From an article back in May from The Guardian: "In recent years, PG&E equipment set off 31 wildfires that wiped away entire towns and killed 113 people." PG&E has been subjecting American citizens to hazardous chemicals and faulty equipment that starts deadly wildfires for decades. Pelican Brief is probably one of my favorite movies growing up. Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington. It should DEF be in the lineup this week. Its not a court room movie, but it really checks that witness box.
I remember the little hairs on the back of my neck standing up as I walked out of the theatre. I knew then and there Julia would win the Oscar for this, and she did.
The Pelican Brief is another really good Julia Roberts movie. It’s a sort of law/drama/suspense movie. Also Sleeping with the Enemy, that’s a drama/suspense. Both of those are really good if you would like the check them out.
The only thing that annoys me about The Pelican Brief is that in the book the male and female leads got involved sexually. The movie cast Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts... and then suddenly that subplot evaporated. Can't have a throwaway romantic scene if the leads are a black man and a white woman. Really left a bad taste in my mouth.
@@zammmerjammer Well, you have to blame Washington for that. He was the one that had it taken out. In a 2002 Newsweek profile of Washington for which Roberts was also interviewed, she said that she'd been asked numerous times why she didn't want to kiss Washington in "The Pelican Brief." She explained, "Don't I have a pulse? Of course I wanted to kiss Denzel. It was his idea to take the ... scenes out." In the same piece, Washington explained that he didn't want to alienate his predominantly Black female fanbase by showing a Black man being intimate with a white woman rather than a Black woman. "Black women are not often seen as objects of desire on film," Washington said. "They have always been my core audience." From a Looper article BY NATASHA LAVENDER/JULY 9, 2021
@@TheToledoTrumpton Yeah, I still don't like it. They didn't have to show some hot & heavy sex scene -- it could have been tastefully done. But I have heard that Denzel Washington doesn't want to do sex scenes for whatever reason. Which is funny because he has quite the reputation for spreading it around offscreen...
Julia Roberts won a well deserved Oscar for this! Also the real Erin Brockovich made a cameo appearance in this as the waitress at the beginning of the film who served them.
This is role, and performance, that won Julia Roberts her Oscar. She deserved it, too. Albert Finney, who played Ed, is actually British and has been acting since the early 1960s. He was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in this (also well deserved). Peter Coyote, who played Kurt Potter (the lawyer who took over the case) does very little acting any more because he's making buckets o' money doing voice-over work. He's narrated many of Ken Burns' documentaries, among others.
@@alankingsley2916 She did get robbed. Ellen Burstyn gave one of the best performances in the history of film. Just not enough people saw it and Requiem for a Dream was too pessimistic and dark for the Academy.
Ehh.... debatable. Ellen Burstyn's Requiem for a Dream or Michelle Yeoh's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon feel more worthy of a win Actually why hasn't Cassie react to those films, yet? Love to see her opinion after. Although, she might need to prepare herself for Requiem....
She was also very impressive in August, Osage County in which went head to head with Meryl Streep, and more than held her own . . . Her acting chops are up there with the very best . .
Ehh.... debatable. I thought Ellen Burstyn (Requiem for a Dream) or Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) should have won. Actually, the fact that Michelle didn't get nominated is quite shocking. Would love to see Cassie react to those films though and give her opinion. Although, she might need to prepare herself for Requiem....
The score by Thomas Newman is excellent as well. I'm a sucker for piano-heavy scores and that's kinda Newman's thing. American Beauty, The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption, Road to Perdition, Meet Joe Black, Cinderella Man, etc., etc. All movies that were enhanced by Newman's accompanying music.
My father had a stroke last week and the prognosis is not looking hopeful - watching you both experience this wonderful movie has put a smile on my face and allowed me to temporarily escape my situation. Thank you, you'll never know how valuable that is to me :)
Paul Newman's The Verdict is excellent. And The Paper Chase, although not exactly a courtroom drama (actually a law school drama) is a must see for John Houseman's performance.
This movie came out in 1998 and is based on events that occurred in 1993. The real Ed Masry passed away in 2005 and Albert Finney the actor passed away in 2019. Before this movie Finney was most famous for playing Daddy Warbucks in the movie version of Annie. The real Erin still can be seen occasionally in advertisements for class action lawsuits for various lawfirms. She is also still an active environmental activist and is currently focused on the train derailment/chemical spill fallout in East Palestine, Ohio.
This movie is one of those "remote-droppers" for both my wife and I. We love both Julia Roberts and Albert Finney in it (he was an AMAZING actor and I hope you see some of his older work, like Tom Jones or Looker) and the story unfolds so magnetically you just can't pull away until he gives her THE CHECK. 10/10, perfect movie.
It wouldn't have been apparent from his performance but Albert Finney, who played Ed Masry, was British through and through. He played American characters several times and obviously knew how. Other films of his worth watching would include "Murder On The Orient Express", " The Dresser", " Miller's Crossing", "Big Fish", and "Before The Devil Knows You're Dead". ( Not to mention a personal favorite "Scrooge" from 1970 ). It didn't come up in this reaction, but you have already seen him in "Skyfall" - his last film - as the caretaker of the Bond estate.
For me this is the best performance of Julia Roberts career. Absolutely spellbinding. 10/10 performance full of character, charisma, and dynamism. Julia Roberts was in her Lebron 2012 / Jordan 96 element during filming I’m sure!!
There are several scenes in this film where Erin lists off a lot of detailed information right off the top of her head; medical histories, personal stories, phone numbers, etc. This is very impressive, but it was also a necessity. Erin is dyslexic, and so it was easier for her to memorize everything rather than constantly going back and rereading all of that info.
The amount of emotions you two go through watching these movies is so refreshing and charmingly wonderful to share. I just want to give you both a GIANT hug!
Cher's & Meryl Streep's 1983 movie Silkwood, is as dramatically eye-opening as this film as is the 1982 TV movie Lois Gibbs and the Love Canal all three true stories that deal with accountability and Oversight and whistle blowers that revealed the truth.
This is one of my favorite films. The story, pacing, direction, casting, cinematography, and soundtrack are all top notch. It was also the film that made me appreciate Julia Roberts as an actress.

Saw this went it came out and loved it. A couple years ago, I sat down and decided to see Erin Brockovich in Spanish. The actress who dubbed Julia Roberts was amazing. You could hear it in her voice she was having a great time. The cussing was cleaned up, but even in Spanish the words coming out of Julia Roberts mouth must've been shocking and so funny to say in Spanish. I just laughed and laughed and laughed. So I decided to show my parents the movie. God, I wish I'd had recorded their reaction. Seeing their eyes grow as big as saucers and laughing at what was coming out of her mouth. Priceless. It's a memory I cherish, seeing my parents having a good time.
This was a great year for the director Steven Soderbergh. He was nominated for best director Oscars for both Erin Brockovich and Traffic in 2000. Traffic (a fantastic movie about the so called "war on drugs") winning him the best director award.
Julia Roberts and Albert Finney were fantastic in this film. I'm glad that they merely kept Erin and Ed as friends, rather than having them gratuitously hook up, since Ed is already married. Not every movie needs a love story between the leads.
Hands down my favorite performance of Julia Roberts. Her chemistry with Albert Finney is so magical. I also like that it is very different from other courtroom dramas, as it follows more of the behind the scenes, investigative aspect as opposed to the actual courtroom.
You really can't miss with Steven Soderbergh. The dude can make damn near any kind of film. His filmography is one of the most eclectic of any filmmaker from the past 30 years.
Erin Brockovich is a renowned Consumer Advocate and Environmental Activist who rights wrongs every day on multiple fronts. If you or someone you love have suffered because of an environmental contaminant, medical device, or a pharmaceutical, or because of something or someone else,
Erin is a true American. Harpers on about 'how dare you fire a mother with three children' and 'helping people is the right thing to do' but also willing to frustrate it for a raise and benefits.
Sandra Bullock was tagged as the "Next Julia Roberts" early in her career in the 90's. Not many people knew she's actually 4 years older than Julia (59 to 55), though. Was surprised when I learned it. Both still beautiful.
BTW, in 2018 PG&E Pleaded Guilty On 2018 California Camp Fire on 84 separate counts of involuntary manslaughter and one felony count of unlawfully starting a fire in a case stemming from a horrific 2018 blaze that destroyed much of the town of Paradise in Northern California. Awarded in determination notices is $18.11 billion!
Hey y'all! This is one of Julia's best roles, she was great in it. She btw is from Georgia, like myself. 😊 Everyone in this was awesome in their roles. And FYI- that was the real Ed Masery who played the Judge. Not that I've met her but Erin B. has come here twice to Savannah, once she was giving a speech about her job and I think the 2nd was yrs later working on a case. But yeah so glad they nailed that company to the wall long ago. 🎉 Was fun watching your reactions. P.s.- The actor who played Ed, also played the character of- Kincaid, the old Gamekeeper to the Bond family in Skyfall. 😁🏰🇬🇧
the real Ed Masery (RIP)was actually the older gentleman sitting behind Julia Roberts in the diner and was not the judge. but the waitress in the diner was the real Erin Brockovich just to let u know. Albert Finny is a G in the world of acting
Kind of shocked that "THE VERDICT" with Paul Newman didn't win a bunch of polls... You'll ADORE it and it's one of Paul Newman's finest performances... LOVE a great law dramas. Erin Brockovich is more investigative, but brilliant, nonetheless. Some other great courtroom dramas: "WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION," "AND JUSTICE FOR ALL," and "ABSENCE OF MALICE" (another epic Paul Newman film)...
Masterpiece. The writing is airtight, witty, and intelligent. Acting and directing are top notch. Steven Soderbergh did a great job emulating Los Angeles heat.
Two of my other favorite legal movies are Julia Roberts in The Pelican Brief and John Cusack in Runaway Jury. So good. Thank you for a wonderful reaction!
Fantastic reaction to an incredible story. Wonderful cast. So love Albert Finney who played Ed. A real presence in any role he played or movie he was in. God rest his soul!
Another great movie, also about environmental law, is A Civil Action. John Travolta plays a successful lawyer who is too slick for his own good, but he finds himself deeply involved in a town that has been poisoned. It too is based on a true story and is one of Travolta's best movies. It also has a solid supporting cast, including the ubiquitous Robert Duvall.
Albert Finney who play Erin’s boss Ed passed away in 2019. He was an actor for 4 decades. R.I.P. Albert Erin Brockovich is a true story. Julia Roberts won the Oscar for her portrayal as best lead actress. A much deserved Oscar. I adore Julia Roberts. ❤❤❤❤❤

It's funny how the way things affect you change as you get older. There are loads of emotional moments in this movie, but one that hits harder than it did when I was younger was Erin's son looking at the one document and saying to her "This girl is the same age as me." 😭
The fear in her voice when the CSI lady says to her children "get out of the pool!" Has stucked in my heart since the first time, as Casey said, it's chilling. A wild Old Troy Sivan appearing right after really pulled my up from that sinking feeling.
@@clevelandcbi lol, HOW did I forgot when it is my own name! I guess in my mind I spell it "Carley" (and thus mixed it up with Casey) to differentiate it from "Carli", wich is the same, but in my mind it has my own, Spanish speaking accent and thus not the same name. Interesting, thank you.
Too few people saw the similar 2019 legal thriller Dark Waters. It’s another true story (about Teflon and forever chemicals like PFOA) and has an unbelievably stacked cast. Absolutely a must see.
I just recently went on a bit of a binge of legal thrillers dealing with big corporations poisoning the public. Dark Waters (true story), A Civil Action (true story), and Michael Clayton (fictional but certainly inspired by various legal cases where big corporations knowingly put public safety at risk - Ford because of the Ford Pinto and Monsanto who makes Roundup and other "agrochemicals"). Dark Waters would probably be at the bottom of my list between those three which is surprising to me since I really like Mark Ruffalo. It's certainly still a good movie that I'm glad I watched but I was slightly disappointed with it. I may have had my expectations set too high.
It’s interesting …Taken 3 is on Cassie’s Letterboxd list, but I didn’t see the first two on there. I double checked. It would be odd for her to have seen the third but not the first and second. Maybe she has seen them outside the channel but overlooked putting them on her Letterboxd list.
Albert Finney...what a legend and an amazing actor! Looks like a different person in every role he is. I love Julia, but I always see Julia no matter the character she is playing (and don't get me wrong, she is great, but seems like playing different versions of herself. Her charming and charysma are on top though).
Perhaps the greatest courtroom dramas is THE VERDICT, directed by Sidney Lumet who also directed TWELVE ANGRY MEN. It stars Paul Newman and was written by David Mamet who wrote THE UNTOUCHABLES. I can’t recommend it highly enough for you. It is gripping, moving, thought provoking and a brilliant examination of a soul in peril
Saw "The Verdict" as a kid in the theaters with my mom. Can't remember what it was about, but the one thing I do remember about it was Paul Newman smoking a cigarette while drinking a glass of beer. I remember that because he did it in a different way than anyone else. He sucked on the cigarette, but didn't exhale the smoke right away, instead he took a big gulp of beer first, swallowed and then, only then exhaled the smoke. It was the coolest thing I ever saw and years later in college when I started smoking, I used to do that as a party trick to impress my friends. Fortunately, I've quit smoking 9 years ago. So I no longer do that.
Great movie. Back in the 90s my friend was nanny for Eric Roberts' children. Eric is Julia's brother. She always said Julia was a very nice and kind person.

This one is a classic and I really love how you two get into the story. Another Julia Roberts classic with Denzel Washington is "The Pelican Brief". If you haven't see it you really should.
My mother loved Julia Roberts. I wanted her to be able to see this movie before she passed. Unfortunately, it was still in theaters and not available on tape until it was too late.
The story of Erin is very good and it is not covered totally in the movie (as you can't get everything in there). She actually got really sick while doing the research for the case. She is bad ass!! And Julia is as well :) Knew you would love this, both of you.
I love this movie so much. And i love that Julia Roberts won the Oscar for it. She is in every scene, she carries the film and she is charismatic, strong, emotional and a fascinating screen presence.

Liked the book, loved the movie.
Full range of emotions from her and Denzel was a perfect counterbalance.
Stanley Tucci is great too.
Pelican brief is a great movie!!
What a great suggestion!!!!
I remember the little hairs on the back of my neck standing up as I walked out of the theatre. I knew then and there Julia would win the Oscar for this, and she did.
Great reaction! You know, the real Erin Brokovich is still around and working. She was on all the news networks about the Ohio train derailment.
Being a deranged media pundit isn’t really work
yeah it was great seeing her come out and show solidarity
She plays the waitress in the diner.
@@tremorsfan that too
She was here at Camp Lejuene just a few months ago, for the poisoned groundwater on base.
I think Stepmom would be perfect for the channel if you haven't seen it. Susan Sarandon is great in it as well. And the kids are fantastic.
Please watch this!
Or maybe not...just watched some clips of it...and geez it's sad. That ending is brutal.
yes, please! it’s a great movie
The Pelican Brief is another really good Julia Roberts movie. It’s a sort of law/drama/suspense movie. Also Sleeping with the Enemy, that’s a drama/suspense. Both of those are really good if you would like the check them out.
Pelican Brief, Pelican Brief, Pelican Brief! 🎉 💼
Yes!!!
It was his idea to take the ... scenes out."
In the same piece, Washington explained that he didn't want to alienate his predominantly Black female fanbase by showing a Black man being intimate with a white woman rather than a Black woman. "Black women are not often seen as objects of desire on film," Washington said. "They have always been my core audience."
From a Looper article BY NATASHA LAVENDER/JULY 9, 2021
@@TheToledoTrumpton Yeah, I still don't like it. They didn't have to show some hot & heavy sex scene -- it could have been tastefully done.
But I have heard that Denzel Washington doesn't want to do sex scenes for whatever reason. Which is funny because he has quite the reputation for spreading it around offscreen...
Julia Roberts won a well deserved Oscar for this! Also the real Erin Brockovich made a cameo appearance in this as the waitress at the beginning of the film who served them.
I love Albert Finney in this as the lawyer. All the scenes between him and Julia are fantastic.
I always felt Ellen Burstyn got robbed that year for her performance in Requiem for a Dream, but no doubt this is one of Julia’s best.
Peter Coyote is a longtime activist and a Buddhist priest.
@@alankingsley2916 She did get robbed. Ellen Burstyn gave one of the best performances in the history of film. Just not enough people saw it and Requiem for a Dream was too pessimistic and dark for the Academy.
Ehh.... debatable.
Ellen Burstyn's Requiem for a Dream or Michelle Yeoh's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon feel more worthy of a win
Actually why hasn't Cassie react to those films, yet? Love to see her opinion after. Although, she might need to prepare herself for Requiem....
@@osmanyousif7849 Don’t we all 🫣
Great, Cassie. Great reaction. This is truly Julia Roberts' best performance. She makes the film.
She was also very impressive in August, Osage County in which went head to head with Meryl Streep, and more than held her own . . . Her acting chops are up there with the very best . .
@@ochjim - Yes and she's also good in Closer and My Best Friend's Wedding and Ocean's Eleven
Julia Roberts Academy Award winning role. Love it !
Ehh....
Love this film so much. Julia Roberts fully deserved her Oscar. I love the scene where she offers the defence lawyers the glass of water 🤣
This is one of those films I watch whenever it's on tv. So we'll written and acted.
Soderbergh films have that effect on people haha
Agree! It's one of my comfort films lol
Yeah this was on cable a ton. Feel like I've seen it fifty times.
See it without commercials. It's worth it.
❤
A month late but wishing you and your family the best. Take care of yourself, too.
I forgot how good - and emotional - this movie is. Thank you for your excellent reaction
That's a great way to describe it. You can't click past this movie.
I so love this movie! It’s very engaging, and Julia Roberts shines in her role as a tough-as-nails investigator.
Erin Brockovich is a friggin juggernaut.
Albert Finney was a brilliant actor..The Dresser..is great example of his work..RIP..Albert..
Did he pass recently?
@@ct6852 2019.
Two others you might like are Norma Rae with Sally Field (1979) and Silkwood with Meryl Streep, Cher, and Kurt Russell (1983).
Norma Rae is SUCH a good film. Sally Field gave some stellar performances in the 70s.
Silkwood is one of my favorites. Cher does a good job, but my favorite Cher movie is "Mask"...phenom preformance!
And The China Syndrome with Jack Lemmon.
@@morningcoffeebreak7367 Mask is in my top ten movies of all time. Especially the version with the Bob Seger songs. I think the non director cut. But either one is stellar.
@@thomast8539 good recommendation.
I don’t know how you do this time after time, Cassie and Carly and crew, but here I am seeing just snippets of this movie and your reactions and crying my eyes out at what a great movie it is. 😭🙌🏼 Keep up the amazing work!
This is a true story the real Erin Brockovich played the waitress in the beginning when she took the kids out to eat, and she didn’t eat !
Also I love how Julia Roberts for her props for this movie, she definitely deserve that little gold man! Glad she got her Oscar
The Verdict with Paul Newman is really good.
The Pelican Brief with Julia and Denzel will blow your socks off.
"Witness for the Prosecution". One of the all time best court room dramas! You won't be disappointed.
One of my favorite court room dramas is
Runaway jury.
Erin Brockovich is in the movie, she’s the blonde waitress at 5’25.
Thank you Cassie and Carly, i love this film.
And Erin is still fighting for other causes to this very day . God bless her and keep her.
He was my favorite Scrooge.
@@laurakali6522He’s my fave Daddy Warbucks
Plus. It's based on real events, and supposedly very accurate. I'm guessing a love story wasn't spawned in real life either.
Out of Sight, Oceans 11, The Limey, Traffic and this are his best in my opinion. The Limey is criminally underrated.
He has some interesting independent films, too.
Who doesn‘t love Magic Mike XXL 😆
I forgot about Out of Sight. Can't recommend Traffic enough.
Saw a Scream/Out of Sight double feature back then. Was not expecting to like it as much as I did. Soderbergh has a special touch.
Erin Brockovich is a renowned Consumer Advocate and Environmental Activist who rights wrongs every day on multiple fronts. If you or someone you love have suffered because of an environmental contaminant, medical device, or a pharmaceutical, or because of something or someone else,
"Inherit the Wind" (1960)...also based on a true story, and my favorite courtroom movie...with Spencer Tracy, Fredric March, and Gene Kelly.
The real Erin Brockovich is the waitress in the early scene where she takes the kids to the restaurant to eat. Here name in the movie is..... Julia!
Bit of movie trivia. Albert Finney who plays ED, also played Hercule Poirot in the 1974 movie Murder on the Orient Express.
Very good actor
Also in so many of his movies did a very good southern accent
Completely forgot about Runaway Jury, thanks for reminding me. Runaway Jury and The Pelican Brief are great movies.
My personal favorite is The Client.
This movie is amazing. Erin was still a massive advocate for justice after this settlement.
I always forget how much this movie makes me cry.
Another great Aaron Eckhart film is *Thank You For Smoking.* A great alien/action film is *Battle Los Angeles.*
Julia won a well deserved Oscar for this.
I love this movie, I've seen it about 10 times, and always bring tears to my eyes with the outcome, brilliant.
Albert Finney who play Erin’s boss Ed passed away in 2019. He was an actor for 4 decades. R.I.P. Albert
Erin Brockovich is a true story. Julia Roberts won the Oscar for her portrayal as best lead actress. A much deserved Oscar. I adore Julia Roberts. ❤❤❤❤❤
omg finally a good reactor does this movie. So underrated, this movie makes me feel so nostalgic for the 2000s.
Much beloved film and story. So, no, not underrated. Heh.
makes me sad too thinking of all the towns still dealing with this shit out here in the west
@@Nick_CF It's a real shame death penalty or something like that is not given to the execs who pass these decisions that kill and maim thousands of people.
Pretty fucked how the world is still
It's funny how the way things affect you change as you get older.
*Carly, almost same as you😀. And it's definitely chilling
Can't believe Taken hasn't been suggested as a must watch movie series.
It’s interesting …Taken 3 is on Cassie’s Letterboxd list, but I didn’t see the first two on there. I double checked. It would be odd for her to have seen the third but not the first and second. Maybe she has seen them outside the channel but overlooked putting them on her Letterboxd list.
This is still my most favorite justice movie ever. Thanks for "making me" rewatch it for the nth time. 😄👍
Albert Finney was perfect in this movie !!
perfect casting !!😊
Albert Finney...what a legend and an amazing actor! Looks like a different person in every role he is. I love Julia, but I always see Julia no matter the character she is playing (and don't get me wrong, she is great, but seems like playing different versions of herself. Her charming and charysma are on top though).
The Rainmaker and A Time To Kill are two of the best courtroom movies ever made. It would be great to see you react to them.
Man the closing arguments in. "A Time to Kill' is such a good scene
Julia playing Erin was pure genius. And Erin was such a savage. Just these ladies!!
They show that in a lot of classes. I definitely saw it in school. Great Paul Newman performance.
@@johnlloyddy7016 He definitely had an edge. A major part of the story was him trying to avoid his addictions and fight his own cynicism.
Great movie. Back in the 90s my friend was nanny for Eric Roberts' children. Eric is Julia's brother. She always said Julia was a very nice and kind person.
They didn't recognise Albert Finney from Skyfall. A very versatile actor. If you want to see him in young and dashing mode, watch Tom Jones (1963).
One of my favorite movies ever. Its definitely a feel good ending to know it was a true story. Real life doesnt always pan out like that but when u have a hero like Erin that makes sure it does...❤
Yay!!!! I'm so glad you two got to see this, I knew it would hit all the marks, and I *thought* you may get fired up and boy was I not disappointed. Lol. Love this reaction!!!

This would make a great double feature with The Insider with Russell Crowe and Al Pacino about a tobacco company insider testifying against his company with the show 60 Minutes and the company's attempts to shut him up. Great thriller with a similar (but darker) vibe
It is too edgy
Cassie/Carly - the waitress at the beginning of the movie is the real Erin Brockovich

i remember seeing this movie before i really understood ANY of it. i’m not and will never be a mother. but i had a really, really good one. and was definitely raised with a sense of right and wrong. and everything in this film makes me emotional every time i see it because it just makes SO much sense to me because of how i was raised. love the rxn!
Need to watch the movie "pelican Brief" with Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington. Excellent and intriguing
Never really been that much of a fan with Julia Roberts over the years... but she was OUTSTANDING in this role. It really felt like one of those "life time roles" for an actor/actress, that was basically tailor made for them to do.
RIP. Am sure you miss her. ❤
