The thing I've always found regarding motion and tactile transducers, is that less is more. You want just enough to feel it, but not so high that it's distracting. The same thing goes for the wheel force feedback - just because the wheelbase is capable of 25-30nm doesn't mean that you should set it that high. I guess you're the better judge here, but I don't think you'd be fighting the wheel like that in a real GT4 with power steering.
@@BenCollinsGaming Oh I don't disagree, but having visited a couple of sim racing centres I've always found that they've been set up for a so called "experience" - you pay your 30 or 40 quid and just get thrown around for half an hour with every thing set to 11, rather than it being a more realistic experience, and by realistic I mean how one would have their own rig set up for long stints. The way they both describe the concept of getting used to seeing when the car is sliding is definitely a key to sim racing. No matter how detailed the force feedback is, there is still a visual element you learn to rely on in place of the "seat of the pants" feeling. I find that if you're directly behind another car (in sim), you can lose the visual reference of how straight the car is tracking, it can be really disconcerting if you're used to irl. Really good video. Lot's of good points.

One small clarification, at 9:10 Ben talks about R. Hammond racing.....it is , in fact, Richard's The smallest cog team but he doesn't drive the car. Anthony and Abbie have been the drivers so far.
one thing about assetto corsa that i think ive realized and i think that steve has too, as well as it shows in the telemetry, is braking in AC. ben seems to dance on the brake a little bit more whereas steve just mashes the brake to 100% and come straight off it. i think with ben maybe being used to the braking in iRacing more than AC it’s maybe holding him back a little. if he committed to “100% brake pressure” he could start braking later and pick up some decent time
I would love to see Ben doing a session with Suellio Almeida. I think that could really help him out in the sim. Steve struggles a bit with analyzing and explaining how Ben could improve in the sim. He's grate but he's just not a coach.
@@jackofaenr Suellio is just pretty occupied with real life racing right now. He's leading the Radical North American cup. Won all three races last weekend.
Came here to say this. I've done a few sessions with him and the dude is racing Yoda. One of the things he explained to me really clearly and well was how to set up force feedback and interpret what it's telling you, something Ben's obviously struggling with. I bet he'd pick up on Ben's track usage - sim racers abuse the curbs and track limits in a way that you just can't do in real life.
A big difference between you and Steve in AC is your braking%, in iracing it's optimal to not really go above 75% like what you've been doing in AC however as you can see from Steve's graph he is using 100% braking much more often (this would easily lock you up in iracing) so sort of remembering how to brake in each sim will help massively
It took me at least a year to adjust from real racing to sim racing, and even another year to get into the top 0.5% of my first sim. Mostly it was about converting real SOP into wheel ffb and stereo vision depth perception into braking marker positions on a screen. Interestingly the spatial awareness of opponents seemed immediate and perhaps is better on sims because of all the artificial proximity indicators you get. Once you do learn it though, it does seem pretty easy to switch to other sims (the different physics are a bit like just driving a different car) so once the numbness of sim racing is dialed in to your subconscious, it's easy to adjust. I can't say there is a specific trick to that conversion process beyond just practice and experience. Definitely stick to one sim though, because the physics and ffb are different in them all. One thing for sure though is when you get old, the spotty teenage gamer factor comes in who will destroy you on pure reactions. So "the older I get, the faster I was" factor definitely exists. BTW escaping bum ratings is mostly just about being fast. The sims will tell it's about being safe as respectful but it's no replacement for creaming the opposition every corner.
This is how I feel about the sims. I can't separate the way I drive in the real world vs the cyber space, and I am 2 seconds behind the aliens on average.
Loving the content - Ben, if you want to drive GT cars in iRacing - you need to get out of rookies and get your 'sports car' license to D. To do this, you need to do sports car racing - Rookie MX5 is a good pace to start. I'm about a week into my iracing journey and i'm already at a C license and able to do GT4 and Porsche Supercup. To get out of Rookies quickly, just stay out of trouble. The game doesn't care about your results at first, just stick at the back out of trouble and pump in some boring but clean laps with no off tracks, spinning or crashing into anything!
There's definitely some steering feedback adjustments to be had to make it feel more like hydraulic power steering rather than a rack & pinion binding over bumps. Also, vehicle setup is key in sim as it is in the real world. Adjusting a setup to get the car to behave to your preference can make all the difference. Unfortunately in sim, the "ultra fast" people will use unrealistic setups that would never work IRL but are favorably calculated by the game engine. That said, there are plenty of people and real world drivers that setup their cars appropriately (and realistically) and may not be THE fastest but still fast enough to put up fights.
I think you would benefit from wearing headphones and having correct audio setup you want the tyre sound on max and engine noise low that will help hear what tyres are doing and if they are sliding etc
Ben you nailed a great time, learning how to drive fast is hard like Steve said it can be counter intuitive but works. I tend to drive a lot with my accelerator. Hope to see you on track in iRacing Bumdraft you! 🤣
Ben, there's a setting for FFB (and other settings such as TC, brake bias, etc) you can bind to button on steering wheel or button box (also for teleport to pit which is important in AC), but you must install content manager first to be able to do that.
:D Ben, He didn't explain to you! "Bump-drafting" is the act of using your extra speed in the draft to bump the car in front gently and give them little pushes. It's a teamwork technique.
I wanna see an all-out race between the stig and super gt after stig gets more practice, I wanna see them both, no talking, no joking, just pure focused racing. I think that will be a good one
Good fun to watch, I seem to suffer the same problems you do on Sims, funny that, racing in a car, you dont notice all the movement, your senses are tuned into different feelings, ie, grip levels, body roll, breaking pressure. but on a sim, it just feels like a bone shaker, thats not connected to the car, all my race car mates all have the same problem, Youre exit speeds are great, but the braking is so hard to judge, it seems easier going from sim to car, than car to sim 😂 if i turn all the movement and feedback off, im much faster. Be great to see, you take the same car around your fav uk track and see the time difference between sim and realword racing, i cannot get anywhere near my lap times in a sim.
I started iRacing in my mid 20s, I haven't been totally continuous on the service but 13 years later what has stuck is the tracks I learned first (i.e. when I was the youngest) are still my best....I think what I'm saying is the younger you are the easier it is to get good at!
@@lilibordei721 100% agree, Bens a better driver than 99% of the player base. iRacing is more like a piano lesson, repetition repetition repetition... drive the perfect line that you have memorized over and over again, don't drive the car to the limit, don't battle people, let faster car though or be punted. ultra clean driving is more important than winning or you get put down a class.
It's nice to hear someone else say something about the bouncing! DD wheels can add too much bumping around. Especially on tracks like the 24hr at Nurb on acc! You can break your wrist on that track 😂
Being honest here, I myself just got into sim racing with a wheel, i dont even drive a real car or anything(probably a good thing since i dont expect the physical feeling under me). In iRacing all you gotta do to get out of rookies is be very patient, focus on keeping the car on track, not worry about position and you're good, it took me 4 races to get out of rookie, did it last night, I'm now driving the F4's and having a blast. However I'm getting mugged a little, the game ranked me at 1600 iRating to start.
Drive around at the back on iracing. Don't worry about where you finish, just finish without incident until.your safety rating is up and you can get in the gt3s And always ask them to turn the force feedback down if it's too strong. You'll be faster 😊

Driving with a heavy truck near Bath on winding roads can give lots of emotions as well...
I think it's harder to go from pro racer to pro sim racer than it is to go from pro sim racer to pro in reality for some reason
Sim racing has all the detail in the wheel, whereas irl you have your wheel, brake, body feedback.
It's the difference in adding or removing feedback
@@tomventers yhhhh i was going to say it's proberly because its harder to replica the feeling threw your arse and feet irl transferring to sim racing and opposite way round when learn opposing crafts I suppose I'd love to see this other way round irl tho 🤣🤣 I think Ben would smoke him a little more than Steve smokes him on a sim
I'm assuming I'd be terrified to throw a car into a corner IRL like I do in a sim.
I don't want my immersion so good it breaks my bones
Brilliant video
Great video! Glad to see Steve there to help you on your sim racing way, but as he and everyone else has said already you're picking this up very quickly (unsurprisingly)! Hope to see more of this
One small clarification, at 9:10 Ben talks about R. Hammond racing.....it is , in fact, Richard's The smallest cog team but he doesn't drive the car.
Anthony and Abbie have been the drivers so far.
I look forward to seeing you on Iracing, persevere through the bs and it will be worth it, focus on no incidents and get out rookie and youll love it.
one thing about assetto corsa that i think ive realized and i think that steve has too, as well as it shows in the telemetry, is braking in AC. ben seems to dance on the brake a little bit more whereas steve just mashes the brake to 100% and come straight off it. i think with ben maybe being used to the braking in iRacing more than AC it’s maybe holding him back a little. if he committed to “100% brake pressure” he could start braking later and pick up some decent time
I would love to see Ben doing a session with Suellio Almeida. I think that could really help him out in the sim. Steve struggles a bit with analyzing and explaining how Ben could improve in the sim. He's grate but he's just not a coach.
Good idea! I’d love to see Ben go against Steve again after getting some tips froms Suelllio
Yes Ben you need to reach out to him he would explain exactly what you need to do.
@@jackofaenr Suellio is just pretty occupied with real life racing right now. He's leading the Radical North American cup. Won all three races last weekend.
@@mementomori4972I’m sure he could find some time for The Stig
Came here to say this. I've done a few sessions with him and the dude is racing Yoda. One of the things he explained to me really clearly and well was how to set up force feedback and interpret what it's telling you, something Ben's obviously struggling with. I bet he'd pick up on Ben's track usage - sim racers abuse the curbs and track limits in a way that you just can't do in real life.
right, well THIS is not a collab i EVER expected to see/hear. brilliant :L
We saw why Ben was a proper racer in that glare while he was chasing Super GT. The old bells were ringing behind those eyes haha.
Nor should you - the job of sim makers is to make it as real as possible. Anything that shatters the illusion should be ironed out
And, 2 seconds isn't that much 🙂
@@fauxnulzero you are one of the aliens!
Just found you. This is great.
Have a sub mate
Thanks for subbing
Absolutely love this! Where is the patreon to get in on racing with you all? A girl needs good racing pals!
I think you would benefit from wearing headphones and having correct audio setup you want the tyre sound on max and engine noise low that will help hear what tyres are doing and if they are sliding etc
How good to do the same in real race cars or go karts. Learned a lot from the conversation. Very informative.
Ben you nailed a great time, learning how to drive fast is hard like Steve said it can be counter intuitive but works. I tend to drive a lot with my accelerator. Hope to see you on track in iRacing Bumdraft you! 🤣
Thanks 👍
Ben, there's a setting for FFB (and other settings such as TC, brake bias, etc) you can bind to button on steering wheel or button box (also for teleport to pit which is important in AC), but you must install content manager first to be able to do that.
:D Ben, He didn't explain to you! "Bump-drafting" is the act of using your extra speed in the draft to bump the car in front gently and give them little pushes. It's a teamwork technique.
Finally a celebretz could be in the same low lobby as me in iracing!!! So exciting!!!
I wanna see an all-out race between the stig and super gt after stig gets more practice, I wanna see them both, no talking, no joking, just pure focused racing. I think that will be a good one
Good fun to watch, I seem to suffer the same problems you do on Sims,
funny that, racing in a car, you dont notice all the movement, your senses are tuned into different feelings, ie, grip levels, body roll, breaking pressure. but on a sim, it just feels like a bone shaker, thats not connected to the car, all my race car mates all have the same problem, Youre exit speeds are great, but the braking is so hard to judge, it seems easier going from sim to car, than car to sim 😂 if i turn all the movement and feedback off, im much faster.
Not at all thats just a rhetoric that is designed to keep people on the same path in life rather than progressing
Ben, let them dial the movement of the rig down next time. I love the humor and the choice of companion, fantastic.
It's nice to hear someone else say something about the bouncing! DD wheels can add too much bumping around. Especially on tracks like the 24hr at Nurb on acc! You can break your wrist on that track 😂
Oulton Park + GT4 is really great combo in AC!
You learned from one of the best,Stig!
Pretty good guy to team up with.
Drive around at the back on iracing. Don't worry about where you finish, just finish without incident until.your safety rating is up and you can get in the gt3s
And always ask them to turn the force feedback down if it's too strong. You'll be faster 😊
Not quite, You need a B licence to race GT3s in I racing.
Wow never expected this collab
Which layout is this? Looks like Hislops.I've tried this with the GT4 clubsport and I'm massively off pace
Good skills Mr Collins, have you tried racing in VR mode, i.e., GT7 VR2? I’d love to get your thoughts on the experience. One day I hope to be able to afford a motion sim to go with my VR headset. Great channel!
Simply lovely Ben, Steve s fast indeed .. but did you say bum-drafting? 🤣🤣🤣
Bagging on the gloves was very funny.. I often feel silly with the gloves but the main reason I use them is to stop the wheel handles stinking 😂😂
forget those "I am the STIG' t-shirts, this guy needs a 'I trained the STIG' shirt
Great video. There are multiple accounts on Gran Turismo called Stig. I wonder what the real Stigs accounts is...?
awsome
I remember Project Cars 2 having massive tank slapper problems. It's such a shame is was dropped a year after release (and that they never supported modding)
Having my boy drive back to the pits is crazy 😂.
Sounds like the ffb strength was way too high. As others have said, someone needs to spend a bit of time with Ben to dial in the ffb settings. I also think a session with Jardier would help. I’m sure Jards would be up for it! Or here in the U.K., someone like James Baldwin, Luke Whitehead or George Boothby.
@BenCollinsGaming I feel really validated now 😂 I have 30 years experience in sports cars and single seaters as an amateur in the US and none of it helps in iracing sports cars. I am good at iracing NASCAR though (good-ish, 2k irating so far)😅
These videos are great fun.
fancy trying your hand at some ACC Endurance Ben?
Maybe one day!
I think that just solidified Gran Turismo 7 and ACC have the best fidelity. I want to see Ben on Gran Turismo.. if only Gran Turismo 7 added the top gear track!!! 🥰🥰
Can you please add the software (is it the comp version?), any mods (if applicable), which track layout, specific car from the menu and setup. Would be good to try and beat the time here using the exact same setup. Please :)
What is the pedal sets they are using?
laughed at Ben saying iracing won't promote him.. I feel your pain.
Ben. Do pop into our Gran Turismo lobby over at PlayStation Racer 👍 9pm til late , Monday til Friday.
Or of course pop in the Live Stream chat , would be great to see you.
Ben…c’mon mate! Put on the PSVR2 goggles and join the future of sim racing in Gran Turismo 7. No “screen” sim rig compares to what the VR experience with GT7 with on a sim rig. It’s literally the next level.
