Optimal braking is all about managing your car's weight, not necessarily stopping the car. I think this is the most important concept to understand.
When you brake, the car's weight is shifted forward, providing more downforce on your front tires and thus extra grip while turning, which is highly beneficial during cornering.
The key to trail braking is keeping that weight on the front tires while being able to turn. To achieve this, you have to be applying some amount of braking while also turning.
Braking fully helps you slow down the car enough to take the corner. You can't turn at all at this stage because you're locking up those tires.
When you're ready to start turning, you're managing the weight of the car into the apex for maximum grip and speed into it and also out of it by keeping enough brake applied during entry. At this point you're using the weight of the car with your brakes to maintain that grip where you need it the most, not to stop the car further.
Each car is a little different, and once you truly master the technique, you may even notice your car oversteer a little into the apex while doing this. Once you understand your cars stopping power vs front tire grip you'll really start becoming quick on the track.

Great explanation and examples Rory. This has come at the perfect time for me as I'm working on my trial braking ATM. Using Coach Dave Delta to view my brake curves they are on / off basically. No slow measured release! Been working on this for a couple of sessions now - these track guide corners are a brilliant way to hone the skills and muscle memory.

This is way harder than explained. Trail braking changes according to which car you're driving. A Porsche comes to mind. As you trail brake the car starts to over steer. And thus this becomes a difficult dance between keeping the rear of the car from sending you into a wall and slowing the car down. Some cars are better balanced. And thus make trail braking very predictable. All this is also affected by downshifting. Not to say this video isn't valid. And like he mentions the corner, the tire, the car. Etc etc. All affect trail braking. Some cars you literally can't trail brake because the rear becomes so unstable.

How do you deal with that? Some road sports cars spin violently as soon as you ease off the brakes. Do you do all your braking in a straight line or put all the brakes bias to the front?

Brilliant video Rory! As many have said, way easier said than done but it's crucial to remember. I might add one thing, I'd say optimal trail braking is definitely harder when using a controller. Using one finger is harder than using a whole foot -never give up everyone!

The biggest benefit of trailbraking is it gives more room to choose your line into and thus through and out of the corner. It's even more important with motorcycles because motorcycles slow down a lot worse per kg than a car given smaller and less contact patches.

Great video as always however I often use a clutch and H shifter which makes me a right foot braker as the left foot is on the clutch pedal. I have developed a technique of releasing the brake gradually with the right foot but there is a small amount of time where I'm not actually on the brake or throttle as my foot moves back to the throttle pedal.

Trail braking with a controller is very difficult because there’s no real feedback, it takes repeated attempts at the same corner to get the judgment somewhere near.
Also with a wheel do you get more steering angle? I have watched some replays and they somehow seem to get more steering lock on tighter slower corners

Do you know what. I get trail braking, so I'm a pad user 95% of the time, but I'm slower when I do use the wheel and want to get quicker before I use that in races. I'm sort of okay trail braking using a pad. I never even consider just going into circuit experience and practising tricky sectors on the wheel 😂😂 even that is good advice. Cheers Rory!

    • @lammyjammer6670
      @lammyjammer6670 23 години тому

It's probably even easier on the pad because you're getting physical feedback in the form of vibration from the brakes on the trigger. The trick is to let go of the trigger enough to feel the vibration slow down.
When ABS is engaged the trigger vibrates more frequently. You can't start turning while this is happening. Let go of the braking trigger enough for the vibration to slow down considerably, and only then will your front tires fully respond to your turning inputs.
Gradually let go of the brake as you enter but keep some amount of brake applied until you reach the apex and then go full throttle on your exit as quickly as possible.

At this point i don’t even trust gt7 physics anymore
I was doing a time trial at red bull ring not long ago… a track where trail breaking is needed very minimally
And I tried different break bias, techniques, everything I could…
And somehow the global leaders were able to brake abt 20ft later than me… which is quite ridiculous
Especially in turn 1, we would be approaching at the same speed, have the same entry, and brake at the same moment, and I wouldn’t even stay on the track….
These claims can also be backed by the fact record times are on average 3 second faster than irl times, and if you watch the way ppl brake they very much exaggerate racing lines in this games and the abuse of the car + tire physics
I just don’t understand the hype surrounding the way this game works competitively
It’s a great game, but everyone things this is some pro sim and it’s eating the base of its community

It takes a long time to get used to this technique, best thing to do is stay still with your car and just press the braking pedal to max and then just slowly release it , do this for hours .. and maybe you get some muscle memory. Is hard , but not impossible, it just takes 💩 long time and dedication. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yes it helps, but just a little. Because Rory uses motor breaking from down shifting his own gears. Most other people use automatic transmission. When the car down shifts in automatic you DO NOT get motor breaking! This is why some people are fast and others are seconds slower driving exactly the same.
