    Your a saint.........I have a 86 and it started to do the following....turn the key would start when key was on the full on position but shut off as soon as you let the key go..........so I jumped the starter relay to go to work and when I got off work the van was back to normal again but not sure if my van being a 1986 has a shut off relay like this one...I don't see one.....I do see another silver box relay and when I disconnected and re connect the van seemed to go back to normal ....if that makes sence.......

      It may not have an auto shut down relay, but the starter relays can cause all sorts if funky problems too. And if it's an older carbureted model it may have a ballast resistor that can cause a bunch of issues like that as well.

    Thank you for your video. My van is a 91, has the same relay pulled out of it! Mine keeps going through starters like crazy, but as you pointed to, my start relay is apparently unplugged! And must have been bypassed. Maybe I'm just blowing out the starter solenoid on the starter? Also I've done 2 water pumps, 1 alt, ac pump finally went out, 3 radiators and numerous other small parts! Engine keeps plugging away at a quart of oil every 3 to 4 gas tanks(cause I do not track mileage)

      It sounds to me like you might ve getting constant juice to the starter or something and it keeps burning them up if the relay is bypassed. That is probably the number one biggest complaint from most people on these vans; they were notorious for wiring problems.

    I replaced the drivers power window motor, I thought I had all the wiring in the correct place but the regulator nicked the brown wire from the switch module. All the fuses look ok but no power to the window. it's a 1990(but with the 1989 fuse box in the glove box) b250 ram van conversion. The relay are supposed to be self correcting but I don't know. No continuity in the switch, thus no power to it. Ideas?

    • @CrazyWoody1989
      @CrazyWoody1989  Рік тому

      Hmmmm, seems like it would almost have to be a broken or corroded wire, unless there's a relay under the dash for the power windows. I'm not sure though. I know my 87 GMC van has one, but I couldn't say for the Dodge.

The new problem is, 10 times starts first time, number 11 will not start unless you put gas in the carb. 12-20 times car starts, 21st time have to put gas in carb in order to start. So, most time start , next time will not, then it will. (a new fuel pump was installed) I think it is so amazing people like yourself take time to put videos on youtube, just to help others. I just purchased a Roadtrek B350 and the shutdown relay was bypassed with an inline splice in a little red wire near the battery straight to the battery. Regularly pops the 30 amp inline fuse. . . )-: The brake lights stay on, also the speedometer and odometer do not work. Seems they might somehow all share a wanky circuit.

      It could be a few different things, on older vehicles it's usually a speedo cable issue but on a newer car with a vehicle speed sensor it could be a sensor or voltage issue. Whatever the case, generally it's a lot harder to track the problem down than it is to fix it once it's found.

      skiddyfisk There could be any number of reasons why it was bypassed. That is one thing about some of the older Dogdes, they were known to have a lot of wiring issues. Hey sturdy wood just wondering if there's a way to get in contact with you. Just bought a 91 dodge ram b350 and I'm having some problems with, I believe the ASD. It was bypassed on mine aswell and I'm trying to go back to factory. At the moment it doesn't start, no crank, fuel, or spark which leads me to think it's the ASD

    • @CrazyWoody1989
      @CrazyWoody1989  5 років тому +1

      It seems to be very common to see them bypassed. I know they were pretty troublesome to begin with. If it's bypassed now, I would just start tracing some wires and try to find what isn't getting any juice. It will be easier to find the problem that way than what it would be to try and put an ASD back on it I believe.

    • @Unknown_User_
      @Unknown_User_ 5 років тому +2

      @@CrazyWoody1989 that's also what I keep finding, but i still can't seem to understand why it would need to be bypassed. I'm not very mechanically inclined but I'm slowly figuring these things out. So basically I started with a giant mess of wires from an after market radio and some switches to turn the head lights on. Found a relay what I believe was the aftermarket ASD to bypass the original one but everything that was connected to that was the radio and light switches. I've since taken all that crap out. But keeping in mind what you said, since I've taken out what I believe was the bypass asd should I just start over and get a new relay and bypass the original again?

    • @CrazyWoody1989
      @CrazyWoody1989  5 років тому +1

      @Unknown H yes, if you know which wires are which then you should just get another relay like was in it and hook it all back up and hopefully that should fix it. One reason it's so common for the ASD to be bypassed is these vans and especially the next body style after them were prone to a lot of electrical issues. My Dodge van had endless electrical demons. Pretty much nothing works in it (radio, a.c. interior lights etc)

      Stuart Woody hey this is the same person who commented before in this thread. I did what you said took me a while because I had limited time to work on it. Finally after all that work getting it back to its original set up I got it to start back up and it does amazingly but I also found there’s a short in the transmission. My question is if you happen to know anything about the solenoids that are plugged into it. There are 3 from what I found two plugged on the outside and one inside. Or anywhere I can find this diagram? I’m hoping if I replace a particular solenoid it will get going no problem. I’m just not sure which is which or what is what?

    • @CrazyWoody1989
      @CrazyWoody1989  5 років тому +1

      @Malaysia Nunez I don't know about the transmission wiring much in these things. I imagine one plug has something to do with shift solenoids and one probably operates the external overdrive unit. If you just Google "A518 wiring diagram" or something along those lines there will probably be forums galore about it. The transmissions in these old dodge trucks and vans were certainly a weak point

I see where the adjuster bracket goes attached to waterpump with 2 bolts but the thicker bracket that attaches to the block is what I'm having issues lining up. There are 2 bolts at the top near the ac compressor is to the left and it appears that's where 2 bolts from the bracket go but when I put those in the bracket doesnt sit flush is kinda at an angle not sitting against the engine flat. Do you happen to know if there is supposed to be a spacer behind the bracket at the top similar to the spacer on the power steering bracket.
