- Five aromatic pipe tobacco blends that are among my favorites that every pipe smoker should try.
McClelland - Holiday Spirit
MacBaren - Vanilla Cream
Sutliff - Molto Dolce
Pipes & Cigars - Butternut Burley
Gawith Hoggarth - Bob's Chocolate Flake
I love your videos. You seem laid back and like a normal person that you could sit down and talk to
When I resumed pipe smoking after a forty year hiatus, the first aromatic blend I tried was Molto Dolce. I moved on after two tins, but it's a great starting point. I finally settled on Sutliff Barbados Plantation. Thanks for your video.
Solid reviews man. Love the detail all around covering the question basis.
Love the passion on the molto dolce review! I bought a tin because of it. Great stuff!
PipenFalzy hahawhen he said Ghost 👻 away ... priceless 😂 I love that stuff
MacBaren Vanilla Cream is one of my all-time-favorite !!! THE BEST Vanilla i´ve ever smoked !!! Thank you for this cool Video and Greetings from Austria !!! Cheers :D
Alexandra Kormos i also enjoyed Black Ambrosia. I haven’t tried the Vanilla Cream but would love to try some.
I liked your reviews of aromatic, I will have to try Molto Dolce and buy a special pipe just for that blend. Thanks once again, good review.
Cool, thanks for the list. I'm always looking for a few aromatic blends to keep my wife happy, while also being a good blend for me.
Hey Doug, wonderful to see you again! If your looking at Boswell's, Chocolate Cream is amazing. Not overly done, just great. You hit the nail on the head with these recommendations. Looking forward to the series.

Thanks for the suggestions. Might give that Butternut Burly a try
Out of the 5 I have smoked I had to order 3 from P&C can't wait. Great Vid.
Thanks for the well done reviews!
I have tried GH Bobs Chocolate Flake, and agree with you that it is a fine tobacco. The combo of Dark Cocoa, Latakia, and "Essence" is great. If you enjoy that floral thing, may I suggest GH Ennerdale Flake as well. Sweet Virginia, Almond, and Floral/Vanilla. Very good as well. Thanks. Ed
Thank you . I'll have to try some of these
My all time favourite is Bob's Chocolate Flake... amazing tobacco.
I never was an aero fan, having started pipe smoking badly with some BR Cherry Liqueur. Boiled my tongue, ruined my first pipe etc. I have learned a couple things regarding aeros of any stripe:1. Go slowly. Hauling hard on a pipeful of aromatics destroys the aromas, makes the tobacco sweat a lot of condensation into your pipe and will cause hot spots in the tobacco chamber and on your sensitive mouth tissues. 2. The more propylene glycol (PG) used in the aero, the hotter and nastier it will smoke.3. Aromatics do not really benefit from cellaring. Often, the humectants and flavors separate from the leaf, leving a goopy smell-puddle in the bottom of the jar or tin.4. Not all aromatics are equal. English smokers and English law define aeros differently than we do in the U.S.A. (i.e. casing or toppings are not required to call a tobacco an "aromatic."), and Scandinavian and Dutch aeros are another animal still.5. Here's a controversial idea for many American smokers: Filtered pipes are almost de rigeur when smoking aromatics. Until you learn to adjust your smoking style to suit the characteristics of the tobacco, a filter will save your tongue from bit and from the harsh edges produced by some aeros (particularly O.T.C. gems like the aforementioned Borkum Riff). If you use the Medico 6 mm. paper filter, you need to change it every third bowlful or so, your mileage may vary.6. Not all aeros will automatically appeal to your spouse/roomie/sex slave. A room note listed as "pleasant" or "very pleasant" on tobaccoreviews.com is not a guarantee that others will *like** your smoke. I was smoking a tobacco that I thought would please my wife and avoid complaints...she walked in and asked, "Where's the urinal cake?" This begs two questions, one of which is...how the hell does my wife know how a urinal deodorizing cake smells? 7. I may have mentioned....GO SLOWLY, especially with an unfamiliar aromatic. My 6 Nicaraguan cordobas' worth/2 cents U.S.
Thanks for the video. Just ordered 3 of these
I tried the Molto Dulce because of this video. It’s incredible!!
I'm a new pipe smoker, and I'm on my second tin of Molto Dolce. It is really really good.
Holiday Spirit is the bomb! Love that stuff. I was pretty bummed after I finished my tin, that I couldn't find it again. Sold out everywhere.... I hope to get at least 6 tins this year. 👍
I LOVE Scotty's Butternut Burley! The scent and flavor reminds me of Virgils Rootbeer.
You can also get it PipesandCigars or 4 Noggins.
Thanks for sharing. I also love the Molto Dolce. I also like the Sutliff Mountain Pass and they have a bulk blend that is a great deal like Lolto Dolce. It is called Vanilla Custard and that is some great stuff. If you haven't tried it, you really should.
These all sound like I might like them. I’m new to the hobby, so I haven’t tried a lot of stuff yet. I’m most excited to try the Holiday Spirt or the butternut burley
Molto Dolce....my all time favorite! I have a dedicated pipe for it! I share the same enthusiasm as you when it comes to that tobacco!
I'm not normally an aromatic tobacco smoker, but I do have three selections from Boswell and one from Mac Baren, the Vanilla Cream by they way. I do enjoy them from time to time. It seems the older they get, the better they get for me. I highly recommend Boswell Chocolate Cream; an excellent aromatic that smells like brownies and taste just like coco to me. It's my favorite aromatic. Nice review.
Boswell truly knows how to produce an aromatic tobacco! I was extremely pleasantly surprised when I tasted Boswell’s Raspberry Cream! I am normally not a fan of any type of “berry” flavored tobacco but this has that secret Boswell crack/cocaine mixture in it.
I love the chocolate flavor of No Bite Delight as well!
For goop control I've been using the Nording Keystones with all of my tobaccos, both aromatic and english blends. Place four or five of these natural clay pellets in the bottom of any pipe and away you go plus they compensate for my lack of pipe packing technique.
Just ordered some or that Molto Dulce, look forward to trying it out.
That MacBaron Vanilla Cream is my favorite during Christmas time
Great video brother. 👊
i have one tin of the 2016 Holiday Spirit...and also one tin of each of the Christmas Cheer from 2015 and 2016...have yet to try them..waiting til December.
I was on the fence on molte dolce thanks for the review brother
My favorite
I have a 2011 tin of gh choc flake. Just havent had the courage to crack it bc I've heard its not exactly a "chocolate flake" like you would think. Butternut burley is good stuff. Youve got me convinced on molto. And those tins are cheap. Have to keep in mind holiday spirit. And ya gotta try some boswell aros. They really have a main seat amonst the top aromatics. Berry cobbler, majestic 586, pa dutch treat. I still want to try choc cream, sweet tea, xmas cookie and well...many more. Great vid doug! Take care
Picking up pipe smoking again after a long break of a failed attempt. Funny though, I watched this video almost a year ago and just picked up Holiday Spirit and Butternut Burley.
thanks for the advice..i just got into pipe smoking again..and was strictly doing the dunhill..but i wanted to try the aromatics..after ur vid..went to pipesandcigars and got some dolce and the vanilla..and lane 1q since everybody was raving about it
Glad to hear you enjoyed the video. Hope you like the aromatics.
-Doug
Great review, nicely descriptive about aromatics, which maybe grow in popularity a bit in recent years. I tried hard to get some Holiday Blend or Christmas Cheer from McClelland but its all sold out or only on ebay for a real high price and shipping to Switzerland is the same amount again. I heard the rumour end of 2018, that now McClelland is folding...a great loss for aromatics😥Still, I did get some Peterson 2017 Christmas Blend from Germany, so it can be done😌
mc clelland had some great virginias and english blends too, RIP. i bought about 30 mc tins while i was in belgium back in 2016 which btw had customs duties at a ridiculous 60% on the purchase value. but what the heck, i paid the post office and got the tins at home. indeed today, tins i bought back then at 15-17$ sell on ebay at 100$. i cellar them for consumption over the next 10 years, if i am alive of course hahahah :)
That’s a damn good review. Thx
Awesome video man.
Hello, I don't venture to far from VA's or VA / perique not a big fan of Latakia , but I tried Gawith Hoggarth Bob's Chocolate Flake , didn't know what to think of it a first by the third bowl I love it , like you said love or hate it , Thanks Mike
I am all with you on that Sutliff MD! For me, it's THE best blend I've ever tasted. Absolutely awesome!!! Great video, I have some new blends to try now :P
If you're keen to save yourself a few bucks, Sutliff Creme Brulee is the bulk equivalent of MD, but maybe a little less robust because it's not tinned.
Your first two were great choices. Non-aromatic guys have their reasons and I respect that but every great once in a while a nice aromatic like MB Vanilla Creame is a dream. If you like Holiday Spirit you might like Cornell and Diehl Corncob pipe and a Button Nose.
Wanting to get into pipe smoking and great video with a personality I can match so thank you!
Glad you found it helpful. Cheers.
-Doug
Thanks for sharing your top 5 aromatics. Never tried Bob's chocolate but I can think of a few aromatic blends which include latakia such as Sail green which is dirt cheap and not bad and has a fantastic room note by the way, Independence by Dan Tobacco, Cult Conspirary, Zeppelin by Vauen and Westmorland mixture by Sam Gawith. There are also quite a few English aromatics per se, such as Frog Morton Cellar and On Town, Mac Baren Plumcake and Solent Mixture and many more. Have you tried Two Friends English Chocolate? It might be right up your alley.
No I haven't, but it sounds like something I'd like. Thanks for watching and the suggestions.
-Doug
Ever try Mac Barens Original Choice? Bought a tin and before I finished the bowl,I ordered a 1 lb bag. Enough said🤐👍
Great video
I love Butternut Burley. Great everyday smoke. As a note butternut is not butterscotch. Butternut is a type of tree also called white wall nut. The nuts can be processed to produce a tan buttery substance that can be used as a dye. No idea why the tobacco is called this.
This is a good video and can’t wait to try a few of these. I know this is an old video but maybe they put the year so you know your buying the recent yearly release and not an old tin from a prior year.
Also skip to 1:30 lol
I smoked Half and Half when I started smoking a pipe, and then, Kentucky Club (white burley) I love that smell best of all the different Tobacco's that I have stuffed in a bowl. two others I used to smoke was Sir Walter Raleigh, Carter Hall. I am one of those people that when I walk into a soap/candle store that, gets an instant headache BOOM ! so I stayed away from Aromatics for the most part, Captain Black, Borkum Riff and others, I always thought that I had a bitter taste with any Cherry that I tried. Right now, I don't smoke but, hell I'll be 77 next month and may not have too much time to enjoy a few good bowls, to each his/her own!
Try Boswell's pa Dutch treat it's wonderful
thanks for the tip on packing the wetter blends... ive been having a little trouble with grossness/tarry/flavorless issues in the last third or half of the bowl. i only been smoking pipe for six or 8 months. im gonna have to try that loose pack with ZBC and others that are wetter...SUNSET RUM! maybe wetter than molte doce ? ive yet to try it...i wish tbey have it in bulk. maybe it is sunset rum?
oh, i wanted to ask if you tried laying out the molte doce to dry for a couple days.? would that help?
But BTW, despite my horrible start with aromatics, I now love many, and these are in my "rotation," which rather than being circular is more of a wobbly, you've got a bad bearing in there sort of rotation...
Nice video ...creme brûlée is the same blend in bulk btw
Very enjoyable
Would you give any of those an Okay to use as a RYO cigarette tube? Or recommend pipe smoking only?
To go the RYO path, I would try the Butternut Burley. I suspect the cut of that blend would be easiest to roll. The others are cut more to be smoked in a pipe. Thanks for watching.
-Doug
Where can I buy these?? I live in washington and apparently you cant purchase tobacco online:/
well done thank you . . .
Hi everyone, new guy here. Does anyone have any suggestions for an inexpensive way to try many different blends! Thanks

I'm just not getting enough nicotine from Aeros. Any suggestions for flavor and nicotine fix.?
The aromatics that I have tried have all been fairly low in nicotine. From what I've read, many rope tobacco's (e.g. Gawith Hoggarth's Happy Brown Bogie) can have a heavy dose of nicotine. Rope tobacco is not considered an aromatic but some come flavored. I've never tried rope tobacco so can't recommend a flavored one.
I think the year is given because tobaccos (like fine wine) gets better with age. I bet you've heard of people Cellering their tobacco. Many Smokers want their favorite Blends to age for five years before smoking them.
So the McClelland Holiday Spirit Blend you showed may be the same to you, IMO the oldest Blend may just give you a better smoke. I look for the age of the tobaccos when I buy and buy the oldest first. It's too bad that all makers don't put the age on their packaging.
Doug! Where are you? Looking forward to another video, its been over a year. Hope things are well and enjoy your vids.
Thanks for checking on me. I'm still here, just haven't had much to talk about that is pipe related. Guess I'm just taking a break from making vids for awhile.
Ive never like "English/Natural" blends.
They were always "woody" or "heavy" to me.
I recently tried Boswell "Apple Strudel"
I like it. Also tried their "Chocolate Cream".
Both pretty pleasant.
If you've never tried lane 1q, I promise it would make your list. In my option, the best tobacco ever.
i just started smoking pipes and I was wondering what pipes are best for aromatics. I'm assuming a thick bowl for the heat any suggestions would be helpful ty
In my experience there is no particular pipe shape or material that is always best for aromatics. I have briar, meerschaum and corncob pipes, some are big and some are small. They all do fine with aromatic pipe tobacco. The best way to prevent the bowl from getting hot is to puff slowly. If that means the pipe goes out and you have to light it again, then so be it. This will also bring out the aromatic taste and smell more.
-Doug
If you think you're sipping your pipe, and smoking slowly...sip easier. It will stay cool, and you will get the flavor from any pipe. Try a cob too. They stay nice and cool.
Corncobs. I have 3 that i use for testing new tobaccos... One for burleys, one for aros, etc
thanks dude, ill have to check these out, though i think ive trued the sutluffe blend.. local tobacconist carrues it and its yummy as hell, im out and need more bahaha. never head a problem with packing it, stays lut and tastes good
Wonderful blends! Agree with ya, definitely good smokes!
Hearth&Homes grandma caramel apple pie. Try it trust me only aromatic I've liked so far, but I'm going to try out your suggestions. Aromatics help me smoke around my wife.
I love Molto Dolce . I wish it came in bulk but unfortunately it doesn't . Pipes and Cigars told me that bulk Creme Brulee is the bulk equivalent aromatic tobacco . Any one like Creme Brulee ?
Yes. It's as good as MD and available in bulk. Also, their Tobacco Galleria has an equivalent, but I forget the name. BTW, the Lakeland scent, rose geranium oil, occasionally a bit of Tonka bean extract and/or bergamot is an acquired taste, but if one acquires it, there's much pleasure to be had. One of my favorite aeros for *occasional* smoking is G&H 'Grasmere Flake,' which scents the air like a florist's shop, roses, violets, geraniums and carnations, each of which reveals itself at different levels in the bowl. The Gawith clan, whether SG or G&H produce many fine examples of the style...and they are decidedly aromatic, even in the so-called "unscented" versions.
Paul Shallbetter hey good to see a familiar face. I love nasal snuff with bergamot might have to try it in a pipe.
Hey are you still making videos??????! Sure liked this one !!! I’m an aromatic smoker .👍😎. Darryl
Not really. I kinda ran out of pipe smoking things to talk about that interested me. Glad you enjoyed. Unfortunately many of these blends are no longer made.
i have just a question. im new to pipe smoking. if you press your wet goopy tobaccos, would it burn better or at least get rid of the goopy mess.
No. It would likely pack the tobacco so tightly together it would never really dry out and make it very difficult to load your pipe properly. Better to pull out a small amount and air dry it for a few hours to a few days (depends on how humid it is where you live). That is what I do.
Just making sure i understand this correctly sir, i dry a small amount. Then i pack that small air dried amount last after the wet goopy tobacco, so that it will light up nicely? Thank you in advance for your reply sir.
By small amount I meant just enough to fill the bowl. Its pointless to have a bowl half filled with wet goopy stuff and half filled with dry tobacco.
I'll probably try the first 4. Just being honest. If I like them then I'll buy that last one.
Does this pipe smoking stain walls as cigarettes do? Do people gripe bout 2nd hand smoke?
Also do you like Mac Baren vanilla cream?
I don't smoke my pipe as frequently as cigarette smokers do. Only once or twice a day. I make a point to sit next to an open window or smoke outside. So I have not noticed any wall staining in my home in the 15 years I have been a pipe smoker. My wife likes the smell of some of the blends and hates the smell of others. Other than her, I have not received any complaints concerning second hand smoke. MacBaren's Vanilla Cream is probably my favorite vanilla aromatic.
@Teewinot2 I totally get ya. I am a beginner as of yesterday.
I bought a maple pipe and some cherry store blend.
I did in fact just order a tin of that loose cut vanilla blend.
Subscribed btw
Where do you find a good selection of pipe tobacco? Local chain smoke shops (smokers choice etc) have terrible selection and they are all behind the counter
+Farmer Nate I buy my pipe tobacco from these two online retailers:
pipesandcigars.com
smokingpipes.com
+Farmer Nate Do not be afraid to ask your local tobacconist questions. Most love to chat about it if you have a good B&M.....

They ship worldwide.
And have a good filtering system for finding tobacco
Butternut Burley is pretty much perfect tobacco
The number one selling tobacco in the United States is apricots and Kareem look it up give it a try definitely worth a beer and a puff
What is the sweetest tasting pipe tobaccos you’ve had? Not smell purely taste.
No pipe tobacco is really very sweet tasting but Sutliff's Molto Dolce is definitely the sweetest tasting blend I've ever had.
Teewinot2 thank you! I’m definitely gonna give it a try!
Very informative and encouraging, except for the "soapy" comment about the last one. Not sure I want to smoke that! ; )
Thanks the reviews.
Pipeterian it is a strange flavor, that isn't bad, just strange. Kinda like smoking flower scented soap. In my opinion the blends would be better without the "essence", but an attempt to buy any Gawith blends will usually result in you realizing that they are sold out, so they must be liked...
I’d love to find a blend that smells like an aromatic but smokes and tastes like and english
I think Captain black Gold burns really good and leaves my bowl dry.
Try Gawith Hoggarths Cannon Plug. I rub it out and leave it overnight. It smells like a Christmas cake but smokes like good honest English tobacco
Try HGL by Lane. Best crossover I’ve ever found.
No lane 1Q ?
Completely agree Lori I cannot believe that title layoff is lying Lehman did one Q off or devils holiday you guys must try that along with my personal favorite McBarron cube my favorite out of the three is the golden boy bronze
Make Baron tobacco and Dwayne one
Matt Baron tobacco cube gold blend sorry about the mixed up messages spell correct or shall I say talk to text I had them last few messages messed up as you can tail
MacBaren -fyi.
lance johnson * Tell
Great video! My favorite is Sutliff Spicey Vanilla!
Hello Teewinot!
I think, you´re absolutely right when it comes to condemn the araomatics...thats really unintelligible. I love the McClelland - this one - and many others...especially the "best of show"...
Thanks for sharing! Take care and be well!
Have not tried any of them but now I want to! Best aromatic I have tried so far is "Solani Blend 369".... It is awesome!
I think Molto Dolce is the best aromatic.
Try Virginia cream it's good
What's ghosting a pipe. I've never smoked a pipe or anything but thinking about taking up the pipe hobby.
Ghosting can happen when you smoke a tobacco that is heavily flavored which them soaks into the briar. You will get the aftertaste (ghost ) of it when you smoke something completely different. If the ghosting is really bad it could take multiple bowls of some other tobacco before it finally goes away. This can happen with cheap aromatic tobaccos that are heavily flavored with an artificial or synthetic flavoring.
GREAT VIDEO MAN WHY DID YOU STOP..
Thanks. Had some life changes that kept me from making videos. Its also kinda hard to come up with interesting subjects besides a box opening and a tobacco review.
MY WIFE AND I LOVED YOUR VIDEOS SO WE SUBBED YOU, GET INSPIRED AND START UP AGAIN LETS HAVE FUN, WE HOPE YOUR OK.@@Teewinot2
Please return to youtube
Your comment comes at an interesting time for me. I was just thinking about doing another pipe video. I need to gather my thoughts on a particular topic a little more first. Appreciate the kind words. Cheers
-Doug
Teewinot2 Well I really hope to see you back sir! Very relaxing to watch.
it's like crack tobacco.. 😂😂😂😂😂👍👍
Get rid of the lighter and use a torch bro lites way better 😉
