    My problem with episodic gaming is it adds the Netflix problem to video games. You might get really into a story, only for it to be cancelled before it’s finished. For example, I paid full price for Deus Ex Mankind Divided, got “part 1” of a story (it just stops suddenly after an early boss fight with, no closure while you wait for parts 2 & 3), then because the game sold millions of copies but not a gajillion copies, the publisher overlords cancel parts 2 & 3 and it sucks to be you.

    As an Italian, I can tell you that the tourist spots in Rome are very expensive and not very good, they definitely take advantage of tourists there. For the pizza... It sounds like you ordered a margherita, which is just dough, tomato sauce and mozzarella. If you want toppings you should order something like a quattro stagioni, a capricciosa, one with prosciutto, rucola e parmigiano or if you want lots of cheese a quattro formaggi. And since you were in Rome you probably had a roman style pizza which typically is very flat.

    • @johanvanroekel8253
      @johanvanroekel8253 9 місяців тому +15

      also if back then (according to the internets this was 2011) you paid €20 for a pizza, you were definitely at a tourist trap. when we were in rome we usually had dinner somewhere in Trastavere, and selected our restaurants based on TripAdvisor. and then went to take a look whether it was full of locals. We had great dinners every time. and after 10 years of visiting Italy at least once every year. I think I kinda know what good Italian food should taste like.

    I have family in Italy and I go often to visit then. A margarita, the pizza you described, should be like 6€ to 8€ and should be very tasty (basically, you learn all you need to know about a pizzeria from it).
    Pizza in touristic places is often terrible in Italy.
    But even in "normal Italian" places I've had pretty awful things. If you ever give Italy another chance, get recommendations from the hotel staff (ask them where they eat themselves when they eat out, not where they expect tourists to go)

      I have and everyone I studied computer science (20 years ago) with used exe like Dan, any extension with could be pronounced easily as a word were words (exe, rar, tar, bat, zip, gif) the others were not and pronounced like abbreviations (png, bmp, txt).

    Re: "resentment around doing crazy projects with stuff provided by sponsors" (~ 2:04:00) I think some of the issue may be that a perception of "already well-off guy got free stuff for his own home" isn't an angle that has a whole lot of positive spin. I don't think most people would have an issue with "this cache server for whale lan is being provided by supermicro and its badass; here's why" because that's something involving the business not personally benefiting for a company thing.

      It's a bit of a strange one, since so much of it becomes content and could often be a business expense even if buy it at sticker price. Like with the theatre room, pretty sure Klipsch or Epson didn't sponsor, but they got their products featured so not sure how it works when it's a case of 'they sent these over' , or the amp there that I forget who made.

    I find that it's very hard to find good food in touristy areas in general, even if you're not in a particularly well-known restaurant. Across my trips to Europe as a Canadian, I found that food in the general area around my hotels in Bercelona, Venice, and Amsterdam was wildly overpriced and terrible quality. As soon as I hopped on a train to an area that's not commonly visited by tourists, the food got a lot cheaper and a LOT better.

    • @Mr.Marbles
      @Mr.Marbles 9 місяців тому +2

      This. In tourist areas there are 2 factors:
      1 its really expensive to have your business there, since the city wants to cash in
      2 you dont really have to try, since the tourists will come once and never return. So you can just cheap out on quality
      Meanwhile in a small town you have returning customers. So if your food is bad you just will cease to exist.

I mostly avoid bread and look for food that isn't full of hydrogenated oils and other highly processed garbage but it's damn near impossible. Even a lot of "healthy" stuff isn't healthy. It also irks me how stuff is labeled non-GMO verified because I don't actually care about that (there's no such thing as non-GMO) but the healthier stuff usually has that label and is healthier because it doesn't have a bunch of processed shit or uses grass fed cows or their milk (the grass fed part actually makes a huge difference in taste and nutritional value).

That is all that mattered. They did things right more than other big players in the industry, so its hard to say they were bad. If visiting European cities, you must avoid tourist traps, and there are tree pretty solid ways to manage that:
    1. Gold option: Ask a local
    2. Silver option: Take to the side roads
    3. Bronze: Check how many tourists there are. If you see more cameras, Hawaiian shirts and sun-glasses then people, turn around.

    The reason exe/ini are pronounced like Dan says is correct IMO. “x-i” is the phonetic way to say “e-x-e” quickly. I would agree both are interchangeable but also full names are also valid. If any confusion still, then spelling it out is the only solution (eg: jpeg/jpg are often phased the same but if a script only accepts “jpg” then read out the letters).

Different people might want to have different settings, and having a global settings will make the same thing for all players, and also make everyone go somewhere else to change them will significantly delay the play (after all, you might pass the controller just during the character selection).

But Call of Duty use to have incredible games with amazing single player campaigns. Blizzard had RPGs and Dungeon crawlers that defined their genres. Wow is still the MMO of choice for many people. Guitar Hero was huge. They own Spyro and Crash Bandicoot. They own beloved IP. That's how they get people. It's not just addiction with gambling mechanics. It's Nostalgia.

There are plenty of games that have no challenging elements but can be satisfying and rewarding to a bunch of people. Personally, while I do love Souls games, I am also a walking sim enjoyer. I find both rewarding, in different ways. That said, I have to agree that the dynamic difficulty feature should have an obvious setting. Maybe do what a bunch of modern games do and offer it when the game is first started, along with various accessibility options.

    However, if they're comparable to Miles Morales, £30 per game would leave me more satisfied.
    The Final Fantasy VII remake met my expectations in terms of length and value, making me open to future parts following the same standard.

      Completely agree. Bad marketing around miles Morales and they made it seem like it was a full game. I understand splitting ff7 into parts because the og game is huge and I'm sure they don't want another ff15 situation of taking an entire decade for a subpar game. I welcome it if it's ff7 size, but I already know they're gonna abuse the "parts" vernacular. This will now be a way to make single player games essentially a live service which I'm sure execs are foaming at the mouth for.

    Sequels are not episodic, they are an iterations on the story with engine and mechanics upgrades. Expansions are a sequel with the same engine where dev doesnt have to rebuild the whole game to create more story and gameplay. DLC can be a smaller scale expansion but is often content that was cut or unfinished when the game is pushed to launch, making it episodic in nature. Episodic can be great, as long as the content and price are scaled so that you arent overpaying for less content.
