All of my usgi canteen cups are stainless steel, it's rare for me to even run across one of the aluminum cups. Tons of the steel ones at surplus stores alot cheaper than ebay. Alot of people do want the long folding handles but they are getting gone quick. I like both styles depending on what I'm using it for. Cooking i want the long handle otherwise the butterfly handles are quite comfortable for my coffee. I like using a potted meat can with holes punched around the rim with hand sanitizer for fuel gel, it's piled up everwhere and some thrift stores are just plain giving away or 50 cents a bottle and thats like a big bottle. Perfect fuel thats cheap and has many uses including disinfecting scrapes and cuts.
They are very handy & convenient. I tour on a motorcycle in Australia. A water bottle, canteen cup & stove/stand nest together. Basic & brilliant. Thank you for sharing 👍
Good video I have the Nalgene with a genuine usgi stainless steel cup with stove and got a lid from self reliance outfitters / pathfinder that fits the canteen cup bought a new camo cover all works great
Good video, just a few things: - my set up is a Pathfinder canteen set, Nalgene with a second Pathfinder cup lid & stove, and either 4 USGI 1 qt or 2 USGI 2 qt canteens (I like the hard ones from Hayes Tooling & Plastics, Inc) on my pack. Rothco also has the MOLLE 2 qt pouches. - my authentic USGI canteens don't leak only the knock offs - take an Xacto knife and clean up the flashings from the molding process that should stop the leaks on USGI type canteens, if it is still then use the M1 NBC cap they have a rubber gasket in them or go to ACE Hardware and get a rubber gasket that fits in your cap - bat wing US Army cups are stainless not aluminum - US Army cups fit the Nalgene - You have to tweak the tabs on the M1942 folding handle cups with needle nose pliars then they they only come undone when you want them to see Dave Canterburys canteen video for a how to - I have them but I am not a fan of Rothco lids Pathfinder lids are cheap they fit USGI cups & knock offs and no sharp edges on the holes - Pathfinder now has cups with bat wing handles that fit USGI & Nalgene Canteens (also a little larger) they still have the folding handle cups now with D rings for a stick handle - If you have the need USGI M1 NBC caps will fit on the Nalgene canteen
I have two go-to recipes for canteen cup cooking. The first is Ramen. One pack of Ramen noodles and seasoning plus some shredded or chopped up beef jerky. Easy peasy. The other is Spam and grits, which is just about as simple when using food packaged in retort pouches.
I bought a set in 2014 after seeing West Point graduates use them while we were in Infantry BOLC. 9 years later a deployment and two trips to NTC; 1 I looks as good as when I bought it, the other is a little scuffed but still very usable. The water defiantly tastes better and you can see when they need cleaning which is very rare.
I just recently had the same experience with the plastic canteens. Put 4 of them in my pack for a camping trip the day after. That day when I woke up, pack was soaked. It’s like the cap unthreaded Magically 😂
Interesting video. 👍🏼 I’ve been carrying a military canteen cup in stainless steel since 1977. Still have the first one I got back then. Have a couple more, including the Pathfinder kit. I’ve tried the bottle setup. I have, and like, the Pathfinder kit, but it’s just not as satisfying to me. I carry two canteens with cups, and one canteen cup stove, because I like to cook my meal in one, and have my hot, or cold, beverage in the other. Plus with two canteens on your belt, the weight is more evenly distributed.
Like you I started out with military surplus gear, I used and still have several of the AF survival 499 knife, that was my main carry, back in those days I didn’t know anything bout bushcraft but I was a lover of the outdoors, canoeing, camping, hiking, I was actually doing some bushcraft skills and didn’t know it, bout four year’s ago I replaced my old canteens with those nalgene canteens, I really like them, no more nasty taste, l would like to get that Rothko cup. I know what you mean by nostalgia,I love using my military surplus gear, I’ve had the modern stuff but I always go back to my basics , currently that’s what I have been doing. Also using my old school military gear brings me back to a more simpler time when I was younger. In addition to this gear I always have my Serrera cup that I have used for many years on all my trips. Good video
The Pathfinder cup with lid better than even the USGI cup way better than the Rothco I have all three brands, bat wing & folding handle, I will never buy another Rothco cup
Thanks Dan for the video. Yeah, I picked up one of those surplus canteens and could not stand the taste either. These days it is titanium water bottles with nesting cups. Also see that Grayl Water Filters now has a titanium option that you can also boil in the outer shell and has butterfly handles, but it is soooooo expensive.
for situations where you have to pack extra water did you know Nalgene now have 42 oz Tritan cylindrical bottles as to their availability in your area I cannot say but I'm in UK and I got mine through Amazon
Pathfinder lids tend to be the better fit for usgi cups but you may go through 10 cups at a surplus store until you find one your lid fits perfectly. 2 reasons for this, both the lids and the cups tend to be slightly different and inconsistent in factory stamping. But it's a easy fix with a little forced flexing of the cup to mate with the lid. Just lay it on it's side and carefully bare down small amounts of pressure and constantly check with lid for a better fit. You'll have her right in no time. There also is the fact that usgi cups were made by many companies at times with their own design setups resulting in slight differences usually around the top rim.
I like my Nalgene bottles & I’ve had a Oasis canteen for several years with no issues, these things are tough. Knorr makes a great dry tomato soup mix. I divide the package in half for a canteen cup portion & you can add so many extra items like dried hamburger meat, extra vegetables, hardtack 😂. Make it thick or thin whatever way you like it, great base for you favourite soup. I like to make up a soup & have it with a small bannock & coffee. 🔥🇨🇦
Well I just checked on the Tomato Veg soup & it looks like they don’t make that one anymore. They do have others & it works out pretty cheap when dividing it up.
We carried two of these 1 qt. canteens plus two 2-qt. canteens while I was in the Rangers (this was before CamelBak bladders was invented). As I gained more experience as a backpacker and bushcrafter, I learned that metal water bottles were and remai superior to plastic bottles. So I am not much of a fan of the plastic G.I. 1 quart canteens and civilian versions. Some metal canteens cost about the same as those plastic canteens. Obviously Kleen Kanteen bottles will cost more, but there are plenty of generic brands out there that are very inexpensive. Metal canteens are also more useful, they can be put into a fire to disinfect water and plastic canteens can't, yes I know that you can boil water in the cup. Metal canteens can also be used for making char cloth, obviously plastic canteens cannot. So I always recommend single wall stainless steel bottles with metal cups, or my preferred choice of titanium bottles and cups. And of course don't forget about the Grayl Geopress bottles and filters, albeit the most expensive item mentioned so far.
Yea. Not a fan of Rothco. Average usgi surplus canteen cup is way way way better quality, and not much more expensive. The only issue is that there is no lid unless your lucky enough to of gotten a heavy cover. Either way. Screw rothco. Love Nalgene canteens
Too expensive at $16. They used to be like $8 a year ago. For slightly over what they a charging now you could get a pretty nice brand name stainless steel bottle.

Sounds like you have a great setup!
The military surplus stainless steel canteen cups are better then anything you mentioned lol
Wish I had a couple
Well done Dan!! Good to see their starting to get the Nalgene Oasis bottles back in stock. Thanks for sharing!!
I've had one of those canteens for almost 5 years now I wouldn't give it up for nothing are the best
Thank You!
Thank you for watching!

- US Army cups fit the Nalgene
- You have to tweak the tabs on the M1942 folding handle cups with needle nose pliars then they they only come undone when you want them to see Dave Canterburys canteen video for a how to
- I have them but I am not a fan of Rothco lids Pathfinder lids are cheap they fit USGI cups & knock offs and no sharp edges on the holes

Lots of good information. Thanks!
Any USGI canteen cup made after 1942 is stainless steel.
Thanks for making this video Dan! Good info. I see Pathfinder has a bat wing handle cup now too! Cheers from Canada
Thanks for watching! Yes , I like the new handle!
Guess I’m lucky I can get the USGI stainless steel canteen cup made in America for around $15. I’ve never bought a aluminum one.
Thanks for the reminder, Dan-nostalgia, old school, simplify-and have fun!! If it ain’t fun, our kids and grandkids won’t want to follow us afield.
Very true.

Nice! And Thank You for your service!
This was the canteen I used on a 28 day survival course in Utah. Performed great, no matter how full of tadpoles or sandy the water was
Nice! I'm guessing B.O.S.S.?
@@ochocobushcraft1742yup you got it
@@ochocobushcraft1742 you got it!
This is awesome. Sometimes the nostalgia is worth the wierd taste. Lol
i cracked a nalgene canteen putting it in the freezer but it was otherwise fine and a nice compact water source for me in school.
Thank you😺
You're welcome 😊
Pathfinder has batwings too
Great video thanks for sharing

I can't say I have ever had a leaky USGI canteen, my oldest is 1972 and newest is 2016.
Nice! I didn't have such luck
@@ochocobushcraft1742 fun fact, the 1972 is also made in Canada!
@@turtlewolfpack6061 Several countries made that style plastic canteen.
USGI don't leak unless they are broken, Knock offs do, you have clean off the molding flashing with an Xacto knife ( piss poor quality control)

Just a quick note.
The Rothco cup lid does not fit the US cup.

It was good when it was under $10, but now they doubled the price at nalgene so its not worth it. There are better options.
Yeah old school failed me , don’t have time to deal with mold . So I got the Nalgene one way better
Nice!
