I see a Lingus reaction, I click and sub. Yeah...wow.
P.S. The guy in the vid who’s shaking his head in disbelief at that solo has five Grammys under his belt and still lost his freaking mind.
Yeah, Shaun Martin is a hella good keyboardist himself. I've seen some of his solos with Snarky Puppy in other songs. Don't let his two-finger Moog bass playing fool you.
@@AdamDray Thing of Gold has got to be my favorite.
He does some awesome stuff with that talk box thingy
Yep! That's how good everyone is in the band!
@@timp5048 Vocoder?
Larnell actually learned the Songs in the plane stepin in for the actual band drummer and there was like one day rehearsal before playing the gig ... How impressed are you now with him... The talent with this dude is out of this world
Yeah, its wild. The documentary is awesome. Snarky puppy juat won a Grammy also.
Larnell is one of the few drummers I think could teach anything to young Yoyoka.
Actually, the story is more wild than that. He landed the same day as the recording and was 2 hours late from the airport as the taxi didn't show up.
@@andreasfrom582 yes I watched the documentary since then .... This is insane
Not even a day of rehearsal. He landed like two hours before recording. He learnt it all mid-flight. Insane.
"Why's he laughing?"
The keyboard solo was improvised.
And because Cory was grooving perfectly with Larnell, who was the stand-in session musician for this recording session, because their normal drummer got sick. This was Larnell's audition basically, and he learned the music on the plane to Europe and didn't get time to practice the song. Really, the band hadn't ever played the songs all the way through together, either. They rehearsed bits and pieces in sections but it had to all come together in the recording session.
They won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album this year (not for We Like It Here, but for Live at the Royal Albert Hall), added to the three Grammys they'd won before.
Not to mention that's one of the other keyboardists so I'm sure he was QUITE impressed.
@@rixyl7475 I mean, it’s no wonder. Corey displayed Mozart-level musical intelligence. There were themes, variations of those themes; variations of harmony based on jazz, blues, swing and lounge genres; variations of cadences deeply rooted in classical western theory... the list goes on.
It wasn't entirely improvised. There are four versions of Lingus on the DVD, all with versions of this solo. They're all differnt too though, and this is the probably best.
They play it on tour, and when Cory Henry's doing other stuff, they play versions of it on other instruments, or have guest artists solo it or whatever.
@@kleinemark79 Pretty sure that's the first recording considering thats the one they talk about in the Documentary.
Haha... Larnell, in his band, playing music he knows... No sir-ee-bob. He arrived on a plane, that morning, to sub in for the other drummer who couldn't get a dutch visa. He learnt those tracks ON THE PLANE. ON THE FRICKIN' PLANE. AND FLEW ALL NIGHT. AND RECORDED IT THE DAY HE ARRIVED. Check out the "Larnell Arrives" video my good sir :)
Yeah, Shaun was laughing in disbelief because Cory was just insane. At one point he replicates the solo with the left hand in perfect sync, that's just crazy.
too many people sleep on the fact that he doubled his solo in perfect sync, that shit gets me erry time comming from a sax player.... just insane
@@alexmurillo7434 bro I couldn’t even imagine being able to do that on a non dominant hand it’s crazy
@@jakobyorr9818 And on another keyboard way further down than the lower manual on a B3, and in the dark. I know Corey's played since he could reach the keys on his church's B3, but still-I'm sorry, that guy is from another planet. Doesn't seem like the same planet as Jacob Collier, but I bet they're in the same Solar system.
@@rollomaughfling380 and even on top of that, the fact that the kronos has weighted hammer action keys and the kingKorg only has semi weighted, so he'd be getting different key feels for each hand
@@mathickling223 Good point, but a Minimoog over a Rhodes is familiar from my day. Doing what Corey does with it, however, is from the Future.
Cory and Larnell building on each other is incredible. You can see them raising each other's game. Oh, the other keyboardist was laughing because he has, I dunno, five, six grammys and Cory just spanked him.
You nailed it. When Larnell changed to the cross stick 16th note vibe during Cory's solo, Cory used that to build, then as Cory got more intense Larnell just pushed it up, then so did Cory. They fed off each other. It was watching two musicians just feed each other, both giving each other what they need for greatness.
Who is the other keyboard player?
@@shmuelhirsch2069 Shaun Martin
Watching new reactions to 'Lingus" is my way of reliving the 1st time I heard it some years ago. Welcome noobs. You'll never be the same again.
And to me there's never enough first-time Lingus reactions on this platform
The second keyboardist Shaun Martin was laughing in disbelief because Cory Henry created that solo as he played it. It was completely improvised. What made the moment more unbelievable was the synchrony between Cory and Larnell because Larnell literally learned the music for this show on the plane ride over. I think this was in the Netherlands or something and he stepped in at the last minute.
Outstanding performance.
Cory “Gandalf” Henry. The wizard of the wizards.
I was just thinking about posting a comment: "if magic could be casted via keyboards, a portal to heaven would opened behind Cory on the last keystroke of that solo"... :)
Truth. Cory Henry is one of the best keyboard and organ players of all time
If everyone in the band is a wizard, Cory Henry is the Sorcerer Supreme
@@apvanlaan mage lvl 20
For a minute there I was worried someone would include the word “Grand”…
This song...this band makes me Hella proud to have grown up as a “Band Geek”.
This is a generational performance, in my book. Everyone with their hands on an instrument there at the very top of their game, and the standout solo is truly transformative. The harmonic progressions are next-next level and the technique required to double that kind of speed and melodic precision with his non-dominant hand is...well, it's quit-inducing. Why try?!?
Thanks for a really great reaction video!!!
Fun fact: Larnell Lewis learned all the songs on that album including Lingus on the 7 hour plane ride there, the man is INSANE!!
Wow! Really?
Just when you think Larnell is impressive and can't top himself, you hear something like this.
Wow! Just wow.
Meanwhile, it seems Cory was just sent by God to do this to us. Lol
You put that exact comment on every single one of these reactions. That's a funny fact.
@@steveneltringham1478 What?
@@steveneltringham1478 it does make it less impressive.
What's funny is that I have watched enough Lingus reactions to notice the same comment... can't get enough of Corey's solo
Finally, a Lingus-reaction video that doesn't start/stop the song and just takes it all in. You've got a sub, my dude
I’m a Snarky guy, not a metal guy, and I’ve watched more or less every reaction video to Lingus there is. This one is my favourite. The first time I’ve seen someone genuinely watch and listen for the first time and pick up on all the same moments, twists and turns, and fills and these amazing players vibing off one another - just as a fan of this band would. I couldn’t have imagined we’d share any music in common, but there you go! Respect and thanks to you @bryanforcedrums
There are a lot of sub genres of metal, and there are tons of metal bands that share similar rhythmic and melodic complexities as bands like snarky puppy. I know some of it can get a little cringe with screaming and crazy amounts of distortion. I’d suggest giving some of today’s prog metal a listen👌🏼
Feel the same way...You gotta appreciate someone's response when it practically mirrors your own first viewing
Me too. Best live experience of my life. But this reaction embodies Larnell's speech at the end of doing Sandman; respect the culture and expression of the music, and don't put yourself in a box.
Game recognize game.
I thought I was the only weirdo out there that can't resist a reaction video to Lingus. Usually followed by a few repeats of the song itself too. Cheers! Glad to know there's more of us!
Cory Henry was the keyboard player for the solo he is known for his genius playing but that was very much a once in your lifetime solo!
I’d strongly suggest checking out Shofukan or What About Me from the same recording session, both great songs with the latter having som mental drums at the end.
Also worth checking out Larnells playing on Zildjan live (along with the many other great drummers there), he really cuts loose with a crazy solo section and the supporting band, Ghost Note, are about half the members of Snarky Puppy but just as obscenely talented!
I saw somebody point out elsewhere that one amazing thing about that keys solo is that he starts doubling it with his left hand. Assuming Corey is right-handed, that means either he's developed his left to where it's equal in dexterity and speed to his right, or his right hand is even faster and more nimble than what he's doing here. That's why the other keyboardist is wigging.
Btw, Corey has a recent funk/soul album out with his own band. The Song Exploder (iirc) podcast did an interview/episode with him about it a few weeks ago.
Couldn't have put it better myself!
@@stevehall5128 That left hand stuff is just nonsensical. I mean, how does one even get that good? Of course, the truth is he is a true musical native speaker, having learned music at the same time he was learning to speak, so as intuitively as most people speak, that's how he plays.
@@stevehall5128 i am a guitar player mainly but when he played it doubled with his left hand I knew how crazy this guy is.
ya as amazing as they all are, I almost can't listen to the other Lingus recordings from this same session just because it doesn't have this solo. Really says something about it.
I've seen/heard Lingus a million times at this point, but I'm still amazed at:
1. The technical team, giving everyone in the room a set of headphones and filming everything with multiple cameras
2. The fact that the musicians know such intricate music by heart, without having to sight-read music (and that the trumpet solo is apparently filtered through a guitar pedal)
3. Larnell, but also the other percussionists who fill out his sound
4. Corey,'s masterful solo, often improving the same part with both hands at the same time
6. Michael, for writing such amazing grooves
Listen to the entire album; it's magic in a bottle that even they won't be able to reproduce.
I've seen this vid countless times, and i am still amazed at their performance! To watch YOUR genuine amazement was a joy.
I love how larnell drives the solo without upstaging corey.
This is the recording he was talking about in the video on drumeo. Had to learn a song list on 7.5 hour flight. Larnell is frickin awesome!
Larnell's the only drummer alive that can keep up with Cory. Totally insane levels of musicianship.
It's one of the most exciting and energetic compositions I've ever heard, I never get sick of it.
Ah yes, another Lingus reaction for me to digest.
You should react to “what about me?” From Snarky Puppy as well
That drum solo...
this is THE larnell song
It is *so* good!
Three words 'What about me'.
And shofukan too
This is how Snarky performances go. Top tier musicianship, always in sync with each other. Michael League runs the performance, and one of the ways he keeps everyone involved and on their toes is the players don't know who is to play the soloes until a few bars before. He just gives them a nod. That way they are always tuned in and engaged. The membership fluctuates somewhat, with players moving in and out based on availability. They record most of their performances, and make them available for download in FLAC files by the next day. They are on the website for purchase, you can see the lineups and get different personnel for a different take.
The piece has a light, deft feel to it until the sax kicks in with that flare and everything jumps to a new level.
Love your attitude, your generosity of spirit and that you didn't try to overly rationalise. Great reaction video
3:24
That IS cool: cymbal crashes synced with the bass line.
Musician reactors usually like to dissect techniques, some music theory sprinkled in, a quick discussion on what "in the pocket" means, etc etc. But with SP, and this tune in particular, there's too much going on to do that very effectively. Loved the honest reaction; your face said it all.
`Larnell, comfortable, with his band, playing what he knows` - yeah, erm... he learnt the track the day before. One of the most talented drummers on the planet, for sure.
its not talent. its a fucking life time of work. he made it his craft and literally spent all of his life getting good at drums. o7 to the gods of drumming
@@apexmoon6912 so where does this 16x or more advantage come from? You have no evidence to show that someone just naturally has more skill, because you do not get to this level without absurd amounts of practice, even with talent. The fact that people believe so much in talent is kind of sad and the only reason the belief exists is because people don't experience the time investment it takes, they only experience the results. It's a poisonous idea that causes a lot of people to give up on things because they expect instant gratification and if it doesn't happen, well , guess I just wasn't "talented" enough.
@@apexmoon6912 bro, stfu. Sure there is always natural talent, but 90% of talent comes from hard work.
I think I just got converted!! WOW WOW WOW never knew I liked Jazz, until now, thanks Bryan!!
Jazz is like metal in that there are so many amazing fantastic subgenres. Like, if you like progressive metal, you're probably also going to like progressive jazz fusion.
Its all great stuff from Snarky Puppy. The video of Outlier at this session has a lovely moment when the sax player headphones slip off and distract him from his solo. Larnell fills in in less than a heartbeat to cover. If you were just listening you wouldn't notice a thing. Absolutely on fire and in the moment with each other. I get the impression that Larnell's last minute addition to the session totally transformed it for everybody concerned. Massive talent in that room but, more importantly, a huge amount of joy along with it.
Cory and Larnell just vibing that ride was insane.
7:45
Hes laughing at how ridiculous Corey Henry is. Because its actually funny how much of an alien he is lol 😆
Watching your reaction giving you goosebumps gave me goosebumps! amazing reaction!
They rehearsed this(whole album) in FOUR days, except Larnell who was a late substitution.
that keyboard solo is an epic journey... yes you are right - these guys are wizards!
All I can say is that I totally feel your reaction as a musician. I’m like they are so locked in and from what I understand Larnell had just joined the band and is apparently a quick study. A whole band of geniuses!!
I think (at 7:42) the other keyboard player was laughing out of joy because of how stunning Cory's playing was becoming!
Larnell was a last-minute replacement for this show because their regular drummer had visa issues. He learned all the songs on the flight to the Netherlands.
I KNOW, RIGHT?
And to add to your comment, the entire album was written in 4 days. They started on Thursday and recorded this on Monday.
Gahhlee this man is a mutant
I'm pretty sure he's part of The X-Men
That's insane
Watch the "We Like it Here" documentary right here on you tube and be amazed and bewildered. They are all truly wizards.
@@joshuarichard2509 I’ll second this. Great watch and listen.
Robert Searight (a.k.a. Sput) forgot to renew his passport, therefore wasn''t allowed to board the flight to The Netherlands.
Michael League (band leader of Snarky Puppy) asked Lewis to join.
OH yeah. and Larnell learned all the songs on this album on a plane to Europe and had one rehearsal..maybe 2 before hitting record. Just so you know.
The drums and bass are locked
Drummer learned all the drum parts during flight to session
Incredible
The Snarky Puppy video that showcases Larnell's excellence and skill at his very best is the "What about me (We like it here)" from the same set.
That has some of his hard core fills which seem to have their own beats that have their own fills again.
Snarky puppy always blow my mind everytime I see a reaction video🤣 that keyboard section is just nasty..🙌
Whenever I see a Snarky Puppy Lingus reaction vid I watch and hold my breath to see is the reactor is as blown away as I am. Every single time.
Notice the entire crowd has headphones!
I'm a simple man. When I see Snarky Puppy-Lingus, I click!!!
That Guitar Player at like 2 minutes- god i could listen to that tone all the time - such deep grooves
I am so happy....all of you musicians were BORN, I really do. I love you guy's parents, for birthing such amazing musician specialists into this mundane world of hell. Life became tolerable from just experiencing this intricate musicianship and master class contribution. I don't understand why music does to the brain and spirit as it does. But I NEED it and can't balance out my life without it. It's another language another form of LOVING someone if thee creators want it to be. For my mental health.....please stay safe and healthy.
Came here for a reaction about Larnell and then couldn't trust my eyes COREY HENRY on the keyboard. WOOOOOW
4:32 "Everyone here is a bunch of wizards"
Boy, you don't even fucking **know** yet.
So I literally paused the video before the keyboard solo comes in just to say that I'm waiting for @bryanforcedrums to lose his mind over this section. LOL
Larnell actually learnt all the drum parts in the cab drive from the travel Inn to the studio, and apparently it was only a 10 minute drive, and the cab driver was listening to Ariana Grande.
The cab driver was also loudly crunching on a Taco Bell Fiery Doritos® Locos Tacos Supreme®
😭😭😭😭
every track from "we like it here" is outstanding. the best drum solo is in What About Me.
I love how emotional you are after processing the amazingness of this performance...I felt the same way. I feel blessed my ears were able to know this exists 😍
9:16 and 9:27 and 9:38
THE MACHINE!
Larnell is indeed a “machine,” a machine that is literally driving the pace of the brass - as is evident at these time stamps - as well as the keyboard solo with a ridiculous amount of syncopation. By the 9-minute mark, this has become an entirely different composition, always at the brink of spinning out of control - BUT! It never does.
You need to watch the behind the scenes documentary for this live album.
LARNELL LEARNED ALL OF THIS BRAND NEW MUSIC ON HIS WAY TO THE GIG!!!!
Bliss.. thankful to have seen them live 😍👌💥
“Thing Of Gold” is a very cool tune.
This was nothing short of SPECTACULAR!!!!
Love watching you love this stuff! So great! Keep making and sharing my friend!
We saw Snarky Puppy in concert, we never heard of them before, and after we saw them we fell in love with them 🥰🥰🥰😍😍😍
I love how open you are to all kinds of music. I enjoy your reaction, your genuine honesty and appreciation for anything bad ass.
"We like it here" is such an incredible record.
It's physically impossible to NOT move to this song. I was listening to this while working, had to stop and look at what I was hearing. Fuckin' hot!
Must’ve watched this a half dozen times now. Thanks again. Great video.
Snarky Puppy is Life :)
I'm so glad I found this video! Its not just a reaction to drums, but everyone's part. I've probably shown this video to 100 people [mainly because of Cory's solo] since it came out. So glad I got to see them a couple times live
Snarky Puppy brought me here. Dope hat, bro!
Having seen most reaction videos to this track now, yours is probably my favourite. Thanks for the enjoyment reliving my first time hearing this ☺
Full circle. Lewis covered the drums for Enter Sandman after his first listen :)
It's like the keyboard player was like, I'm gonna do everything to throw you off track. And Larnell's mission is the exact opposite 😁
Man, you are in for a treat, cheers
Welcome to the S.P. fan club. Everything they do is awesome.
Will never get sick of reactions to this tune. Good stuff! Nonsense indeed.
During Corey’s solo on the keyboard, the guy next to him took his headphones off and laughed because that section of the solo was improvised.
This piece is just an absolute treat to the ears.
Larnell and Corey were “talking” to each other on another plane of reality. That conversation went to the netherworld....they were in the moment reacting to each other’s spirit. Something that is rare and special. What it must have been to witness it live.
Or did the conversation go to the netherlands? I'll see myself out..
Those are 2 guitar players playing that lick in unison by the way. So clean and together that it sounds like 1 with a nice chorus effect
“We like it here” is another great one to check out
I love how the crowd is completely in awe, and the band members are in awe of each other.
Watchin' you watchin' them was the most fun i've had in a long time! thanks
I'm not particularly a Jazz fan, but I respect Jazz musicians and their talent. I am however, a massive fan of Larnell Lewis and Snarky Puppy. Pure 🔥🔥🔥🔥. Larnell learned all the songs on the plain flight there. Crazy
Yeah, Cory Henry's solo here was like a Bach level improvisation. While it was his third pass at it this time around the chemistry between Larnell, the fill in drummer for this session who learned most of this set on the 7 hour flight to Europe, and Cory pushed them both to new heights.
The guy shaking his head and taking off his headphones is a Grammy winner who knew he just saw a once in a generation performance.
Bro, what a great reaction. You said a lot of what i was thinking the first time i heard it. im going to check out more of your stuff, i like your vibe.
You gotta do “What about me”...Larnell just goes nuts, and the guitar work is from another planet!! The entire band goes to 11...
Drumeo has a video where Larnell Lewis said he was learning the charts on a 7 hour plane ride over to record this.....Beast is what he is and Corey Henry is the keyboardist that you almost expect the equipment to burst into flames......
Now this is a brother who can understand what he hears. Respect peace and love to you all
Man that guy ain’t laughing. He’s crying. It’s that good. 🙏🏽
I must give a shout out to Bill Laurence for doubling the kick drum on the piano. I've tried to do that on "air piano" and I never make it more than halfway through the solo before I mess up.😅
that was explosion of sound and energy
That keyboard solo just screams speeding ticket to me. Follow his speed you’re hitting 90 without thinking. Amazing music.
You should watch the short documentary for "We like it here".
Short summary of some very interesting facts:
- Most of the band arrived at location on a Thursday and were set to perform the coming Monday.
- The music they were set to perform wasn't composed beforehand. They made it while they were there.
- Larnell Lewis (Drummer) arrived on the day they were set to perform (Monday). He listened through audio recordings for the songs on the plane ride there and only had 2 hours of practice with the band before performing.
I'll put in my pitch for "What About Me?" if you want to see Larnell really go off.
Do you see a single piece of sheet music in the room...these guys are playing on pure feel which makes it even more magical.
Another wonderful reaction. Love how moved you are by larnell. Same. And cory
Hey, Bryan - I just watched the Snarky Puppy documentary on youtube, and thought you might be as blown away as I was to learn that they wrote these songs on a Thursday and recorded them on the Sunday. Whaaaaaaat????? They sound like they have been rehearsed forever, hey? PS like your reactions to this stuff :-)
This the first time I’ve listened/watched Snarky Puppy and glad I did it with you as your reactions were exactly mine
Your reaction to that was exactly the same as mine the first time I heard. How is this level of musicality possible. Such a joy!
it's my first time here and he said Welcome! it felt good
He’s not wrong. That guitar tone is boss.
These guys are so incredibly good
If you're a Larnell fan, check out What About Me from the same session, he's given the given spotlight there and he just kills it
