@@dogwoodtales Nice. I used your videos as a guide to clean the same washer and I whole heartedly agree with refitting the ring part and how much patience it took. I appreciate the time you took to create and upload these videos.
THANK YOU! after seeing that i would have to take the whole washer apart, I almost got out my sawzall to cut a whole in the front, but thankfully found a different way. The front panel is one giant piece. I slipped a couple blocks of wood under the front feet, removed the 4 bottom front 1/4" screws, then pried the panel open enough to slip my hand up and empty the drain basket. Found a bra pad, nickel and lots gunk! Problem solved!
Thank YOU! I realized that filter needed cleaning, but the videos I found only show machines with filter door or removable kick plate. What I needed to know was how to remove panel to access it!!!🙄
Thanks for doing the video....a quick share on the issue with mine draining earlier in the year, cleaned out the trap and put it back together. Still wouldn't drain. After looking around a bit closer, the impeller shaft broke. The motor was fine but the impeller wouldn't spin to pump the water out. At first I thought it was a lego rattling around. Found a cheap knockoff motor on Ebay for about $40. Back in business and mama is happy now.
I just cleaned mine out from behind. Just remove the rear access panel. Unplug the washer. You can reach under the drum take the pump loose by pushing it forward so the rubber isolators come loose, then rotate it carefully. You don’t want to damage the wiring. Then with some kind of catch pan under it, unscrew the filter and pull it out. Clean it, put it back in, reattach the pump. Then reattach the back panel and slide the washer back. I think it was a lot easier than taking the front of my machine apart. By the way, mine is stacked, and I didn’t have to unstack it to do it this way. Just carefully slide it with a towel or 2 under it.
You can actually reach the filter from the back and there is enough room to get the filter out. Remove back panel. Slide a 1/4 sheet cake pan ( with sides to catch the water) under the filter. It your arm is long enough and thin enough, you can reach to the front of the machine and access the filter. Unscrew the filter, now the water will drain into the pan. clean and replace filter. Remove pan and dispose of the water. replace back.
Thanks for the video and confidence it inspired to tackle the task. Mine is a WFW87HEDCO similar to yours, (error codes f9/E1) door would not unlock until i wet vacked the drain line reducing the water level to trigger the unlocking. whirlpool addressed the access issue for the pump by the REAR panel removal on my unit(thought i would get a look at it through the back 1st and got lucky). The pump is centered under the tub with the cleanout facing one side and easily reached. Checked the cleanout and found no debris. I knew the pump was working ,but producing no water. I had to change the pump as something? had destroyed the impellor blade. It was easy to reach- remove- install the new pump.
Video is great, it is insane that Whirlpool would not add an access panel to easily clean the drain filter... you have to remove the top, remove the control panel, remove the door latch, unlatch the rubber gasket, remove the front panel, just to clean something that should be cleaned at least yearly... getting the rubber gasket back on is not for the meek and probably has caused many injuries... if there are any engineers at Whirlpool, please listen and add an easy access door to clean drain filter.
@@dogwoodtales sorry!! I found it. Thank you!! I unclogged it. There was a patch for my jeans stuck in there. But I’m still getting an E01 F01 error code. It turns on but won’t stay on or run. I think I need a new drain pump....thanks again for the video...I didn’t take the whole thing apart tho. I just took the back off and reached my hand around the front of the filter and twisted and pulled it out. Some smelly water ran out but I was to clear everything. Still...I’m nervous I buy the pump and it STILL doesn’t work.
Lianne Rutty sorry I don’t remember and don’t have that washer anymore. It served us well for several years and probably thousands of load of laundry, but eventually they all burn out.
great video. I have the same model Washer. I'm thinking of drilling a 4" diameter hole through the metal front to get to the drain, and then using some magnetic round decorative thing to cover the hole. My dryer is stacked on top, so it is not easy to just pull it out and take the back off. Anybody every drill a big hole in the front of the washer?
I had the same thing happen about ever 4-6 months having to take apart washer and dryer (stacked) got to be a pain in the butt so fast easyer fix I used a 3in hole saw cut a hole in the washer right in front of the filter so I could clean out the filter and put it back when it gets back up with junk to cover the hole I just got a quad blank elect cover painted white screened on if done right looks like a factory access panel
+Dogwood Tales (Ray) nice I kept taking everything apart now 3mins I am done I also just put a large cookie sheet under so the water drains into it my washer runs every day I have 5 kids and 4 dogs
Scott Bruce -- Yeah, Im gonna have to do this too. Second time this year. Baby socks keep getting stuck. Probably will have to wash them in one of those mesh bra bags or something. This never happened in the upright non-HE washers!
Herr Wabbaloo it can happen with the front loaders because items can get caught by and then pulled into the gap between the inside and outside washer drums. I once had one of those coil wrapped pot holders get caught in there, unravel, and then wrap around the hub in the back of the drum. when the drum wasn't spinning freely I figured I figured needed a new bearing and it couldn't hurt to at least try to fix it. so I took it apart completely and then that's when I found the pot holder wrapped around the hub/axle. fortunately I was able to put it all back together.
Wow! No need to cut holes etc....! All you need to do to get to the pump is take off the BACK panel of the washer (a few screws). Then take out the 4 screws in line across the lower front part of the washer. Then reach in from the BACK of the washer and unscrew the filter thing which is located under the center point of the drum. You can get it done from the back when the front panel of the washer has been loosened. ALSO, while the washer is pulled out, clean out the little filters in the hot and cold water inlets at the top back of the washer. Just unscrew/pull them out gently with needle nose pliers applied around their sides, not in the middle of them...Mine are always clogged with little bits of calcium etc.
Taking the back panel only works if your filter is pointing to the side of the washing machine. As in this video, the drain points to the front. Unless you are a mouse, you can't get to the filter without removing the front of the washer. PAIN IN THE NECK! My sister can access her filter by pulling out a drawer at the front. Not a Whirlpool.
We had issues with our front loading cloths washer not draining properly. The problem was easy to correct. Getting to the problem ... not so easy. But the washer now works like new again! Yay! All is right with the world again - well insofar as doing laundry in my house is concerned anyway.
The thought occurred to me to cut a hole to access it, but I just didn't have the extra time for it that day. This design is just asinine to me. It's like putting the J trap to the kitchen sink inside the wall. The least they could have done was put the filter and pump in the back of the washer, so all I would have to do is remove the back panel.
...if you are a contortionist. Since its facing towards the "one piece front" you would think that logcally it was designed to be accessed from the front. I suppose some 'small and thin" people can possibly reach that drain from the back panel but I only weigh 180 pounds and its extremely difficult to access from the back panel, especially in an average house where space can sometimes be quite limited; trying to bend around and reach up to the front is ridiculous. If you can take the back panel off you may as well take the other two panels off to access it the way it was designed to be accessed (although a STAR BIT is required for the control panel screws) I took the front panel off and installed an access panel, like the older models used to have. Yo'u're supposed to clean that filter mechansxm once a month or risk burning up a pump or motor control board (mcu=325$+) from a serious clog. (LOUD SNAP an d there goes your washer until you order MCU for 300$ + repairman if you can't DIY) or pump or both....
If you have the same model/type I have it's a real PITA. I did go through this process in another video called "How to clean a clothes washer" (YT video code ceZohb6OsQA). I didn't really have to take off the back panel. Just the top panel and front panel. If you have the same type I have, that doesn't have a separate small panel in front to access that catch basket, I'd suggest cutting a hole in the panel just in front of the drain basket, so you can empty it as needed without having to take off the front panel. Good luck!
Connie Herrera the digital display reads 'sud'? I wasn't sure but a quick Google search indicates this is an issue with or caused by the detergent you're using.
!!!!! You can just take the back off and reach in - NO need to take the whole thing apart - There is enough room to remove the filter took about 20 minutes !!!!!!

This was not a very informative video. They did not show how to take off the front cover or the part that they showed at the end of the video. You have to understand that when people look up to find out how to DIY, you have to show from the basic to the advance, step by step.
This is so not the easy way to clear out this filter. Go from the front, all you have to do is remove three screws on the lower front panel. Then you don't have to attempt to remove the filter blindly.
