  • Enigma force by Beyond(1986) is the sequel of Shadowfire ( • Shadowfire - C64 Longp... )
It featured a more arcade orientated style gameplay and even if it is still icon based we can take directly control over our units.
In this sequel we got to control 4 units instead of 6
Maul, Sevrina, Zark and sylk (Manto and Torik died after Zoff escape incident?)
Anyway, the game can be accomplished in 2 ways, by killing Zoff to recover his key or surround him, so he can be captured, then kill him and take his key after.
I used the second option in this longplay.
Even if it can be completed in less than 5 minutes this was probably the game i spent the most time in my youth, maybe cause you can give multiple commands to your units in a world where a war between Insectoids and Repliloids accour, and we can alter this war by making alliances, unlock doors to open new war fronts or deal with the misterious Zoff.
Also the epic music by Fred Gray helped the mood.

For those wondering, the colored tiles on the floor represent items.
Red - fish or red keycard
Blue - standard ammo or blue keycard
Yellow - lockpicks or yellow keycard
    Green - green keycard
    White - strong ammo
    Grey - explosive
    Purple - Zoff's keycard
    What the items do:
Fish - heals user fully when activated
Standard ammo - use to reload your gun. Zark, Sylk and Sevrina start with this. Will slowly respawn in Insectoid ammo dump.
Strong ammo - does more damage than standard ammo. Maul always has this. Will slowly respawn in Reptiloid ammo dump.
Explosive - when activated, it will explode after some time, killing everyone in the room, except if you hide behind a door. Can't be activated when enemies are in the room, meaning it's very difficult to use it effectively.
Lockpicks - usable only by Sevrina, can replace any keycard except Zoff's.
Red keycard - found near your starting location (go up, down). Opens a door to the left of your start location, leading into the heart of the Insectoid part of the complex.
Blue keycard - found a long way from your starting location, towards the upper-right part of the complex. Opens a door two rooms right from your starting location, opening a safer and quicker way into the Reptiloid part of the complex.
Yellow keycard - found near the door opened by the blue keycard. It's a trap! Opens a dead-end room with three yellow Reptiloids, who will respawn when killed.
Green keycard - found in the room next to the Reptiloid spawning chamber. Opens the Reptiloid ammo dump, where the door to the escape shuttle is located.
Zoff's keycard - dropped by Zoff when he dies. Opens the door to the escape shuttle.
    Characters:
Zark - seems to have no special abilities
Sylk - will make Insectoids friendly when he sees Queen Insectoid. Has slightly more hit points.
    Sevrina - can use Lockpicks.
Maul - slow, but has infinite ammo and more hit points.
Purple Insectoids - standard Insectoid grunts
Orange Insectoid - Queen Insectoid. Follows a circular route through the Insectoid part of the complex. Will respawn if killed.
Green Reptiloids - standard Reptiloid grunts
Yellow Reptiloids - stronger than green. Normally there's two, but there may be up to five if you use the yellow keycard. Will respawn if killed.
Blue Reptiloid - strongest enemy, unique. Will respawn if killed.
Zoff - cannot fight, will try to flee from you. Can be captured if trapped, as shown in video. Reptiloids will protect him, Insectoids ignore him.

Thank you for these tips! here are a few more:
      - Never use any ammo on Maul or he will lose his powerful infinite ammo.
      - Use the brain icon with care, cause your character will slowly consume his health.
      - Leaving your team members in a room without enemies will slowly replenish their health.
      - As you can see, reptiloids will immediately stop fighting your team when you capture Zoff, but will become hostile again when you kill Zoff, so be sure to do it when all your team is in a safe room.
      - Strong ammunitions are double effective than standard ones, so always use them when you can.
      - Compared to Shadowfire, there is no time limit in this game, so you can just ignore the mission and explore the world, you can also help any faction you like, but this will still remain an infinite war between Insectoids and Reptiloids.

@@Rattopaz Cool, I never knew that Maul could lose his ability! And yes, despite the warning in the manual, I've never noticed a time limit.
A couple more quirks I've found:
      - If you skip allying with the Insectoids and immediately go after Zoff, they will still ally with you immediately after you kill him! It seems as though the developers simply didn't consider the possibility that somebody would play like this, so the "game state" changes to "Insectoids help" after Zoff dies regardless of what it was before.
      - If a team member is just barely alive (his health bar is 1-pixel wide), they won't recover naturally. They must use a fish.
      - Reptiloids cannot spawn while you're viewing their spawning chamber, but *can* do so once you switch your view to another team member that's not in the room. You'll get the "enemy force attacking" message, and there'll suddenly be several Reptiloids in the room.

@@Moneor Look like you played this game a lot, maybe even more than me, it's a very simple game by today's standards, but it was really innovative back then.

    • @Moneor
      @Moneor 2 роки тому +3

@@Rattopaz Yep, though I recently played it again via emulator and discovered some stuff I had missed back in the day. And yes, it was really ahead of its time, especially the way it had team members with different skills and several approaches to achieving your objectives. Some really popular game series, like Jagged Alliance, Syndicate, and Commandos, are further developments of the same concept.
It's also interesting that a sequel, called Shadowfire III, was planned but, unfortunately, never made. It would have had a whole series of missions (at least 7), and this time there would have been 9 team members, but you would only get to choose 4 for each mission.

    • @pier121121
      @pier121121 2 роки тому +4

@@Rattopaz actually there is a time limit. If you wait enough (e.g. using warp mode in emulation) a message stating "Insectoid report, destrutor (!) tugs imminent" appears. After a while (500 casualties reached) there is an explosion and the game ends with mission status "PLANET DESTROYED".

The music from this game is still somewhat of a hidden gem. I didn't know about capturing Zoff, thanks. I remember spending a lot of time in this game. I tried to make the insectoids "win" the war by engaging on their side and pushing the front all the way into the enemy armory. I tried stealing the white ammo clips and giving them to insectoids, presenting them to the queen etc. Never found a good use of the bomb other than setting the timer and hiding in the doorway after dropping it.

@@Rattopaz Shadowfire is pretty much an earlier version of both Day of the Viper & Captive if you think about it. I remember picking up the big-box version over a car boot sale back in the early 90s, except I sadly never did get round to playing it. Such a pity I didn't do so when Zzap!64 quite deservedly gave it a Gold Medal. (#^_^#)

That's what bugged me too, but now, 25 years later, I found the answer - he and Manto survived. A sequel was planned, called Shadowfire III. It would have featured all six Enigma team members plus three new ones: medical droid Keo, weapons
specialist Xenon Zux, and computer expert Piscapod.
