  • Twenty-two birds from all over the country were sent to compete in a unique race series. They will compete as my team but also against each other. The course they will race is through the Nevada desert and over the Sierra Nevada mountains. Follow along as we begin the next stage of their preparation. We are preparing for races that will start in August.

    THAT is how it’s done folks! Very cool to see their progress over such a short time period. Those 7 older birds looked great. Nicely done Sir Tom!

      The tunnel system definitely works, especially if you're this patient with it.

      Great job Tom pushing the birds along, but enough time spent on RFRP's bird! Nepotism isn't going to get his bird to beat mine! 😅🤣😂

      I dabble in the bees, I have hived three swarms this spring, the one you see and two others I gave to other guys. There have been over 65 plus swarm calls come in to the beekeeping association in Sacramento area this year.

    Birds are doing good! Question? Why don't you chip the birds and use the clock when they go out so you don't have to keep going inside and count birds to see how many have made it back in? Would make it much easier. Just a thought.

    • @littleloftonthehill
      @littleloftonthehill  3 місяці тому +1

      I know right! I loaned my clock and antenna to a new flyer to use for old birds. 3 of 8 races in. Not sure if he will hold out for all the races.

    Perhaps getting a little ahead but what do you do to "control the molt" of the young birds?

    • @littleloftonthehill
      @littleloftonthehill  3 місяці тому +1

      I have them on lights, automatic... turns on at midnight off at 8 AM, natural sunset. Around 20+ hours of light. I will cut the lights sometime in June, pull the middle 4 tail feathers, 9th and 10th flight. By the time my races start the end of August they will have completed the body molt. When I turn off the lights they will go from around 20 hrs to 14 hrs which will trigger the body molt.

      Do you stop loft flying and/or tosses until feathers have fully grown back? My Dad use to fly years ago but hopefully getting back into it with my kids this coming year. Great videos

      @@derekromer2204@derekromer2204 Last year, I locked them down for four weeks; this year, I might continue to let them out to loft fly, but no road training. Before I turn off the lights, I want to get them out to 25 miles or so north, south, east, and west of the loft.
