  • Type Three on the Enneagram is known as The Achiever or The Performer.
They are striving to feel outstanding.
Type Six is known as The Skeptic or The Troubleshooter. They are striving to feel safe and secure.
When that core motive still isn't clear, this video will give you additional clues to help you narrow it down -- or at least give you some new things to reflect on and get curious about.
Watch it here to gain more insight on:
    - why the Self-Preservation Three flavor can be a look-alike for a Six
    - getting energy from getting the results or planning to get to the results
    - relationship with emotions, especially anxiety
    - your planning style

I ruled out Type 5 because I’m not what is described as a private/secretive person and I’m not socially awkward. I am the self pres Type 3 countertype which made it hard to initially figure out. The Enneagram is indeed a powerful tool for self awareness, growth, and change. I love it!

Understanding the stress arrows of each can help provide additional clues - For a Type 3, they move to the stress behaviors of Type 9 - numbing out, being complacent or apathetic, allowing self-doubt to creep in, and losing some of their typical high energy. Type 6 on the other hand, moves to the stress behaviors of Type 3 (hence the confusion sometimes) where they may pour themselves into work to stay busy and avoid their anxiety, sometimes sabotaging their support systems, becoming competitive, and being more image conscious.

I ruled out 6 because in spite of a dominant self preservation instinct, I’m much more independent, not a fan of groups, like to work alone, and strive to be self sufficient.

That's helpful insight - in that case, it sounds like a Type 5 might be worth exploring a bit more to see if that is a better fit.

how would you describe someone who one one hand is more focus on the end result but in the other hand is also intense with feelings of anxiety and worries

great question - both types can be focused on the end result and experience feelings of anxiety and worry. For a type 3 that worry might be that the end result won't give them the image of being successful or outstanding, while the type 6 might be more worried that the result won't give them the safety (financially, physically, emotionally, etc.) that they're wanting. It all comes down to that core motive - Would you rather feel successful and outstanding (3) -or - feel safe and secure (6)?

This gives me more clarity between being a 3 or 6! I was tested by a therapist and even he wasn't sure if I am a 3 or 6. After your video, I feel more aligned with a 6 because of the intense anxiety I feel. However, I am an "achiever" as well. What subtype of 6 can look like a 3 in terms of achieving?

Glad it was helpful - thank you for sharing your feedback here! It's common for all types of 6s to identify as an "achiever" - the difference is what is driving it... Achieving from a place of anxiety and fear or achieving from a place of wanting to feel outstanding. A Transmitting Six (commonly known as Sexual Six) can be a bit more aggressive and action-oriented, sometimes "looking" like a 3 or 8.
