Thanks for your video. Just one remark: Clip Studio is not so much a rebranding of Manga Studio. The CSP name was already used in Japan, but the software was distributed in the USA and europe as Manga Studio. So it is basically the same software, just now under a unified name.
Seriously?! That's hilarious that they distributed it to us as Manga Studio, I think they might have over-niched themselves, glad they unified it then. Thanks for clarifying
yes, clip studio is way more intuitive, its UI is more artist friendly, photoshop its like a driving a big truck, and so expensive, i bought csp a few years ago and is the best choice i took also gets better each update, beautiful work you are a pro, your style reminds me Winsor McCays work
CSP is so damn cheap for that it gives you, it's unbelievable. My only problem is that the launcher and shop is really, really slow. I'm not sure what the problem is, maybe the servers are stationed in Japan or whatever lol but god, it's awful. Brush sites load 5-10 seconds sometimes but I prefer it a lot over photoshop
I've switched to using Affinity Photo with Clip Studio paint and that has been an amazing combination! No more subscription and all of the tools I need. Thanks for the awesome video!
@@jenninexus yes the grease pencil ... its good for scribbles and roughs because it has an infinite canvas sort of and all your drawings can be sculpted , so you get very dynamic poses pretty fast and easy
Photoshop have stabilization by default . They introduced this feature when they swapped to the subscription model i think . It's less advanced than the one you find in clip studio paint but it's there . There is also lazy mezumi available that give you even more option than clip studio . But other than that i agree with you . Photoshop it's not designed for digital painting . It's mainly designed for photo-editing / manipulation but it's so powerful that can do pretty much everything . They also added the wet-brush tool that will help you to simulate oils and watercolors they added also some natural media brushes that work great . I use mainly Corel Painter as my main painting software and i love it but if needed i switch to photoshop for some editing and to use some filter . I used clip studio a lot when i tried to do some comics and i still use it often and it's great . The thing i love the most is that it's very stable and light weight and it have a lot of features specific for illustrator and comic artists . the only thing i don't like a lot with clip studio is that the standard brushes are not great and it lack liquify but other than that for illustration is better than photoshop from different point of view . Great video btw ! You should try krita too . I think you will love it and it's totally free . Keep up the good work😎
Yes! They did introduce it when they launched the subscription service and it’s not as good as CSP’s. I mentioned Lazy Nezumi in my video because it’s a popular add-on. That’s funny that you switch softwares depending on what you need to do and I think that’s the smartest way to go for sure. That was the point of my video--to dispel the idea that Photoshop is the one-all program for art, there are so many better options for specific art things you need to do and I hope artists consider CSP as an option if they haven’t already. I like Krita! It’s awesome that it’s free--I haven’t explored it too much so I’m not really familiar with all of its features but I like it. I agree with you too--CSP is lightweight and stable, I should’ve mentioned that in the video darn it! I think CSP has crashed on me maybe 2 times in the years I’ve used it and it doesn’t slow down my computer. What an excellent point. Thank you for sharing :)
Great video. Affinity Photo and Designer is a good Photoshop alternative for photos and design stuff. Affinity and Clip Paint also have way better iPad apps than Adobe. For such a large company they shouldn't be as far behind as they are. That integration between iPad and my desktop is one of the many reasons I stopped using Adobe.
I’ve never heard of Affinity (but then again I don’t really do photography work), is it as inexpensive as Clip Studio? I know that ipad-desktop integration with Clip Studio is pretty seamless (although obviously it’s going to be a bit more limited than the full desktop version), but the required subscription kills me. I use Procreate instead for the iPad and I love it. And that’s SO TRUE--Adobe’s apps are really subpar compared to other similar apps, considering it’s such a big company and their products are industry-leading. I’ve always wondered why that is
@@JGVIllustrations The desktop version is $50 and the iPad version is $20. Affinity Designer is for raster and vector art. They too will have great discounts and drop the price 50-60%. I like that a lot of these programs are competing with Adobe. It makes Adobe better in the long run to have competition and it's better for my wallet.
Layer color toggle is a great option to have... you change the default color on the button btw (I have mine set to a pinkish red), can also recolor on the fly, really useful for working with multiple layers at the same that you need to distinguish ❤️ clip studio
Adobe is notorious for making making your current software that you have with them obsolete and then they have the nerve to tell you to pay A LOT of money for their new version. No discounts, no nothing for purchasing it.
@@JGVIllustrations adobe does 3D artists worse. They basically bought Substance Painter and rebranded it as Adobe Substance Painter. Nothing new, just a community slider and thats all.
I'm so poor I never got into Photoshop. Just moved from Krita to Clip Studio Paint and really loving it. Although Krita is amazing for a free software.
aditya thakur yes Krita is awesome for being a free software! Glad you’ve moved to Clip Studio Paint, if you don’t have the EX version they’re having a sale right now through the weekend you might want to check out! www.clipstudio.net/en/ 👍
I have never used any digital art software. I've always used old school art supplies. But I'm working on a massive graphic novel and I think digital coloring is the way to go. So I've been doing research in to what hardware and software I need to buy.... I've got a really good job so money isn't the issue. Just easy of use and quality. This is the first video of yours that I've seen and you immediately got a subscriber 👍👍👍👍 You're beautiful and you speak clearly with a great voice.
Hi Irrel! How is your graphic novel going? I’m just seeing this old comment! If it’s going to be a big graphic novel, I do recommend going digital and upgrading to Clip Studio Paint EX so you can access multiple-page comic-making features. I know the program can be a little complicated at first but just take it slow and really learn the features, I genuinely recommend it for comic-making. Thank you so much for watching ❤️
This is the first of your videos that I've I have watched and I have already decided that I will likely watch them all. I don't even draw! Lol. You edited this so well and it is very humourous! I just noticed the calming music in the background.
Jocelyn!! Thank you hahaha I’m still improving A LOT with every new video, so I really appreciate that you still found it interesting. Calming is definitely one of the vibes I aim in my channel
I love the way you express your impression to make Clip Studio Paint as an artist choice whilst saying Photoshop as an enterprise tool. It gives us more insight in the product. Great job!
Very helpful, i've been working with a really old photoshop version because i refuse to pay for a subscription, and i've been wanting to upgrade to something else
The Dec 10 2020 update gave us the ability to use PS brushes now! Just drag the PS brushes from your folders to the brush tab/sidebar and you're good :)
5:51 You should have started with this, like, DAMN, you have no idea how many drawings I wish I could have changed with that feature. Now I'm definitely going to try it out. Thank you
Photoshop does have this feature. As much as I enjoyed her nicely presented video and lovely artwork, it's obvious that she was not familiar with Photoshop's many amazing tools and features, so she did miss completely, that there is a simple way to make lines thinner or thicker. Clip Studio Paint IS a great price and I'm not knocking it, but many of the things that she states Photoshop can't do, are simply because she is not familiar enough with it.
(transitioning from traditional mediums to digital art) This was the information I needed to finally decide on a program to learn on, thank you. Not too short or drawn out, and my kind of humor as well. Instant sub :D
Thank you! I know right? Sometimes these types of videos take forever to get to the point, I’m glad you think so and that you found this helpful. If you ever have questions about CSP or digital art in general, shoot me a comment on my videos and I’d be happy to help. Good luck on your transition--just be patient on learning all of the controls and start simple with a few brushes and opacity controls :)
i just switched to CSP cause now they have a monthly subscription of $4.45 a month (which i can handle compared to adobe and their heavy software) + free three months for first time use! and i find it great is cause i can use CSP paying cheap and once a sale shows up and i have saved up i’ll be able to buy the actual thing
Same! I haven’t tried it yet and I have a whole brush pack from Grut Brushes to try to import. I’d like to see soon if they are able to be imported at CSP claims 🤔
I’ve considered it BUT CSP just launched a subscription model, which really sucks--it was the entire reason why I moved away from Photoshop and learned how to use CSP. So, I don’t know. At this point, CSP has removed a big reason it was favorable over Photoshop. Don’t get me wrong, CSP still has some nicer illustration features over PHotoshop but I feel too salty with their stupid subscription model right now to want to make another video favoring them lmao
@@JGVIllustrations What is the big fuss over the new subscription plan? The desktop software is still a one time purchase. Stability/bug fix updates are still FREE. The $10 a year Update Pass just means you get the updates when new features come out. Everyone can afford that. And I feel 90% confident that CSP users aren't just sitting around yearning for new CSP features
I have tried Krita and it’s a lovely free art software. CSP is still far superior with it’s many features for drawing and its online database of resources (both mentioned in my video). Krita is pretty simple--it’s still great if you are just starting to use digital art and you’re on a tight budget. I also like Krita’s simple interface, but it simply doesn’t have anywhere near the features CSP has, and that’s okay :) Thank you so much for watching!
I agree Clip Studio is a wonderful tool for artists which I have watched get better since I originally bought Manga 4. I am sure they will enhance the typography element in future releases and then photoshop will really need to watch out.
Yes! You made the right choice, not just for your wallet but CSP really is a great digital art software. No regrets!! My next video will be a beginner’s tutorial, hopefully you’re subscribed to my channel with the bell button on so you’ll get notified when I post it!
I have Clip Studio but I use Paint tool Sai more lol because I just mainly draw and I like simple interfaces XD. But Clip studio is very powerful, especially if you need to draw backgrounds, the assets are amazing, the rulers are great.
So much yes! Subscription for a software is scummy imo. It's a tool, should be a product, not a service. I did get Clip Studio with my tablet and really liked it and also use Krita which has some more PS like features and it's free ^^
Yes! I completely agree, that's a great way of putting it. I haven't used CSP on a tablet, I use Procreate but I'm glad you like it! I always recommend Krita for anyone starting out with digital art, it's free and pretty easy to understand. Once they want to level up with more cool features I recommend CSP
Everybody fell in love with Clip Studio Paint. I got onboard immediately when it went from Manga Studio 4, to version 5. Version 5 was a whole different ballgame. The price was cut in half, then cut in half again. In terms of drawing, it was amazing. So we all fell in love it. I bought copies for the whole family. LOL For real. But I've been a Photoshop user for decades and I'm still a Photoshop user. CSP being cheaper is a great thing, as long as it can get the job done. If your work fits within the scope of what CSP can do, then you win big time. For me though, Drawing or painting is only a part of what I do so Clip Studio has never actually replaced Photoshop. It just replaces a part of what I sometimes did in Photoshop. Drawing and painting. But Photoshop still has a TON of features and functions that CSP doesn't have. Another thing about Photoshop is that it's still a lot faster than CSP. By the time CSP for iOS came out, the good folks behind this great software began to tip their hand. They began to show us why they made it so cheap. The plan must have been to get as many people on board as possible, then finally move to a subscription model. First, they did it with the iOS version. Now, the desktop version also has a subscription option. It's exactly how other companies approached subscriptions. First, as an option then eventually, they remove the perpetual license option completely. CSP will of course take the same route eventually. For that probably means that I will stick with what I have because as much as I love it, it's not critical enough to my workflow for me to need to keep up with all of the new updates. Which frankly have been in the direction of animation anyway, rather than improving the 2d drawing aspects of the software or doing things like adding more Photoshop like functionality.
So interesting! Ugh I really hope they don’t fully go into a subscription...I don’t find it to be slower than Photoshop to be honest and I don’t agree that Photoshop has a “a TON of features” more than CSP, that is simply not true. Regardless, I made this video in the hopes of showing artists out there that Photoshop is not necessarily the default art program they have to go to, there are alternatives, especially if they are specifically illustrators--just another perspective. Yes, the 2D animation is definitely getting more and more developed, but I see them improving the drawing and comic-making features--like how they just released more text editing capabilities (so long overdue but wtv). Gosh I hope they don’t go full-subscription but a cynic might agree with you 😭 Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts.
@@JGVIllustrations You do know that Celcys has since created a subscription version alongside their regular version, right? I wasn't being cynical. I was being logical.
Ha, I bet!!! Hopefully in the future it will be more integrated in the graphics industry, but also CSP really needs to up their game with basic graphic design features like freakin text editing, it kills me that I still have to rely on Photoshop to edit text
@@JGVIllustrations Photoshop is extremely laggy on my computer (even with 32 GB of RAM, and I don’t think it’s my computer since Illustrator, Dreamweaver (an Adobe 3D program), and detailed games like No Man’s Sky run flawlessly on the highest settings. I literally have no idea why Photoshop runs so bad on my computer. When I have to use it, I have to use the old 2019 version because the new one is weirdly laggy (and for some reason didn’t let me access some blending modes like Overlay??? Do you have a fix for that?)), so I really do prefer to use CSP for Illustration and certain types of graphics… although, I sometimes do use Illustrator for text because CSP’s text tools are kind of mediocre, even when you find out things like how to adjust the kerning, tracking, and line spacing. Their recent update kind of lets you edit text, but you can’t use Mesh Transformation on it. But overall, I honestly am always glad when I don’t have to use Photoshop on a job for graphic design, especially if it’s more illustrative in quality because Clip Studio is much faster for high quality illustration (when you customize and optimize the workspace), like for picking colors for example. In PS, I can only pick RGB Sliders or HSV Sliders, can’t have them both at the same time (I like the sliders because they are more analogous to color mixing traditionally even if it’s additive; the color wheel has always been more “direct,” but more confusing to me because I can never color match or get the color imagine exactly with it), which slows me down to pick between them. And that’s just _one_ example. If they have only Adobe, I’d only use Photoshop for the final effects on the piece and use Illustrator for the bulk of the work. Have you ever been on any kind of work where they’ve only had Photoshop and no other Adobe software?
Hi Babi! Well it depends on what you’re trying to make. Do you want to be making graphic design art using vector art? If that is the case, you should probably stick to Adobe Illustrator as that is what is designed for. If you’re learning about Clip Studio Paint, let me know if there is anything you’d like me to cover for you to learn 👍
Hey! Clip Studio Paint is by far better, it's designed specifically for drawing, unlike Photoshop (designed for editing photos). It's important to keep in mind why these softwares were created in the first place and they both were designed with different intentions.
I bought CSP on a black friday sale for $25 bucks, I later upgraded to the EX for $80. I've been using CSP for over a year now. Also CSP has brush packs on their website graphixly.com
That’s a great deal! I’ve been using for about 3 or 4 years and I’m so happy with it-I really want artists to reconsider using photoshop if they can’t afford it and not feel like they have to settle for something less. 👍
I'm a Photoshop user and have been for many years and like a lot of people am on a monthly subscription. Recently I've got back into character design and I want to explore 3D modelling and realised I have CSP on my PC and have never used it! (it came free with a tablet I bought ages ago) From what I've seen from videos on YT I can pretty much do everything I want to do in CSP except logo design and text work which I'll still use PS for but for everything else I'm gonna be using Clip Studio Paint from now on. I may even start using Affinity Designer for my logo stuff and do away with PS altogether as I rarely seem to use it now so I'm paying for service that I can do in other software I already have!
Thank you very much for your helpful information! It is great that Adobe CreativeCloud gets competitors - it can affect the pricing in the future! If I can afford it, I'd probably buy both, Clip Studio for painting and Photoshop for designing. Right now, I am not willing to pay 600€ annually for Creative Cloud/Photoshop and animations if and when there are other options at a much lesser price. It depends on how successful you are financial. I am grateful for the Clip Paint possibility! I like Photoshop, anyway, and Illustrator. I do not have experience with Clip Paint - I found it today, but by now, I feel it fascinating!
I know right! I’d love to put some pressure on them to not be so harsh on independent artists. I agree, it does depend on how financially you stand. I know it’s expensive....$600 annually is A LOT. But I honestly don’t have an alternative software to recommend if you work strictly in graphic design/vector art. If you are a graphic designer, for the sake of your career, it might be best to stick to Adobe illustrator for now. If you don’t make a lot a vector art then YES, check out Clip Studio Paint and let me know if there is anything you’d like me to cover for you to learn.
Affinity Photo and Designer are half price at the moment and are the best competitors to Photoshop and Illustrator right now IMO. If nothing else, you can try them out free for 90 days to see if they work for you.
Hi! Absolutely, you just need to make sure you get a good scan of that artwork--by “good” I mean, get it as high-resolution/large size as you can so you can really zoom in on Clip Studio Paint and erase or color over or blend, whatever you need to do.
Thank you! Hahaha on the couch, that’s hilarious. I hope you managed to snag CSP’s sale, but fear not, they have crazy sales all the time so I guarantee you won’t have to wait a year to meet it again. Thank you for watching
Already have a CSP. Just a question: A lot of online courses are using Photoshop, there's rarely any courses for CSP. The only one I've managed to find one in Paintable, which allows for all drawing software. If I do take an online course that only uses Photoshop, any similar features in CSP I should be aware of?
Awesome! Yes, that is true, there aren't as many courses out there like there are for Photoshop, luckily UA-cam is an excellent resource for getting know how to use CSP--- I have tutorials in my channel on making CSP art as well. As far similar features---their basic features are fairly similar: layers, brushes, image adjustments, yeah pretty similar enough. It's learning what makes CSP different from Photoshop that is more interesting! (they're line adjustment controls, database of art resources like textures and 3d models, comic-making features, etc...)
i knew about other softwares. It's the UI and the workspace I had trouble with. It's not until I could use Procreate with apple pencil that I finally was able to get rid of Photoshop. Now I'm free from Adobe product subscription even though I still have Photoshop CS6 to do texturing for my 3D mesh works.
I'm sure Procreate helped a lot of artists break their reliance on Photoshop. I love Procreate. So is CSP on the iPad better than Procreate? I too still have CS6 too for any random adjustments I need to make that CSP can't. That's funny that you mention that, I'm glad I'm not the only one still using an old version. Especially if you're using it for 3D art.
JGV Illustrations both Procreate and CSP are good. Nothing is better than the other. I make clip art in procreate and Procreate doesn’t have toolbar filling my ipad screen so i can concentrate. I actually don’t make comic often but when I do, it’s a simple one, short and funny (funny events that have happened in my family). For the 3D mesh work, I use photoshop to texture the UV-map. I’ve been working on my ipad a lot since 2018 and haven’t touched Photoshop and if I do, I use it to texture, which I can do in CS6 and in Affinity Photo. For vector work I use AI CS6 and Affinity Designer. I stopped my adobe CC sub in 2018 and I don’t regret it.
JGV Illustrations PS: it’s been only 3 days that I’m learning CSP. I’m still very confused and it’s still difficult for me to grasp. But the nice UI of it intrigues me (hard to believe that I am able to put my effort to learn only because the UI looks nice).
Actually, I re-read your comment and I don’t believe you can “pull” your active canvas out of the main program window into a separate monitor/screen. But you can divide the active window in multiple canvases and also keep certain menus on top/disconnected from side menus. I thought you were referring to just the capability to move the menu boxes around.
Yes it is! Krita is just a VERY simple digital art software, that’s why it;s free. It’s great if you’re a casual digital artist that doesn’t want to pay for a software, really. CSP is far superior for the tons of features that it offers, like the ones I cover in the video.
It’s SO useful!! I think also just the fact that there’s a quick button for it, instead of having to do 3 steps of turning the entire layer a certain light blue--that speed and time-cutting feature is so underrated
Like 4 things you mentioned photoshopped can actually do it, stabilization, width, blue layer, use layer as reference, they are not a solo option but you can do all those
Great video! Im more of adobe illustrator user for digital art. Because I vector my art. But recently got into Clip studio paint, but have not done anything on it yet. Ive been watching a ton of videos because I'm in that learning curve. But i would like to draw something on it soon. I see that it also uses vector. So I'm I want to see how this can be compared to Ai. Also Bryan Allen is amazing! I have his brushes also and follow his work and videos. Do you draw in pixel or vector? Or what's your take on vector? I feel that i will love Clip Studio Paint, but I'm finding it difficult to get use to because there's so much 😅
That's so funny that you say that because I feel the SAME way about Adobe Illustrator. I can't tell you how many times I've tried learning how to use it and have not managed to make anything out of it, haha. Vector art is more technical, in my opinion, because you're more manipulating shapes and curves to get the right shapes--it's much more geometric and less "organic" than say straight drawing/painting, so that's probably why it's hard for me to ever make the transition to vector art. I've tried pixel art but I don't have the patience! Lmao. Honestly, it makes sense why grasping Clip Studio might feel slow for you, I would say start small and simple by just making a few drawings with the G-Pen tool and playing around with the stabilization attribute (inside the brush tool's settings). Once you got that down, move to coloring it with just one brush tool. I don't think Clip Studio is better with vector than Adobe, so I wouldn't trust a big switch if you're looking to replace it.
Thank you! This was helpful. Yeah, I was thinking the vector layers in CSP would be useful since I am using a brush. But I’m confused as to how they work and if I can export straight to print without modifications when I’m done and If it doesn’t get pixelated changing size. But you’re right at the most. Since I’m in the learning curve, I’ll start out small and work my way through everything.
I used to use AI, too, but if you want a similar vector app, other than Clip Studio you can use Affinity Designer as it's closer to AI and both CSP and AD have ipad app, too. I have both AD and CSP. I love both. I am still learning CSP, though
Right no I'm in a weird spot, I've been drawing digitally as a hobby for over a year using exclusively photoshop, I think I've gained a lot of practice and can get very smooth lines using the smoothing feature, the thing is I want to start getting into animation and photoshop is very cluncky for that, I rece tly downloaded clip studio paint and I felt right at home with the interface but I can't get behind the lines. The stabilizing option just doesn't feel right to me no matter how high ot low I set it I can0t control my lines and fail to even trace over my own photoshop drawings.
Interesting! Firstly I’m glad you are liking CSP :) As for the line stabilization, I wonder if it might have something to do with your tablet settings or even the brush settings you’re using.
Im looking into Clip Studio Paint, and I also hate subscription based software. So why is the desktop version a one-time purchase and does the iPad version also have that aweful subscription model. I think I stick with Paintstorm studio.
Hi Gregor, I’m not sure why the ipad version is subscription-based. I love that the desktop version is just a one-time purchase and I really hope that doesn’t change.
Photoshop has smothing now... but I still don't like drawing in it for some reason. Im going to learn Clip, and have Photoshop for my graphic design stuff
@@JGVIllustrations You convinced me to download it :) , you do such great work, I am eager to try clip studio. I am especially excited about the 3d poses to use as a reference for compositions. You have a wonderful channel ! If you have time in the future, perhaps we can do a collab via skype or something like that.
Thanks so much! I’ve used the 3D posing a few times but I’d like to learn more about it because it IS very neat. Good luck! A collab? I’d love that! I’m swamped working on my comic preparing for the relaunch but I’ll reach out to you when my time opens up :)
@@JGVIllustrations Your comic book is going to be a huge success, I can feel it! yes, when you have time and things slow down, let me know. it would be an honor to collab with!!! Thank you so much for your wonderful responses!! :)
some of the reasons it added (PAIN)t is because they gonna expand products. Modeller is the first to come and a necessary for 3D material. Maybe they will do 3D sculpting, specific vector software, movie editor, etc. This more and more become photoshopish.. And Krita could soon become paid, asset market wise
Yup yup! I think 3D sector is growing--Blender is becoming popular for illustrators and CSP is coming out with more 3D features. And yeah they ironically are becoming like Photoshop--the very program their current customer flocked away from. Hello Krita! 😂
Thank you for the video! It seems to me that ill swith to Clip Studio. I also always thought that Ps was designed to edit photos and only after it became an artist oriented application, but not so much. I usually use Sketchbook Pro but it also not as good because of the small amount of functions there.
Totally! They have sales every few months so definitely jump when it’s half off. I give tips on how to work with Clip Studio in my digital art vlogs too so once you buy it you’re welcome to let me know what you’d like to learn more or if you have any questions!
Same! I mean, nothing is ever going to be perfect per say, and for the great price, I think CSP is a great deal for what you can do in it. Glad to hear you’re happy with it 💗
I hear ya! It can take a lot of energy and time to move softwares. Take your time and start with the easy stuff, like how to use one or two brushes on one layer. I wish you the best :)
Yes~! It’s in the brush settings and then inside the settings of the actual feature being looked into so you do have to look for it but I’ve seen the option offered for features like stabilization, opacity, etc…
i've been using corel painter and tbh im looking to switch because i feel like corel painter makes you jump through hoops to get the desired result, i've watch vids on it and artist always say corel painter is hard to use.
you deserve more subs!!! I loved this video as someone looking into clip studio. also oh my goodness, I did not know photoshop didnt have stabilisation! I've been working in medibang and even that has a similar function! crazy. well bye photoshop lol
Thank you, I appreciate that! Photoshop does have stabilization, I added a note on the description---it's been a recent addition but it's not as good as Clip Studio Paint's and regardless CSP is superior for more reasons on top of that if you are an illustrator and would like a sofware for digital painting and drawing.
Actually just a quick correction there 3 versions of csp the first and cheapest is the debut version which you did not mention but it has less features overall. Then it's just like you said the pro and the ex versions.
for some reason, drawing itself feels a lot better in CSP than in Photoshop. Comparing with traditional tools the overall feeling of sketching in photoshop is like when drawing with very round and thick wax crayons, while clipstudio paint feels more like working with a stiff quill pen, which gives every single line or mark a more satisfying appeal. This is my personal opinion. I fiddled a lot with the brush engine and I even prefer CSP over the hailed procreate for sketching. Its probably the result of a wellplaced marketing campaign that PS is considered industry standard.
I know that's your opinion, but I genuinely feel the same way about how it feels more natural to draw in CSP than Photoshop and Procreate. I do find myself drawing more on Procreate but that's just out of convenience (I'm on my ipad more these days than computer and no I don't use the CSP ipad version just because I can't justify another a subscription). And yeah PS is the industry standard, for good reason because it is more versatile for non-illustrators to share for projects but wtv. Glad you agree as well! Thanks so much for watching :)
as someone who uses photoshop, i think i'd actually like to use them both in conjuction, however, if i just get pro for now, do you still pay like $200 for EX? or is that price just as a stand alone product if you buy EX straight up?
Hi! Yes, the $200 is just the standalone price so if you get the pro and then upgrade, you don't actually need to pay an entire new price, you just pay the difference. My reply is so DAMN LATE so I'm sure you already know that but thanks for reaching out regardless. If you got CSP I hope you're enjoying it :)
Jajaja gracias!
Krita is a really great free art software but it's very simple compared to Clip, so if you're looking to up your digital art game and would like to make comics, I definitely think you should buy it (at least the "pro" version, the cheaper). And yes! Free updates for life. Good luck!!
I’ve tried it and I do like it considering that it’s free-I love its simple interface. But it doesn’t have anywhere near the amount of great features CSP offers so if you have $50 to invest in a powerful art software CSP is definitely worth it over Krita.
Thanks for an excellent breakdown. Because of what you said about its print capabilities, I have decided not to get it because I am creating a children’s book.
i'm just curious to know what happens to the photoshop in your computer when the subscription expires and you stop paying adobe? does it disappear or can you not use it anymore?
I can tell you right now what happens 😂 I’ve always had a bootleg Photoshop, either CS3 or now CS6, but I accidentally downloaded a trial version of another adobe product to try....so now, through some nasty Adobe spyware or whatever, they have disabled my bootleg Photoshop. And you’re wondering what does “disable” mean and look like right? Well it’s about 30 days of a pop-up window that you can’t exit out of (unless you Ctr +alt+del it but it comes back 15 minutes later) so I have just gotten in the habit of moving the window down to the very bottom of the screen. But it’s been 30 days now so it has disabled the my bootleg program, it won’t fully open and I still get that stupid pop-up every day. I now exclusively use Clip Studio Paint, especially since they recently updated their text editing capability to be less crappy, so I don’t use Photoshop at all but I still get the stupid pop-up. I have more techie friends who could probably help me disable the pop-up window or better yet uninstall all of Adobe because I’m 100% over Adobe, so I will reach out to them eventually. But since you’re asking--this is my experience with a bootleg Adobe product being recognized by Adobe. If your question is more specifically what ‘happens when your subscription expires,’ I’m sure it’s the same annoying tactics where it, obviously, won’t allow you to use the program, and gives you a stupid pop up window to remind you that your ridiculously expensive subscription has expired for infinitum. Do I sound salty? Yes. Don’t be fooled to think that you need to pay for Photoshop if you’re an illustrator. If you think you do, please reach out to me and I would be happy to guide you to how to use Clip Studio Paint. It has become almost a personal moral mission for me. Artists don’t deserve this corporate garbage of what Adobe makes you go through to use even basic digital art tools that one can access for free (like Krita) but even Clip Studio Paint is reasonably priced for the incredible features it offers.
@@JGVIllustrations thank you for the very detailed and heartfelt explanation...i can feel the frustration in your reply which i only felt slightly in your vid...but it really is cringy how adobes subscription works...so i think i'll probably stick with krita since i also still can't afford csp right now...
PS is the creative industry's "Gold Standard" in Photo Editing and Illustration. If money is an issue, then it's a different debate. I also use Clip Studio Paint, Procreate, Corel Painter, Sketchbook Pro, and Krita. Now CSP is also a subscription-based software following PhotoShop & Corel Painter.
Isn’t it great?! I never thought I’d be able to comfortably draw digitally as I felt that I could only do it with a pencil and then color everything digitally, but CSP definitely changed my attitude on that. Glad you like it for drawing!
@@JGVIllustrations I tried to find PS CS6 windows full version but they can be expensive on Ebay. I also like Affinity photo and sketchbook pro on Windows. With ipad pro I like Procreate and infinite painter.
I have clipstudio for 3 years now and im pretty mad at this point ... They didn't enhance the software at all in these 3 years even though the program has so many serious shortcomings ... Since ive bought it ive only seen they trying to shove hardware controllers down my throat, a complete focus on iPad users while leaving desktop with no enhancement or new feature ... They didn't add abr support , 70% of the vector tools are underdeveloped , in alpha state and don't actually work for any serious work , filters are from the 90s running into artifacts pretty quickly ... The png export is so slow , its probably from v1 and was never upgraded. Performance overall is pretty laggy on print resolution documents Yes it also has its good sides of course but when you pay a few hundred dollars for such a software you actually think the development would continue and they wouldn't just use your money for ipad users and strange controllers and never give a second thought about desktop development ..at this point they are worse than Adobe with their schemes
Hi Alex! That’s understandable. Your comment is from a year ago and since then CSP has released a bunch of new features and improvements. As for vector tools, yeah they’re not the best at all but that’s why I don’t recommend graphic designers to use CSP, it’s not designed for vector art or text art. I’m sorry to hear you’re not happy with it, I don’t have issues with lag or resolution. I also don’t use filters really--again CSP is not designed for editing, it’s for literally drawing and painting, that’s where they excel at.
i really start trying drawing digital art my first time this week and i download ((clip studio paint)) really so so nice now i am trying to learn more about this software is easy to learn in this softwer comfortable for useing to beginners and Professional artist😇👍🏻🖊🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💯💯💯
Amazing! Sorry for replying this late, how have you been doing with your art and Clip Studio Paint? Is there anything you’d like me to cover in a video?
@@JGVIllustrations it's very great software i really like it now i am practise with it in this month 👍🏻😇 i feel comfortable with the softwere .. only one thing i didn't know .. if there any brushes can make lighte in the painting ?🙏🏻 or can you make a video about how we can make light in the paintng like lazer lighte or sun light or moon lighte tell as the easiest ways if you can🙏🏻✨😇
Totally! It’s hard to believe but this video is already over a year old so some of these features, or lack of, might be different now. I still prefer CSP over PS for illustration and comics, but I’m glad they introduced stabilization feature, although I’ve been told it’s not very good, but hey 👍
Can anyone tell me how to scan a traditional comic page in clip studio so I can color it without messing up the lineart? I learned the "load selection" by copying the blue channel method in PS but how is it done here in CSP?
Coloring it without messing up the lineart? I just turn the image’s layer property to Multiply so it can be transparent under color layers, hope that helps
Thanks for clarifying
yes, clip studio is way more intuitive, its UI is more artist friendly, photoshop its like a driving a big truck, and so expensive, i bought csp a few years ago and is the best choice i took also gets better each update, beautiful work you are a pro, your style reminds me Winsor McCays work
Hahaha that's a great analogy 😂 And thank you! I love McCays' whimsical work, what a compliment!
Been using Photoshop for a bit and it never felt quite right when it comes to line art\inking stuff. So glad I found this video. Thank you!
Yes! Photoshop is not designed for inking-definitely give CSP a try :) Thank you for watching!
I've switched to using Affinity Photo with Clip Studio paint and that has been an amazing combination! No more subscription and all of the tools I need. Thanks for the awesome video!
Amazing! I’m happy for you :) t’s always a great feeling to find the right workflow for yourself--and without hitting the wallet lol
Affinity for Photo Editing and Vector work ClipStudio for all artistry Resolve for Video Editing.
jp parks yessssss
the vector tools in cp suck though , I draw my roughs in blender these days
@@alexmehler6765 w/ the grease pencil? I've been considering Blender as another option :-)
This is brilliant! I want to do more illustration and needed some guidance. Thank you for shedding some light on this. It helps tons.
No problem! Glad I could be of help
Layer color toggle is a great option to have... you change the default color on the button btw (I have mine set to a pinkish red), can also recolor on the fly, really useful for working with multiple layers at the same that you need to distinguish ❤️ clip studio
Layer color toggle?! I'm going to have to check that out! Thank you for the tip ;)
I figured it out, by the way. AMAZING
JGV Illustrations oh! I didn’t see the first response, glad you found it 👍
Adobe is notorious for making making your current software that you have with them obsolete
and then they have the nerve to tell you to pay A LOT of money for their new version.
No discounts, no nothing for purchasing it.
The nerve indeed! 😤

@@JGVIllustrations I just got the pro version from the same sale!!
aditya thakur perfect 👌
I'm considering between the two programs and your video provides a lot of useful info I was looking for. Helps me so much. Thank you!!
Yay!! I’m so glad it helped, let me know if there’s anything else you’d like me to cover about CSP or illustration in general in the near future. 👍
I have never used any digital art software. I've always used old school art supplies. But I'm working on a massive graphic novel and I think digital coloring is the way to go. So I've been doing research in to what hardware and software I need to buy.... I've got a really good job so money isn't the issue. Just easy of use and quality.
This is the first video of yours that I've seen and you immediately got a subscriber
👍👍👍👍
You're beautiful and you speak clearly with a great voice.
Great job!
Thanks Clark! I'm glad you understood the nuance there as I'm not against Photoshop entirely, it's just not a good fit for me. I love your icon
I know!!! I’m so excited to bring in my old Grutbrushes from Photoshop because I am 100% DONE with Photoshop, BYE
I've been using CSP for 5 years and didn't know about changing like width! Thank you!
What! Amazing!
5:51 You should have started with this, like, DAMN, you have no idea how many drawings I wish I could have changed with that feature. Now I'm definitely going to try it out. Thank you
Lololl!! That's awesome
Photoshop does have this feature.
As much as I enjoyed her nicely presented video and lovely artwork, it's obvious that she was not familiar with Photoshop's many amazing tools and features, so she did miss completely, that there is a simple way to make lines thinner or thicker.
Clip Studio Paint IS a great price and I'm not knocking it, but many of the things that she states Photoshop can't do, are simply because she is not familiar enough with it.
the "Welcome to my Ted talk" made me subscribe instantly.
Bahaha, much appreciated 😂👌
4:52 Adobe photoshop CC also has a stabilization feature, it called "smoothing", and it also can be adjusted for each brush.
Nice video! I use Krita and probably will never switch but I love the way you say your opinion!
Krita is great! Thank you :)
Oh my I love your background! The background music also fits well
Thank you, it's cozy :)
i just switched to CSP cause now they have a monthly subscription of $4.45 a month (which i can handle compared to adobe and their heavy software) + free three months for first time use! and i find it great is cause i can use CSP paying cheap and once a sale shows up and i have saved up i’ll be able to buy the actual thing
YAY congrats!! I hope you like it :) And honestly that game plan sounds pretty good--they drop sales pretty often.
When you dive deep inside, there are a lot of features that makes an easy choice for illustrators.
I've been using it for a few years now and I'm STILL learning cool things about it. I totally agree 👍
Clip Studio can now import photoshop brushes or so they say you can. I have not tried it yet but the latest version is supposed to be able to do it.
Same! I haven’t tried it yet and I have a whole brush pack from Grut Brushes to try to import. I’d like to see soon if they are able to be imported at CSP claims 🤔
Would you do a revisit to this topic? CSP has had some nice changes since you made this video (e.g. it now has liquify and supports Photoshop brushes)
What is better about CSP than Krita or Gimp? Have you tried them? Thank you for a review!
Hi Martin! I really REALLY hope so, because it's a definite bummer.
Really helpful and decisive for me Keep on you're great.
Thank so much! Glad you think so
You can distort text now, and you can put photoshop brushes directly into clip now (:
I have Clip Studio Paints but I just wanted to make sure I made the right choice :>
Pretty much! Thanks you for sharing, I've always wanted to try Sai since so many Japanese manga/anime artists use it
So much yes!
Awesome video ,very funny ,thanks for your in put!
Thank you
Everybody fell in love with Clip Studio Paint.
I'm a graphic designer as my day job and an illustrator as my passion and I wish I could use csp for everything lol
Which better clip studio paint or Adobe illustrator? I've try to using clip studio paint but it confused me too complicated to use.
If both softwares were free, whats better for someone who wants to draw realism?
(it came free with a tablet I bought ages ago)
From what I've seen from videos on YT I can pretty much do everything I want to do in CSP except logo design and text work which I'll still use PS for but for everything else I'm gonna be using Clip Studio Paint from now on. I may even start using Affinity Designer for my logo stuff and do away with PS altogether as I rarely seem to use it now so I'm paying for service that I can do in other software I already have!
You just summarized what I think! That's awesome, thanks for sharing and for watching!
Thank you for creating this video! I want to know if I can edit traditional artwork in clip studio?
*Artwork done in color pencil and marker. *
Hi! Absolutely, you just need to make sure you get a good scan of that artwork--by “good” I mean, get it as high-resolution/large size as you can so you can really zoom in on Clip Studio Paint and erase or color over or blend, whatever you need to do.
My only gripe about CSP is needing subscription to use on mobile devices.
And I fear that the desktop version will soon follow suit.
I hear you and I am concerned as well that that will be the future of the desktop version too.
BROTHER, YOU ARE THE BEST!!! You oooh really helped me!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Great content. Feels like you're just talking to me in the couch. I'm convinced and I'm getting CSP now. . . before the sale ends today.
Thank you! Hahaha on the couch, that’s hilarious. I hope you managed to snag CSP’s sale, but fear not, they have crazy sales all the time so I guarantee you won’t have to wait a year to meet it again. Thank you for watching
Thank you for explaining this thoroughly!
thanks, it actually let me through so i could download it.
You have a really beautiful voice
Thank you
Already have a CSP.
But the nice UI of it intrigues me (hard to believe that I am able to put my effort to learn only because the UI looks nice).
with photoshop you can leave the menu in one screen and just your canvas on the screen that you draw. can we do this with csp?
Yes :)
@@JGVIllustrations ic thanks for your input. I'm considering csp but need as much feedback
I just tried it in both Photoshop and CSP
Is CSP way better than Krita ? Thx for the vid :-D
Yes it is! Krita is just a VERY simple digital art software, that’s why it;s free. It’s great if you’re a casual digital artist that doesn’t want to pay for a software, really. CSP is far superior for the tons of features that it offers, like the ones I cover in the video.
I think the blueing the layer is draft mode makes a non printable blue layer that u r right serves as a draft layer so u can pencil or ink over it
It’s SO useful!! I think also just the fact that there’s a quick button for it, instead of having to do 3 steps of turning the entire layer a certain light blue--that speed and time-cutting feature is so underrated
Like 4 things you mentioned photoshopped can actually do it, stabilization, width, blue layer, use layer as reference, they are not a solo option but you can do all those
Absolutely--I mentioned most of that in my video, the thing is Photoshop just doesn’t do it as well and that’s why CSP is better.
@@JGVIllustrations yeah i believe just with the price people should chose CSP hahah
Fernandez Escalera Melanie Nubia pretty much 😂😂
I like you pure and clear English. ty for video!
Thank you! Thank you for watching :)
Firstly I’m glad you are liking CSP :) As for the line stabilization, I wonder if it might have something to do with your tablet settings or even the brush settings you’re using.
good work king, love you
Im looking into Clip Studio Paint, and I also hate subscription based software.
Thankyou for this; you helped me decide.
Yay!
Photoshop has smothing now... but I still don't like drawing in it for some reason. Im going to learn Clip, and have Photoshop for my graphic design stuff
I think that's the way to go too! (Photoshop for graphic design, CSP for illustration/digital art) :) Thanks for watching!
Thank you so very much for your viddeo and the info on Clip Studio! Now I have to think. I currently use Krita and Procreate.
No problem!! I love Procreate, let me know if you every have questions about Clip Studio, I'd be happy to help
Timothy John-Luke Smith, PSA Thank you!! I really appreciate it
some of the reasons it added (PAIN)t is because they gonna expand products.
thank you and all the best to you! 😊
Wow what about drawing with that white bg. ahhhh my eyeeeeees!
😂😂😂
I dont really mind the downsides, before discovering this, i used to create designs on paint, and i was ok with it. Im really happy with clip studio
Same! I mean, nothing is ever going to be perfect per say, and for the great price, I think CSP is a great deal for what you can do in it. Glad to hear you’re happy with it 💗
Wow, you actually read my comment, thanks!😀
bought CSP pro, but still not migrating from SAI lmao I'm watching this video, hoping one day I'll find the strength to leave my comfort zones.
I hear ya! It can take a lot of energy and time to move softwares. Take your time and start with the easy stuff, like how to use one or two brushes on one layer. I wish you the best :)
Well done on your first video!
Nikita K thank you! 🤗
I am just awfully confused with everything that is Clip art studio. It feels clunky and strange to me. I don't know how to get used to clip art.
I can see how it can be overwhelming at first. I’ll do a video on a beginner’s tour of Clip Studio Paint soon 👍
where is the macro keyboard you were talking about.
Macro keyboard? I’m not sure what you mean! Can you point me to the time stamp that I mentioned it?
There's one feature that I really miss in CSP - stroke orientation with pen tilt.
I’m pretty sure they added that, but it’s in the brush settings so you’d have to add it for every brush you want to use it in, I believe.
@@ayaneagano6059 Hmm... I need to check it.
What are some examples?
Yeah Corel painter is…okay. If you want to jump ship, just go with Clip Studio Paint.
you deserve more subs!!!
I've never heard of the debut version, interesting!
for some reason, drawing itself feels a lot better in CSP than in Photoshop.
Thank you, it works perfect!
as someone who uses photoshop, i think i'd actually like to use them both in conjuction, however, if i just get pro for now, do you still pay like $200 for EX? or is that price just as a stand alone product if you buy EX straight up?
Is that an original My Little Pony mug? 7:13
It sure is!!! My fav mug lol

Hello. Can you tell what advantage does Clip has over krita? I'm thinking of buying Paint Pro. Also, do you get free updates once you buy it ?
Krita is a really great free art software but it's very simple compared to Clip, so if you're looking to up your digital art game and would like to make comics, I definitely think you should buy it (at least the "pro" version, the cheaper). And yes! Free updates for life. Good luck!!
You can use Krita, it's TOTALLY free.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! You have me sold
Lol! I’m not aware of the audio being off but thanks for watching!
@@JGVIllustrations oh snap I just rewatched it on my phone to find the timestamp and it's playing fine. Must have glitched out on my pc 😬
i'm just curious to know what happens to the photoshop in your computer when the subscription expires and you stop paying adobe? does it disappear or can you not use it anymore?
I wish clip studio had more of the adobe illustrator features like align option.
I agree!
I love Clip Studio Paint
It's the best right?! My next video will explore the 3D model poses feature
This is first video of yours that i have seen and im glad i found your channel ^v^
Hey really?! Thanks so much for watching 💗 Let me know if there’s anything you’d like me to ever cover art-wise 🤔
I use CSP pro as my main drawing software on my PC.
With ipad pro I like Procreate and infinite painter.
yo bro, really thankya. Big respect
I was going to trial it but now they have a weirdly complicated subscription model
Photoshop does and now it looks like CSP is jumping unto that stupid business model next year too :/
I have clipstudio for 3 years now and im pretty mad at this point ...
Performance overall is pretty laggy on print resolution documents
Yes it also has its good sides of course but when you pay a few hundred dollars for such a software you actually think the development would continue and they wouldn't just use your money for ipad users and strange controllers and never give a second thought about desktop development ..at this point they are worse than Adobe with their schemes

Photoshop does have the ‘smoothing’ slider up the top, it probably should be called stabiliser though.
Totally! It’s hard to believe but this video is already over a year old so some of these features, or lack of, might be different now. I still prefer CSP over PS for illustration and comics, but I’m glad they introduced stabilization feature, although I’ve been told it’s not very good, but hey 👍
CSP = Love !
yes 🥰
Can anyone tell me how to scan a traditional comic page in clip studio so I can color it without messing up the lineart? I learned the "load selection" by copying the blue channel method in PS but how is it done here in CSP?
Coloring it without messing up the lineart? I just turn the image’s layer property to Multiply so it can be transparent under color layers, hope that helps
