I remember watching this particular show in 1981.The Devo segment aired the day of the concert. The concert was at the Met Center in Bloomington. I was 16 and it was the first concert I ever attended. I was a huge Devo fan and still am.

I graduated high school in 1981 and throughout my teen years and even now as an old man, listened to metal and hard rock. Never got into DEVO. Now, I am getting into them and their niche they carved…great musicianship, lyrics and stage presence. 😉🤘🤘🤘

I was a teen in the 80's but my friend's dad , who was 25 years older than us, was actually a fan of them and ordered their VHS which we watched a bunch .Basically videos with skits in between with Geeneral Boy. They layered humor and commentary and served it all it with a fun yet original musical approach. Their cover of Satisfaction is the epitome of their style, totally deconstucting the song amd giving it a new context.
What a brilliant and creative band. America probably didn't deserve them!

Except so many of the problems being identified then have come to full fruition and have set in to be the status quo. It was a very prophetic time. You could see what was coming down the line (if you had your eyes open), but the difference was that there was still a modicum of hope that something would be done about it as long as we remained vigilant. That’s the part I really miss - having hope. Hope is an excellent incubator for creativity.
Today we’re just trying to survive in the aftermath.

I'm 23, listened to Whip It as a kid cause my parents loved Devo. Watching this vid, it's honestly surprising how timeless their music is. I've been listening to most of their discography and so much of the lyrics ring true to me. It's crazy how times appear to "change" yet ideas promoted in their songs still are relatable to oddballs like me.

DEVO is great, IMO one of the last truly original and/or groundbreaking rock bands of the past half-century (along with Ramones, Oingo, maybe the Cars). Funny though how many of their lyrics and much of their imagery from 40+ years ago wouldn't fly in today's overly-sensitive climate.

(only to be looked backed on as one of those "what were they thinking?" fashion victims- and no matter the decade- past present or future- sunglasses will never be the " not sure what's going on here, but just to be safe, I'll wear these shades to give me automaic hipster credibility!" go to fashion accessory!)
