I've wondered about this..... I wonder if.... when these guys were doing this show if they ever really realized how far they would go..... especially Tony. I wonder if it ever registered with him for a minute..... that he would become a guitar picking "legend".....that one day he would become "THE ONE" that every new guitar picker would have to compare to. Well one thing's for sure..... he was and always will be one of the greatest to ever pick up a guitar. R. I. P. Tony Rice..... I am a fan for life.
Many years ago I got to sit in on a jam session at Billingsley‘s music shop in Glasgow Kentucky. Sam bush and Courtney Johnson and a couple others were playing. Dennis handed me a banjo and asked me if I had picks. . Of course I had my pics in my pocket. I was 11 years old. After a few songs I looked at the price tag hanging from the banjo. It was the most expensive banjo he had in the shop. Not the cheapest. I believe it was 1977.
I was at Beanblossom '71 and got to see this configuration. Even at 5 yrs old I knew I was witnessing something special. I'd heard Bluegrass from birth but these guys were mind-blowing and I've been hooked on Tony Rice and Sam Bush ever since. Thanks for posting this and bringing back those memories!
Great clip! I saw this rare edition of Bluegrass Alliance play at Bean Blossom in June of 1971. I was 17, and had no idea who the members were, but they played like dynamite, and travelled in an old school bus covered with a psychedelic paint job. I remember Tony Rice showing up for one set, walking out of the camp ground escorted by two pretty girls on either side, his arms around their shoulders, left and right. RIP, buddy.
Gloria, You're quickly becoming my favorite person in the hole wide world! !!! Appreciate anything about Tony I thought I'd seen all his stuff , nowif you start pulling Clarence white im gonna go nuts. Lol thanks again
Wow great classic bluegrass... and he's singing in Bb... years later he sings the same song in G... note the guy strolling across the lawn out the window...doesn'r know what he's missing...
Fantastic! Ethereal Bluegrass! But what a sorry state Tony's guitar is in. Would that have been Clarence's old D28? Also, Love the bass players buttons!
Hi Chris fancy seeing you here, this was pre ownership to Clarence's D-28... Wyatt says he modified 2 guitars a 1964 28 and hylos guitar. Its either one of them but boy that cat can sing
@@bradsparks6008 Hi Brad. Lovely to hear from you. Great old footage eh. Yes it can sing. I suspect it's more the player than the guitar though, which is falling to bits! Playing to a "single mic" setup to boot. Awesome! B.T.W., Great to see you at the Battlefield Bluegrass Festival last weekend. All the best, Chris M
Bluegrass Special I suspect a Gibson or Blue Bell(?). I don’t think Great Lakes was in business until a couple years later. I Owen two Great Lake banjos.
My nephew Tony Rice!!! I was so very proud of him ❤😢
Any good stories of Tony? He is still very much loved

I love this song. They all look like extras from a Clint Eastwood western
Lonnie Peerce (fiddle), Courtney Johnson (banjo), Sam Bush (mandolin), Tony Rice (guitar), Ebo Walker (aka Harry Shelor, bass).
yes, sam and tony were just breaking into their twenties!

Is that Clarence White's 1935 D-28??
That was 3 or 4 years prior to his acquisition of the holy grail. That was a 1956 he turned into a Clarence clone if memory serves me
Is that Sam Bush..?
Who is the banjo player?
Hi the banjo player is Courtney Johnson, also yesterday I posted 5 more of this great group , so enjoy G
Thanks! It truly doesn't get better than this
Randy Culler
