What a time capsule, the proverbial
"owned by a little ol' lady'
Car!
THE MAYOR OF LAKE GEORGE N Y HAD A RED AND WHITE FOUR DOOR HT 78 LTD LIKE THIS. PURCHASED NEW FROM EARL's FORD LG NY.
Remindes me of why I like Canon so much. The cars were furnished by FoMoCo, and these cars were everywhere on that show. And all were just a few years old. The true celebrities of Canon.
Is this the show you're thinking of? www.imdb.com/title/tt0066636/
These cars were pretty much on every tv show in the 70’s that Ford provided the vehicles for.
@@marka1422 yep that's the one. I watch an episode almost everyday on me tv. He drives an ltd once in a while but mainly a Mark lV.
@@fordmavericksosx3569 true. I'm sure glad as all hell get out that Bo and Luke Duke didn't use Fords. 😳
@@styldsteel1 --Okay! I haven't seen Cannon since it was on back in the 70s. I only remembered his Lincoln Mark IV. I didn't remember any other car. One thing I like about watching old TV shows is looking at the cars of the day; especially, those of the 50s, 60s, 70, and 80s when cars had style and design. Thanks!
Long ago I had a dark green one.
I still remember the sounds the pneumatic heater and airco switches made. Loved it.
A castle on wheels it was.
So did I mine had a white top Emerald green
Glad to see these 70's classics, are finally getting the love they deserve. Problem is, not many survived, the rust belt and the demo derby's. Very luxurious and good looking car, even with the giant bumpers.
I hope they have video for a 71 - 76 G.M. Clamshell Wagon on here one of these days. It doesn't matter too much to me if it's a Buick, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, or Pontiac. Many of them had an Automatic Tailgate, while others had the Manual Tailgate. The Manual Tailgate ones still had the automatic window that went into the roof, though.
Austin Lucas it’s sad that feature never made the downsized models of 1977
@@saganich74 --I lived in that era as a teenager. Our family had a '75 Caprice Estate wagon with the automatic tailgate and window. While I'm no expert on the mechanics, I have a feeling that the mechanics of the hideaway gate and window required more room than the '77 downsized GM wagons would allow, thus they went back to the traditional fold-down gate that also opened like a door with the handle with the window going down into the gate. Dad kept that '75 wagon until '81 when he traded in for a Chevette, if you can imagine. I don't remember why he did that, but he did. I loved the big Chevy wagon, though. :)
@@saganich74 In a way, yeah, although the 77 - 90 G.M. (and 79 - 91 Ford and Mercury models) are easier to service if something goes wrong. The 71 - 76 models are also prone to both roof rot near the doors, and rear side window channel rot. I still like them, but those issues pushed them far out of my league for a purchase any time soon.
thats why you go to the Western US to find them
where rust hardly happens😉
Every single 1970's crime drama tv show featured this car! The hubcaps always came off during the chase scenes!
My father was a commercial traveller and would get a new car every 2 years...for 1976 i actually talked him out of Chev and into a Ford. He would give me a budget for options. I could afford to upgrade to an LTD Brougham and nothing more. Just the Brougham package, He loved it. The ride and the extra luxurious interior. I got my license that year and drove the heck out of it over dirt roads and on freeways.....dark brown with tan vinyl roof. WHAT A CAR.
When he opens the driver door that sound brings back memories. All older cars sounded that way.
I own a car from the same model year and my doors do not sound like that.
A friend of mine owned the twin to this car in 1981. I had a blue 1974 model with the 400, which was the last year before a catalytic converter and unleaded gas. One of my college English professors summed it up well when she saw the car: "That's _obscene_ !"
Had new two door in 1977. For the era a out standing automobile. Thumbs up 👍
This gold Ford LTD from 1975 is a really beautiful car! I bought his car from the movie in 2019 in Germany from a dealer. It still exist in wonderful condition and drives perfectly! Thanks this guy in the movie for the good maintenance.
I must admit, as a kid I hated what these big cars looked like at the time, but now it's pure nostalgia. It's true that these were driven to the ground and then suddenly they were all off the road. Having said that, the car is spectacular. There's mint and then there's MINT. That one is both!
they made so many ... that's all you saw
@@82ghall People also bought so many. They weren't considered Gampa's cars yet.
@@aaronwilliams6989 just a good strong dependable car . that you could work on yourself with out a laptop ... lol
@@82ghall yep
Looks like the metallic gold top Gibson Les Paul color of the late 50s.
Yes 🎸 😈
Love that color with cream colored p90's :)
Pearly Gates.
Yeah it do.. would look good in the back 2. You could trade one 4 a few of these.
I' ve got a similar LP'style Guitar that has a color between copper and gold, and look the same☺️
What a big gold beauty. I love it. 😍 Last year I saw a LTD in Tuscany in Italy with German registration. Metallic blue with white roof. Wow.
Those goldish mustard/maize colors were really popular in the seventies, kind of went along with all the olive green/avocado tones that were around at the time. And the LTD Brougham was the middle trim level offered at the time. There was a base LTD, an LTD Brougham, and then the top-of-the-line LTD Landau, which had more baroque trim and covered headlights.
That would be the car I would go for at any auto show. I like cars that I can relate to because they were part of my past.
Just so odd to see survivors like this that no one ever thought to preserve. I live in Cleveland, and I HAVE seen one of these recently driving around. It's powder blue and rusted to within an inch of its life.
Lol shout out to Cleveland ✌️
I lived there from 95-06 and saw some surprisingly old iron still running around , and yes with alot of rust.
Rust was a real problem for cars in snow states in the 1970's, especially when
you add road salt. Cars didn't have the kind of rust protection they have now
@@aaronwilliams6989
Well , from say the mid/late 90s until the early 2000s they were getting a grasp.
But i look at all the unsealed seams along the rocker panels on the 2016 Ford work truck and I wonder how long it'll be before I can put my foot thru the floor.
@@MrTheHillfolk Oh YEAH. I remember that. I had a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix.
Great car mechanically, but a sorry body rusted to hell and back in the very
same spots you mentioned. The door would've fallen off had I been able to
drive it just another 6 months beyond the 12 1/2 years I had it already.
@@MrTheHillfolk But my '08 car, same make and model, much better body and no
rust to be found. Like new.
Thats an nice color for the car it looks like it was parked in a barn or a garage for long time im glad its original shape add more value to it!!
She’s a beaut!!!!!
When I was in middle and high school those cars were everywhere! They offered a rebate if you bought a new one, and it worked! But, we drove a 71 Galaxie 500 four door.
Awesome vehicle! Brings back memories of having to push those big cars into the gas stations during the oil crisis. Lol
That's how some people remember them. I was just a kid then.
@@aaronwilliams6989 me too
Seeing these cars my dad drove just fill me with nostalgia. As a family of 6, mom dad and us 4 kids we could easily fit in these cars. We loved going thru western Canada. Some of my best memories as a kid.
Nice. My grandfather bought a new 1975 LTD, his one and only new car. He was still driving it when he died in 1980.
Holy heck, I was born in 81 some of my first memories where from the back seats of one of these driving between Ohio to Virginia to visit family every summer. Maybe the pinstripes are the only thing different between my grandpa's and this one.
Wonderful! That's not just a car, that's a piece of art. And the place is wonderful too. ❤️
I owned a 4 door '77 LTD Landau in 1986. Very smooth and quite riding car. My car was a shade of yellow. It had the same interior color and fabric. My car had 400 V8 just like this car. It was a gas hog!! Thanks for posting.!!
Very nice looking ride you have there!!
I bought a 76 Landau Coupe 2 years ago from the original! owner. It's red with red leather and red half Landau top. Also has the fender skirts and color matched centers in the hubcaps. And of course hideaway headlights....
Freaking love car to death. Drives so nice down the road, not a rattle to be heard even after 44 years!
Never had one, but drove my sisters 1975 Ford Grand Torino with similar power train. I loved the car. This one looks beautiful. I once had service call at a guys home that collects cars. He had one like this. He described it as a sofa on wheels.
Memories of watching the streets of san francisco with my dad🤣🤣👍👍
Good lord this brings back some memories. A friend of mine bought this as a first car, near mint condition and low mileage and same color as this. We were teens and daily drove it around to different skateboard spots, etc. I recall it was a massive pig on fuel. We sometimes filled up two full tanks a day just from local around town driving. Trunk was MASSIVE. We used to put full size parking blocks in the trunk and only maybe a couple of inches stuck out. I still
Miss that car dearly
Awesome, my first car i bought in 1984 was a 76 LDT with a 400 big block, drove that thing till it died..
In September 1974, when I turned 16, I needed a car to conduct the driving test to get my Drivers License. My Dad was selling Fords at the time and he met me at the DMV after school from which I had walked from. He pulled up with a brand new 1975 Ford LTD identical to this car, except it was red and only had 12 miles on it.
It was a boat and the guy who conducted the test was quite impressed. Anyhow, I passed the test and got my license.
Thanks for a trip down memory lane.
LOL My cousins' family bought the wagon version new, in pale yellow. Their kids referred to it as "The Cheesewagon." Very few of these left; Fords in the seventies had serious rust issues! Thanks for sharing Dennis.
BTW, the owner needs to get some bell bottoms and a polyester shirt.
In all fairness, all automakers had rust issues
I got Mercury Marquis from 77. Just like a sister model of that LTD. We rolling easy and free :)
Beautiful car, and what a great find! I don't know why folks keep calling cars like this "land yachts, etc.". It's just a nice full-sized car. You don't get such a nice ride or comfortable seats in vehicles these days, which is a shame. You take a long road trip in a car like this LTD and you're not sore or worn out at your destination. Glad to see it being kept original.
I agree; and I wouldn't even consider this in "land yacht" territory. My Dad had one, and it was just a nice, reasonable, dependable car.
ALL OF THESE FULLSIZE " LAND-YACTHS OF THE MID 70'S WERE " THE BEST" ON THE ROAD BACK THEN & STILL ARE TODAY..
Just think how cool those barges would've been if the gas mileage was a little
better. BOY!!
When back in the day a Working Man could afford a NICE CAR!!
My Grandfather had a brown one just like this. He was a member of a CB club in the 70s and 80s. I remember we were riding in that car in summertime and the frost covered the vents from the AC being so cold on that car.
It drives like a living room that's about right. I grew up driving my dad's Mercury Rideau 500, and my uncle's Grand Marquis. Floating all over the highway, but plenty of power, and you could watch the gas needle go down when you floored it.
MyClassicCarTV, I was 16 years old when this car came out this Gold Metallic looks nice Thank You for posting.
Our first family station wagon was a black 65 LTD with red interior and dual facing rear seating. Three small children loved riding back there. The next Country Squire was a 71 LTD in CANDY APPLE RED. Both were great family cars; both made easy Summer Main trips.
That has got to be one pleasant car to drive on a long road trip.
I'll give you Americans this. You did make some beautiful cars back in the 60's and 70's
I remember these cars when I was a kid in school. These were good heavy cars. Quite a good seller and very popular with salesman as my friends old man had one. These cars looked good, nothing like the generic junk Detroit is cranking out today.
I've owned a 70 LTD, 2 72s, a 74 and a 78 ALL LTDs. Good cars.
My dad had a 76 ltd 4 door in dark brown. 400 ci 4 barrel. Loved it
The Ford 400 only came with a 2 barrel .
I remember seeing tons of these even way into the 1980s.
Time Capsule in perfect shape, unbelievable...
Ahh so there's my crown vic's great great grandfather. Thanks a lot Dennis.
Love these. Reminds me of every 70's cop show.
You are very lucky person.. U have gold from the history with you... One can buy any new car in this days but no one can get what you have.. Love from India
This is a nice Ford. We bought new in 76 a LTD Landau, 4dr., 460 and skirts. In its day it would run pretty good with its massive 202hp. The quality of these cars were not so good. Windshield wipers failed the first week, the engine would load up when starting (auto choke) and blow soot through the dual exhaust, we blew the Firestone radials off before 12,000 and at 60,000 the freeze plugs blew. It was; however, a very comfortable car and could get 17mpg at a steady 64 (the cops would typically allow 64 during the 55 speed limit days on the interstate). In town mileage was miserable but the comfort was nice. Thanks for the post.
Optional Gold Glow paint and a valino grain vinyl roof. Optional luxury wheel discs, 50/50 seats, cornering lights, deluxe group, decor group, bodyside moldings, and many more options. Very nice.
My first car was a '71 ford ltd 2 door hardtop no posts with the 400 engine in blue. Loved that car
Lovely car. I have a 4 door LTD Landau sedan in the same colour. I think it is called Yellow Gold? The 400 cubic inch engine is a small block not a big block. The 460 was available and that is the big block engine. Just a tip. - never close the hood by pushing down in the centre like on the film. You will end up denting it. Use two hands on the top side of the power bulge in the hood. Great car. Thanks for the episodes.
Calling a 400 Ford a small block is a contradiction in terms. Yes it has the same bore spacing as the 289/302, but the actual block is much larger due to the long 4 inch stroke. The deck height of the 289/302 is 8.2 inches. The 351M/400 has a deck height of almost 10.3 inches which is similar to most makes big block engines during the 60's/70's. I had a 1976 Country Squire with the 400 and knew it was part of Fords small block family. The first time I opened the hood I thought "damn, that can't be a small block, it's huge". Enjoy your big Ford, I wish I still had my Country Squire.
Sure is nice, no one would even think of restoring a car like this. There are a lot of similar cars like this near Edmonton Alberta stashed away that need some love and a buyer.
I use to have one ! It was a 4 door & had that exact engine 351/M 400 cu Cleveland big block ! What a ride
One more benefit. When not being driven, the rear bumper makes an excellent park bench.😎 🧨
What a gorgeous car, that guy was very lucky to get it.
Since I am 70 years old I remember cars like this from when I was young. This nice looking car comes from a generation of cars that are no longer made. These full size cars from years past were characterized by these things, they were a large full size, they had a large V8 engine under the hood, they were a body on a frame construction, and they were rear wheel drive with a solid axle. They also had a smooth quiet comfortable ride. When the last Ford Crown Victoria was made, it was the end of cars like this being made.
I have an all original 1977 Gran Marquis and my 1977 Country Squire. Love those cars!
I worked on those when they were new! So im old!
Well preserved - amazing! Really looks "brand new".
and the cars in good shape 2
I have a '78 4 Door base LTD I picked up around 5 years ago after scouting eBay for a long time for a good price. I love mine. They're absolutely right about never seeing them anymore. I don't think I've seen one by me (NY) in the "wild" since the mid 2000s besides my own. Mine has the rarer cost saving option of being powered by a 351W with a C4 over a 351M/400 and a C6.
Mine was also owned by an older person and had the cut out shag carpet in the front seats!
Side note: These things love to rust. Probably another reason why you don't see them anymore. Mine came with only ~31k miles and a factory undercoating and I've still had to disassemble sections of it, sand it down to metal and rust proof it due to spots popping up.
My dad had a 4 door gold Ltd just like that. It was really nice.
Will that put a HUGE smile on my face thanks a lot Dennis, very nice car.
Nothing can beat a couch car I miss mine.
love the old Fords
My Friends Step Father had a Green 78 Ford LTD Just like that one. He was a Big Guy so he loved it.
I remember seeing him driving it with a Cigar and a smile from ear to ear.
I used to own one of these, white with blue interior. I drove the wheels off her and she never ever failed me. Only ever did a water pump. Went to Madi grah in it, Key west, Niagara Falls, Boston and Pittsburgh with everything in between. Great highway cruiser. Sold it to a kid and it still ran like a champ. Great find.
MAN. You must really miss that car. I sure would.
@@aaronwilliams6989 yes I do. It was a sold new Florida car with zero rot and a great a/c unit. I was alot younger then and it was one of 3 cars I owned at the time plus a Triumph motorcycle, I just couldn't afford to keep them all with insurance so I kept the 1965 mustang and the 1966 Chevy Caprice super coupe and the bike. Ahhhhhh if only I had just put a few of them away............
@@randallbates9020 I hear you.
I had one of these a few years back the same color and everything. Mine was a 77. Mine was as good a shape as this one. It even had the original ford kleenex box with a new box of Ford kleenexes that had never been opened. I didn't even know ford had them. Someone my mother knew had it and didn't want it so they gave it to me and moved to Wyoming I think. I loved that old car. My son borrowed it and an 18 wheeler ran him into a bridge and nearly killed him and totaled the car. 18 wheeler never came back or slowed down... Thank God, my son made it through the wreck!!!
The most super LTD I ever saw in a long time the truest survivor yet to come I always love older cars since my first ride in my grandfather’s 1998 Pontiac Trans Sport also she’s smokin’ hot!
Wow! Look at that piece of history!!
That car remember my dad he owned the same model and year lot of good memories!
Barnaby Jones always drove two door LTD's. Those cars were a dime a dozen back in the day, sure wish I had one now.
These were certainly big & comfortable, my uncle had a new 75 LTD Landau, it had hidden headlights & fender skirts, I thought it was fancier than a Cadillac!! 😷
@Ricoville my uncle went all out when he bought that car, it had a saddle brown velour interior that was very comfortable & it was so quiet inside!
My dad used to have a ‘73 Mercury Montego Brougham with, according to the original option list, ‘gold metallic glamour paint’. It looked just like this color👍
The car that thinks it's a house, or the house that thinks it's a car!!!! Take your pick!!!!! 1:48............I bet "Diamond Girl", "Get Closer", & "Summer Breeze" sound SO AWESOME in this car!!!!!!!!
Funny. I was showing my son these LTDs earlier then this video pops up. My folks used to have a light blue 1976 LTD 4 door. I think it either had the 460 or 400 in it. Not sure. It was huge, roomy comfortable and floated down the road. I would love to find me one even one of the coupes would be nice. I really love these cars.
My dad would love a car like this.
From new we had a 1974 Ford Galaxy 500 2dr, same as this, just different trim. It was scrapped by the summer of 1979. completely rusted out, interior falling apart, then the engine died. These are unicorns now, not because they were ‘used up’ but because they were crap, I would love to get one again!
Thank you for showing totally original cars like this. They're always the most interesting!
My uncle had one of these , a four door two tone green and fully loaded . His criteria for a car purchase was if it could hold two full sets of golf clubs in the trunk .
I love these LTDs! That ‘76 looks amazing!
The Land Yacht 8000 had retractable tuna fins and an optional sail for those long hauls. LTD = Land Tuna Delight. They say Charlie owned one! 😅
Grandpa towed a 1976 Airstream with this very car. We’d also fit a Honda CT90 in the backseat- I still fit back there
I had a 1970 LTD coupe that I bought from the dealership that ordered it new. I bought it in 1982 with 70k miles after the original owner traded it in for a new one. I drove that car for 11 years. Wonderful car to drive. These cars are undervalued.
Anyone else notice the factory weld area in the c-pillar under the vinyl? What an awesome setting for a car show.
Love them old Ltd's would love to own that car!!👍
Suh-weeet!
Beautiful old boat! 😁👍
Very similar to my 76 Mercury. I'm in love!
This would make Dean of Cold War Motors drool away :P
My thoughts exactly! I wonder if Scott would give up any love for this example? He hates them as much as Dean loves them.
I leaned to drive in one of those in the early 80s!!
that's a cool car! I've been a huge fan on the 76 Eldorados for so long now, admiring from afar (here in the UK), never knew about the Ford LTD until today! super cool
These were really good riding cars.
you were so lucky to find it!
Wow- That car is in unbelievably beautiful original condition - I'm somewhat surprised to see that it was ordered with the tow package - Maybe the woman's husband ordered it that way, with the intention of pulling a trailer, but never used it for that. This car was obviously very carefully maintained by its owner, and was probably not driven at all during inclement weather- Even the engine compartment looks almost showroom new.For those who appreciate a soft boulevard ride, this is the car for them.It would likely be a fabulous go anywhere cruiser -the only issue is that fuel economy will be very poor by today's standards. These were fairly commonly seen up until about the early '90's.They are not often seen today, especially in this amazing condition - Great to see it👍👍👍👍✅✅✅
Mileage was horrible.
Love those old land yachts, that’s pretty much what I grew up driving. My brother had found a 77 or 78, big Ford station wagon, I can’t remember whether it was a LTD wagon or what but it was a huge car, anyway he got it for his wife, then he took it and had a Earl Schieb or Scheib?, 100 dollar special paint job they ran, Fire engine red put on it, and I believe it had the 400 big block in it too! Hell that big of car you needed a big engine in it ! Anyways, that wagon was a real nice, low mileage vehicle too, probably as nice as this car !
Family had a '78 LTD Country Squire with the 400. Smooth as silk and super reliable. Expedition EL is the modern version of that car.
Brings back some memories.
My father bought the same car, same gold color (except for the hub caps).
My mother was so mad, she hated the car, especially the color.
The engine was a 351M400
I borough the car several times.
Smooth ride.
Thank you for sharing my grandparents had one but it was blue
My dad had a 77 LTD exactly like this one except had the pop up headlights and wire wheel hubcaps.
