    I work at TJ's and have tried these noodles for lunch...once was enough! They are NOT good, but our Squiggly Noodles are yummy. The Princess Pastry is imported from Denmark and is pretty great when heated in the oven and served with a bit of fruit preserves or fresh fruit. Still, nothing surpasses the deliciousness of a good ol' Kringle from Racine!!

    There was a lot of talk about the noodles not being all the way cooked and raw and not the right kind of noodle for a 3 minute soak, but I feel like it was forgotten that the instructions called for a 6 min soak, maybe going with half the soak time was part of the problem

    • @hallecious
      @hallecious 14 днів тому +14

      Her comment about a 3-minute preference notwithstanding, she did end up waiting a full 4 minutes between preparing the last cup (Spicy Miso) and tasting the first cup she’d added boiling water to (Chicken). I would say that took her at least 6 minutes while she took her time to sample each one, - seeing as she went in order of preparation (1, 2, 3) and there is a lot of time lost while filming before final edits. These noodles appeared to have been parboiled then air-dried, but were not pre-fried before packaging like the squiggly ones typically are. That might taste more raw as the wheat flour hasn’t really been cooked before the boiling water hits them. Fun fact: there exist companies devoted to testing and selecting the perfect wheat strains with the optimal gluten elasticity to be worthy of mass-produced ramen noodles. There exist very serious critics worldwide on the valor of different noodles on the traditional ramen front.

    • @DumbestDumbFool
      @DumbestDumbFool 14 днів тому

      she was talking about the noodles being different than the other 3 minute noodle in texture, not about the lack of time as she did stated she let them soak for 4 minutes and the soup is barely steaming unlike normal 3 minute soak. Context clues aren't that hard to see

  • @FlareHeart
    @FlareHeart 14 днів тому +7

    If the flour tasted raw, I would definitely recommend trying a stovetop preparation where you actually boil the noodles in the broth for the 6 minutes rather than letting them "steep" as that might help both the flavor and texture.

      That really didn't bother me. I came to get her opinion of these cup noodles, not a full fledged food critic review. I care more whether it tastes good than what kind of oil it has. For the "peanut" bits, she tastes it and finds that it's garlic a split second later. Idk about you, but I'm not confident I could identify what the brown/beige bits at the bottom of a cup noodle are from the ingredients list.
      But since you and others are bothered by it, maybe she will read ingredient lists more

      Yeah, they tried to go very healthy with these instant ramens (except for the salt amount which is a whopping ~37%), which is why they don't taste very nice. For example, ingredients for the noodles: unbleached wheat flour, sea salt, vital wheat gluten. It says the noodles will be cooked in 6 minutes, but realistically it can take up to 15 minutes.

    The last thing I tried from Trader Joe’s (TJs) was their vegan tikka masala sauce (comes in a clear plastic pouch next to other sauces/soups). I found it a bit too mild and too bland (“one-noteish”), so added extra spices (garam masala, sugar, cayenne pepper) and a little half & half and it was much better to me. Had it with chicken. So not bad, but having to doctor it up makes me feel other options are better.

    One decent americanized ramen is sapporo ichiban (the company, sanyo, is about 3 miles away and looks like a really big warehouse with nothing going on). Even the American version of shin (and shin black) leaves much to be desired when compared to the korean one. I have one recipe that makes top ramen good: Three packs of chicken ramen (boil just over 2 minutes, not 3), two seasonings, three tablespoons honey, two tablespoons spicy mustard, one dozen chicken nuggets. No water, it's a dry recipe. Add some hot sauce to give it a zest. That's honey mustard chicken ramen. If you want to upgrade it, use sapporo chicken flavor. Do not use maruchan, the noodles are too soggy.

I eat ramen that doesn't go through the same process of say Nissan or Maruchan. The noodle texture is definitely different. To each their own. Maybe boiling it in the broth will help. If I had to choose between the deep fried excessive sodium flavorful ones over the healthier choice with bland flavor and healthier processed noodles then yeah. I can always doctor up the flavor. Thats like a single mouthful of noodles. I strickly stick to Maruchan BEEF, usually 2 packs is good enough. The only CHICKEN I'll eat are the Samyang Buldak. Right now I'm into the Nissan Fire Wok Beef Yakisoba and the Maruchan Yakisoba Fire Spicy Beef flavor.

    I wonder if it would make a difference if you cooked them in a pot. You know the ones, rolling boil, cook for 3-5 minutes, add packets, etc.

    • @blueblaze9862

      Probably not bc her biggest complaint was the mushiness/starchiness of the noodles, so boiling in a pot would have made them worse

    I liked the instant ramen cups more when I boiled the noodles in a pot, rather than boiling water and pouring it on top. Great with some seeweed, frozen veg chunks, and a boiled or poached egg. Also needs a good protein chunk to go with it as you nosh…

    Dollar Tree recently starting selling, in my store anyway, this Twisted Noodles Ramen Soup brand in a cup like those. But only in chicken flavor that I've seen so far. But I really enjoy it more than Instant Lunch and Cup Noodles brands. You should try it and they come in a pack of 3 for $1.25. I've only ever seen it at Dollar Tree so idk if it's considered a Dollar Tree brand.

    My favourite instant noodles are the Korean broad ones. I particularly like the sesame paste ones and the tomato ones (but I haven't seen the tomato ones for a while). You strain the water off then add the seasoning. I don't use all the chilli! I like the chewy texture!

    The U.K. do great instant noodle in cup. It’s not ramen so it’s not so much liquid and more filling as more noodle. Called ‘pot noodle’. You add boiling water and leave for a few minutes and add flavour powder. They are a dirty delicious naughty treat 🤣. I think they are all at least vegetarian (without a fuss or being a speciality) but have lots of flavours and are a national institution. There are also super noodle styles. Blocks you boil in pan with water with seasoning. Does USA have anything (vegan) similar as I miss these for quick snack and can’t find any

    I always let the hot water sit in any cup noodles for WAY longer than it says, until almost all the water is absorbed.
    But a package of 5 ramen is at dollar tree now. More noodles for 25 cents each. And I add extra stuff to it.

    The only way that I could stand these cups was to have them soak in the boiled water for 6 minutes and then nuke them for an additional minute and let them sit for another minute or two. Even then, these are a real disappointment for me. However, Trader Joe's has been carrying them for at least a couple of years, so it's obvious that customers like them.
