  • Lyrics for Myfanwy first published in 1875 composed by Joseph Parry
Sung here 100 years later in 1975 at Swansea Top Rank by Ryan Davies
    Paham mae dicter, O Myfanwy,
    Yn llenwi'th lygaid duon di?
    A'th ruddiau tirion, O Myfanwy,
Heb wrido wrth fy ngweled i?
Pa le mae'r wên oedd ar dy wefus
    Fu'n cynnau 'nghariad ffyddlon ffôl?
Pa le mae sain dy eiriau melys,
Fu'n denu'n nghalon ar dy ôl?
Pa beth a wneuthum, O Myfanwy
I haeddu gwg dy ddwyrudd hardd?
    Ai chwarae oeddit, O Myfanwy
Â thanau euraidd serch dy fardd?
Wyt eiddo im drwy gywir amod
Ai gormod cadw'th air I mi?
Ni cheisiaf fyth mo'th law, Myfanwy,
Heb gael dy galon gyda hi.
Myfanwy boed yr holl o'th fywyd
    Dan heulwen ddisglair canol dydd.
A boed i rosyn gwridog iechyd
I ddawnsio ganmlwydd ar dy rudd.
    Anghofia'r oll o'th addewidion
A wneist i rywun, 'ngeneth ddel,
    A dyro'th law, Myfanwy dirion
I ddim ond dweud y gair "Ffarwél".
    English Lyrics
Why so the anger, Oh Myfanwy,
    That fills your dark eyes
    Your gentle cheeks, Oh Myfanwy,
    No longer blush beholding me?
Where now the smile upon your lips
That lit my foolish faithful love?
Where now the sound of your sweet words,
That drew my heart to follow you?)
What was it that I did, Oh Myfanwy,
To deserve the frown of your beautiful cheeks?
Was it a game for you, Oh Myfanwy,
This poet's golden flame of love?
You belong to me, through true promise,
Too much to keep your word to me?
I'll never seek your hand, Myfanwy,
Unless I have your heart with it.
Myfanwy, may your life entirely be
Beneath the midday sun's bright glow,
And may a blushing rose of health
Dance on your cheek a hundred years.
I forget all your words of promise
You made to someone, my pretty girl
So give me your hand, my sweet Myfanwy,
For no more but to say "farewell".

I'm a Welsh-American in the coal regions of eastern Pennsylvania, and I know these songs well. We sang them in church every St.Davids Day. Sadly, this generation no longer embraces this beautiful music.

I was 4 years old 1st July 1966, and was told of the huge sadness of 21st October. I still remenber the feeling of loss of kids like me, and still to this day feel the loss of a generation. Mefanwy is a love song, but one of sadness that brings the Sadness of that day to many. I'm a 61 year old Englishman, but Ryan still leaves me watery eyed. A phrase used many times, but lest we forget. God bless the innocents lost that day and God bless you Ryan 😪💔 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

As a small child living just outside Newport , I would watch Ryan and Ronnie. It was in Welsh. I couldn't understand what they said , yet I laughed because they were funny. Later , they spoke in English and they still made me laugh .
I was a teenager when Ryan died. I truly believe that the world is a sadder place for his passing . God knows best however, and I put my trust in him.
    Ryan sings this incredibly well.

I was at the Manics Cardiff Castle show in 2015, a very emotional show for me for many reasons, before it started they played Jungleland by Bruce Springsteen, I wanna be sedated by the Ramones and this by Ryan Davies. It was incredible, I turned to the girl I was with and said, I can't think of anywhere else in the world where those three songs would turn up on a pre-show playlist. I balled my eyes out before the show even started!

I too, feel that this is the absolute, best version of this song & I have heard a lot of really good ones. The only other one that I feel that comes anywhere near Ryan' version, is the one, where the Miners sing it in How Green Is My Valley. I learnt the words, in Welsh of course, to the Ryan' version & sang it to my Girlfriend (no music), whilst holding her gently in my arms...she is Australian & didn't understand the words, but felt the passion, had tears in her eyes & held me closer...but absolutely loved it (and we are no spring chickens) :) I am about to start carving a Welsh Love Spoon for her & planning to sing this song again to her, as I present the finished Welsh Love Spoon to her, then formerly, ask her to become my Wife.

He hasn't the greatest voice but more than makes up for it with the passion, the hwyl he displays, with that crystal clear enunciation of the lyrics it makes for a wonderful rendition of this beautiful song. A multi-talented man, his death when so young was a great loss for all in Wales.

Interesting comment Rhiannon, I suppose we're all different but to me I would rate that as THE best rendition I have ever heard, bar none. To me his voice is silky smooth and utterly beautiful. Maybe you are speaking technically and if so I'm not qualified to argue that point, but for me that was the complete performance. God bless.

My grandmother was named Myfanwy, people called her Vano. This song was played at her funeral and at the time I thought... I'd like to learn the words to this.
In the summer of 2019 I listened to almost every rendition of it on youtube and wrote the words out on an A4 sheet.
I listened to the singing while reading back the words probably 100s of times.
Even after not thinking about it for months and months I can still remember the words.
Just wish i could sing ! Haha

Great. Song ÷ Ryan a Ronnie. Whole family loved Welsh Ryan a Ronnie in Leeds, 1960s. Loved Ph Phyllis Doris, loved the slicing of the loaf of bread hugged to the chest. Great comedian. Shouldn't have died so young.
