A Simpsons History on Shelbyville would make for an intriguing watch. Its past, present, and future rivalry with Springfield has been a running gag in the show.
I think the trouble with later Sideshow Bob is that there's potential there, but it's buried under the ramped up wackiness. The earlier seasons were good at balancing the tonal differences between seasons with the main point of the story, but the later episodes tend to get too invested in one side which means the actual plot tends to wander off and ends up unsatisfying and just weird rather than funny.
they also definitely fell into the trap of making him strictly formula, making his shcemes ultiamtely be about murdering bart, while in the classic era only ONE of his plans had was about killing bart, and he had other schemes that had nothing to do with him. They also could've done more with his family after establishing them all as fellow villains, like a sorta evil counterpart to the entire simpsons family somehow.
Even from your description, I really enjoyed Sideshow Bob's semi-redemption arc around the end. It really does feel like he at least somewhat got over his fixation
i think i speak for all of us when i say i'd love to see you cover the barflys, sam and larry, the characters who probably have the most mismatched appearances-to-lines-spoken ratio of the whole cast.
@@maganhassan2627 I don't think we've outgrown it considering I enjoy season 1-8 as much as ever. It's a show that should've been killed off after season 8, but it was just too popular and profitable so they hired a bulky staff of unattached writers and let it run its mediocre course.

It's always fascinating to see the show deteriorate as it goes along. Following a single character really pushes that aspect forward as the plots get more and more contrived.
When I rewatched the series in order some time ago- it kinda dawned on me that Bob's revenge plots on Bart specifically only happened a couple of times yet the show seemed to always treat it as thought he'd attempted several times to kill Bart early on.
yeahfor some reaso the writers forgot about bob's other elements an focused too much on his desire to murder bart, likely because Cape Feare is one of the more famous and popular episodes
I always thought it was interesting how he's considered Bart's nemesis, when Lisa puts in easily over 50% of the effort in foiling his schemes. I kinda want to check that Bob-Lisa episode out, they seem like they would have chemistry with one another when each of them loves being the smartest person in the room. Black Widower has got to be my favorite Bob episode just because we get all the threatening plans and mystery of Bob without some of the cartoonishness that debuted in Cape Feare. FWIW, I'd love to see a Shelbyville episode!
I remember watching the Lisa/Bob episode and enjoying seeing those two paired up together even though the plot was bizarre and lacking. I recommend checking it out if not just for the satisfaction of seeing those two paired up finally
Funeral for a fiend is actually great, imo. Bob was such a manipulator that he made Bart look like the bad guy and him as a guy who did nothing wrong in front of all Springfield. This is actually a pretty clever commentary on the manipulation of the masses and in the end even Bart started feeling guilty, out of peer pressure. Then we got one of the most chilling one liners in the show. m.ua-cam.com/video/KlivA1ExIEA/v-deo.html Bart: Now everyone wants me to be in that coffin instead of you! Bob(slowly opens the coffin): Then lets give the people... WHAT THEY WANT!!! Call me edgy, but sideshow bob episodes need to have a dark atmosphere like Cape Feare. Its kinda like the invader zim in the simpsons. A goofy show suddently becomes surprisingly dark and serious out of nowhere in a way it makes sense, while still having goofy moments here and there.
Corto Maltese idk I guess I just think the ending is kinda dumb. The writers wrote themselves into a corner so they’re like “let’s make sideshow bob sing for hours”
@@goldenfiberwheat238 yeah, its a bit forced, but it makes sense. Yeah, the ending couldve been better, but the jokes in the episode are very good and the atmosphere has that sweet invader zim-esque mix between kid friendly and horror at times.
I love Sideshow Bob, I remember watching the episode where he sings HMS Pinafore as a kid. That episode got me into watching Frasier and Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Kelsey Grammar truly has a masterful voice
Do Maggie next! She may be in every episode but she rarely does much of note. She's gone through a load of changes since the beginning and could definitely make an interesting episode.
I'll be honest: I think Sideshow Bob has an almost perfect record of episodes. I even like The Italian Bob, and I hate travel episodes. I admit that in the HD era it started getting spotty. There was an episode revolving around genetic manipulation that was all sorts of stupid and even one of my favorite characters couldn't save that one. It's kinda amusing. Krusty the Klown and Sideshow Bob are kinda tied to the nr 1 spot of my favorite Simpsons characters. It's funny that the two characters I love most are so closely related. So about The Bob Next Door: I don't mind it. I think the 'I don't care if you don't have a face!' gag is very funny. It's a mess, but it's funny.
I think the problem with Sideshow Bob in the later seasons is that after his redemption episode they didn't really know what to do with him, so they just kept jumping back and fourth from him being redeemable, to him being even more evil than before.
12:30 After all of the modern episodes we've gotten with Bob, I think the writers should experiment with having him just be one of the various background characters that shows up from time to time. They could probably get away with recording Grammer's lines once a season to spread across multiple episodes, not unlike what they did with Phil Hartman.
With Bob's second redemption having happened, I always thought the best angle would be to look at his past instead of resetting him back to villainy once more. There's so many unanswered questions about who Bob was as a person before/during his time on Krusty's show. It's always been heavily implied that he was actually a good person beforehand, and that whatever he experienced working for Krusty sent him down the wrong path.
I was thinking about if you had made a Sideshow Bob Simpsons Histories yesterday another amazing video like always love this series and your videos keep up the great work :) also, I agree Shelbyville would be a good topic for this series.
Thanks for uploading this. Sideshow Bob is one of my favourite characters. Too many awesome moments to mention unfortunately. Speaking of next characters to analyse, Professor Frink would be a great choice.

Please do a few more post season 10 episodes, we all know they are not as good, but I think there are some fantastic hidden gems. I have a top ten myself that are as good as any season 1-9 episode
Sideshow Bob episodes are the few episodes I look forward to with the newer episodes. Also, I'm a little biased because season 5 is my favorite season as a whole and Cape Feare us my favorite episode of all time.
Corto Maltese It’d be interesting to see Sideshow Bob be the one being threatened instead of him being the threat for a change and you could play with the character dynamics that way. It’s how they’ll execute it is my concern.
Maybe Bob discovers someone else is planning to kill Bart and decides to protect him because of both Bob's possessiveness and strange attachment to Bart.
i know i comment this every simpsons histories video but i would like to see kirk. as for sideshow bob, i think the reason he always worked well was because his character was so grounded with a love of the theatrics. post season 8, he's basically a super villain.
Two things. 1: I think it's appropriate that this came out in October. It's the right month for Bob, I feel. 2: I really appreciate your diplomatic attitude about the modern episodes. They seem cringeworthy in how desperate for relevancy they are and I never plan on watching them if I can help it. Despite this, it's fascinating to hear about them in a vacuum when talking about characters as a whole. Keep up the good work, man. The sincerity of your content is what keeps me coming back.
I was going to suggest Kirk for a new Histories video, but I never thought about Shelbyville until you mentioned it. I think that would be really interesting, maybe throw in some stuff about Ogdenville too and or Capital City
Hey Jims, to be honest, there is no other UA-cam channel I enjoy as much as yours: just having an entire channel run by a huge Simpsons fan discussing exclusively Simpsons things for others Simpsons geeks to enjoy is so cool! I love how deep you go into the lore research with these history videos! Regardless of what's the next episode will be about, I am certain we will love as much! You've proven that you can even make a character like Stamp the Ticket Guy interesting to watch being developed.
He desperately wanted to run the show. In act 3 he creates a kid show that is better than Krusty's in every way. It just so happens he is also a criminal psychopath.
pride and vanity basically. It was easier to frame krusty for a crime and steal his show to become the center of attention, than it was to just quit and find a new job.
7:19 i think what they should've done is had *bart* rekindle the rivalry- maybe he gets paranoid abt bob plotting something that is 100% not the case; then it's revealed that foiling bob is one of the few parts of his life bart feels like he has control over (maybe play up the insecurities revealed in bart gets an f). Wit this in mind, bob follows along, pretending bart thwarted whatever dastardly scheme he tootally had. Return him to his performer roots, as it were.
Your certainly hit the nail when you said that the writers seem to try to relieve the old glory days, failing and only being nostalgic about what used to be twenty years ago but has sadly gone. The fact is it's not just with Bob, but something more general, as you also clearly said somewhere else.
Kelsey Grammer quoted "Well, Lisa, you don't spend ten years as a homicidal maniac without learning a thing or two about dynamite." as being his favorite Sideshow Bob line in an interview on Conan. Also, with regard to the timeline, does this imply that he was a homicidal maniac before meeting Bart? Or did he just misquote the line? Haven't watched the episode in a while.
it might be like his joke in the tree house of horror episode about how it took 23 years to kill a 10 year old. it's just a joke about how long the show has been on.
In the French version, his name is not even Sideshow Bob. Because "Sideshow" has no direct equivalent thereof or straight translation. So they dubbed him... Tahiti Bob. Because of his Hawaiian look. Also yes, Sideshow Mel is redubbed Tahiti Mel as well.
I can't wait for the next Sideshow Bob episode. It's in production now. And to provide just one favorite Bob moment is hard! Every moment is worth-while! He's my crush!
I'm a bit late to the party with this video TheRealJims, (due to trying to internet detox a bit), but I really like how you did this History from a different stance - as you say, each Sideshow Bob episode kinda tells the story of Bob, there's no real fragmented backstory to piece together, and I think this video merits from the more critical take on it. I like Bob as a character, in fact a lot when he's used to his best, though he does rather become a one-joke character if not used well. I like that the earlier Bob episodes (for that, rel "the ones that generally fell during the show's Golden Era) managed to mix the idea up enough, throw in new angles, and the major key point, keep them funny and enjoyable. Although 'Cape Feare' is rightly hailed as a golden classic, being many fans' favourite episode (and I do like it), I've always been a big fan of s3's 'Black Widower', which served to reintroduce the character well, had a great mystery to solve along the way, and on hindsight is one of s3's best episodes (and the standard was very high that year). I remember not "getting" s6's 'Sideshow Bob Roberts' and maybe even being a bit disappointed - to me it had a few funny moments but nothing outstanding, but in total fairness as a Brit I have a feeling much of the humour around American politics of the time was probably lost on me and I expect was far funnier in the US. However, they redeemed themselves with s8's 'Brother from Another Series', which again threw new angles in to the mix, which I adored and consider a classic - IMO possibly the best episode from the cracks-starting-to-show season 8 ('You Only Move Twice', though many people's favourites, has never completely done it for me, call me odd). After that, later stuff like the whole body-grass plastic surgery stuff... well into the realms of "wacky, unfunny" Simpsons for my tastes, possibly might have worked as a Treehouse of Horror segment, but as a full, 'reality' episode... one of those markers where they sadly should have called it a day years go. Next character I'd like to see covered... I'd still like to see Ned Flanders done (being a fellow early-style Flanders fan) but maybe a bit too obvious. Maybe Martin Prince, or if I had to go for something less mainstream, Disco Stu. For a huge subscriber (or Christmas?) marker, one Charles Montgomery Burns - he needs to be saved for a special occasion.

I'd love to see a Simpsons histories on Quimby. Rarely has a big impact on the plot but is always memorable
"Are these morons getting dumber or just louder?" is one of my favorite lines of the show.

Still waiting for old Jewish man to get a Simpsons history episode
Old gray mare she ain't what she used to be ain't what she used to be aint what she used to be
Can your grandfather do this?
You know the door was open, Chief Breakeverything
A Simpsons History on Shelbyville would make for an intriguing watch. Its past, present, and future rivalry with Springfield has been a running gag in the show.
Still waiting and hoping for Lenny... He is more than just Carl's friend
He’s his best friend
his eye
Just dont vote Lenny for president
Totally! Lenny is even the leader of the nuclear plant for a while
Not Lenny!
My single favorite Sideshow Bob quote is: "Oh Cousin Merle, really!" I don't know why it just always makes be burst out laughing.
Now now, you know cousin Merle ain't been quite right lately.
as someone who has never seen the Sideshow Bob neighbor episode, they definitely did NOT have to make his face falling off a running gag.
My favourite Sideshow Bob moment was "Especially Lisa... but Especially Bart"
Yes the ones after the one he leaves for Italy as is the Simpsons show as a whole gets lost in wacky.
they also definitely fell into the trap of making him strictly formula, making his shcemes ultiamtely be about murdering bart, while in the classic era only ONE of his plans had was about killing bart, and he had other schemes that had nothing to do with him.
As someone who has avoided most of the newer episodes hearing the crazy ass plots just made me question what is going on with Modern Simpsons
Characters cutting their faces off outside of Treehouse of Horror, Jesus Christ
Different time different world lol new viewers & writers involved I think us older fans outgrown the Simpsons
@@maganhassan2627 I don't think we've outgrown it considering I enjoy season 1-8 as much as ever. It's a show that should've been killed off after season 8, but it was just too popular and profitable so they hired a bulky staff of unattached writers and let it run its mediocre course.
@@foxygrin i enjoyed simpsons in 2000s lool so...i still believe in some ways older fans did outgrown the Simpsons it's difficult to keep the long running show like the Simpsons as it is like I said times change so Simpsons pretty much adapts to today's society than sticking to the past and I noticed the simpsons became more like adult cartoon like family guy than the past I hope what I said makes sense to you I think newer fans like today's Simpsons than 90s simpsons
I don't think the newer generation finds face cutting that funny
It's always fascinating to see the show deteriorate as it goes along. Following a single character really pushes that aspect forward as the plots get more and more contrived.
and as this video showed bob wanting to kill bart was never his focus at first. he tried to kill bart twice through out the first few appearances.
Bob got me to use "BY LUFICER'S BEARD" when I stubbed my toe instead of swearing, thanks Bob.
My Favorite Simpson Character, I was searching through all your reviews of his episodes.
wait. sideshow bob wasn't in any of those early treehouse of horrors? he's so violent i thought they would have used him more!
That truly is surprising! 😨😨😨
yeah it was not till 26 he got a story focused on him. and was the only good story from that episode.
Especially Lisa! But especially Bart
Then we got one of the most chilling one liners in the show.
m.ua-cam.com/video/KlivA1ExIEA/v-deo.html
Bart: Now everyone wants me to be in that coffin instead of you!
Bob(slowly opens the coffin): Then lets give the people... WHAT THEY WANT!!!
Call me edgy, but sideshow bob episodes need to have a dark atmosphere like Cape Feare. Its kinda like the invader zim in the simpsons. A goofy show suddently becomes surprisingly dark and serious out of nowhere in a way it makes sense, while still having goofy moments here and there.
i never thought about it this way, but you're absolutely right... and that line still gives me chills every time i hear it
Cape feare kinda sucks
@@goldenfiberwheat238 why?
Corto Maltese idk I guess I just think the ending is kinda dumb. The writers wrote themselves into a corner so they’re like “let’s make sideshow bob sing for hours”
@@goldenfiberwheat238 yeah, its a bit forced, but it makes sense. Yeah, the ending couldve been better, but the jokes in the episode are very good and the atmosphere has that sweet invader zim-esque mix between kid friendly and horror at times.
That's it, we need a Sideshow Mel episode now!
Yeah!
I suddenly have an urge to listen to the HMS Pinafore in its entirety.
No never
Very well, groove. I shall send you to heaven before I send you to hell.
And a two, and a three, and...
7:55 Considering his hatred of TV, he's likely one of those holier than thou types who think comics have no artistic value
I'll be honest:
I think Sideshow Bob has an almost perfect record of episodes.
So about The Bob Next Door:
I don't mind it. I think the 'I don't care if you don't have a face!' gag is very funny.
It's a mess, but it's funny.
i liked "The Bob next door" because it was actually about Bob and not his stupid family
I think the problem with Sideshow Bob in the later seasons is that after his redemption episode they didn't really know what to do with him, so they just kept jumping back and fourth from him being redeemable, to him being even more evil than before.
Sideshow Bob was such a necessary Simpsons histories character. Would love to see one on either Chief Wiggum or Willie
Don't touch Willie.
@@221b Good advice
i think a shelbyville history would be AMAZING.
Can you cover Moe in a future video? He’s one of my favorite characters in the show.
Moe might be my favorite character in the show. I relate so much to him.
I actually feel so bad for Moe in some of his scenes
"Bake him away toys."
What did you say, Chief?
12:30 After all of the modern episodes we've gotten with Bob, I think the writers should experiment with having him just be one of the various background characters that shows up from time to time. They could probably get away with recording Grammer's lines once a season to spread across multiple episodes, not unlike what they did with Phil Hartman.
I've never found a palm tree so attractive-
Also I really wish they'd bring Francesca and Gino back. He deserves to have his happy family life 😔
With his many many complex scemes Sideshow Bob is by far one of the best villain types of the animation universe.
personally I love the Great Louse Detective "how can one man have SO many enemies?"
I’ve been waiting for this since I’ve started watching you. I did a literal double take when I saw this in my recommended
I kinda agree. The Great Louse Detective would've been a good finale to Sideshow Bob's evil plans.
I was thinking about if you had made a Sideshow Bob Simpsons Histories yesterday another amazing video like always love this series and your videos keep up the great work :) also, I agree Shelbyville would be a good topic for this series.
Kirk would be fun, but now I want to see a SIdeshow Mel episode
Thanks for uploading this. Sideshow Bob is one of my favourite characters. Too many awesome moments to mention unfortunately.
Speaking of next characters to analyse, Professor Frink would be a great choice.
The rake joke will always be a classic
I've been watching your videos a while now, love them lots. keep them up dude. I'm from Cambridge, England.
I’ve been binging all your videos all week. I was so happy when this popped up
Soon, we’ll have an episode where Sideshow Bob is the one being targeted by a killer when they’re getting stuck for ideas.
Is it bad that I like the idea?
Corto Maltese It’d be interesting to see Sideshow Bob be the one being threatened instead of him being the threat for a change and you could play with the character dynamics that way. It’s how they’ll execute it is my concern.
Maybe Bob discovers someone else is planning to kill Bart and decides to protect him because of both Bob's possessiveness and strange attachment to Bart.
That's actually interesting. The (attempted) killer becomes the target.

The Sideshow Bob musical theme is actually the musical theme for the 1962 "Cape Fear", composed by Bernard Herrmann
i know i comment this every simpsons histories video but i would like to see kirk.
as for sideshow bob, i think the reason he always worked well was because his character was so grounded with a love of the theatrics. post season 8, he's basically a super villain.
I always wondered why he didnt just quit being on the Krusty show.
He desperately wanted to run the show. In act 3 he creates a kid show that is better than Krusty's in every way. It just so happens he is also a criminal psychopath.
@@tbirddddd " itchy and scratchy will still have a home here."
bob isnt that much of a monster.
pride and vanity basically. It was easier to frame krusty for a crime and steal his show to become the center of attention, than it was to just quit and find a new job.
As an actor, I never wondered...
SIDESHOW BOB!!! How on earth did I not think of you making this ages ago hes such a great character
"Very Well, I shall send you to heaven, before I send you to hell" " and a one and a two and A We sail the ocean blue and our saucy ship's a beauty"

funnily enough, I thnk that face scared me as a child XD

Thanks! He's one of my favorite characters 👍
"I have a life outside of killing you, Bart." - Sideshow Bob on the rakes.
best channel on youtube thank you for all this great content
I've been waiting for this for a loooooong time.
Your certainly hit the nail when you said that the writers seem to try to relieve the old glory days, failing and only being nostalgic about what used to be twenty years ago but has sadly gone. The fact is it's not just with Bob, but something more general, as you also clearly said somewhere else.
The very moment I saw the notification I was here. Sideshow bob is amazing.
Great work ass always man! I think Groundskeeper Willie or Superintendent chalmers would be great for the next one.
7:55 I always wondered what the story was between him and Comic Book Guy.
Lol I'm just surprised you haven't done one about Sideshow Bob already.
He was saving the best character for the best time of year!~ 😄😄😄
been waiting for this one... my favorite character :)
“Turns out it’s some guy named Frank Grimes Jr. “
I lol’d hard 😂
Never liked that twist... XD
