  • Paul Johnston provides a comprehensive review of the 2001 E1 model Kawasaki Ninja, thoroughly evaluating its performance and handling while drawing insightful comparisons with its predecessors and primary competitors.
Noteworthy enhancements include a significant reduction in overall weight to an impressive 183kg. Furthermore, the engine performance has been augmented, boasting a robust 144bhp output. This improvement results in an exceptional power-to-weight ratio, solidifying the 2001 E1 as a standout in its class.

First Ninja was the GPz900 1984...I had a GPz900 1989 model a few years. I have now a ZX9R -01 with 58000+ miles on it and the cam chain has no problem...in fact, the bike NEVER had a problem...EVER. Its parked in Greece, where I go for holiday every year. I live in Sweden, where I ride the ZZR1400 -14. So coming from the 1400 to the Ninja every year, besides the difference in power...the Ninja holds its own. It's plenty plenty fast if you let it rip over 7000rpm, it travels long distances very comfortably, has no excessive fuel consumption, and on twisty roads its a big bag of pure fun. The ZX9, 98 and onwards, is one of the most underrated, bikes ever made. It kind of got forgotten between more pure blood like the R1, Fireblade, Gixxers....

Top Gun bike not a Ninja in Europe though.

@@HalfdeadRider It does not really matter, because the FIRST Ninja was the GPz900 1984. And we had all seen the Ninja logo anyway, so we called it a Ninja. Also then you knew you weren't talking about the aircooled bikes, when you said a Ninja 900. People bought the Ninja logo's and stuck them on like crazy, you just had to have a Ninja!

I think the GPZ was only called Ninja in the US, so in the UK/Europe I think he's right, this was the first Ninja.

1984 GPZ900 in states that was first ninja and many since then here in states and every one was its class leader or close. Some yrs other brands in same size bit faster but I have owned 3 600's over the yrs starting with 85 600 ninja first yr 600 and all were great and bullet proof.

None were officially a Ninja through the 80's, it was one US dealership that came up with the idea of the Ninja name for marketing the bikes. Kawasaki liked the idea so much they started using it on their bikes officially in 1990 I believe, ten years before this. I have this bike in the video, a 2000 E1 ZX9r, check out some vids if you want to by clicking my name.

    ZX900E1 (2000) and ZX900E2 (2001)
A dramatic new look was introduced for the 2000 model, with distinctive twin headlights and a separate ram-air intake replacing the single headlight and integrated intake of the C-model. The engine gained a few horsepower from slightly shorter length CVRD 40 mm carburetors, a compression ratio increase from a lower duration intake cam, which increased cranking compression. Further improvements were aimed primarily at handling.
The frame was made stiffer through the enlarging of the front engine mounting bolts, though this still left the ZX-9R with just a single front engine mount on either side of the frame. Further, the rubber bushings in the top rear engine mount were changed to alloy. This combined to make the engine's contribution to the stiffness of the frame/engine unit greater.
The swing arm pivot and wheel spindles were made larger in diameter, again for more stiffness. Increased offset on the triple clamps reduced the trail on the front wheel to make the steering more agile. The forks were shortened to save weight, and the rear shock top mount was redesigned to incorporate a ride-height adjuster.

This is an E1, late registered in 2001 probably, can tell by the livery that it is an E1, liveries were changed every year.
That is some great info, they also changed the stroke I think, and the swingarm was changed too, to the hex shape, lighter but stronger.

@@HalfdeadRider Yes Buddy, You guys in the UK have this stupid system whereby, the so called year of the bike is the year it was registered. So If I bought a brand new ZX9R in 2000 and didn't register it until 2010, then it miraculously becomes a 2010 model. How retarded is that ?
Clearly it isn't a 2010 model but one manufactured in 2000, so it should always be referred to as a 2000 model.
      E1 is a 2000
      E2 is a 2001
      End of Story.
The bike featured here was probably a late registered bike as this is misleading.
You can also tell by the graphics which is which.
E2 looks way better in my opinion anyway, which is why I can discern the differences pretty quickly.

      Gearbox was slightly different too.

    • @HalfdeadRider
      @HalfdeadRider 14 днів тому

@@michaelcrouch5708 yes the C model gearboxes were not great, I heard of many breaking so they fit Z1000 gearboxes, but there were lots more changes for the E models, to the engine alone as the guy above said plus more including now being an aluminium block to lighten it quite a bit.
Rake and wheelbase was different, shorter WB. Airbox was larger too, so much I don't remember the full list after a hot day, evening job and it is now very late.
I have this E1 in the best colours, lightening blue and violet, plenty of vids of it on my channel if interested.

He meant the first Kawasaki to don the name 'Ninja', he's right for the UK/Europe. The US marketed the 84' GPZ900 as a Ninja and that started it all off over there, later Japan started using it as they liked the idea.

He's in the UK and Kawasaki markets their bikes under different names in different parts of the world even if they are identical. For example, I have a 2002 Kawasaki "Ninja 600" that also has "ZX-6" on it. In the UK, this same bike was sold as "ZZR-600". The title for both lists the model as "ZX600E" though.
