This way Barney would have the complete family he always wanted, and Robin could raise a child with the love and compassion that she never had. As far as Ted’s ending, he should’ve just stayed single after Tracy died. His arc was about accepting that life is never as perfect as you want it to be, nor is it as simple and clean. Him ending up with Robin at the end by using the same pick-up routine and romantic gesture just demolished everything he learned by stating the opposite. Now, before anyone says, “Robin doesn’t want kids.” We see time and time again, through Future Ted’s monologue and Robin’s experience with learning she can’t have kids, that she eventually not only warms up to the idea, but becomes an amazing pseudo parent. Barney had an... okayish ending, but it didn’t give him that thing he was always searching for even when he didn’t know it. Barney’s arc was about living, not only for himself and the moment, but for those he loved and the future. We learn through his flashbacks and his reaction to his daughter, that he always longed for a full and complete family. The perfect ending for Barney would be the standard American household. Given the Mom is the breadwinner instead of the dad and the kid is adopted, but that is adjustments for the better that reflect the non-cookie cutter way of life. There’s not much to say about Marshall and Lily as their arcs end after their argument about Rome and nothing happens for them in the final episode.
