💜💜 Jack Lemmon (1925-2001) and Walter Matthau (1920-2000) - They were the absolute LEGENDS of world cinematography! I understand that young people do not know this - but it is true! 🤩 And Ann-Margret was loved by men for decades - she was one of the most beautiful and sexiest women in Hollywood!
The sequel is a near-perfect mirror image of this movie. Both are extremely enjoyable. More importantly, except for on small portion of the plot, the sequel treads new ground and doesn't feel like a rehash of the original. I never considered this a holiday movie but as it covers both Thanksgiving and Christmas, it's a worthy addition to the group.
Neil Simon was one of the writers of "Your Show of Shows" on television, along with Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Larry Gelbart (M*A*S*H television), Mel Tolkin & Danny Simon. Perhaps the greatest writing team of all time. His plays and movie adaptations are simply brilliant!
Being a Swede it almost feels like the plot is taking place in Sweden - the character John Gustafson of Swedish decent, Swedish-born actress Ann-Margret (Olsson) and the winter landscape all combined. When I first watched this film some 30 years ago I could imagine the grumpy men's lives - now I am older than the characters and can identify with them even more. Time really flies.
Not sure if you know this, but Minnesota and the upper-Midwest were settled by a lot of Scandinavian immigrants to the United States in the late 1800s. Plenty of Scandinavian based heritage can still be seen throughout the region.
@@george8873 Right, and it's hardly a coincidence that the Minnesota area became the new home from so many people from Scandinavia. Like I said, it looks just like the area where I grew up.
I was married to my wonderful wife for 30 years. This was always one of her favorite movies. She passed away in 2014 and I miss her so much every day. We used to watch this at least once a year. This is the first time I've seen it since then and it brings back so many good memories. Thank you for showing it and happy Thanksgiving
One of the rare films I think you should watch the sequel. It feels like one long story about these 2 guys, but the sequel we see more things tied together. Plus, it adds Sophia Loren to the cast. Also, Burgess Meredith is pure gold and steals every scene he's in.
This film re-introduced me to how good of a team Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau were. It was after seeing this film, I watched what many consider to be their best work: The Odd Couple (1968). I do hope that you’ll react to their sequel Grumpier Old Men (1995), as well as other movies they made like Out To Sea (1997), and The Odd Couple II (1998).
I'm glad you enjoyed this. I was their bodyguard for a special event in their honor in L.A.. Their friendship and appreciation for each other was very apparent. They made several buddy movies together and are all worth watching.
Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are the greatest movie double act of all time, together and individually, they are always on form and entertaining. The odd couple is a classic ! Jack Lemmon is brilliant in " The apartment", and Walter Matthau equally so in " Charlie Varrick " . Nothing and no one in today's movies can hold a candle to these two fine actors or the films they left us with.
Ariel was played by Ann-Margret, the Swedish model/actress who captivated the silver screen alongside her then bf Elvis Presley in Viva Las Vegas (1963). She also just released a rock album last year (2023) “Born To Be Wild” mere weeks before her 82nd birthday. Ann-Margret is absolutely an icon with plenty of classic films well worth watching on this channel!
This movie has held a special place for me ever since I saw it as a kid, it's got such a heartwarming feel that's so hard to find in movies nowadays. Glad you guys enjoyed.
In 1964, Ann Margaret visited my dad's ship (USS Ranger) with the USO. In 1999 when my dad was working for Burt Reynolds, she was staying at BR's house. My dad got to meet her, and she signed his Cruise Book.
@@elessartelcontar9415 The critics were very unkind because of her views on reincarnation/afterlife. She had the last laugh with a cameo in Defending Your Life(1991).
Both Jack Lemmon & Walter Matthau were such good friends and both enjoyed their time here in Minnesota filming, they both bought homes/cabins in this state after they completed the movie. Now you'll of course have to watch the 2nd one.
The outtakes in this movie are probably funnier than 90% of the movies that come out nowadays. Burgess Meredith was epic! Love both this and its sequel. Pure humor!
Jack Lemmon (John) is considered one of the best actors of all time. He won 2 oscars and received the life time achievement award. He's a big part of movie history. Walter Matthau (Max) was best known for his comedy but was a dramatic actor as well. He also won an oscar. A Matthau movie you should really check out is "Charade". It has an absolutely amazing cast, filled with big stars. The plot is mind blowing and has the audience completely guessing in many directions all through the entire movie. Ann Margaret was considered a huge sex symbol in her day. She had an extensive movie career as well. Thanks for bringing these two iconic stars that worked together a lot out to 'you tube' on your reaction channel.
True story: The town I grew up in had a small college. We also had a lake that always had several ice houses (fishing shanty to you girls) on it every winter. The college had a visiting professor from a country that never sees snow and ice. The college gave the professor a tour of this fairly small town, which included a drive around the lake. At the conclusion of the tour the college representative asked the visiting professor if she had any questions. She said, just one. "Why do they make all the poor people live out on the lake?". It seemed hilarious at the time, but I guess if you've never seen snow and ice how would you ever know about the ice fishing aspect of winter in the north.
I think it's less about not living in a region of the world that gets cold to know about ice-fishing but rather about not being worldly, after all ice-fishing is an extremely ancient art that goes back to primordial times and even some arctic animals wait by natural holes in the ice to catch fish such as penguins, polar bears and seals (which could be how humans learned to do it by watching nature do it first). Documentaries and books could have informed the professor, but she probably didn't possess the interest during her life.
@@kristinaF54I mean, speaking as someone born and raised (primarily) in Texas but who visited 20+ countries and lived in Japan for 3 years before I turned 18 due to my dad's job... it is probably also about the "not living in a region of the world that gets cold enough for ice fishing" part of the equation. The visiting professor lady reportedly not knowing anything about the topic doesn't mean she was totally uncurious about the world outside of her comfort zone--there's only so much time and attention anyone has to try and learn everything about everywhere. In my case, I never saw an ice fishing shack with my own two eyes growing up--I ended up learning about them from TV shows and movies slowly over time. Grumpy Old Men MIGHT have been the first time I ever saw them, in fact. But then there was also Fargo (1996) later on and more recently seasons of the Fargo TV show (2014-present). And likely other pop cultural ice fishing moments in between the 1990s and the 2020s that I just can't recall at the moment.
Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau were good friends and made about 10 movies together. They had great on screen chemistry. They were the original “Odd Couple” (1968)
If you like these 2, there's the sequel, and The Odd Couple (1968) is a must, and an absolute classic. The sequel is also very funny too. They were also in a couple of movies in the 90s like this one, including Out To Sea. These guys fit the 90s like a glove.
Out to Sea is my favorite out of all of 'em, I think. I used to watch it so much that I can't believe the VHS I had of it back in the day never wore out.
Walter Mathaue and Jack Lemmon were MASSIVE movie stars in their younger years. Just think of them as like our...Chris Pratt and Chris Hemsworth. Imagine when we're old trying to tell the young ones how great they were.
"The Odd Couple" 1965 Broadway stage play comedy by Neil Simon was so successful that Hollywood turned it into a film for 1968 which also was so successful that it became a popular tv sitcom in the 1970's. The movie "The Odd Couple" starred Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau and continues to have a high audience rating today. Yet another film to watch someday.
OK - add these to your list! :) Jack Lemon was in Some Like it Hot (1959) with Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis (Jamie Lee's dad)... Walter Matthau was in Charade (1963) with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn (and, yes, Dennis the Menace)... Ann Margaret was in Bye-Bye Birdie (1963) with Dick Van Dyke - it's a Broadway musical so idk if those are hard to get around, with copyright. She was also in the 3rd Santa Clause, with Tim Allen. If you haven't seen that one, it's a great!
Been a fan of Jack Lemmon for a decently long time considering my late Gen X birth. First because of Grumpy Old Men and some of their other 90s movies while I was in HS and college, but also then from getting into Glengarry Glen Ross, especially from the Apartment... and recently, my wife and I finally watched Some Like it Hot (after Sunset Boulevard) after meaning to for years. Slow but steady drip of the classic movies I didn't catch in the 80s and 90s, IOW. I'm HOPING to see more Walter Matthau films (besides Odd Couple and Grumpy Old Men and so forth) at some point, thanks to you and a few other commenters for the Charade reference, that sounds like one to start with.
Such a sweet and heartwarming film, despite all appearances or expectations. LOVE the pairing of Jack Lemmon and Walter Mathau. God bless both men. And boy does the movie make you cry at parts. The scene that gets me the most is when Max asks where John is in the hospital, is asked if he’s friend or family, and after he has the contemplative pause, he says, “Friend.”
Lemmon and Mathau together is pretty much gold. I would suggest The Odd Couple with them but it's been so long since I've seen it, I don't know if it holds up.
@@donrichards271the play still packs it in today so the movie should hold up as well. Unlike most of the scripts that come out today, the writing in Odd Couple is timeless.
Seeing fifty and a bit years old Ann-Margaret Olsson makes me feel old. Right now I am squarely in between the ages that Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon were when Grumpy Old Men was released.
This ought to be pretty awesome. Just watched it again last week. Grumpier Old Men is also good. Matthau and Lemmon were a great comedy duo with quite a few films together.
Such big stars. John was Jack Lemon. Max was Walter Mathau. Ariel was Ann-Margaret. Jack and Walter were the co-stars of the original Odd Couple movie many years ago. Both have made many great movies. Ann-Margaret was in the film version of Bye Bye Birdie, and in Viva Las Vegas with Elvis. She was also in Newsies, and starred in a western with John Wayne too. The guy who played Max's son was in A Few Good Men as part of Tom and Demi's team. You two get more adorable all the time. For the Christmas season you guys (if you haven't ever seen it) should watch the 1951 version of A Christmas Carol. He is the very best Scrooge ever. I watch it at least once a year and often watch the end of it several more times to see his scene after his change of attitude. Hope you try it. Enjoy!!
What's cool is Jack Lemmon and Walter Mathau were best friends in real life. They were great together. The whole cast in these movies are great. Ya have to do the sequel. It's just as good.
Movies they made together as stars, The Fortune Cookie (1966), The Odd Couple (1968), The Front Page (1974), Buddy Buddy (1981), Grumpy Old Men (1993), The Grass Harp (1995), Grumpier Old Men (1995) The best two, imho, are Fortune Cookie and Odd Couple. Jack and Walter were huge stars with many, many great movies.
Both Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau were Oscar-winning actors, and dear friends in real life. Their chemistry is apparent in The Odd Couple, The Odd Couple II (made decades after the first one), Out To Sea, The Front Page, The Fortune Cookie, and Grumpier Old Men (which you need to see!!!). They also both appeared in Oliver Stone's JFK but did not share screen time in it. Some great Movies with them on their own: Lemmon - Mister Roberts (Best Supporting Actor Oscar), Tuesdays With Morrie, The Apartment (MUST SEE, Best Picture winner!!!), Some Like It Hot (with Marilyn Monroe), That's Life!, My Fellow Americans, The Out-Of-Towners, and Bell, Book, and Candle. Matthau - I.Q., The First Monday In October, The Bad News Bears, California Suite, The Sunshine Boys, Hello Dolly! (with Barbra Streisandd), and Plaza Suite.
For Matthau I need to add mention of THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE (1974), one of the 70s best action/thriller films. For Jack Lemmon, GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS (1992) and THE CHINA SYNDROME (1992).
These are two acting juggernauts that did a lot of films together. The sequel is really good too. This has been on my list for you guys to watch for a while and Im glad you scratched it off the list.
I saw this with my grandma when this came out in theaters. What a great experience! This movie, and it's sequel, will always be special to me. I'm just glad they're good movies.
I'm looking forward to their reaction here. This is an all-star type movie for baby-boomers and maybe even gen-x. Ann-Margaret was a favourite of everyone in the 60s. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau starred the "The Odd Couple (1968)", which became a TV show everyone watched for years. Burgess Meredith was terrific from WWII on for decades.
This is also a childhood movie for us older Millennials, it introduced me to Matthau, Lemmon, Ann Margaret, Burgess Meredith, Daryl Hannah, and Kevin Pollak.
@@wagonmaster1974 Memory is a funny thing. As soon as I read your reply, I thought "of course". Amazing I got the TV show and the movie confused. Thanks.
This film is a great reaction choice. This brings me memories of my grandfather and I spending time together watching and crying of laughter. Died of cancer almost four years ago now and he was my second father helped raised my siblings and I. R.I.P. Pop
We(the 50's, 60's, and early 70's generation) loved seeing the original "Odd Couple" guys brought back together. And yes, topped off with Burgess Meredith(the 60's live action Penguin villain). RIP to my childhood/teen/young adult actors. OH and a thankyou to a major crush growing up, Ann Margret.... wuuf...sigh.
I was 41 when this came out and I loved it. At 71, I love it even more. Old guys are just young guys with bodies that are falling apart. LOL Ann Margaret was 52 when she did this film. The sequel has Ann Margaret and Sophia Loren.
Thanks for reminding me how much fun this movie is! I feel like they now need to see the two of them when they were younger as well - obviously The Odd Couple for both, but Lemmon in The Apartment and Matthau in Charade are also a couple worthy classics!
Being from Minnesota, with a grandmother from Wabasha, this is has been a long time family favorite of ours, and captures the character of WWII-era Minnesotans with remarkable accuracy. I’m sure you’ll get to it, but Grumpier (the sequel) is another gem! I absolutely love your channel, Cassie. Been with you since Hacksaw Ridge. You really won me over with LOTR, and now this! Cheers!
It really does! My grandpa was from Faribault and Max's wardrobe could have been taken from his closet. There's such a nostalgia in this movie (and I now live a few blocks from the block of Hiawatha where the houses are), and I'm so happy they enjoyed this one.
@@caseyd9471 Me, too! (Though this film seems reeeeally up both Cassie and Carly's alley for sure). You're bang on with the nostalgia comment, same here. I hesitated to tell them if they happened to end up in Wabasha and went to Slippery's, brace for impact, it looks nothing like the film in there! Haha, just a film being a film. The spirit of it is what counts ultimately, and this one's a homerun far as I'm concerned
I live in Wabasha, Minnesota...where this movie takes place, and I graduated from Winona State University (where Aerial says she's a professor). Every year our town has the "Grumpy Old Men Days"...😁
There's stories about when they were filming that Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau actually told the production company to cancel one of their hotel rooms. The two of them shared a room.
Here's a detail I overlooked in the 30 years of watching this film: that tune he hums at the end is Barber of Seville, the same tune he hums in The Fortune Cookie (1966). I just now realized that.
So have you never seen either Jack Lemmon or Walter Matthau before? Wow. Jack Lemmon was basically the Tom Hanks of the 1960s, the charming everyman comic who could make you smile even when starring in a movie called "How to Murder Your Wife". (Not my first recc, but fun.) Like Hanks, he also did some more serious roles, from "Days of Wine and Roses" (1962), to his Oscar for "Save The Tiger" (1972) to the one he should have gotten for "Missing", ten years later. (Although the competition was good that year. You can make a nice case for Paul Newman in "The Verdict", too.. Who also lost.) (This barely scratches the surface of my Lemmon recommendations. I mean, "The Apartment" is sheer brilliance.) Walter Matthau had started playing villain roles, but he and Lemmon found wonderful comic chemistry in "The Fortune Cookie" (1966) and "The Odd Couple" (1968) and so they did a few more together, but didn't want to get pigeon-holed, but this was such a success that they filled up the rest of the 1990s pretty much joined at the hip. Matthau also did serious work ("The Laughing Policeman", which is *not* a comedy, and the original "The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3" in 1974, opposite Robert Shaw, whom you remember from "Jaws") but because he was not conventionally handsome, he also played in films such as "Hello, Dolly" (with Barbara Streisand) and "Cactus Flower" [1971], with Ingrid Bergman (almost 30 years after "Casablanca") and Goldie Hawn, about 15 years before "Overboard", (So glad you saw "Overboard". For a moment I was worried I would have to describe Goldie as "Kate Hudson's mother" and that made me die inside.) Ariel is played by Ann-Margaret, who was the Gorgeous Female of the early 1960s. You must see her opposite Elvis Presley in "Viva Las Vegas" (1962), which is pretty much the quintessential Elvis film. The IRS agent is played by Buck Henry, who has fine comedic timing for small roles like this, but is best known as a screenwriter, most famous for "The Graduate" (1968), which is a MUST-see. (I mean, "One word, Benjamin:" is pne of the iconic lines in filmdom. [I am deliberately omiting the context, as I want Cassie unspoiled.]) Buck also wrote the exquisite 1971 comedy "Cold Turkey", which is NOT a Thanksgiving film. Christopher MacDonald (Mike) was Shooter McGavin, but his classic role was in "Quiz Show" (1987) Kevin Pollak (Jake) not only works well here and in "The Usual Suspects", but he's a very funny stand-up comedian who does perhaps the best impression of William Shatner ever. Which is perhaps irrelevant to a movie channel, but I wanted to give Kevin his props. And if you've made it through all this, a BIG thumbs up to Carly. I can't stand cheese, either. And it's everywhere! Cheeseburgers, pizza, mac and cheese, grilled cheese (wtf?)…ew, ew, ew, ew, ew! They even try to ruin Philly Steaks by putting cheese on them! Now if you also hate coffee, you are my idol, lol. Happy Thanksgiving!
Well, I dunno if Cassie or Carly read it all, but I did. tl;dr isn't really in my vocabulary, unless I literally don't have time for something, in which case I'll make an effort to get back to it later. ;) Most importantly, you used plenty of paragraphs to help the flow of a long post (though I've recently discovered some smart TV youtube apps do not display paragraphs in comments, so it all gets lumped into one giant block of text!). Great summary of the cast's other work there (I especially love the Apartment (watched it at least 2 or 3 times, most recently to introduce my wife to it)... and you just reminded me I did once see (most of) Pelham 1-2-3 alone on cable one night in the 1990s or 2000s). P.S. I'm a huge fan of many types of cheese in many types of cuisine and a pretty casual coffee drinker (mostly to cut back on the amount of Coca-Cola my brain craves), so I'm afraid on that issue we must part ways, though!
They still have signs up in Wabasha saying this was filmed there. The train depot in the opening is 12 miles from my house. I definitely remember when they were filming this.
I think you should have a Steve Martin movie poll. If you do, please include "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" as it won't really fit in any other category aside from comedy. I would absolutely LOVE to see you react to this classic. Perhaps you could include "The Man with Two Brains" (another SM classic).
6:21 The funny thing is, this would be entirely in character for Ann-Margret herself; she’s known for being an avid motorcyclist, and was riding as late as 2000 (7 years after this movie, at the age of 59) when she was in an accident that broke her shoulder and some ribs.
Oh dear - Don't tell me they haven't seen "The Odd Couple" (1968) I always watch that one New Years Day. Been doing it since...these last 20 years or more
Loved your reaction. These 3 legends are cherished. Check out Ann Margaret when she was younger. She even dated Elvis. My dad met her in 68 in Toronto. He was her police escort. He said she radiated and glowed. Incredible woman. Happy American Thanksgiving ladies.
You guys should watch "The Odd Couple" from 1968 also starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, they made a ton of movies together, "The Odd Couple" is probably my favourite also when I first saw Grumpy Old Men I couldn't believe how gorgeous Ann Margaret STILL was!! She was the most beautiful actress in the world in the 60s!
Couldn't agree more. Sadly, they probably wouldn't even be able to show 70% of The Bad News Bears because the whole movie would be considered inappropriate for today's softies. LOL!
These two movies are the 6th and 7th times that Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau have appeared on-screen together. And they carry together like it's a family reunion, best friends getting back together. Even the ending outtakes are so much fun to watch.
Jack Lemmon and Water Matheau previously costarred in the move "The Odd Couple," in 1968. Now that you've watched them in this movie, you really should watch them in that earlier movie.
Finally you guys go into one of my all time favorites. Both Grumpy old men and Grumpier old men are some real real good movies. For me this is my number one Christmas movie I always see at Christmas time.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING 🦃🍽️🥧😊 This is a cute movie. Youll enjoy it very much RIP, Walter Mattheu and Jack Lemmon, for making this one of the funniest romantic comedy movies ever made.
Now that you have been introduced to these performers you should watch them in the prime of their careers. Ann-Margaret was Elvis's main squeeze for a while and starred with him in Viva Las Vegas. He saw her performance (especially her dancing) in Bye Bye Birdie and fell in love. Mathau and Lemon are in many movies together but I think the Odd Couple is their best. Lemon paired with Jamie Lee Curtis's Dad in a couple of great comedies, The Great Race and starred with Marilyn Monroe at the height of her career in Some Like it Hot. Watching any of those movies would be well worth your while.
You both MUST watch the sequel together. It's always hard to outdo the original but the sequel actually does in this case. Amazing cast and writing all around.
Ann Margaret is a great actress. And a very patriotic actress. She was involved in the USO. She went to Vietnam on tours for the USO. She would take time for the veterans when she could.
Movie was such a surprise hit in theaters and gained huge popularity on vhs and cable. Movies focused on older people is rare and even rarer they’re successful. This reminds me of my grandmother she loved it. And she never watched movies
Definitely 1000% check out The Apartment and The Odd Couple. The Apartment to see Jack Lemon outside of the dynamic duo that is Walter Matthau and himself, and then The Odd Couple for what I believe is their first on screen performance.
A classic! I loved this movie, it came out when I was a teenager, and it really made me appreciate my parents and grandparents. Its so funny, but also so sweet! I love John's little dance in his undies. One of the best scenes ever put on film!
Eh, turns out she knew at least 3 or 4 people in it, she just didn't know they were in it before they started watching! ;D She's seen the Apartment before, but maybe didn't recognize Jack Lemmon in this since it was made 30+ years later... She's seen Kevin Pollak in both Usual Suspects AND A Few Good Men at the very least... and she's seen Daryl Hannah in Splash and maybe other things. And as she said to Carly during the reaction, they both know Walter Matthau from at least the Dennis the Menace movie and Burgess Meredith (don't remember what she said from as it was during the opening credits... but he was in Rocky, so at least from that). Make that at LEAST 5 people from it! ;)
This movie was a pretty big deal here in Minnesota. I live about 45 minutes away from Wabasha, where this takes place and was filmed. Its actually the town where my grandpa spent his later years, where he would take us all out fishing on the Mighty Mississippi.
Movie giants here in their advanced years! You have to see Grumpier Old Men! Also see a couple older film with a very young Ann-Margaret (Bye Bye Birdie, Viva Las Vegas w/Elvis), Jack Lemmon in Days of Wine and Roses and Some Like it Hot.❤
Fun one, Ladies! The second movie is good too. Btw, Anne Margret was the bees knees back in the 60's, like on a par with Elvis. You might also enjoy a movie called Hopscotch, another great Walter Matthau light hearted comedy about spies. 🙂 Thanks for sharing this one!

Pretty much every Mathau Lemon movie is great, but The Odd Couple is a must... especially if you enjoy this. Neal Simon's writing was hilarious

When I first watched this film some 30 years ago I could imagine the grumpy men's lives - now I am older than the characters and can identify with them even more. Time really flies.

I do hope that you’ll react to their sequel Grumpier Old Men (1995), as well as other movies they made like Out To Sea (1997), and The Odd Couple II (1998).
A similar type movie with Lemon is "My Fellow Americans" with James Garner.
I'm glad you enjoyed this. I was their bodyguard for a special event in their honor in L.A.. Their friendship and appreciation for each other was very apparent. They made several buddy movies together and are all worth watching.
What an honor! I've always loved them both and hope they were great guys in real life.
Odd Couple is a top 10 movie all time.
I grew up on these movies. My grandparents watched them with us. I loved them all, so much nostalgia.
@@jimmyrun4eva885 I agree. I’ve never seen another buddy duo with as much chemistry as those two.
Literally everything with Matthau and Lemmon together or one or the other in it is worth watching. These guys were fabulous actors.
This movie has held a special place for me ever since I saw it as a kid, it's got such a heartwarming feel that's so hard to find in movies nowadays. Glad you guys enjoyed.
Yes. A million times yes. The sequel is also a must watch.
I HAVE BEEN TO HAWAII!!!!🤣🤣
@@hafeyawhich island? 😏 😎
I've heard they get grumpier
The sequal is a must. These 2 are 1 of the best comedy duos ever.
One of the few instances where the sequel was as good as the first one
In 1964, Ann Margaret visited my dad's ship (USS Ranger) with the USO. In 1999 when my dad was working for Burt Reynolds, she was staying at BR's house. My dad got to meet her, and she signed his Cruise Book.
The Apartment(1960) is one of Jack Lemmon's best. It also stars Shirley MacLaine, a true American treasure.
Have you read her book, "Out on a Limb"? Either it's extremely important to the world or she is delusional. I tend to think the former.
An absolute classic. It makes me sad to know that they're no longer with us. IRL, they were the best of friends and were buried next to each other.
The outtakes in this movie are probably funnier than 90% of the movies that come out nowadays. Burgess Meredith was epic!
Love both this and its sequel. Pure humor!
I can't remember the last recent film I saw that was ACTUALLY funny, it's been so damn long.
'You're going to eat lightning and crap thunder!, then mount all the women!
"Mounted" by a 90yo+ ♂ = OKAY in late 2023! YAY?
"Looks like Chuck's...." AND that's all I can say in a YT comment! 😎
@@billparrish4385 Italian sausage's in number TWO!
"Hopscotch" is another great Walter movie. Co-stars Glenda Jackson.
He was great in Charade. How he turns from friendly to villainous in a second
Matthau starred as Charley Varrick. A heist movie that went wrong. He was very good.
I personally feel that she still is a sex symbol, but that is me....
The woman in this movie is Ann Margaret. You can watch her in her younger years in "Bye, Bye Birdie," from the mid-1960s. I love that movie.
Walter Mathaue and Jack Lemmon were MASSIVE movie stars in their younger years. Just think of them as like our...Chris Pratt and Chris Hemsworth. Imagine when we're old trying to tell the young ones how great they were.
Oh, and please watch the sequel!!!
As was Ann Margret
The delivery of "did you mount her?" had me laughing harder than I can remember.
Also has Jay Fiedler who was the voice of Piglet from Winnie the Pooh for decades
@@donrichards271It does. 100%
@@donrichards271the play still packs it in today so the movie should hold up as well. Unlike most of the scripts that come out today, the writing in Odd Couple is timeless.
His little look and then him saying "friend" never ceases to pull on my heart strings.
Enjoy!!
*SOME LIKE IT HOT* (1959) and *THE APARTMENT* (1960). Two great films starring Jack Lemmon for CASSIE to enjoy. 😃
I'll second the Apartment.
Plus Some Like It Hot costars Jamie Lee Curtis's dad Tony Curtis..
“Nobody’s perfect.”
Mister Roberts has an excellent performance by Mr Lemmon as well.
On a little more serious note, Days of Wine and Roses. There, Jack got to work with Oscar Madison #2, Jack Klugman.
Jack Lemmon might be the greatest comic actor there ever was. I hope Cassie gets to his Billy Wilder collaborations someday, especially The Apartment.
_I'm_ hoping she gets to The Great Race. He's hilarious in his dual roles :)
@@SilentSooYun I remember Professor Fate popping the little kids balloon. Funny stuff.
I worked in a movie theater when this came out. I've seen the end and outtakes a million times and it NEVER gets old.
Matthou and Lemmon were so classic together over the years, that you almost feel like this is just a true friendship between them.
Gotta love Mick from the Rocky series. He's the funniest out of the three of them. Lol
Burgess Meredith 👍
When i see him I always think of the Penguin from Batman and his Twilight Zone episodes.
They also both acted in JFK, but obviously weren’t the leads nor had a scene together.
There was also Out To Sea and The Odd Couple 2.
Out To Sea is my favorite :)@@RandomNonsense1985
Both Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau were Oscar-winning actors, and dear friends in real life. Their chemistry is apparent in The Odd Couple, The Odd Couple II (made decades after the first one), Out To Sea, The Front Page, The Fortune Cookie, and Grumpier Old Men (which you need to see!!!). They also both appeared in Oliver Stone's JFK but did not share screen time in it.
Some great Movies with them on their own:
Lemmon - Mister Roberts (Best Supporting Actor Oscar), Tuesdays With Morrie, The Apartment (MUST SEE, Best Picture winner!!!), Some Like It Hot (with Marilyn Monroe), That's Life!, My Fellow Americans, The Out-Of-Towners, and Bell, Book, and Candle.
The TV show was not Jack and Walter. It was Tony Randall [Felix] and Jack Klugman [Oscar].
@@wagonmaster1974 Memory is a funny thing. As soon as I read your reply, I thought "of course". Amazing I got the TV show and the movie confused. Thanks.
Lol sa Gen x people saw this movie was a big hit
My friends and I are going to see Ann-Margaret do the Candlelight Processional at Epcot on Tuesday evening! So looking forward to it!
This one is a gem. Brings back memories of being with my grandma and grandpa as a boy. We watched this over and over. Grumpier Old Men is next!
This is a classic. Anything with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau is amazing.
They need to watch The Odd Couple from 1968 next! Absolutely hilarious with these two!!!!
@@scoots66 facts, and the 2nd one was funny too.
I was 41 when this came out and I loved it. At 71, I love it even more. Old guys are just young guys with bodies that are falling apart. LOL Ann Margaret was 52 when she did this film. The sequel has Ann Margaret and Sophia Loren.
Be sure to see and react to the second one, Grumpier Old Men. A new lady comes to town. . .for Max.
Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau were also in the classic 1968 film, The Odd Couple, which is a must watch. Same banter as this.
Just look at the two sisters' reactions when it comes from scenes of fun, love, and happiness . They're priceless. 😂😂😂
The sequel was one of my favourite movies as a kid. I would rewind and watch the bloopers over and over.
Who also lost.)
(This barely scratches the surface of my Lemmon recommendations. I mean, "The Apartment" is sheer brilliance.)
Walter Matthau had started playing villain roles, but he and Lemmon found wonderful comic chemistry in "The Fortune Cookie" (1966) and "The Odd Couple" (1968) and so they did a few more together, but didn't want to get pigeon-holed, but this was such a success that they filled up the rest of the 1990s pretty much joined at the hip.
Matthau also did serious work ("The Laughing Policeman", which is *not* a comedy, and the original "The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3" in 1974, opposite Robert Shaw, whom you remember from "Jaws") but because he was not conventionally handsome, he also played in films such as "Hello, Dolly" (with Barbara Streisand) and "Cactus Flower" [1971], with Ingrid Bergman (almost 30 years after "Casablanca") and Goldie Hawn, about 15 years before "Overboard",
(So glad you saw "Overboard". For a moment I was worried I would have to describe Goldie as "Kate Hudson's mother" and that made me die inside.)
Ariel is played by Ann-Margaret, who was the Gorgeous Female of the early 1960s.
[I am deliberately omiting the context, as I want Cassie unspoiled.])
Buck also wrote the exquisite 1971 comedy "Cold Turkey", which is NOT a Thanksgiving film.
Christopher MacDonald (Mike) was Shooter McGavin, but his classic role was in "Quiz Show" (1987)
Kevin Pollak (Jake) not only works well here and in "The Usual Suspects", but he's a very funny stand-up comedian who does perhaps the best impression of William Shatner ever.
Watched this and the sequel not too long ago...used to watch them with my grandfather when i was young, great movies!
One of my all time favorite comedies. Just outstanding
Oh dear - Don't tell me they haven't seen "The Odd Couple" (1968)
I always watch that one New Years Day. Been doing it since...these last 20 years or more
Love this movie. Hopefully you watch both of them.
Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau were in the original movie, The Odd Couple.
Loved your reaction. These 3 legends are cherished. Check out Ann Margaret when she was younger. She even dated Elvis. My dad met her in 68 in Toronto. He was her police escort. He said she radiated and glowed. Incredible woman. Happy American Thanksgiving ladies.
I thought that looked like Ann Margaret and had to look it up. Amazing.
The Bad News Bears (the original) and The Odd Couple. Go, now! Watch them! :) Great reaction! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
Couldn't agree more. Sadly, they probably wouldn't even be able to show 70% of The Bad News Bears because the whole movie would be considered inappropriate for today's softies. LOL!
Yes! Please, the both of you! React to the original Bad News Bears! CLASSIC
The Out-of-Towners (1970) with Jack Lemmon.
These two movies are the 6th and 7th times that Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau have appeared on-screen together. And they carry together like it's a family reunion, best friends getting back together. Even the ending outtakes are so much fun to watch.
Wonderful choice for a first time viewing. It counts as a Thanksgiving and Christmas movie.
Jack Lemmon and Water Matheau previously costarred in the move "The Odd Couple," in 1968. Now that you've watched them in this movie, you really should watch them in that earlier movie.
Matthau and Lemmon are a great duo. You should really check them out in "The Odd Couple" (1968).
Finally you guys go into one of my all time favorites. Both Grumpy old men and Grumpier old men are some real real good movies. For me this is my number one Christmas movie I always see at Christmas time.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING 🦃🍽️🥧😊
This is a cute movie.
Youll enjoy it very much
RIP, Walter Mattheu and Jack Lemmon, for making this one of the funniest romantic comedy movies ever made.
Jack Lemmon in The Great Race. One of my faves.
The sequel is just as good. This pair has classic chemistry.
This duo started with the Odd Couple, which is one of the greatest buddy comedies ever. Well worth a watch!
This is such a classic! You gotta check out the sequel as well.
Just watched "Planes, Tranes and Automobiles" with the family earlier. A great Thanksgiving movie. Now looking forward to this!
Ann Margaret is a great actress. And a very patriotic actress. She was involved in the USO. She went to Vietnam on tours for the USO. She would take time for the veterans when she could.
Great reaction! I forgot how much I loved this movie! 😂 Now, you 2 *have to* watch the second one, "Grumpier Old Men"!!! You'll love that one, too. 👍❤
Movie was such a surprise hit in theaters and gained huge popularity on vhs and cable.
Movies focused on older people is rare and even rarer they’re successful. This reminds me of my grandmother she loved it. And she never watched movies
Gonna be good. It’s a great film! Happy thanksgiving 🦃🍁🍽 to ALL!!! 😊
Definitely 1000% check out The Apartment and The Odd Couple. The Apartment to see Jack Lemon outside of the dynamic duo that is Walter Matthau and himself, and then The Odd Couple for what I believe is their first on screen performance.
No, Lemmon and Matthau had done "The Fortune Cookie" for Billy Wilder.
It's always nice to see the sisters reacting to a romance, rather than war or horror films😊
A classic! I loved this movie, it came out when I was a teenager, and it really made me appreciate my parents and grandparents. Its so funny, but also so sweet! I love John's little dance in his undies. One of the best scenes ever put on film!
Cassie: "I don't know one single person in it."
Me: "Damn... I'm old."
Eh, turns out she knew at least 3 or 4 people in it, she just didn't know they were in it before they started watching! ;D
She's seen the Apartment before, but maybe didn't recognize Jack Lemmon in this since it was made 30+ years later...
So happy you are watching this movie! It is so heartwarming!
THIS is the Hollywood that I fell in love with. The actors.. the movies... such a beautiful era. I hope you watch the sequel.
