      Forrest, I habitually rewatch your Reacteria series and something occurred to me today when watching your Matt Powell (Biologist vs Bigot) video. Could it be said (easier to explain to people who don't understand it) that evolution is a form of the "Ship of Theseus" thought experiment where the ship's structure/design changes to match the weather of its hyperthetical non-stop sea voyage? Or is this too open to the "a design requires a designer" biblical argument?

    • @pogers625
      @pogers625 2 місяці тому

      @morlath4767 honestly, I think you might have just made it more complicated. I don't think you need a metaphor or thought experiment to understand evolution it's a pretty simple concept. If someone doesn't understand it, they don't want to.

    I work in Cardiology and want to expand on 9:45, because Forrest really brought out some fascinating information. Our arteries/arterioles have some great muscle surrounding them. This muscle is what allows for vascular contraction. However the return flow in veins and venules lack proper muscle to throughly put the blood back into the heart. Your return blood supply rely on three things: the existing momentum from the arterial system, muscle contraction (exercise), and body position. The first and last one will do the job, but are *not* a good way to rely on good vascular support.
    That's where exercise comes in. In your legs your muscles are, for the most part voluntary, meaning you have to contract the muscle yourself. These muscles when you walk end up pushing the blood in your veins back to your heart. That's why walking 30 minutes a day is amazing for your cardiac and vascular system. That's also why if you are or know pilot's or freight truckers are more prone to DVTs, or deep vein thrombosis. These professionals have to go through routine screening because last thing you want is a pilot/trucker having a clot come loose and ending up having a heart attack/stroke.
    The best thing about this information? The process is called "skeletal milking." Because the process our muscles squeezing the blood up is akin to the motion of milking a cow.
    So do yourself a favor and spend 30 minutes every day milking your skeleton!

    • @Naafidy
      @Naafidy 2 місяці тому

      @Macachee Skeletal muscle pumping is the action of using muscles to aid the movement of blood back to the heart. It's not "exercise," but instead a process that requires movement. You don't need to exercise to do this, just walk.

    As a ballet teacher, I preach this insight every day. I am constantly using my arms to illustrate concepts related to the legs. Dancers develop a conscious association between the component parts of the arms and legs early on and use our arms to visualize all kinds of leg movements. Most have the habit of using their hands instead of their feet when memorizing new material, transposing that material to their feet only after it has been learned by the hands. Correct alignments of the ankle and tarsal joints are also learned by using one’s hands to explore particular relationships between the various components of the foot.
    I could go on for ever about the importance for a dancer to learn and take advantage of this relationship.
