Justin Stanton (Trumpet, Keys) is my young cousin and I've seen The Pups 5 times. Great bunch of guys. I didn't see any egos, just incredibly talented friends having fun. The 1st time I saw them, Sput just blew me away on drums. Then they added Larnell... lol Try this one Snarky Puppy - Shofukan ua-cam.com/video/kk0WRHV_vt8/v-deo.html RIP Big Shaun.
RIP Shaun Martin (talkbox/church shouting), the king of stankfaces Oh yeah, RIP legendary Bernard Wright too. Other keyboardist dancing in front of Shaun. Keyboard gangsters!
That guy doing the spinny dance at the very end, in the "1" shirt... That was the last time he was ever recorded. He died in a car accident about a month after this. D: As far as rehearsals and band leaders and how that works... The bass player is the leader of Snarky Puppy. If you watch carefully you can see him give nods to people to give them the next solo, or make gestures with his bass or his head to move on to the next section or end the song. As for rehearsal... in _most_ big bands like this they're endless, with sectionals and then coming together as a whole, with many rehearsals and then several dress rehearsals. But this is Snarky Puppy. For one concert, the first in which Larnell Lewis joined them, he had about 24 hours' notice before the first performance. He learned the entire album on the plane ride over to Europe, then IIRC they had _one_ rehearsal, and then played the first gig. That's pretty typical of them. Everybody, *everybody* in Snarky Puppy is an absolute monster, all such consummate professionals, that they pretty much do one playthrough and then go. It's absolutely unreal! If you're not familiar, a couple of other great rabbit holes to go down are Dirty Loops and Vulfpeck. Have you ever seen a drummer play a lampshade, legitimately, as part of a song? Well, check out Vulfpeck's OMV for "Dean Town" and you will! It's the _fiercest_ lampshade playing you'll ever see!
Appreciate all the info and the insight into the big band setting! So sad that dude passed away! We have checked out both Dirty Loops and Vulfpeck on the channel and they are unreal! Dirty loops’ newest tune “Run Away” was fire! 🔥 On our home page go to the playlist ‘Bands and Groups’ and they are all there! Thanks for swinging by!
According to Michael League, there is no click track. If you want to be absolutely certain, you should check out What About Me. The time signature for that one is insane!
You should definitely check out the Drumeo videos of Larnell!! They have him doing the “hear it once” type challenge twice and give him “Enter Sandman” and a jazz song that I forgot the name of. But obviously it’s amazing to watch him sorta work it out and break it down. The guy is awesome in all regards and incredibly humble.
I'm pretty sure the working title of this was "nasty drip in 7/8". This might be the thickest, stankiest groove I've ever heard. Also, the energy of every single one of them is just mind blowing. THAT is true artistry: having fun on stage and sharing it with the world!
not sure if you know/mention it later: I think a great thing to have in mind when you watch this again is that this is composed by Mark Lettieri on the pale blue guitar 🙂
You realize you've got to get down here to Miami next Feb for their Ground Up Music Festival. One of the best weekends of music you'll ever enjoy. And they perform all three days.
I would honestly doubt if a click track could be deployed in a tune where the time signature changes… a click track by its design requires time to be a constant. The band members receive a copy of the song in midi from ML (created in Logic) and that’s how the tunes are learned… by learning not only their respective parts, but all the surrounding parts so they understand how each part fits together. … they each essentially learn everyone’s part. I attribute this level of detail to where the band formed; a University in Denton TX renown for attracting only the best musicians for literally decades. Please remind your viewers God gave us two ears and only one mouth for a reason; to listen more than we speak… a good musician should already know this… these guys clearly do. I would recommend SP’s earlier work, particularly if their video of “Alma” is still available… this was where I believe the performance video concept began… besides, the percussionist Nate Worth plays his ass off. ua-cam.com/video/tozA8OT4YIA/v-deo.htmlsi=EfZQLffvbWUPz7_9

Recorded at Deep Ellum Art Co, one of the coolest venues ever.
My favourite track ever. The sheer talent and joy in that room… bliss. I was lucky to see them play it in London. I almost cried. Magical.
Oh cool! I bet that was so EPIC! Thanks for sharing. They are such incredible musicians!

Time signature starts as 14/16, then moves to 4/4 later in the song. No idea about whether there's a click track.
Dudes are unreal! So much groove and they are just locked! Thanks for the info! 🤘🏻
Maybe Lingus?
Gotta check it out! Thanks so much!
