- Shadowfire © 1985 Beyond, is a very innovative game, one of the first to use a menu and icon driven interface (yes there was icon based applications even before Microsoft Windows ;] )
It got a sequel: Enigma Force

Music by Fred Gray is so epic that it's beyond epicness!
Fred Grey was the John Williams of 8-bit video games.
Let me introduce you the Danish National Orchestra (DR SymfoniOrkestret)
playing "Shadowfire":

Huge influence on my musical taste actually!
It also used for platypus clay game, level select tune.
Thank you for bringing back such memories! This is actually my favourite C64 game, I and my friends had it without the user manual, and nobody knew how to even start playing it. But I loved so much the menus, the icons, the characters, and above all the incredible soundtrack, that I kept trying, and suddenly when I was able to let Manto deploy the first character in the Zoff V, I was super excited. Eventually found out everything about the commands, and greatly enjoyed the adventure, and completed it. Later on I bought a full copy on eBay, and had so much fun reading the full instructions which I had to infer so painstakingly! To me, this is really a gem!
certainly a very unique and well constructed game with a fantastic experience defined by it's slower approach. A game born from the limitations, one of which proves less is often more.
Another example for me coming off from having played Solo Flight the other day I happened to be playing Flight Simulator X on my xbox series S and it hit me that in no real way has the experience advanced any since these days. I'm no more captivated by the fancier graphics and lure of immeasurably 'better' worlds because they simply don't convey the same realism that older games can. A great era to be part of
@@adroharv9213 Well said. The most amazing video games today come nowhere near the magic of the games I played on the C64.
@@Midwinter2glad to be part of this great time that's for sure
Reading the manual to this game gives me a real "Are we the baddies?" vibe: We work for an Empire (against a Republic), our team is made up of 2 soldiers, 2 robots, a pirate and a terrorist (and probable mass murderess who was sentenced to death before she was 'recruited'). The bio's of the robots don't really suggest any personality or individuality whereas the Republic has Robots at all ranks upto major...
I'm starting to wonder if General Zoff might not be such a bad guy...
brilliant. you're onto something for sure.
Thanks for the instructions! :-)
Had this game when I was a kid and never knew how to play it.
Loved this. Thanks for taking the time to annotate! Essential to understand WTF is going on. I got nowhere with this game as a kid : )
Same! I didn't have much money when I was a kid so we tended to trade hacked games with no instructions whatsoever
The music was a huge influence on me (especially the bit @ 27:30) and part of the reason I started making electronic music
I loved this game. Played it on a ZX Spectrum for endless hours.
This game just popped into my head and here it is, had so much fun so many years ago :D
Weeks lost and loved playing this
The game title was so compelling and the music was so good, I was hell-bent on learning how to play this game with no manual.
Didn't get very far though
I used to 'play' this game like a music box! Listen to Fred Gray awesome OST for hours!
he was like John Williams with Star Wars for 8-bit
Just spent an hour searching for info on this game on a whim before I came across the familiar title and this video! I got it from someone in trade with no manual in the 80s. Probably spent hours with friends trying every command and trying to make sense of the cryptic icon interface and game design. We were enthralled by the epic music and fascinated by the premise and strange hero characters which came through even in this abstract design. I don't know if I ever got very far on in the game but it seemed so fascinating. It made me think of Silverhawks or Galaxy Rangers, that kind of weird Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon kind of retro sci-fi setting.
stupendous music. Certainly one of my fave pieces of music for the machine even though it's quite short
Chris abbot chose a great music for platypus, this soundtrack is awesome.
I remembered so many memories with this soundtrack.
I bought it and the comprehension of the game was immediate thanks to the manual, a great concept.
It's no wonder Beyond dissappeared into the abyss of bancrupcy seems everybody had a cracked copy me included
I came here solely for the music, it was an intriguing little gem; I remember dying…a lot 😂
This music brings back memories of many slepless nights spent to play this game :D
Me too, actually not this game but...
PLATYPUS!!
OMG i loved this game. I played Enigma force first and finished than then had to get a copy of this. And yes it was a tough nut to crack, had no instructions but managed to finish it. I remember i had a map that was printed in ZZap 64 mag. That was a big help.
I actually learned how to progress in this game without a manual by watching the demo that starts playing if you leave it sit long enough
Great game. I wish I had a legal copy back then. I could never get very far without the manual. :P
Actually designed for use with a lightpen.
I think this was the first of the new WIMP games i played way back, i did finish it, loved the style of gameplay and music.
One of the best ever played
Was this game a kind of prequel for Enigma Force?
un de mes tous premier jeux ...
Hmm, was Crow (from MST3K) inspired by Manto? :)
Yeah this was a tough nut to crack without the manual, but i perservered and completed it after many attempts. Was rather enjoying myself then :)
Yeah figuring out the teleporter was really hard.
General Zoff dislikes this video.
What a fukkin game and soundtrack
How the hell do they make that blurry effect during introduction ?
That's not from the game, i made it using a video editor.
***** Yea ok..
Also loved the sequel , what was it called
theviker Enigma Force.
enigma force..
I played this on ZX Spectrum, thankfully it was more quiet than this. I don't know how C64 players didn't go crazy from the sounds.
+Silencer You get used to what you had as a kid. I imagine C64 owners would think the Speccy version is "too empty" in terms of sound.
They did.
As a kid I'd just turn the volume off on my monitor so it didn't bother me. It was a smaller screen than the monitors we use these days, so keeping an eye on that info bar was really easy and you didn't need the sound cues to let you know when something was happening.
That gave me a good laugh ta. :-)

it's so good
analog jostick?
Remember this game when I first got it (cracked version on cassette tape). Looked super cool but did not know what to do. Then I saw a retail version and bought it together with a friend of mine (we both couldnt afford it alone haha). And inside the box there was a manual. And there was the info we needed. It stated that Manto and Manto ONLY was able to use the teleporter and so without that knowledge you could try endless button presses without even getting of the ship :P
Tnx for the upload!
The ship in the beginning looks awesome, otherwise I think I prefer the crisp ZX Spectrum graphics.
