- In this video, we'll use Design Center in the Brother Luminaire to stipple the background around the applique. Then I'll do a self-binding finish!
If you'd like to stitch along with me for the Kimberbell Cuties Table Toppers, here are the supplies. You can source your own fabrics and use up your scraps!

love the way you use the hairclips
Love watching your channel!
Thank you for posting your how to video's! For a newbie to sewing/ embroidering, your video's help big time! I have a Stellaire and was wondering how to stipple the topper without stippling over the x and o's? I am also learning my machine as well! Brain overload!!LOL
love your videos and have learned so much, I have a meridian and do not have that larger hoop yet, so I must use the largest one for my machine
I love your videos. As a retired math teacher I always taught you students you learn more for your mistakes than you ever learn from doing it right the first time. Keep sew good!
So cute! I hope you have a marvelous week. Thank you for posting this video!
Becky, not sure if you realize that you can decide about the box (line) way back when you were picking your shape. In the Shapes menu on the second line down are 3 choices: outline only, fill only and outline with fill. That way you don’t have to do all those other confusing steps with memory, etc. I hope this helps you in the future. ❤️
Ah HA! I learn something new every day! Have those buttons always been there? I have the XP1 I upgraded to the XP2. I don't recall seeing those ever before. :) Thank you so much!
Just beautiful Becky ❤️
These toppers offer so many possibilities! My mind is spinning with using Simply Appliqué to make my own designs for the corners…. Thanks for the quilting options!! Love the final outcome
Yes my friend, the possibilities are endless! Make a topper for a wedding under a unity candle with the couple's name and date, a blanket for a new baby to use as a birth announcement with details in the corners...so much to do!
Love the magnetic hoops, use them for all my quilting
These are so cute. I have made the 12 from the book they were fun to do
You are such a great instructor. I am new at quilting. Would Design by Juju end to end quilting be the way to go with these toppers?
Becky - Love, love all your videos. I have learned sooooo much! Thank you! My question is what size monster hoop would you recommend I get? I have a Babylock Solaris.
I'd get the largest hoop your machine can take. So if your largest is a 9x14, then get that one. You can always hoop smaller designs in it, but you will be upset if you get a small one and then later want to do a larger design. :)

What a beautiful topper! Great job, as always. Enjoyed this series for useful tips.
Very informative! Just wondering what color thread you used in the bobbin for quilting? Sis you adjust the tension at all? Thank you!
I just used a standard white bobbin with no tension changes. No one will see the back and I didn't want to chance black bobbin thread being pulled to the top on the overall quilting. I did use a black bobbin thread in the final binding blanket stitch.
Thank you Becky for this video. I’ve learned most of what you said here. Lo if you change setting of the quilting you really should write it down.🙄. This you tube will be watched many many times.
Can't you just delete the box in edit where it shows as color 2 then click on embroidery mode to begin? I'm not home to try it. Thanks..love your whole process.
Have you tried the Brother Magnetic Sash hoop on your Luminaire? That's the magnetic hoop I have
I have that hoop, but I haven't had an opportunity to use it yet.
Trick I learned when placing the top on the magnetic hoop is to stand the top hoop upright with long edge down. Then snug it up to the part that attaches to your machine making sure top and bottom are even and snap down. So quick and easy.
Yes! I actually used this method in later hoopings, I just didn't edit those into the video. Smart! Thank you!
❤️❤️it!!
Good tutorial - great tip with the tape. The black binding really sets it off. If when you select your box, you assign no stitch to it, it might save you some time. It should still show, but not sew.
I didn't realize those buttons were even there until just this morning! I had the XP1 upgraded to the XP2 and I swear they were not there before. Thanks! I'll show that way for the next one. :)
Hello Becky, I'm entriged with the machine quilting process where you can omit the stitching from the appliqued items. I have a Husqvarna Diamond Deluxe and a Brother Scan and Cut, and I'm wondering if that procedure is something I can do with the equipment I have.
I don't know the scanning or digitizing capabilities of your embroidery machine so it's hard for me to say. For a machine to omit stitching around applique, it needs to be able to scan what's in the hoop so it can be told where not to stitch and right now, only the Brother Luminaire and BabyLock Solaris can do that (that I'm aware of). But I'd double check the manual to see if such a capability exists on your machine. Have fun!
@@PowerToolsWithThread I was thinking maybe it was something I could do in my Floriani software then send it to my machine. I'm really just in the last couple of years been actively doing more with my machine. I was really intimidated by it for a long time but I gotta tell you, your videos have really inspired me. I have had more fun and really ventured out, my husband is amazed. Thank you.
Question. I have a Bernina 700. It doesn’t do what your machine can do. If I had embrillance software could I use it to program my Bernina to skip snd not see on my X and O?
I guess you have to have a camera on your machine to do this?
What hoop would you suggest to start with? Would you recommend this over brother magnetic hoop?
You can make these toppers in a 5x7 hoop but you can always use a larger one if you have it. The Brother magnetic hoop is great for end-to-end quilting in the hoop where you don't want the quilt sandwich to slip. That hoop isn't needed in the topper projects because it's more of a quilt as you go and put the backing on last.
Becky great tutorial again. I haven't used my magnetic hoop yet, but will soon. Thanks for showing how easy it is to use. I just love your brother luminarie machine it can do so much. I really like the scanning feature. I have a husqvana diamond and really love it but I will be saving my pennies for a brother luminarie. Becky is there a brother machine that has alot of the same features as the luminarie but at a lower cost?
Love! I’m learning so much from you:). I was wondering where you got such a big cutting mat? Thanks!
Such a great show! Good ideas for anything. I have a question about Juju edge to edge quilting. How do you decide what to do if the design doesn't fit the quilt? I always have about 3 to 4 inches left to quilt. Thank you.
Quilt it anyway! Add some no-show poly mesh in between the layers of your quilt to extend the dimensions of your quilt. It will not change the hand or drape of your quilt. Then go ahead and run the design again and allow the excess to stitch onto the poly mesh. This method allows you to no longer consider the actual fabric as a boundary on your quilt top. :) I demo that method here. ua-cam.com/video/DpXZj745phk/v-deo.html
I love this series, have learned a lot. I have been wanting to try the stipple but haven't yet. I do have a question when you do your second hooping do you need the camera to line it up with the first? Also could this be done on the 10 needle using the magnetic frame?
I marked my fabric with a fold (I think) to align it so no, I didn't need the camera to align it - although I could have. As far as using a multi-needle, if your machine has Design Center like my PR1055, then yes, you can use it. Thank you!
First of all i’m learning new things i can so with my Luminaire!! And 2nd. What size magnetic hoop are you using?
It's the 10.5" by 16". Love it!
I really loved watching this series. The pattern is so cute. I have a Brother Dream Machine 2. Am wondering if I can do the stipling on it like you did with the Luminarie. I need to get the Dime frame for my machine. ♥️
I never had a DM2 so I'm not sure. Maybe you can do the stipple but it doesn't allow the ability to erase? I'd poke around on the machine to see. The buttons and steps will be different, but maybe???
DIME does not make one of the magnetic hoops for my Janome Horizon 12000. I keep hoping they’ll come out with one. But I did just buy the Janome magnetic quilting hoop Janome makes.
That's so sad. :-( Maybe some day. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!
What happens if your “quilting area” is smaller than your area on the machine?
