Yu Yu hakusho is the story of a boy named Yusuke Urameshi, a street thug turned spirit world detective. Yeah it's a little weird, but it's less weird than a robot that feeds you tomatoes, and that exists. Either way, to date Yu Yu Hakusho remains my favorite anime of all time, so join me and i'll show you why.

Its a comment, its PINNED.
Welcome or welcome back! Man, what a week. This was an incredibly difficult script to write, it took me most of the week pushing all of our schedules back and back and back. You'd think that when something is your favorite it'd be easier, but in fact, the opposite is true. In general last week was hard, winter's coming in new england and its always a big change.
We actually didnt get this wrapped and uploaded until 6am this morning after a grueling 18 hour day, felt like i was channeling Yoshihiro Togashi a bit lol. But thats the creator grind! Im happy people seem to be enjoying the episode! Time to dive into your comments and ill see you soon.

Thanks Mike for this video. Yu Yu Hakusho is also my all time favorite and I would always come back to it no matter what. This is the anime that I would constantly watch and come back to as many times as I want to and not get bored. The first time I saw this I was in 3rd grade and I just loved it and looked forward to it after coming home and finishing my homework. I don't curse because I have an honor code and I get a little annoyed with cursing but while watching, I wasn't bothered by it because I felt like Yusake had his reason to have a bad mouth because he had no father, his mom wasn't around much and nobody in his school believed in him except his rival, girlfriend and his teacher. And you know what I loved it. I can recite almost every line Yusake or Kurama, or Kuwabra or Hiei spoke. And yes Hiei is my favorite character.
Why the fuck did we not get a season 2 with the old graphics!? Id love it now but man this is as close to my heart as DBZ
For ages 13+? Anime are cartoons, cartoons are for kids. The FTA and COPPA don't car if you say 13+ they're going to say it's for kids and you're going to have to pay 40,000 in fines. Before you ask no UA-cam will not help you with your fine and no they don't care about you.
Immeasurable respect for this video. PERIOD. I always try to spread the love for Yu Yu Hakusho and share its greatness with the world. Thank You.
Thanks, Yu Yu hakusho has been my favorite anime for years and I’m glad others still love it too
The fact that the creator of this and Sailor Moon are married makes my heart soar.
What
No, the creator of Sailor Moon is married to the creator of JoJo, Hirohiko Araki. The creator of Yu Yu Hakusho, Togashi has created HxH also, but isn't married to the Sailor Moon author
@@kleozane2781 no, you're wrong. Togashi IS married to Takeuchi. They've been married since 1999. They're also known as the Million Yen Couple because they're both so damn rich from their series.

I've always seen YYH's chronology as;
-Testing Yusuke's Strength
-Testing Yusuke's Mind
-Testing Yusuke's Will & Judgement
Honestly all three were in the entire series
i think at first its testing his morals then his convictions then finally his ideals....
What order is this in? I'm assuming
Strength: Spirit Detective saga to Dark Tournament
Mind: Sensei/Chapter Black?? I don't really understand this one
Will: Three Kings tournament
@@socialaccount0000 nah the mind is definitely when he fought against Toguro. Yusuke strengthened his mind after the lost of Genkai and then with Kuwabara. When he first met Toguro, it was the first time Yusuke were absolutely terrified by someone’s strength
@@ygk6279 So then Strength is Sensui, and Will is the Three Kings?
I remember watching the first episode of Yu Yu Hakusho and crying during the scene of Yusuke's funeral. Being at the peak of my teen angst accompanied with my depression was not a good time during my life, and I often came close to taking my life since I was under the belief that nobody would care. I'm not the type to get over emotional, but this first episode had me in tears and proved me completely wrong. I saw myself in Yusuke like many people do, and the first episode alone of this show was able to make me re-evaluate my life and acknowledge all the people that are there for me. Seriously, Im grateful as hell for this. At that point I knew that what I was about to watch would become my favorite show with my favorite characters. Forever Fornever everybody
Yeah the first episode hits like a rollercoaster going at speed of light if you have a specific mindset (cried for hours after watching the first episode)

Kuwabara is my favorite character lol
Who shits on Kuwabara? Every analysis I see understands he's the heart of the group and he was essential for a lot of victories
Kuwabara always felt to me like an exaggeration of the “righteous hero” that would normally be the main character

The first episode when Yusuke is watching his own funeral really hit home for me as a kid and got me hooked on the show. This series does a great job making the viewers feel something, I remember the series with the rogue spirit detective and actually feeling depressed by his logic. Great video!
Yu Yu has literally everything you could want in an anime. Great story, great filler, interesting characters, romance, action, badass moments, sad moments, comedy. I don’t think anything will surpass that show for me and that’s why it’s hard to get into a lot of anime

This is one of the few anime I've seen that utilize their secondary characters. In the most iconic arc, the Dark Tournament, the final match isn't even a 1v1, but a 2v2 where Kuwabara is important not only as a support, but a motivation. Power creep is a problem in most anime, but Yuyu Hakusho game the idea that your friends, though weaker than you, are still valuable. I've yet to see a modern show that utilizes its supporting cast so such an extent. Perhaps with the exception of MHA but its future is yet to be seen.
Yuyu Hakusho is my favorite for many reasons, from fights to powers to structure, but my favorite part is the characters who feel real and struggle with all they have and are rewarded for it. Not just Yusuke, but all of them come so far and stand out as the greatest team in all of anime.
Has to be Hunter X Hunter for me, but I respect your choice. After all, it's from the same author.

I loved this show. Yuske represent the angry helpless child in everyone
in pretty sure the scene of yusuke regressing in age as he runs and the kids following regress until hes left alone as a 4 year old sad child until keiko sticks her hand out to him is literally the scene that made narutos entire backstory..

Then you either have seen very little anime/manga.

Hoestly, the dude isnt wrong. Arguably, one of the best anime villains ever seen in shounen is Toguro(watch Alecxander’s video on him, he goes into every point of why he’s a good villain) and let’s be honest, sometimes anime makeshighschool kids look like kids. No hate on my hero academia but, boys in my class were that short in middle school. By highschool, everyone was a skyscraper. Btw, I watch alot of anime.
And have read alot of manga.

I`m just trying to say the dude has a point and I`ve watched and read enough manga to say that some anime characters just dont seem their age sometimes mentally aad/or physically. Btw, in my school it almost seemed like a rule that every guy had to be a skyscraper to attend. I know its not the case for other schools but damn were the girls and guys tall and Im average height.(granted some girls are like dwarfs)
Yusuke was one of the Shonen characters that didn’t fall into the basic Shonen formula
Uh yeah he did. It's just that since the series didn't last as long as some other shounen he didn't the tropes as hard. He wasn't able to but he still fell to them pretty hard though.
Enemies turned friends, powered up super form, uncontrolled dark side, quick temper, a complainer, doesn't give up when facing adversity, not smart etc.
@@buster3041 Some of those things you named aren't true. He gave up against Sensui because he knew that he had no chance. He figured the best thing he could do was die and give his friends a boost. Any other shounen would have seen Yusuke pull some power out of his ass because "I fight for my friends!". lol Now granted, a giant deus ex machina happens afterward, but I'd take it over Dragonball, Naruto, Bleach, and Fairy Tale's typical solutions.
Also, Yusuke isn't school smart, that's all. He's very different from a Goku or Luffy. He's street smart and inventive in his fights. Quick temper is usually played for laughs in shounen. In Yusuke's case, it was the key to his strength for half the series. The only other shounen character to ever be like that was Gohan. He also doesn't have an uncontrolled dark side. Raizen took over his mind one time and then that was it.
He falls into a few shounen protagonist trappings, but not nearly to the extent of the newer ones.
Define "shounen" cuz it doesn't sound like u know what it is
Cableguy15 Bullshit. Yuusuke and the entire Yu Yu Hakusho series codified a lot of the shonen hero tropes.
Regarding the Sensui fight, the whole mention of him actually being an ancestral son of a demon really does check off the point of out of nowhere power ups. Seriously, up to this point of the series we are under the impression that he is just a human with amazing spiritual pressure like Genkai, and then all of the sudden it turns out he is just a son of a demon king instead? At least those four other animes you mention (yes even Fairy Tail) didn’t pull such a sudden plot reveal in the near end of the series and actually hinted at it being a thing from the get go.
And the example with Goku and Luffy, well like Yuusuke they are also pragmatic characters in their own right. Goku, in case you forgotten, is a fighting prodigy who has been shown to be quick to adapt to what opponent he faces and uses unorthodox strategies when defeating them. And while Luffy may be the biggest dumbass, the kid is capable of taking advantage of a situation like using hostages/human shields to protect himself, exploiting the weakness of his enemy that he can’t defeat with just brute force alone, and even concot a brilliant distraction plan where he take advantage of his own status as a shit starter so that his crewmates can convertly go for the targeted item. Badically pragmatism is a trait used by key shonen heroes and Yuusuke is no different from them.
1000tlt same for hunter x hunter

YYH is my favorite anime of all time hands down. And the dialogue legitamitely makes me laugh. I often don't find Anime to be funny, maybe it's a cultural difference with humor, but the English dub has some amazing comebacks and one liners
I've always loved togashi's way of writing. He gives you a simple start then slowly as the series progress he will start to make things convoluted making the original themes broaden in aspect, showing exactly what you said, the duality of life.
And sadly Toguro was still only using 80% of his powers
Really? He went over 100 in his fight with Yusuke no?
@@100navat I was joking because of the meme

Remember YuYu Hakusho was suopu to end after the dark tournament I believe. The writer was made to do more episodes and shit after so it makes sense that toguro was made to seem so strong

They're called the Million Yen Couple!
That’s so cool
but without toriyama there would be no this ''lengendary manga creator''
An anime YT channel talking about how great Yu Yu Hakusho is?
Instant fucking sub
On a “anime from my childhood” kick. Thank you for providing this great review! I was right there with you, Toonami, late night, watching anime with my friends, beautiful moments that live rent free in my mind.
Also watched this at my grandma's, she ain't around anymore, those were the good days, cheers
This was the first anime i ever watched as a 2nd or 3rd grader my gma was there with me staying up late on a school night. I can never think about yu yu hakusho and not have my gma come to mind, shes gone now too. Definitely the good days brotha
That shit hit my heart to bro my grandma 👵 sho was around then when I was watching this at her house
yu yu hakusho is frankly, the best. It just has the best characters. That’s what you need for a great story: great people to go with on a journey.
true...its likeable ...a lot of anime are not...
"A broken home isn't necessarily a broken world" is an excellent quote and thank you for giving that vocabulary to us.
im 35 years old and im FINALLY watching yu yu hakusho. ive been putting it off for 20 years almost, lol.
The fact that this anime has to be told to people that it's the best bothers me intensely. Yu yu hakusho is apart of what I consider my personal big 3 and deffinently a show I love.
Out of curiosity, what are the other 2?
@@Kurostyle21 jojo and pre 2000s gundam (specifically zeta). They dont have to be my current favourite but all three of them are anime I've most consistently enjoyed a whole damn lot over the years.
Absolutely... my Big 3 too
OG Big 3 (90’s): DBZ, YYH, & Jojo’s Bizarre
Mainstream Big 3 (2000’s): One Piece, Naruto, & Bleach
New School Big 3 (2010’s): MHA, Black Clover, & Demon Slayer
PF Big 3 YYH, Shadow Skill, Slayers
Can we have a moment of silence to appreciate Kuwabara's mulberry speech?
"A mullbery is a tree and Kuwabara is a man"
I love Yu Yu Hakusho so much and all I’ve wanted to hear is someone talk about why it’s so good. Thank you for making this.
I know this is from over a year and a half ago, but I was absolutely thrilled to see this video recommended to me. I saw clips of Yu Yu Hakusho when I was in middle/ high school but I didn't have the means to watch it until a while after I graduated. After watching it for the first time, I really wish I had the opportunity to watch it sooner because there are so many powerful messages in it. To this day, I still come back and rewatch it every once in a while. In fact, I just did recently. I recommend it to friends all the time, too. It will always be my favorite. Thank you so much for making this video to tell people how great it is.
I can't express how much this show means to me. I'm glad to see so many people love this show aswell.
Yeah I love it so much😭😭😭😭😭😭
I’m 26 and 12 yr old me use to watch tf outta this after school! Nostalgia!!
Me 2 bruh
Still one of my favorite animes
One of my good friends in 8th grade introduced me to this show....and it's been my favorite anime ever since. And the only fighting anime I have ever been interested in. Yusuke is a treasure.
I’m weird in that I liked the show the most when it isn’t about the battles. The fights are awesome, of course, but I got invested in the character drama right at the start and was surprised when the plot switched focus to action. The Dragon Ball-style fights weren’t really about character development, until The Dark Tournament when the show finally found the right balance.
even when the show switched to action they still showed shit ton of characters development and interactions. Especially Hiei and Yukinas backstory.
Dude, I totally agree. I really, really wanted more of Yusuke and Kuwabara just messing around, going on spooky little spirit detective cases before the power levels ramped up (with Hiei and Kurama mixed in of course).
After genkai/rando or after the saint beasts would have been perfect. Lots of people say the first 15 episodes are slow, but they had this weird mystique with the characters and with all the odd spirit world and apparition stuff. I would have loved to see more of that while it still felt new and mysterious, after the dark tournament the spirit world stuff is kind of commonplace.
I don't think your or my opinion is that popular tho lol
@@bradleylovej I just finished watching the show and it always felt like when the stakes ramped up it tended to go off the rails a bit. The hangout episodes were the best imo
Chapter black Arc is the pinnacle of the series imo.
I think one extra season would of been good and still kept a good ending because the manga had a extra arc and it turns out that spirit world was corrupt and that chapter black was used for brain washing demons and king Yama was behind of all this. So sensiu was right even though koenma wasn't corrupt everyone above him was.
@@ambrizfer7898 woah! Never knew this! I'm gonna have to read the manga now
@@ambrizfer7898 Yeah I liked the anime ending but the last arc could have been flushed out, about 10-12 more episodes including the other details in the manga. They only threw some easter eggs regarding those things in the anime which are just for the manga readers.
@@ambrizfer7898 wasn't there supposed to be a chapter white? Koenma mentioned that they were supposed to be viewed as a set, but they never brought it up... in the anime at least.
The older I get, the more I can understand and appreciate this season
This,Gundam Wing, and DBZ were my jamsssss
They way you talked about Genkai had me tearing up all over again! Wow...2002....I was so hooked soon as I saw this! And it’s an anime who’s dub is just as amazing.
I would like to say that Yoshihiro Togashi is an anime storytelling god.
As a one piece fan, I think he's the perfect rival for Oda. He does things that Oda struggles to do amazingly and Oda does lots of things that Togashi isn't the best at. They are perfect parallels in the writing world, it's insane
@@waluigi3515 ngl, I know a lot of people who love one piece, but never have I ever heard people compliment Oda's writing. Usually people tell me they're drawn to it for the good fight scenes. Although I can speak on it I've never seen one piece
D nebs nah the storytelling is amazing too
D nebs yea actually I’d say one piece fights are eh but the storytelling and layered plot is amazing
D nebs really? One Piece's fights are enjoyable, but not THAT good choreography wise. The main reason it's so popular is because of the world building, the characters, the mysteries and hype, and overall storytelling.
Yu Yu Hakusho is still my favorite, but only the dub version. Now, I know that's blasphemy to some, and I usually prefer subbed Anime, but the changes they made to the script really elevated the dub for me. And Justin Cook just killed it with his performance.
Yea its easily one of the best anime dubs ever. Maybe even better than Bebop tbh
Weebs only prefer sub
@@AlterAce same for me dub was soo alive
@@AlterAce factsssss
@@lord_cobi However good a dub might be it always feels like a fanfic. It's not about being a weeb, it's about watching the original creators vision instead of video from one source and audio from some unrelated group of people who might have different sensibilities, sense of humor etc. It goes beyond anime, German movies are best with subtitles, The Witcher 3 should be played with Polish voices etc. It also adds that extra educational layer, I never spent a minute learning Japanese, but after many years of anime I can now understand like 50% without subtitles and speak it on a very basic level.
I have to say……this was the best(and most heartfelt) review of any anime by far. Your love of this series shines through and it’s made me want to revisit a show that I enjoyed so much in my young adulthood.
Great work……and Thank you
Yu Yu was epic...I can't believe I never finished it until I was older but I an glad I did
I have often wondered if, over the years since YYH's conclusion, Togashi ever thought of new story arcs to take the series further without having to worry about the problem of power escalation weighing things down.
I think he was more worried about ruining the delicate balance he had taken so long to create.
shonnen battle series biggest longevity continuation issue is power or threat escalation..it ruined dragonball It ruined naruto .
Asmosis Jones main reason why is that they dont take the time for it to make sense.

Honestly I’m glad I’m not the only who feels this way about yuyu hakusho
Sandman Slim I should ask you the same
Sandman Slim for putting out a comment of what I think, smh I think your just looking for a stretch my dude🤦🏽♂️
Sandman Slim I find it hilarious that you continue to stretch this pointless conversation just because of one word. But I guess I don’t mind giving you the attention since it seems like you don’t get it anywhere else
Sandman Slim since you want to stretch the fact I put honestly let’s question why there’s one like on a few of your comments. I’m guessing you wanted to think someone would agree with you? Curious
Sandman Slim shoot your right seems like you didn’t forget to like you own comment. 😂
I grew up watching anime via Animax, and Yu Yu Hakusho was one of my favorites. I wasn't even 10 years old when I watched it, and yet I was hooked every time it came on. I was invested in these characters and their battles, the world they inhabited, and their relations with each other. As I grew older and got access to the internet, one of the first things I did was watch episodes and clips of shows I watched as a kid and see how they hold up - Yu Yu Hakusho was one of them. I started appreciating this series more, until it eventually became my all-time favorite anime. What's funny is that a lot of kids grew up watching DBZ, and yet I never was never one of them. Not because I didn't want to see it, but because Animax or any other channel that I had access to, never aired a single episode of it. But honestly, I'm glad I got to grew up with YYH instead, since I consider it to be far superior to DBZ in just about every aspect.
Man you covering all my top animes in the past. Your a man of genuine culture
To be honest, I don't even have to watch the video since the title is enough for me.
I don't need proof that this anime is singlehandedly the best anime there is.
This anime is the only one that has managed to get me crying one second, giggling the next, screaming and crying the next, and well, you get the idea. I've never been obsessed over an anime this much before.
Yu Yu Hakusho will always have an irreplaceable place in my heart. I wish I was able to grow up with this show, but sadly, that wasn't the case.
This show has many lessons, and amazing punchlines. There is no anime equal to this one.
To me, this show is the Japanese version of ATLA. Under all the comedy and amazing fight scenes, there are plenty of life lessons to be uncovered upon second, third, fourth... twentieth viewing X)
When you’re trained relentlessly by Frieza, can you really be surprised with the depths of strength he gains? 😜
This is part of why I for the longest time thought that Frieza was a girl.
Tim Seals OMG YOU TOO!?
i kept comparing her to frieza and now i know why
just found your channel the other day. ive binged a few. and subbed. good stuff man. now i gotta watch yuyu again lol
Great review! Im 30 now and still find myself rewatching Yu Yu Hakusho every other year!
"You would leave behind a hole that simply can't be filled..." Damn dude. Well said.
Ll
Even the villains on this show made you understand them. They weren't just cliche villains. They really had layers of complexity to them. Great story overall and the voice actors nailed it. I'm gonna binge it again this weekend lol
Awesome video man, yu yu hakusho has been my all time favorite anime. Your video definitely did the anime justice. Thanks for the content!
Wow this almost made me tear tf up. Well freaking done!
Yusuke and Genkai's relationship is the best I have seen in anything. It really reminds me of how I would lash out at my mother, get scolded, but then get taught a valuable lesson. Then how the relationship grows into the ultimate respect and love for each other is amazing. Yusuke's VA is also so good because he actually spoke like a teenager. Yusuke sounded and acted like I did as a kid so his character felt real to me.
Best anime opening theme song ever. Japanese or Emglish!
Agree 100 %
Yes I'd admit I tear up when I hear the full version of "Smile Bomb" so good😁
Wow what a beautiful video. I loved how Dearly Beloved was background music for talking about Genkai.
this was a amazing video! i was moved by your analysis! keep up the good work!
I tried for years telling my friends how great this show was. I'm glad someone else enjoyed this as much as I did.
I don't really think any other anime has as strong of an opening episode as Yu Yu Hakusho
DoctorZack cowboy bebop but YYH still has my favorite anime OP
Danny White cowboy bepop opening isn’t even good lmao it’s overrated my boy
Those are just opinions
The first episode is so devastatingly emotional 😭😭😭
Best anime of all time for me truly a classic my favorite, I hope they can still reboot it somehow or continue I swear if I had the money I would go to Japan & talk to Togashi & fund a new YYH show
Opinions
good call. nevertheless

The beginning on how you can leave people really hit me.
The scene where he saves puu gives me goosebumps EVERYTIME
Bro u did a great job summarizing what this anime is all about. I loved yu yu. Rite after watching it yuske became my all time favorite anime character. Brings back so many memories being a lil kid in the early 2000's. It also had the best intro theme song of all time imo👍🏾
