      @Viktor with a K Now, is that coming from an ex Photoshop user, or just someone with an idea of what Photoshop can do?
      For people who have used a program for years, it becomes difficult to transition to a new program.
      However, for someone who isn't already accustomed to any particular program, learning the ins and outs of a new one isn't nearly as bad.

    Update for people watching this video. As of August 2022, Clip Studio Paint has announced a switch to a subscription based service starting with version 2.0. If you bought the program, you will no longer get updates after the last 1.xx update unless you switch to the subscription. Subscription price isn't known yet. Support for 1.xx will also stop once CSP 3.x is launched, when that is is unknown.
    Edit as of the 29th of October, 2022:
    CSP seems to have gone back on this decision, as on their website they state that both CSP 2 and CSP 3 will be available for one-time purchase. But remember, if they think they can get away with changing to a subscription model, they will do it. Do not ever let them, just as community outcry caused them to change it back this time.

    • @dayuchuu
      @dayuchuu Рік тому +6

      Whenever people talk about this they conveniently forget to mention that a perpetual license is still available for purchase. The subscription is only for updates of a new major release. If you want the updates for 2.x wait till 3.x drops and get the license for that. I highly doubt that there will be any game changing updates going forward that make you go "damn I NEED that", even 1.x as it is is probably enough for the majority of users.
      Don't get me wrong, I am definitely no fan of subscriptions and I'd really wish CSP would be more transparent about why this choice was made but comparing this to whatever the hell Adobe is doing isn't really the way to go. They are in no way the same.
      CSP will NOT be subscription based. The updates are the only thing that will be locked behind a subscription model and we are most likely talking about updates that most users won't urgently need. I feel like people are making a way bigger deal out of this than it has to be.

    I've been using Clip Studio Paint for several years now on my comic, having switched over from Photoshop years ago. I'm fully sold on CSP for all art projects besides photo manipulation or pixel art. It draws better, it paints better, and it ESPECIALLY inks better. Plus there are nice comic-specific functions that Photoshop simply doesn't have. Clip Studio Paint is the program of choice for me even when I'm just making character art and paintings.
    Thanks for the good video. I came to all the same conclusions you did, and years later I find myself wishing Photoshop would adopt certain features CSP has, like being able to quickly flip the entire canvas horizontally to check your balance.

    I know a billion people probably already gave you this tip, but for your lineart! If you make your panels on a vector layer (the layer button with a small box next to the normal layer button) there's a "change vector width" tool that you can use to change the width of your lines and give it more character. That said, you can also use the ruler tools called "Linear Ruler" and even "Ruler pen" to laydown guides for your panels, then go over those lines with your pen and it'll trace the rulers exactly, with the texter of your pen and your widths!

That might fix you pen setting issues. Would love to see a clip studio tutorial down the line. I use this program a fair amount but I am still illiterate when it comes to digital art program functions and always like to see more experienced artists show how some of this stuff is actually used.

    Hi! An avid Clip Studio Paint user here...
    A good thing about CSP is that you can import brushes that the community has made. I didn't like the default brushes either (way too smooth lol) so when you click on the icon and the whole "what do you wanna do"-stuff comes on you can click on the community icon(I think?) and *swoop* you can just easily download really beautiful brushes with lotsa texture and weight!
    Thought I'd mention it if you wanted to keep using the program! Keep on being great!

    If you want to do straight lines with pressure differences you should use the ruler first, and then you draw in the ruler lines that you created :)
    You can download a lot of content too. Brushes, and much more.(Really easy and inside the program) For comics Clip Studio is leader i think. Photoshop it's great for a lot of things, for sure if you want to make complex image composition and editing it's better, but they need to put more attention to the illustration side.

    1 Tip for Clip Studio Paint (EX)
    If you click on the eyedropper function, there is a sub tool labeled "adjust line width". You can then adjust the amount of width you'd like to thicken or thin your lines with after you have clicked on "adjust line width". Then you can go over the lines and it changes the width, although some erasing is needed to make it look smooth.
    I'm new to this program as well, so that's all I know for now, but I'll edit if I find any more tips I think are helpful.

    Random Digital Drawing Question:
    I've been having some trouble with making lineart for my pieces, mostly since any brush I try seems to lose opacity at lower pressures and doesn't really feel like it flows well, plus the pressure never seems even and can bulge at times (That may just be me, but I can't really tell as of now). So should I consider looking for a better brush to use for this, or are there settings I can tick off to make things more comfortable?
    And if a certain brush is better, anyone have any recommendations?
    Thank you all, thank you each! And assuming you haven't finished the video yet, thank you for lending me your time.

    • @rae9765
      @rae9765 5 років тому +52

      set the pen pressure sensitivity lower for the bulging issue and for the density issue make sure the box where it says something like pen pressure affect density isnt clicked (this on CSP tho, idk about other programs)

    • @yeadude1000
      @yeadude1000 5 років тому +28

      Depending on what program you use, there should be a setting somewhere that can disable pen pressure when it comes to opacity on a certain brush.

    • @cedar7560
      @cedar7560 5 років тому +14

      If you don't mind other people's input, I would honestly say, test different pens/brushes just because you might end up finding another you like that works better for you. But as for losing opacity at lower pressures, check the settings of the pen. I know in CSP you can set opacity to get lighter when you apply less pressure, so make sure you have it turned off on the pen you're using. If you aren't using CSP, just double check the settings, it doesn't hurt, maybe you'll learn something new about the pen you've been using. (I recently learned that stabilization is why my lines are smoother on some pens than others.)
      Also, I wouldn't say a certain brush is better because different brushes work better for different people and they style they draw in. :D

    • @Feldi
      @Feldi 5 років тому +1

      The only issue I have with CSP is the system put in place to load files faster.
      Each file has a cache that stores data from layers even if you erase or delete them. Your average user wont have an issue with this feature but someone who animates will draw and delete a lot of layers and folders will balloon the file size to absurd extents.
      Thankfully, moving all the layers into a brand new project file is a workaround.
      But I'll still take CSP over the memory leaking photoshop any day.
      ( Plus CSP added a virtual camera feature recently, which un-ironically can be used to add tweens to your animations.
      Basically makes it like a combination of Flash and Photoshop for animation now. )

    • @FluffleOW
      @FluffleOW 5 років тому +8

      I prefer Photoshop because I don't draw line-heavy pictures, I paint landscapes and use large texture brushes - I think Photoshop is better for a more organic/form-dependent piece, and then this is better for lineart-style pieces. Both have great features but personally I'm more comfortable with the fluidity of PS

    • @user-ff2mu4fh4v
      @user-ff2mu4fh4v 5 років тому +5

      @@FluffleOW I think csp is especially better for that kind of work since the brush engine is much better than photoshop. Painting is more natural in csp than photoshop since it's been designed to do so, but in the end it's always a matter of which software you're more comfortable with.

      It depends on the person, how much time is used to learn the program, what your using the program for, what your computer's stats are, etc. There's so many variables that telling someone one program is better than the other feels wrong. Try out every digital drawing tool you can find and see what works best for your workflow. I personally use Ps just because it's everywhere, easier to troubleshoot, and the platform I learned digital illustration on. Csp is purpose built for digital illustration, Ps is a more versatile tool (Csp is really good at one thing, Ps is adequate at many different things).

    Hi LavenderTowne! Great video, I love how you always sound so chill...Is like watching hot chamomile, it's relaxing. XD
    A little advice regarding inking, do it on a vector layer. This is something that a LOT of people coming from photoshop missed out, but it's the main reason why inking in CSP is a joy and doesn't give you any trouble. The first thing is that you can use the vector eraser to erase until the intersection (this is a time saver). The second thing is that you can use an option to fill up until the mid point of a vector line, it doesn't matter if the line is jagged textured etc. It will always go to the midpoint.
    Another thing a lot of Photoshop users miss out is the reference layer. The reference layer is an option in which the magic wand or the bucket tool go pick from that reference layer and not the layer in which you're drawing.
    A little pro's tip regarding brushes. You can add multiple brush tips to a single brush and giving them a random order. It means that if you add 5 brush tips to your inking brush and you put that order on random... well every stroke will be different but consistent. Plus you can do this to vector lines... So when you create a frame box using the frame tool OR the polyline shape tool (this one on a vector layer) you can change the feeling of the lines using the object tool.
    English is not my first language... so I'm sorry if I sounded cocky or rude. XD

    I've been using Clip Studio for about a month now, and I had been using photoshop for about 15 years. When I first tried it out I had the free version, and I didn't like the "feel" of the program when it came to sketching and making lineart, but I bought it last month in order to force myself to learn how to use it because I want to start a comic. Anyway, I started to figure it out, and almost everything you said you didn't like is easily fixed. If you download some of the assets from the community hub or make your own brushes, or adjust the pen pressure. One of the major things I love about making the brushes is the ability to have more than one brush tip for input, which makes the comic panels and straight line tool look a lot more "hand drawn" with varying line weight. It takes a bit of fiddling, but if you make a few brush tips that are hand drawn lines you can use them to make a new panel brush and adjust the angle that they're put down (you can also use them as a general brush so you can make straight lines that look organic).
    One of the things I've found super useful is the sub-tool option window being open, where you can quickly adjust stabilization and anti-aliasing ( as well as using the pen options to just uncheck the box that makes that line flip at the end).

    2:00 You can use the figure ruler tool and get the effect you're looking for. It allows you to great the shape of the panel you want then draw the line segments w/ the density you want.

    I have been using SAI for over 3 years now, and I have been having issues using programs such as Photoshop, but this one, oh god! It was so easy to adapt to. Yes, it had its ups and downs for me, considering SAI is a really different program but it still did a great job.
    Even though, I am not leaving SAI anytime soon, it's fun to doodle in once in a while. I sometimes even add effects to my illustrations in it.
    I know that I am praising it a lot, but I had some problems in it at first. But, if you believe, like I did, you can do whatever you want.

    csp is my favorite program, especially for comics! it's a perfect balance between the overly simple sai and the heavy and not adapted for drawing ps. it also has animation settings and I haven't tried those yet but heard that animating here is really nice.
    also I'm always using vector layers for lineart and I highly reccomend trying those, especially with your cartoon style. they make your lineart smooth, clean and easy to edit.

    Not gunna lie, I was waiting for that coloring bit. I wanted to hear your reaction to the amazing paint bucket hahaha XD I've been using CSP for a few years now and really love it. I also agree with the shift lines though... But there's so many pens you can make and that people have made, and don't forget about the materials gallery! So so many things. Have fun and I hope you really love it! I want to upgrade to EX one day aaaa

      Honestly people need to stop resurrecting this dead horse from their torrent list, for 20 bucks you can get Paintstorm Studio, and the app is grossly superior to SAI. If you're really patient you could wait for a sale and pick up Clip for 20 or even 15 bucks. Both Storm and Clip are superior and costs less.

      @@frostreaper1607 There are some artists just like SAI more than Csp. Doesn't matter the reason, if there are people using it and like it who are we to tell them to 'stop resurrecting it'?

      KonKon Art The problem is most people that use Paint Tool Sai don’t even pay for it. If your using it legally you’d have paid around $50 for it and for that money you can get better programs. The only way it’s a better option for newer artists is if they pirate it and the developer gets nothing from that.

    • @konkonart7128
      @konkonart7128 5 років тому

      @@winnief3661 The pirate dilemma is basically that Adobe (used as an example as it's the largest example of this) knows that pirates are a thing and acknowledge that a non insignificant amount of people don't pay for their programs. Adobe makes their money off the companies that are required to pay for Adobe licenses, and the standard pirate is used to reinforce Adobe products as an industry standard. In ideal perfect conditions people would pay for the products and price assessment can come from that.
      The issue is that in real world scenarios pirating brings the price to 0 (and with a small bit of time to acquire and learn ho to use it), which instantly makes it more competitive for the normal joe user. It's why Adobe has an iron lock on the digital industry, pirates were their friend (until recently at least). It's also why smaller devs can't afford to use pirates like Adobe can, (relatively) smaller devs (Sai, CSP, etc.) need that revenue from the average joe, which ironically makes them less competitive when compares to other programs on strictly a pricing standpoint.

    This was a really useful video for me! I’ve been wanting to get into digital art for a long time and invest in a nice program, but I didn’t want to sell my soul to have Photoshop. Knowing that Clip Studio Paint is a viable option is heartening!! So thank you so much!!!

    Hey lavender!
    I use clip studio too, and it was really hard to get used to it in the beginning;
    but I still find that I keep discovering new useful features each time I draw, and I love it.
    Some hints regarding your lineart problems; Yeah, there are SO many ways to customise your
    brushes, I suggest you take a whole drawing session without having something to draw in mind,
    just to play around with those settings. It takes a while to get into it, but trust me, once
    you got it all set up your process is sped up immensely.
    Another feature you NEED to get into cuz it is just so helpful is vector layers.
    Ekkoberry made a tutorial on them you might find helpful:
    ua-cam.com/video/MQVB_KOdDrE/v-deo.html
    Basically, instead of putting pixels down onto your page looking like a line, the program does the math
    and saves all points of the line. That makes you able to smooth them, bend them, change them,
    straighten them, change their thickness and do everything even after the lines are down.
    Even erasing and cleaning up gets so much easier.
    Furthermore, since you are working on a webcomic, there are settings where clip studio just
    manages ALL of your pages, have an overwiev, can see previous pages etc.
    Really really go into it! I believe it might speed up your drawing process a lot. Enjoy!

      w/ line breaks after some commas or semicolons to give a slightly bigger comma pause for some commas,
      but still pausing less than a period :)
