Thanks so much Matt! Your videos have been incredibly helpful!! For the absolute best results would you recommend trying to only ever shoot either at ISO 800 and ISO 3200 and using Aperture and an ND filter to compensate? If so, is it possible to set the Sony a7iv to only switch between those 2 ISO's? Thanks again :)
@@ExploringAlternatives Glad to help! Yes I would stick to those 2 ISOs. There's no way to switch automatically between the 2 of them though. If you want that ability you would need an FX3 or FX30 and use CINE EI Mode.
@@whoismatt Thanks so much for your reply Matt, that was super helpful! Looking forward to your next videos :)
not free lol
Love the video thanks for the help. Question. I’ve used premiere for a decade now but peeps are telling me to switch to resolve now especially for motion graphics. Thoughts?
Always a great help. Always tune in to you for advice on everything!! Thanks Matt!
I was typing while my base iso changed to 800 and you covered that. Ok. I’m really happy I found this channel. Subbed and liked and will watch all your future videos. Keep up the awesome work. ❤
Thank you for all the A7IV videos, Matt!
Thanks so much for this! Looking forward to reviewing all your a7iv content
This was extremely helpful and to the point!! Thank you!
Fantastic video- simple short and straight to the point
This is by far the best video about filming in slog3 that I’ve ever seen. Thanks for that!
One of the best explanations, thank you so much 😊
Ufff man. So deep. I feel like a complete noob. I finally just barely understood and have a decent understand on basics of manual mode. But now I wanna take another step and this seems intense. But you speak so clearly. And it’s so helpful. I wanna get the most out of my camera. So here we go!
Soo crisp and clear explanation. Thank you...
I was waiting for this content, thanks Matt. A good topic would be how we can match the slog3 of the sony a7 iv with the a7III (I have both cameras).
Great video !!!! Thank you for sharing !
Found it very informative
Thanks Brother ❤️
Ive completely stopped over exposing slog 3 and use Phantom Luts, and Ive never been happier with my footage.
The dynamic range is nuts. No more blown out skies ❤️
You use phantom luts in camera?
@@EzraaaDave no, in editing.
@@kaimultivideo4956 but those are 2 different things. you setup your filming to have a better editing. why would you not over exposed if slog3 requires that to get the highest DR
… and with Black Magic Video Assist 12G you can import Phantom LUTs to see the final result on the monitor or other LUTs you prefer.
Do you have to use a conversion LUT before the applying the phantom luts? About to buy them.
hey, you are a life saver, coz of your amazing tutorials SIMPLIFIED cinematic tutorial i have bought a Sony a7iv, just to try how the sony works. I have resolved lots of things. thanks mate. you have saved my A*#. thanks again. i have learnt S-log. now my work floor gonna be really fast and superb quality. add one thing, i have set auto ISO + blocking my exposure 1.7. now i think out door i have to use a ND filter if i want to use 1.4f otherwise indoor im really done. coz ISO is really less noise with a7IV. now im not fear to invest on FX3. bless you man. soon im gonna buy your lut pack as well. then copy and past IM DONE. cheers
Thank you, that was a big help and easy explanation
MATT!!! you just helped me out so much thank you!!!!
Pretty informative vid, mate!
Easy to understand! Double-Like
Thank you so much Matt. you are awesome
Helpful video, thanks!
Thanks Mat for this great video. However, on my camera, when using the manual mode just like you, when I set the ISO to a specific value (800 for exemple), I lose controle on the exposition (MM), the value change and I cant block it on a specific value. The only way for me to block MM on a specific value is to use "auto ISO" but this not a good alternative either as I want to keep my ISO on 800 . What can I do ?
perfect video thnks dude !
Thanks for the learnings.
you are the best this is so good settings blow my costumers brain so happy
Thank you so much I have a much better understanding because of this video seriously wow.
Thank you so much for this tutorial :)
Matt, thank you so much my dear friend!!!👍
tell us more about your preferable autofocus modes )) thank you
Your explanation is perfect
Thank you so much boss you really helped me
Hi! Thank you so much for this video. Do you recommend any ND filter in particular to be able to shoot at ISO 800 most of the time? Thank you. I also have the SONY A7 IV with 50mm and 85mm.
I'm learning everything about my camera from you Sir. And waiting for your videos like menu settings for both Photography and Video Shooting and how to expose properly in SLOG3 with Sony A1 camera. Main thing I wanna know is what is the Base ISO of the Sony A1 or which is the noise free sweet spot for the Sony A1 Camera? Please reply if you can. Thanks..
Welp, there go my plans for the day. I’ll be outside testing out this new technique. I have a love/hate relationship with this channel. I love the sensible approach to everything, but hate that it inspires me to drop everything and go do it! 🤣
Along with Zebras, use Gamma Display Assist set to S-Log3, which will allow you to see more or less what your footage will look like after transforming it back into Rec.709, allowing you to judge white balance a lot more easily :) I also recommend setting the toggle for Gamma Display Assist to a custom button, so you can easily toggle it on and off when in video mode.
I know it’s a great tool, but the footage always looks horrible when I go over to gamma assist. I prefer to see the footage flat personally.
bro, I just made a video.. can you answer my question about metering... For example, I shot at SLOG 3 and finished metering, if I shoot at a fixed angle, it's ok, it's okay ya. problem.. but for example when moving indoors to outdoors is almost like vlog or character tracking, is it necessary to re-measure? because then the EV will automatically change and no longer +2 as measured ... is there any way to fix it !!! Is it possible to leave the ISO automatically? Really thanks a lot!
I’m so grateful for you brother I really am
Finally someone who could explain this to me. Thank you SO MUCH. To say this topic made me furious is an understatement 😂😂
Dude. Youre so clutch. Literally the best tutorial on slog. Subbed!
super tuto, never understood what was slog3 and how to use it. Do you have a basic tuto explaining how to import and proces a slog3 inside adobe premiere, just to see how to proceed (also with your LUT) ? any tuto on cintenone which seems "plug and play" for beginners ? coming from my iphone 12 pro max videos, for family and events videos, in order not to explode my hard disk, which format would you advise to use. I have understood HD is not sharp and H265 is less universal.
merci pour ces précisions. Avons-nous aussi ces 2 ISO natifs en profil "normal"? merci
This is the videography equivalent to the San Andreas cheat code sheets i had as a kid ahahah great video Matt!!
i like this channel so much even before watching i jst like the video first
Hi Matt thanks for another great video. 2 questions: 1. after following all your instructions, as more and more light is coming into the camera, it looks like the zebra is starting to show way after the +2.0 is blinking. that makes me want to ask, what is the zebra +94 setting good for? if i'm 2 stops over the blinking +2.0 and still no zebra stripes are showing, so what use is there for the zebra +94 setting? the second question is: when i expose +1.7 to +2.0 - the histogram does not show over exposing and also in the camera montior the image looks properly exposed, so with my eye or histogram i do not see any over exposure. so the only over-exposing in this case is from the multi-metering mode that shows that i'm around 1.7-2.0? is that all the "over exposure" that happens?
thanks for your tutorial, can I use this preset on a7iii camera?
Thanks alot bro lots of love form India ❤
thank u u just teached my how to record slog3
Great video 🙏🙌🙌🔥
Thanks bro!
I wish you made tutorials on color grading in FCPX
Quick question. My wife and I will both be shooting with a Sony A1 for an upcoming project. I want to try out SLOG 3 for it, but she’s not quite as comfortable with camera settings. If I set her camera to auto ISO and set the M.M. to stay firm at +1.7, do you think the results would still be solid?
thanks so much!
Awesome video! Tho I just have a question, is there not a way to view what you're filmic in sRGB? Like for example on a blackmagic camera, you can film in BRAW but the monitor will display it with a lut so you can better see your colors.
are you able to control compensation bracketing even on manual ISO? or do you use auto ISO to have control in it?
thx man!
Hey Matt! Love your videos!! I have watched several of your videos about SLOG and I would love to know how you overexpose for a reception and exit at a wedding? I have scoured the internet trying to find some help on this and have had no luck. Every time I try to overexpose in SLOG for a low-light situation, it turns out looking terrible and noisy. Would love it if you did a video on reception/lowlight settings for SLOG. Thanks!!
I just watched the last part of the video and now I feel like an idiot. Sorry. Thanks though!!!
So helpful
Great video as usual sir!
By the way, after about 20 years of using premiere I have officially switched to DaVinci Resolve!
Editing s-log3 in the colour tab there is incredible and if you haven’t tried it I would highly suggest it.
Using a ‘proper’ node setup like WB > exposure > rec709 conversion > creative look is sooooo good!
What are you using for rec709 conversion? :)
@@wadelambert I use a simple node setup using the colour space transform “effect” or you can set it up in the colour management settings if you know all the footage was shot the same way
@@bakerfx4968 what creative look do you suggest
Great videos the best I’ve seen so far about these issues with slog3 and s cine tone… so if we stick to iso 800 or 3200, we can only adjust with the aperture , or use an ND filter, but what about the shutter speed? Do we need to leave it at double the frame rate , or we can use different values ? Thank you !!!
You can change shutter speed to no difference in image quality. But it will affect motion blur
What would be the best gamma/gamut to shoot a candlelit bedroom night scene with a sony a7c/a7iv? Also any other tips to minimize noise or things to keep in mind?
thank you
Hi Matt,
Regarding metering, would you ever suggest to set Auto ISO and peg metering at +1.7? I'm thinking that might work in low light situations?
Hi there, currently this is my situation, i set up Auto ISO between 800 and 3200, in low light it always go up to 3200 and in day light it goes to 800, i normally never see other values, but i still have to try more, also i can always set to 1.7
I don't know if it's the correct way to do it but it's thee only way that i can overexpose slog 3 every time
Thanks a lot
what do u recommend for low light?id never use slog for low light stuff, cine2?
Thank you for you intersting video! Just one question.
With the Sony A7 IV, is it possible to film with a LUT that applies directly to the video?
I ask this because with S-Log 2 or S-Log 3, it is difficult to see what you are recording. Pictures are too dull.
You can activate "Gamma Display Assist" - then it looks closer to rec709 on camera - the footage is still SLOG3 thought :-)
It would be great to create a video like this for CINE EI per the firmware update on the FX3 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Matt, is there a way to set a picture profile only when shooting video? When I switch back to stills mode, the picture profile stays on.
Honestly. great
Hi!
How can we make this transition you have from ungraded to graded footage in DaVinci Resolve?
How do you get the multi metering to show up on the display? Mine has the exposure comp and I can't find the option to change it.
thx!
Thanks for your excellent advices ! PP for SLOG-3 seems to be "9", am i wrong ?
PP9 in A7S3
ISO no 1 = 640 / ISO no 2 = 12800 (no Noise)
Hello Matt, does it matter is my shutter speed is 1/50 (rather than 1/100) when shooting at 50FPS?
Hi the same setup is for indoor filming? Or for cooking videos? For zebras ofcourse. I don't need setup C1 standard+range? Only the C2?
Best regards from Poland 🇵🇱
thanks for the review/setup Matt. Question: I've contemplated getting the A7Siii for sometime. Still remains a popular camera and doesn't seem to be coming down in price anytime soon. I shoot primarily video! Do you think the A7IV is equal in performance, options as the Siii? I like that it's considerably more affordable.
Got a video comparing the two coming out next week 😉
The ability to crop in and maintain full focus features is great for prime shooters on a7iv. however this isnt quite as awesome as the slow motion settings on siii. there are some good prices on siii out there if you search hard.
If you need to overexpose all the time how do you set the camera then for doing moody/darker or silhouette shots?
So do you have to stay in the base iso range so if I’m at a concert or event and it’s dark can I push the iso pass 3200 or no ?
Hey man, is it important to have Slog3 in PP8 or can I also change the gamma and color mode to Slog3 but in PP2?
Is it possible to set your range for auto iso and still shoot in slog3 cine?
you are awesome
Hey Matt do you recommend using manual mode and set iso to automatic for run and gun?
Always use manual mode including manual iso
Does the same apply to Sony a7iii?
Thanks for the video. When should we pump up the ISO to 12800 in low light situations.
You don't need to do that. The a7iv doesn't get cleaner at 12800
@@whoismatt which Sony cameras prefer 12800 Iso in low light situations. I have seen many videos telling to pump up the Iso all the way up to 12800. They say it's the point where the camera switches to low light mode. Please reply.
@@rakeshdharan1571 watch the iso setup portion of this video at 4:50. The only cameras that look better in lowlight at ISO 12800 are the a7siii and fx3.
@@whoismatt ok.. Thanks for confirmation
Does this apply to the fx3 as well?
Can you explain why do we use it at all and then apply colors later when we can just film in real color
Hi,
Which picture profile would you recommend when filming at a wedding with the Sony a73 and a74? Cine4 and slog3 or?
Best regards
Pp8 Cine4 for both
you mean avoid using in between those iso it means iso 850 - 3100 has visible noise in it ?
Really wish there was an option to have Profile picture active when in video mode but when switching to video having it turned off. I know that you can set memory 1, 2 or 3 on the top dial but I wish there was another way around. I could easily see myself forget about switching the top dial when going from photo to video.
Q: which mode to shoot in ? A,M, etc….Also RAW or Jpeg ?
what is the base iso for the a7r5?
Matt - I'm seeing lots of 'Tubers saying DON'T over-expose SLOG3. Why do you recommend doing so? Why isn't everyone on the same page?
Thanks for the video Matt. Is it possible to demonstrate how you film in slog 3 on a bright sunny day with an ND filter at 24fps (1/50), 800 ISO and f2.8? How do you get the exposure?
You either need a ND Filter with more stops or you have to adjust your fstop (bye bye 2.8 😉)
@@eike.zenderI need that shallow depth of field but thanks
@@patrickpato9682 yeah, so you need a stronger ND Filter or you have to diffuse the light - that's just how it works. Search for the yt channel "epic light media" - they have a ton of good tutorials.
@@eike.zender I appreciate
I use an A7Siii and with the base ISO of 640 2.8 is often too bright in daylight for my 1-5 ND. To keep the 2.8, I'll either increase shutter speed, or put the 5-9 ND on. With the base 800 ISO, you would be doing yourself a great favor by investing in a high quality 5-9 ND.
Fucking G video! Thanks for taking your time to show us in detail how this madness works!😅🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
This video helped a tooooon!
Hey Matt, what about mixing clips in s-lo3 and s-cinetone in one project? Can it work to shoot brighter scenarios s-cinetone (iso100/500) and darker scenarios s-log3 (iso800/3200). Good or bad idea?
It should work but the contrast will need to be tweaked as you edit
@@whoismatt thanks a lot !🙂
I don’t get the profiles after selecting pp8. Anyone know why? Does slog 3 need to be in 10bit?
Shutter speed is fixed 1/50?
Im getting a ton of noise with these settings even mid day at 800 iso. Im not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any ideas?
Even with your Zebras on, in post i have things that are way to overexposed when i convert to rec709. The raw footage is fine. I dont get it.
Everything is fine bro but only one problem is we cannot see the focus area and in the bright weather we can't even see the camera display, how can we concentrate more on focus 😊
