of this build. A lot of flat bed build videos are just overdone and make it look too complicated. Good job!
I have an old 1989 Chevy Cheyenne 1 ton Dually with a great cab and frame but the service box has seen better days. I'm considering a Flatbed to replace the old rusty box. Your video is inspiring. Appreciate you sharing the build process. Looks great.
Headache rack would be the cherry on top! Awesome build 🙌
A flatbed makes total sense. The modular versatility is limited to your imagination. Thank you kind sir for sharing all of the little fabricating tricks... the finished product looks sharp!
The open tubing should have caps covering the openings and the lack of stake pockets makes load securement difficult as well as the inability to short side panels to prevent things from rolling or sliding off the bed . I missed seeing how you handled the fuel filler kneck . Some sort of headache rack to protect the back of the cab . A place for a gooseneck ball would be handy . A step or some means of climbing up on to the bed would be helpful . A storage box to secure chains, binders and ratchet straps as well as a box for tools . Last of all the truck now needs mudflaps to be legal . I also didn't see where you intend to put your license plate and the license plate light . Reflective tape down the sides and across the back would a nice touch . Maybe another video may be in order to rectify those issues I brought up .
It is a nice start of a functional working flatbed .
you should build one bro...lets see it!
You made it look so easy, nice workmanship and details. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to the next step.
Phenomenal build and I like how you repurposed 12:26 part of the bed .
Cheers 🇨🇦
Wow, I been gone way too long but I am getting a bing following of this great build... I remember "Bessie" coming out of a death throw to be a truck someone would be proud to own Chuck.. I see the four wheel video is also up so thanks to you an yours for these very entertaining videos
one of my favorite diy flatbed styles I've seen so far ,nice work
That looks really good, I like how you did the taillights and tied them together with the old bed material.
Thank you! I thought it would be nice to incorporate an original piece of Bessie into the new stuff!
Loved it. Reminded me of helping my dad do that in 1963.
You should coat the under side of the boards with the same stuff you put on the back of the truck it will help the boards. And cover the top with total boats brand clear marine epoxy. 👌
Looks awesome. Easy to remove too. I agree with other people you should make a headache rack but make it easily removable when you don’t need it and it won’t be in the way.
Quality. I like the trick you did at 8:28. Instead of having to fight yourself to keep the piece up.. also like how you cut your angles. Great job. You made me want to go buy a welder now lol
And now to add some chrome strips on the bottoms of the mud flaps. Along with some groovy tool storage boxes under the bed. Maybe some stake pockets and some removable sides and, of course, the nifty tailgate/cargo gates. Excellent video, by the way.
Very good deck, beautiful, I really like that you didn't talk too much and actually showed. Thanks for the video.
Super excited to see Bessie again! Keep them coming!
Thanks! Will do!
Nice work. Only thing missing are stake pockets on the outer frame rail. The tapered rear was a great special feature
Is the taper for a specific reason or strictly asthetic
Nice work love the tail light layout and skewed corners
Always look forward to your videos Chuck! Love the channel and your work!
Thank you! It feels good uploading regularly again!
Awesome job! Looks great.
This is the flatbed I am considering for a similar chevy 1/2 ton I am building. Yours is one of the cleanest looking beds I have seen. If I may ask, what is your total cost in materials? Are you planning on adding a "headache" rack in the future? How about mudflaps or wheel wells in the rear to protect the underside of your bed? I know that by your title your intended to build this at least cost, but now are you considering any updates or additions, such as running lights on the sides of the bed, towing mirrors, and the like? Thanks for sharing your video, and best wishes on your future projects.
Love it! Looking forward to seeing the 4x4 conversion!
Thank you!
Me too
looks great,,, head board and trailer hitch .. for the next budget build lookin forward to it.
Looks fantastic. Around here they will nail ya for not having a light over the plate, but I absolutely love how this turned out.
Awesome build! Might consider putting a Mansfield bar (bumper) or a hitch on the back. Maybe a headache rack as well.
I was thinking the same about a headache rack... And maybe some post pockets on the outside rails for removable sides.
I was thinking the same thing about a bumper - it can both save lives and double as a step to climb onto the bed.
Great job! Looks fantastic!
RIGHT ON GR8 JOB,
IM BUILDING ANOTHER 1950 GMC FLATBED. THANKS 4 SHARING.
Great design, and build!
Well done!
Man the possibilities are endless as to what you do with this truck. I would weld brackets on the side frames with ratchet straps so you can haul all sorts of stuff
That turned out great. And I learned something too. 👏👍
Really nice welds. Great job.
Absolutely first class, you have great skills man. 👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Awesome build, thanks for the share 🔥🔥
Looks great. I'd weld some caps on the ends of the box section to prevent internal corrosion. Install some wheel arches to prevent the underside of the bed from rotting or being cakes with dirt. D rings or stake pockets would add versatility to the beds use and abilities to carry different loads
Amazing work!!! Love it.
I love your flat bed modification man.
Came out really nice really nice. I am a big fan of the. Because I started doing that with every truck that I owned. If it wasn't a flatbed I converted into dump body.
Lookin good 👍
Need some tool boxes underneath, a bumper and hitch and a headache rack.
Fine job son! That's a better bed than the factory one when it was a new truck!!!
Look so good ,Chuck keep up and thank for you ideas bless you
Nice looking 👍👍👍 the job was ok 👍👍👍
I need one of those beds with stake holes so I can put sides and backs on to haul stuff. Good work.
Looks great! Put your headache rack and under storage box and stake pockets!
Looks great! Any idea of before and after weight difference?
This is awesome, man. Well done! Inspires me to want to learn to weld.
What a wonderful job and the welding is so neat
Dude yes looks awesome
Looks awesome. Now I want to do this.
You just gave me an idea for my 99 Dodge 👍🏻
Good job it looks EXCELLENT
Ole Bessie is looking amazing. Can't believe the transformation from what she was when you got her. I dog the flatbed.... one suggestion/heads up. You might want to put a gap between those boards. As they get moisture, they swell and will "cup" buckle due to the lack of space. Cant wait to see the 4x4 swap... gonna be awesome! Greetings from Oregon.
I appreciate it! And that’s a great suggestion because I’ve seen it happen on a lot of docks here in Florida! I was surprised though because I had to remove them for the 4x4 conversion so they were off for a while, and when I went to put them back on I realized they actually shrunk a little bit so the bolts were difficult to get back it. I think the sun may have dried them out a bit, but she ended up going back together with a little persuasion lol
Wet PT wood always shrinks.
Oh man! That turned out great!!
Really looks great!
Awesome job my friend looks great LP 67 C10
First time looking at your videos and i enjoyed watching. It would be great to have list of the materials used in the build.
I have a D-21 with an old rusted box, I would like to build a flate bed.
Thanks for making this video.
Great work!! Looking forward to the 4x4 swap
I appreciate it! That episode should hopefully be out within the next few weeks 😎
Neato!! Building stuff kicks ass! 😀
Looks good, enough room under the bed for a few storage boxes if you decide too , for rachet straps or bungie cords.. Nice job.
Great fab skills!
Nice work. Bessie looks really good. Great job. Can't wait for the next video. Keep up the great work an videos
Thank you!
Amazin!!! Awesome work!
..... Great Flatbed build.
Nice conversion and video.
looks good ! I like the fact you added steel to the underneath and sides. I did one just straight wood. Looked ok but that I Like good job!
Awesome job!
Solid work!! 👍👍
Dope project! I need to get into welding, pretty awesome what you can do!
BRO YOU ARE A BEAST! GOD BLESS YOU!
I like the way you did it man! cool to see
Looks great. I'd dd a backboard and mesh window cover, and add a tool box on each side behind the rear tyres.
All those comments make me wonder if they would be able to do better. That was spectacular work without criticism. just wow good job
Clean and simply perfect
Skills...you made it look easy. Very nice.
Dang man thats a badass look...it looks factory great job
Bro that is a cleeeeean bed! Great job!!👍🏼
Just got out of the military and hope to use my GI Bill to go to welding school! Thanks for the Entertainment!
Excellent job buddy
Hey! I've been binging watching your whole build looks excellent! Was wondering if you had a material list of everything used on the bed? I need to build a flatbed for my nissan hardbody pickup!
I just built one for my 1990 Nissan hardbody. 3x1.5 rectangular tubing for rails and outside frame. 1.5 square tubing for cross members. 7 feet by 5 and a half feet. Works really well.
Nice looking truck,
Greetings from Vancouver Island British Columbia Canada!
Well done!😎

*Excellent work 🎉*
Awesome truck and love the flat bed it looks great 👍
now all the hits go direct to chasis! nice....!
Chasis already damaged by welding😮
Awesome job man. Wow. I love it.
👍👍. Heck yeah!! Now make a guard for the back of the cab.. 4wd will be cool
Looks pretty good. I've got a rusty bed on mine I'm thinking of replacing similar to this but looking at ideas yet. Think I want stake pockets on the sides though. Or tie down points at least. Its a nice build though, may just have to watch the other vids in the series.
Never watched your channel before. I can tell that you are an actual welder/fabricator after 30 seconds haha. Nice work!
Cool 😎 🆒️ 😎 🆒️ Well done. Greetings from germany Christoph 👋 👋 👋 👋 👋
Love watching a plan come together!! Great job!
I love that build bro. You done your thing on that one.
