That doesnt sound that bad, However if you are not keepin up on the oil changes it will get worse. To help on keeping the varnish out of the system - what I did with my 2008 truck is Add WD40 and its seemed to clean out the varnish out of the lash adjusters by using a cap from a Tide laundry and making sure it was free of soap, I filled it with WD40 up to the level 5 from a spray can and poured it in while the engine was running at idle { you'll need about 4 cap fulls for a 5Liter engine } and let it work through the system. Oil thinning and Varnish are two bad culprits these engines have great problems. A good part of the cause is the way the engine is desighned as the oil lubes the drivers side first then the Passanger side gets whats left - a lower volume. It seems that Ford did not put a big enough oil pump in these engines, so that is the reason why the lash adjusters fail and the roller followers suffer and fail due to the starvation of oil. I would recomend that you go to a 5W30 oil and in extream cases during the summer to a 10W30 -But Keep the oil clean as possible and whatever you do DON'T follow the ford schedual of oil change interval or you'll wind up with a dead engine. It's a real shame that Ford didnt make a engine with stronger components. Look up Brians channel on you tube at {FordTeckMakkulocal } and listen to his advice
To me it sounds like it could be a noisy lash adjuster. I have an 06 F150 my truck had 189,000 Miles when I decided to do a timing job. I replaced almost everything new phasers new timing chains new tensioners installed a melling 80 psi high pressure oil pump to resolve the oil pressure issues and inspected and replaced the roller followers that were worn out and new VCTS however, I did not inspect all the Lash Adjusters. And a year later I had one start making noise it sounded just like your truck in the video. Normally if you have a bad roller follower the ticking sound is a lot more prominent and no matter if the vehicle is hot or cold it never changes. And if it was your phasers your truck would sound more like a diesel when it idles. If you have worn out timing chains depending on how bad they are and if you're plastic guides are still intact sometimes it can be super noisy and sometimes not. But normally if you have worn out timing chains one easy way to tell is when you drain your motor oil carefully inspect the oil for metal flakes what this is from is the timing chains slapping and rubbing against the aluminum front engine cover that's usually a solid sign your chains need replaced. I've noticed depending on what quality of motor oil you use really makes a difference on how the engine runs and performs like my engine for example. When I was running Mobil 1 I would hear a lot of noise coming from the valve train when my engine would idle but when I switched to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum all the noise virtually went away the engine ran smooth as butter. And as a good rule no matter what oil I use I never run it past 5000 miles. My truck is currently running at 218,000 miles and still going strong.
Mine is sitting at 227k with a tick not this bad but still hear it at hot idle. Cold starts she sounds smooth but once it gets hot it starts having a slighg tick. Still not 100% sure what it is but I think its a lash adjuster
I had this tick in my 05 for five years. A friend said try lucus oil treatment. I used 0ne guart lucas 6 guarts ford 5/30 and 75 % noise was gone 3000 miles later same thing again and 100% noise is gone. I have 241,000 miles on my truck. That shit works. @@rigoaparicio9929 try 5w-30 as it’s slightly thicker and provides better protection against the 5.4 that’s known to burn oil overtime. Many techs advise to move a grade up in oil and service for oil changes at 3-5k miles.
Almost certainly its the cam phasers. These are prone to failure because locking pin inside doesn't get enough oil pressure when 5w20 oil gets hot. The tapping noise is the pin moving back and forth in the 10 degree position. The noise will get quieter away when you rev the engine as the phaser changing the valve timing. Replace the phasers and if it has been doing if for a while, the roller followers and lash adjusters too. Check the cam and cam caps for excessive wear. Metal shavings from the locking pin in the phaser will plug oil passages in the cam damaging valve train parts, and causing pressure from the cam lobs on the roller followers to plow out your lash adjusters. The tapping noise is from some of these parts failing.

if it goes away, it's either leaking tensioner seals or the exhaust manifold(s). If it's the former, time to replace the tensioners and all other timing components. If it's an exhaust manifold, fix it, because the noise can hide other more serious ticking noises.
@@daltonweston7531 Don't think it's that, think it's the exhaust manifold... Might be cracked bad which will cause tapping sounds or it could be the timing chain is wore out.
About 170K miles is all this engine will do. Typically it's the rocker rollers on the third cylinder back on the passenger side, but could be other rocker rollers too. Easy fix. But the problem is, other components are about to fail too. So you're just chasing failure points. The cheapest fix is replace the engine when you start hearing this, because you're going to do it after a few repairs anyway.
Shoot, I got 187K on the clock and 5 trouble free years... They typically can over "170K", but it sounded like this guy was probably a little late on oil changes when he had it.

Check the cam and cam caps for excessive wear. inadequate oil pressure in the oil passages in the cam damaging valve train parts, and causing pressure from the cam lobs on the roller followers to plow out your lash adjusters. The tapping noise is from some of these parts failing.
If that still has power, just makes noise, chains, tensioners, guides and phasers. While you're in there do the water pump and oil pump. Check lifters and rockers since its apart...OR just drive it, it'll run like that.
its the rockers they wear down and get wobbly they wear the bearing on the roller need to take valve cover off and inspect them you will find the bad one if you dont the cam wears and then you have bigger bills of 350 to 400 for the cams parts only
It has to do with faulty parts and oil pump not sending enough oil to lifters. There is a guy on you tube that shows you what the problem is and how to fix it.
It doesn't matter it's your own fault. You you ran it and didn't change the oil or you ran it with low oil. All you had to do to fix it was to buy a bottle of STP treatment. And the ticking will go away.

if it goes away, it's either leaking tensioner seals or the exhaust manifold(s). If it's the former, time to replace the tensioners and all other timing components. If it's an exhaust manifold, fix it, because the noise can hide other more serious ticking noises.
Nope... cam followers... Usually starts on the number 3 cylinder...!
@Ike Roxie Sorry dude but these engines don't have rocker arms... The Ford 4.6 & 5.4 are overhead cam engines...
@Ike Roxie I built several and have a 4.6 L in my Ford F-150 right now
On occasion it's the lash adjuster too.
@Ike Roxie no they don’t, there not the same thing
UPDATE: just sold the truck about a month ago to a guy at work and he loves it didn't even realize there was a tick
Eclipse Guy damn tell him to buy mine must be hard hearing lmao
Eclipse Guy when u still had it, did u notice that when u accelerate and it's at night RPM's, it didn't run as quicker?
Eclipse Guy high RPM's, correction.

Oh it’s a 2008 with only 157,000 miles
Those 5.4 tritons have the loudest fuel injectors in vehicle history
There is no lifters.
There are rollers and they go bad
My truck sounds the same way
It’s the pin inside the cam phaser taping on the cam phaser, it’s normal no big deal won’t hurt anything
@@daltonweston7531 Don't think it's that, think it's the exhaust manifold... Might be cracked bad which will cause tapping sounds or it could be the timing chain is wore out.
@@kellyoubrejr544 Ford timing chains do not wear out
@@daltonweston7531 Yes they do lol, any timing chain can wear out... They are probably long lasting chains tho.
That tick is a cam phaser pin
About 170K miles is all this engine will do. Typically it's the rocker rollers on the third cylinder back on the passenger side, but could be other rocker rollers too. Easy fix. But the problem is, other components are about to fail too. So you're just chasing failure points. The cheapest fix is replace the engine when you start hearing this, because you're going to do it after a few repairs anyway.
Shoot, I got 187K on the clock and 5 trouble free years... They typically can over "170K", but it sounded like this guy was probably a little late on oil changes when he had it.
I’m on my 4th 5.4 3V Ford. 2012 Expedition 220K currently.
I’ve never had phaser, chain, guides, cam followers on any of them. Strict 3,000 oil/filter change is the secret. Also I’m the only driver, and I’m light footed
vct solonoid
"Pc Of Crap" lmao ......
My 2000 F150 4.6 is ticking / taping sound come from the passenger side of the motor when I give it gas sound goes faster 😞😭 help 🙏🏽
This is the best Ford mechanic I’ve seen in UA-cam

My 2001 ford f150 5.4 has the same ticking sound what can it be??
Check the cam and cam caps for excessive wear. inadequate oil pressure in the oil passages in the cam damaging valve train parts, and causing pressure from the cam lobs on the roller followers to plow out your lash adjusters. The tapping noise is from some of these parts failing.
Also it could be a cracked exhaust manifold.
Cambia aceite nuevo
i have the same
Did you ever figure out what this was? Mine is doing the same thing
TacticalTerrorizer I'm pretty sure it's the lifters or the cam phasers
If that still has power, just makes noise, chains, tensioners, guides and phasers. While you're in there do the water pump and oil pump. Check lifters and rockers since its apart...OR just drive it, it'll run like that.
Eclipse Guy the cam phasers fail like crazy on the 3v 5.4 engine i see them blown up constantly
its the rockers they wear down and get wobbly they wear the bearing on the roller need to take valve cover off and inspect them you will find the bad one if you dont the cam wears and then you have bigger bills of 350 to 400 for the cams parts only
I have a 2006 F150 5.4 111000 Mi same thing
did you figure it out, i have the same truck and issue?
It has to do with faulty parts and oil pump not sending enough oil to lifters. There is a guy on you tube that shows you what the problem is and how to fix it.
trust me vct valve definitely
what is that exactly
Abazan RAMON what's the vct valve?
@@joeyh7796 variable cam timing
Horrible engine. Ford lived up to its bad rep when they put this one out.
It doesn't matter it's your own fault. You you ran it and didn't change the oil or you ran it with low oil. All you had to do to fix it was to buy a bottle of STP treatment. And the ticking will go away.
There is a problem with the lifters and oil pump on these engines. You can look it up on this channel.
@@bloodangel9489 Haven't experienced it with mines? I got 187K on the clock of mines and 5 trouble free years.
Edit: the guy on here said it's faulty rollers and weak oil pump.
American made junk. Ill stick with Toyota , honda , mazda , nissan , .
